There is no restriction on 3PO that you only have to take him if you take R2.
It least for me it seams obvious that 3PO is an option but when to want to take him, you can only buy him as an "upgrade" for R2.
Also what i didn't see mentioned here before is the fact, that R2 can repair himself! That means that R2 has effectively 8HP +2 if you take 3PO. Sure the only thing he does is slowly walking into the enemy deployment zone. But can actually be quite tricky to prevent him from doing just that when you cannot shoot at them more than once per round (and I'm looking at you Disarray!). The zero pip card gives the droids a well needed speed boost while also getting out of close combat and having the much desired suppression token, nice. I see a lot of strategies already here. The obvious cabrio for example or Scout 2 with Rex. I think this Unit will be loads of fun!
Some important issues raised here...especially that the R2 Threepio combo will be FUN !

When C3-P0 releases, I will have it kick a tauntaun rider....unfortunately Threepio will not be able to distract as not a trooper. Forcing a tauntaun to attack would have been a useful counter.

Retaliation for clumsy kick in the form of 3 white attack dice...fair enough.

A pity...also a pity the writer or typist ignored the correct spelling. The article currently reads “agressive foes”. Needs an “errata” to correct spelling ‘aGgressive’.

Legion's first year or so was as well handled as they probably could do. Every month save one saw a release of a unit or battlefield expansion. It may have been a frustrating release schedule to build lists around, but it was sustainable (or so it appeared) and kept the meta shifting. Even when strike teams took over, there was always a few weeks of shuffling around each new unit to figure out if it would make a big impact or not. I know people that lost interest during the initial build up as well, but I think FFG did about as good of a job as they possibly could, and a much better job than games like Armada.
Since the one year mark, however, things have gone from OK to really terrible. Besides the very limited selection of units this summer (I didn't buy any for my main army from the Occupier until Shoretroopers, and I'm STILL waiting on Shores) and May being the first month without a release since June of last year, we've had the Dewbackle, and the horrible release schedule that has been announced for the CW factions come up since. When the CW factions were announced, FFG stated that they would pursue an aggressive release schedule with the, and the "80% figure" was tossed around. Since then we've got.... not a lot. Everything added together barely comes over the 50% mark, and most of that won't see the light of day until next year. Assuming we get the core set this month (which is a big assumption), that leaves a 6 month gap to get what the GCW units had within two months. And meanwhile, the GCW units are still getting more releases (Luke and Vader operatives, more heavy weapon options, more terrain pieces, and possibly two new commander/counterpart units.) Even with R2 and 3P0 (which I'm not sure what their point will even be), the CW factions don't have a lot of options, and they won't be getting any more anytime soon. This will create a stale meta and list building experience for CW players, and that's not even factoring in the problems competitive players will face.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I've already put away my Imperials. Everything I don't need to play Republic has gone into a battle foam box and will remain there until needed for loaner games, or until I'm certain FFG has screwed the pooch. Yes, it's very much a self-imposed limitation, but I wanted to play the Republic as soon as I heard of this game, and by golly, I'm taking the opportunity now that I can. That means, between now and AdeptiCon, I've got to make a Republic list work for me. While that's not in and of itself all that difficult, it is somewhat difficult to adapt to various things I've encountered in the current meta, and create a more flexible army. That problem will likely continue to magnify, as GCW players will in turn adapt to facing the CW factions, and be in a much better position to counter the limited options CW factions will have. The slow release of things that should have been out upon release or within a few months thereafter means that even if the Saber tank, Rex, or Phase II clones are the biggest of big deals, there will be limited time to practice with them before AdeptiCon, and as of the current schedule, no major events between their release and Worlds. (I assume that'll change, but that's just how it stands now) Its certainly doable, as the Republic has a solid foundation, but it'll be difficult due to the lack of variety and flexibility.
You should not be so harsh on yourself or FFG...if your opinion is worth so little, why would anyone care?
I have 3 units of Wookie warriors and look forward to a few games against the new factions when they release...have already gotten over the pace and variety of releases for Star Wars: Legion by FFG. I am glad I stopped caring about the current meta or hotness years and years ago.

Game 1, opponent concede at end of turn 3, game 2 opponent concedes at end of turn 4. I have 3 minimum Rebel Trooper units that calmly walked up to and secured objectives while my opponents drowned in a pile of nonsense. *shrugs* seems legit.
EDIT: Weirdly, both opponents had similar feedback on the usefulness of various imperial units in combating the list. The E-Web and shoretroopers performed well (surge to crit and critical on the Shores were useful against both the T-47 and Tauntauns and the Sentinel overwatch from the E-Web was useful), but DLTs were mostly useless (dice pool was too weak, the extra range 4 did nothing as they ended up fighting at point blank range right away and the impact was too inefficient against T-47s) with one particularly interested in T-21s for the Critical 2.
Aaargh...early concessions 😆 ...you must have being doing something right! A little off topic, but do you have thoughts about possibly increasing sentinel of the 1.4 cannon by 1 to account for increased range effectiveness?

It is not designed to be. SW fans can be attracted by the intellectual property rather than the false idea that Warhammer WAS/IS the only miniatures wargame prior to it’s existence. I have seen many 40k fans stumble in allegiance but personally, as a Star Wars aficionado, there was never a real choice 😀

Own everything, been a Descent supporter as well (got everything of that line as well).
Now they are telling me they are killing both lines to try to compete with GW on their field. Thing is, me and my group won't leave Warhammer/40K to try this Legion thing. We liked IA/Descent because they were story driven dungeon crawlers, somewhat different than the other products on the market. We still feel Legion as a reskinned wannabe Warhammer game, and we won't spend a dime in it cause we don't feel attracted by something we already play and give us enough satisfaction.
I think that since Petersen left FFG things are going downhill. Best luck to them, it was a pleasure in the past years to be their customer but now I am out (and my group as well). Btw, since the 2nd edition, also XWing disappeared from the tables of the local gamestores here...
Played IA since the start...been with the ups and downs and questionable content - together we have 90% of product (some just were not interesting enough - think later figures around children’s rebels television show for example). Our group planned to play and began to put resources into Star Wars: Legion when it was available. We played IA campaign/skirmish and saw the future. The application required for most recent Lord of the Rings game (which we will not purchase) being reliant on digital content, was built on the FFG experience with upgrading IA. Not fans of the GW method and some of the type of fans it attracts, SW Legion has enough difference and it would be sad to miss out confusing the two as the same. Since you already play 40k etc. then you may as well stay there...we use IA material AND SW Legion with no qualms but no longer have time and $$$ for GW product.
Continue to enjoy what you have...life is too short to be bitter about the end of IA as a physically supported and expanded game.

Corroboration is the key...the transcript of a portion of the (now planned) bi-annual Q&A provided in article format specifically reflects the future Andrew N has for the future of IA. There is a future, and it is obviously digital content not physical - even the intro video to FFG before live streams shows IA components as background to digital games label.
Just because you do not see the words, does not make the future difficult to predict...often it is what is NOT said with FFG that is the clue...
The article is confirmation of all that has gone before regarding the direction of FFG IA. IA is not dead like Runewars for example.

The most recent article in the news section almost 100% confirms Star Wars Imperial Assault will continue DIGITALLY under the digital games segment of research, design, production and marketing.

Thanks for that article...first I had seen of your blog. Some nice ideas and thoughts. Not trying to be funny, but I enjoy the odd typo like emplacements vs empal cements as the 1.4 impaled on cement needed extra range (frustrating when an AT-ST spends all but the last turn out of range) and the moving the Exweb felt like walking through wet cement. I look forward to reading more 🙂

If I need to give an opponent an advantage, my list will be 6-7 activations at most with an opponent 10-11. Generally I settle on 9-10. These are non competition games BTW.

11 minutes ago, DwainDibbly said:I think people are really taking FFGs statement of annual point changes and running totally in the wrong direction with it as far as "temporary" goes.
The fact points _could_ change again in a years time does not make the current points temporary. Since there is no requirement for FFG to change any of the points at all. They are just setting expectations so that people know IF the current round of point changes doesn't balance all the units sufficiently or IF it causes new problems, then they are prepared to do another batch (hopefully smaller) of point changes.
They're also saying that their aim is to do that no more than annually to reduce the issues point changes cause for a community.
What they are not saying is that the current set of point changes are temporary and if no problems are found over the next year, well darn it we're just going to change all the points anyway because this batch was just temporary.
Semantics aside, hopefully most people understand what FFG mean and what they are trying to achieve.
You are correct in that they want to see a variety of units been played however the reason for _why_ we don't already see that is because the game is not quite balanced enough for some units and by fixing that balance they will achieve their goal of a wider variety of units.
If FFG identify that too many players have bought and are playing snipers then there are two possible scenarios at play for fixing that with a point change. In what I'd like to think is the scenario most people on here will attribute to FFG:
The game is unbalanced, some units are not getting played competitively due to that, you make point tweaks to make those units a little more competitive and if you do a good job, you achieve a wider variety of units being played.
Here's the other scenario that assumes the game is already balanced as you seem to believe and that the points changes are not here to balance the game but only to change variety. In that case FFG have decided to deliberately unbalance the game in order to favour another set of units. The result will be players now go out and buy a whole new set of units to play in competition as the game is unbalanced and favours those units. That does not improve variety, it just changes which small set of units people are playing and in a years time, the evil FFG will once more have to change points to favour another set of units as the game will be stagnant with the same lists being played. Everyone will have to go out and buy those instead. Why? Because the unbalanced game will strongly favour a small set of units being played and FFG want people to play something else, lets pick a new unit to unbalance and make the go-to selection for competitive play. It'll help with sales too!
One of those seems rather scummy to me and a great way to kill off a community and a game. The other seems like the kind of thing a company wanting to produce a fair game with a lot of units people can enjoy playing without been at a disadvantage would do. Which do you think it is?
You have raised some thought provoking ideas. I do not believe FFG would be deliberately malicious...although remembering years such as 2020, Year of the Dewback sounds pretty amusing. I wonder if 2019 will be remembered as year of the sniper or the year the force balanced.

Sounds like it is time for...A CODEX !
When all the rules and point costs settle, I would buy a leather bound tome listing all the point costs, unit statistics, artwork...even fluff...
At some point I would be happy to play against those who have a correctly costed army without all their cards present on the table as long as unit bookkeeping methods were obvious without the cards...as long as I had access to their army list.

I also don't care about GW games or enjoy constantly hearing "well, in XXX game we could do this, Legion should do the same." That said, there's no reason to be as coarse, rude, and insulting as you are here. I can't say I've ever reported a post on here before, but I have now.
Well you can let me know how that works out. If you have the time, read the vituperative responses from all before casting more stones. Do you report others for bombarding so many threads with their GW garbage? No. Do you report yourself for “hate” of the sequels? Of course not.
I was called a POS and have the right to respond. Will you report that personal attack on me on my behalf? No? Well thanks for nothing...
I respect your right for expression of opinion however I have been attacked by some members of a bullying, petty, cowardly cabal who have banded together to attack a grandmother of all people.
