Torkil Mux vs Heightened Perception?
meffo replied to ToiletPaper Fiend's topic in X-Wing Rules Questions
agreed, but there is another important distinction in this interaction. the replacement effect and the effect being replaced are not very different at all. they accomplish the same thing, just at a different timing. you're still engaging. it's like throwing a trajectory simulator on top (yes, i know, the tie bomber doesn't have a sysyems slot). after skilled bombardier and nimble bomber, you're still dropping a bomb, so you can still elect to launch it instead. -
Torkil Mux vs Heightened Perception?
meffo replied to ToiletPaper Fiend's topic in X-Wing Rules Questions
i don't quite understand that line of reasoning. first, one ability replaces the timing of engagement for the chosen ship, then another ability replaces the timing of engagement for the chosen ship. the effects are definitely mutually exclusive all along, since each ship can only engage once during each engagement phase. if both abilities are added to the queue and resolved from it, there is nothing saying the first players ability should take precedence, since the effect itself (engaging at a specified initiative value) hasn't taken place yet. replacing replacement effects is fine, you just cannot replace an effect that ´has already been replaced, since that effect has not occurred. i agree the wording is far from perfect. "instead of its standard initiative value this phase." and "instead of its normal initiative value this round" are not nice and clear, but i will maintain that they could both refer to each other, meaning "normal initiative value" and "standard initiative value" just means something along the lines of "the initiative that ship would otherwise use". other than that, it makes sense roark should win, since i7 comes first. that's not how i interpret it, though. -
Torkil Mux vs Heightened Perception?

both torkil and roark have abilities that resolve at the beginning of the engagement phase. they are not replacement effects, but they are abilities that cause replacement effects during the engagement phase. the phrasing in the card text is a bit vague, but clear enough. "normal initiative" and "standard initiative" should mean something along the lines of "the initiative that ship would otherwise engage at". since there can be only one replacement effect for the original effect, we should do what the ability queue has told us to do. which ever ability resolved last will be the one to take precedence. -

that's just straight up incorrect. -
Enemy ship at range 0 in firing arc or not
meffo replied to muzhyou's topic in X-Wing Rules Questions
i'm not sure i follow you. as long as an object is in the area formed between the lines created by extending the lines printed on a ship token to range 3, it's in arc. you're not in your own arc, but everything beyond you to range 3 is in your arc. -
seismic charges was a thing in first edition as well. the crazy thing about seismic torpedoes was that they were an action, not an attack. they were a very interesting upgrade to say the least. i'm with you, though. there are a lot of pretty weird stuff slowly being introduced that isn't meant for normal play (i'm looking at you, hyperspace rings). we might see something strange sneak into standard play sooner or later.

when you gain a jam token, you must break a lock or remove one of your green tokens (the choice is up to the player that causes the jam token to be gained). if you can't, the jam token stays until the end phase of the current round. so if you have a lock and gain a jam token, you will break that lock. you can then proceed to gain another lock or any number of green tokens. if you don't have a lock and gain a jam token, any lock you acquire or green token you gain later on will be removed along with the jam token, assuming it happens before the end phase of the current round. so in some situations, having a lock when you get jammed can protect you from breaking a valuable lock or removing one of your green tokens, assuming you're capable of acquiring that valuable lock or green token later on during the same round.

once per opportunity. tarkin only triggers once during the systems phase. it doesn't matter how many locks he has. he picks one and another friendly ship may acquire a lock on that locked object. please note it does not ignore range restrictions, so that other ship still needs to be at range 0-3 of the object being locked, as per usual with locks.

What counts as the "effect" of a bomb?
meffo replied to mightynute's topic in X-Wing Rules Questions
ok, not well enough described by me. i'll change it to "in range of the bomb effect". being in range of the obstacle is being in range of the bomb effect. at what range you are to the bomb token has no consequence with seismics. -
i would agree, if you should thank me said "zam wesell may recover a (charge). then, [...]", but since chewies action is completely optional per the card text, i don't think he holds up well as an example.

What counts as the "effect" of a bomb?
meffo replied to mightynute's topic in X-Wing Rules Questions
rules reference page 10. it doesn't matter if any damage is suffered, if any tokens are assigned or anything, if you're in range of the bomb effect when it detonates, you suffer it's effects. that's even if you have and use ablative plating as far as i can tell. the effects of bombs and mines are listed on page 23 and 24 of the rules reference, keeping in mind that sabine will only trigger off of bombs of course. -
yeah, wow. zam will certainly boggle a lot of minds and raise the threshold of entry into the game considerably. i dare say she's quite complicated. so she has two conditions. you may assign one of them to yourself during the system phase facedown. the conditions are revealed after you defend, but they stay assigned to you until the start of the next system phase. now that's out of the way! "after you defend" is during the aftermath of an attack that was performed with you as the defender ("you" always meaning the ship itself, Zam Wesell). please note that this can happen from snap shot, foresight, captain jostero or other sources of attacks that can occur outside of the engagement phase. if you get shot again after the condition card is revealed, it's still active, yes (it stays with you until the start of the systems phase). please note that you can only perform one bonus attack per round, but you can choose not to perform the bonus attack from "you'd better mean business" when it's revealed if you're expecting an attack from another ship that you'd rather perform your bonus attack versus later on. this is because the effect says "you may spend 2 [...]". some condition cards have abilities that resolve when they are assigned (i'll show you the dark side). in the case of zam, her two condition cards have several abilities with different timings ("after you defend", "at the end of the engagement phase", "at the start of the system phase"). the abilities will be resolved at those timings - and not when the condition cards are assigned.

oh, i've been to tourneys where a printed version of the list from the official app was required, but it's definitely not common practice. the official app is mentioned in the RR several times when you read about squad building, but not as a requirement. i've been to a number of bigger tourneys (three system opens, a couple of regionals and nationals back in x-wing 1.0) - and the tournament organizers will always enforce rules on how you can build your list and how you must present it. it will differ from tourney to tourney, though. lists will always be checked by the organizers when you register and submit your list. so the fact that the official app currently has a bug when trying to equip some upgrades to the nashtah pup is not an issue what so ever. it's a software issue and maybe even extending to a marketing issue, sure. but it's not a rules issue or something that could ever pose any problems in a tournament. if there was ever a tournament that didn't use squad lists, it could be a problem, but that seems extremely unlikely. what a weird tournament that would be. i doubt people would even be willing to participate if you didn't have to use a squad list.
-
the perform action step will happen as normal. you will be stressed from performing a red maneuver, though.
-
it doesn't matter that it's two different effects. there are a ton of abilities that can be split into a number of effects. i'm still leaning towards having to recover a charge to be able to acquire a lock. i really don't like the word "then" in ability text, though. it could go either way.
-
don't worry. just like @emeraldbeacon has already mentioned, it's not an issue. you cannot equip the pup with afterburners, since the ship cannot be saved to your squad that way. you need to be able to have a functioning squad in the official app to be able to attend a tourney with it. it's just a bug.
-
not clear. annoyingly, this card uses the word "then", which according to the good old intertial dampeners ruling indicates that it's two different effects. it's just a single ability, though. so i'm still going with @Hiemfire here. if you can't recover a charge, you don't get a lock.
-
agreed, you must use a template of a higher speed, if there is such a template. failing the action does not mean you're unable to use the template, since failing is just a way of resolving the action in a default way.

New App Bug or is this intentional?
meffo replied to KingmanHighborn's topic in X-Wing Rules Questions
the worst part about the new app is that it no longer works as a card database. the new search function is good, but the app doesn't show you the actual cards as images, which would let you include them in forum posts and such. i don't want to go back to the fandom wiki for doing that, since that doesn't work properly anymore either. -
don't get me wrong, i would love for this to work, but i don't think it does. leia does not trigger while you execute a maneuver, she triggers after a dial is revealed. her effect is then applied while the maneuver is being executed - and also for effects that trigger before and after the maneuver is being executed. "After a friendly ship reveals its dial, you may spend 1 (force). If you do, the chosen ship reduces the difficulty of that maneuver." vs "While you execute a maneuver, you may execute a maneuver of the same bearing and difficulty of a speed 1 higher or lower instead." that's why the clarification that leia and BB work together is not applicable to ved and pie. ved hasn't happened yet at all when pie triggers. also, the first paragraph of the entry in the FAQ on "abilities that alter the speed, difficulty, and/or bearing of a maneuver that a ship reveals during its Reveal Dial step and executes during its Execute Maneuver" actually only deals with difficulty, not with speed or bearing (speed being the critical case here).
