While the idea of an Essentials Kit would be very useful for 1.0 players and single-faction collectors alike, there is still a great purpose for the Core Set. I bought the original Core Set with the knowledge that although I couldn't go to tournaments straight away, I wouldn't go to tournaments straight away. Who would do that? All three Core Sets serve the basic function of a board game. You can't play 100/200-point games, for sure, but you can play games, at least. And then, of course, new players will rarely know what faction they want to collect before they start playing, so although the Core Set only includes 2 of the 7, it's a reasonable introduction. An Essentials Kit, on the other hand, would literally only be a bunch of stuff you get in the Core Set for much cheaper. So from a player's perspective, an Essentials Kit and a Core Set would both serve their own important uses, but from a marketing perspective, there's no actual need for an Essentials Kit. It's redundant and its only result is to have players spend less money, which is hardly want Fantasy Flight want.

I don't own the core set for Imperial Assault but I am interested in getting it. While it does appear to be practically overflowing with figures, it omits certain major characters like Han and IG-88, reducing them to mere tokens without their relevant figure packs, which is an issue for me. My understanding is that (in the campaign) you draw a card that directs players to a side mission in which the relevant side fights for the right to use one of these token characters in future missions. I intend to only purchase figures as they come up in this manner, thereby saving money, so I have two questions. Firstly, are there any token characters that are integral to the campaign and must be played at some point? Secondly, am I right in believing that all seven of the token character side missions are included in the core set, or is it necessary to purchase the actual figure to play them in the campaign? I just don't want to spend $24 on a General Weiss only to never use him.

Indeed. Furthermore, the upcoming Saw's Renegades and TIE Reaper expansions will contain components for both versions (the latter will not be available in any conversion kit). The First Order and the Resistance will be separate factions as well, and it will be necessary to purchase those extra conversion kits. They might be combined, though, as there are only three Resistance and six First Order ships overall. It's also possible that these will be deliberately cheaper, roughly equivalent to single-ship blisters. They could even (and this would be really great) include the components to fly ships from other factions like in Most Wanted: Resistance A-wings, First Order TIE Interceptors, etc.

Thank you all! I'm sure I will be able to bend the bars sufficiently to make it work. I'll only use the pre-gens for those two adventures as well as the online Mountaintop Rescue follow-up. After that, either my group will want their own characters or they'll get bored of the game - I doubt they'll want to continue for that long with such limitations. Thank you again!

Hello all. I have a gaming group of sorts with which I occasionally GM a sort of made-up RPG with a vague sense of something called rules. We'd all like to have a go at the real thing, though, with maps and different kinds of dice and pre-written adventures and actually fair combat. Fantasy Flight's Star Wars stuff has previously been impressive, and I was able to get the Beginner Game for Force and Destiny for quite cheap, so it seemed like a no-brainer (I don't have it yet; it's still on its way). I also can acquire the Game Master's Kit for next to nothing, too, and as it comes with a screen and another adventure I feel it would make a good companion to the Beginner Game. There is one slight problem, though - the Core Rulebook is quite a bit pricier, much more than the two aforementioned products combined. I won't be getting it until I've run a few adventures and am certain that I will get good use out of it with my group. My titular question is not looking for advice for a first-time GM. That's what Google is for. My question is this:
Is it possible to run the adventure found in the Game Master's Kit with the rulebook in the Beginner Game?

Ugh, I always bump ships to oblivion. Especially when I play with swarms...
I was in an 80p three-way with Rey/Finn and Ahsoka/Rex versus a Scum list and an Empire list with Kylo (this was 1e). I gunned down a few ships fairly quickly, including Kylo, leaving the Empire crippled. However, the two teams ganged up on me and I was the first out (never playing 3-way again). Scum easily beat Empire thanks to their lack of their best ship. As we were packing up, I realised one of Kylo's key upgrades, one that gave him a free evade in most cases, hadn't been mentioned all game. That could have turned the tide of the entire match, but it was a Dirty Poor Casual(TM) game, so no biggie.
