I'm probably not going to look for another community to join. I've tried discord with a lot of displeasure. Although I do enjoy most of there custom content, even though some of it was over the top and I never used them. And because of my frustration with discord, I really don't want to try other ones. I've been on reddit and didn't like how it was formated, and I've heard a lot of bad things about facebook. Plus I don't have facebook 😅.
But I think the biggest factor is how small and personal this community is. I always appreciate maniakmedic's and BCumming's posts. I don't think I'll ever find a community like this, so I'm not going to try. I'll probably try all the other communities, but if it doesn't click, I'm out. I'm not going to put a lot of effort or try to push through or whatever.
I guess I'm saying goodbye. This has been an awesome experience with all you amazing people. I've enjoyed all of these topics(even the ones about statistics 😂). You guys are unreplaceable. Have fun playing Marvel Champions.

Ascarel got a reaction from redcapjack in What's up with dueling?
In the same spirit as this other thread I made a while ago, I thought I'd go on with another discussion of theme and game design interaction in the context of L5R. Some disclaimer:
I still love L5R as much as before, perhaps more so. I am going to write about something I don't like to the point of being borderline NPE. This is still not a rant. See #1. I've come to believe that the design of duels in L5R has missed its mark and fails to live up to its thematic underpinnings -- resoundingly so.
By default, when initiating a duel, a player chooses both characters involved in the duel. In practice, this makes the vast majority of duels what's been called "bully duels". Players will set up their duels to be won easily, if not with certainty. Many cards actually encourage this, especially that combo of Iaijutsu Master/Mirumoto Daisho that I've seen too often on Jigoku for my taste, but both cards individually carry the same spirit. And actually nobody needs to go that far, because the mere fact of choosing a weaker opponent is what irks me and make me roll my eyes. And because this is a choice players will often make and often actively work toward, most duels 1) bring no tension to the game as a result, 2) have a completely skewed risk/reward ratio for the initiator.
Sure, in so doing the players follow the rules, but to my mind, such duels are completely.... dishonorable.
Yep, I really went there. 😉
Bully duels are inherently dishonorable, plain and simple.
Competitive players are all Scorpions at heart, I guess. 😉
In terms of game design vs theme, there is a conundrum here. I was told that in the old lore, a character like Toshimoko never lost a duel. I have no problem with that, but that's one character alone, not a whole game mechanic going in a dubious direction.
I would also counter with the following. There is very little glory in being the best duelist against weaker opponents. In being the best, Toshimoko should win duels against a buffed up Kisada with little sweat -- but that is not what the game is allowing at all.
To follow the theme more closely, I would have enjoyed being granted a choice like that given by Arbiter of Authority but at all times -- I don't want to duel you, but I will dishonor my character for refusing. Or maybe there should have been some additional cost added to initiate an easy duel. Or maybe a character not meant for dueling should not be challenged at all? Just let _duelists_ do their thing amongst themselves? Just thinking out loud here. Anyway, I feel that so much more could have been done around that mechanic in relation to the theme. The more I think of it, the more being a good duelist should mean that yes, you should win more easily against strong characters -- but not necessarily against everyone. It feels wrong. It's a loophole. And as long as it is there, I guess Scoprions people will exploit it.
Alright, so that was it. Discuss!

I think I'm the only crazy person who is admitting to collecting all the mats. 😆 I just really love this game, so I don't mind splurging on them. I haven't done the same for LotR LCG or AH, both games I also really like.
It would be nice if they released some more generic Marvel mats (like the ones that came with the launch promo kits).

As a predominantly solo player (thank you COVID) I personally have found most of FFGs takes on the Marvel Heroes and Villains spot on. Thor and Hulk are the two disappointments. Thor's Lightning Strike can be so much better handled by Caps Shield toss its almost criminal. Hulk can deal 13- 15 damage in one punch, 23-25 if you get really really lucky (I've never achieved it but its possible) with your cards BUT with a bit of planning and patience Captain Marvel can deal a whopping 27/8 damage in one turn (and I've done this about 10 times now in play both solo and as part of a team). Now I'm taking nothing from CM - she is now one of the top heavy hitters in the Marvel Universe (depending on the writer) but Thor and Hulk are the ones the villains are always worried about and that just doesn't come across in the game. Yes Thor, with thought, planning and Asgard can be made to work but he's still just mid-tier. I'd always prefer the two Captains in a team before thinking of Thor. That's ridiculous as in the comics you always want Thor.  Also Thor cannot do any where near the damage CM can dish out in a turn which also is wrong. However Thor can work once you know how to play him.

Hulk on the other hand just feels a bit of a let down. He only gets to do his big hit twice per deck and can be screwed by tough, stunned or exhaustion. Again using Captain Marvel as an example she has an Energy Channel ready to go that she has been building up over time from excess energy she wasn't able to use (such a good ability), a photonic blast in hand plus at least one energy but she is stunned. No problem, she uses her basic attack then deals 10+5 damage and draws a card. Hulk on the other hand has Hulk smash and three physical  in his hand of 4 but because he is stunned he can't use it because he only has one basic attack. The same is true of if the villain was tough or he's exhausted. His Hulk Smash is wasted and he is forced to switch to Banner in the hopes he can do it next turn. Captain Marvel or other Heroes don't have that problem. Frankly I wish Hulk had been given something similar to Energy Absorption with Gamma keyword being a factor. So far that Gamma keyword means nothing and doesn't help Hulk a bit. I agree with many that Banner should have a hand of six just like She-Hulk. Hulk Smash should also have had piercing ignoring tough and Hulk's stun affect could have been lessoned by discarding a card rather than having to attack and pretty much ending his turn.
In summary Thor can be learnt to work but he never really feels like the Thor from the comics or the movies. Thor struggles as a solo on Expert or above and even on standard he can be embarrassed. Thor is dependant to a certain extent on the rest of his team to handle threat especially if the villain has few minions in his deck.
Hulk is a real struggle on solo even on standard against villains that stun or exhaust Hulk or who have loads of minons like Ultron or schemes like Red Skull. Hulk in a team is dependent on the other players keeping the threat down. If you have a group, like mine, who prefer playing certain heroes and protection aspect only, this can be a real problem. I like playing Iron Man Justice but having a Thor or a Hulk in that mix tends to guarrantee the villain winning because unless I'm lucky Iron Man isn't getting into play for 2 to 3 turns and that might be too late to deal with the threat. I'm not going to force my team mates to choose other heroes and/or aspects but it does mean I have to change especially if we have someone who wants to play Thor or Hulk. I am sure I'm not alone here.  Hulk needs a team roster that is designed to cater for his specific strengths/weaknesses more than Thor.

I like a lot of the ideas they had for Hulk, I just think it really comes down to an issue where it’s a little hard to do anything.
I think you could keep the theme, but make him a bit better if you gave Hulk immune to stun and draw a card whenever he takes damage (to represent his growing rage) and swapped Banner’s ability for “You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry! - Discard a card to search your deck or discard pile for a copy of Limitless Strength and add it to your hand. Shuffle your deck”
That way you could keep the feeling of a desperate scientist getting by on his wits and an uncontrollable monster, but with the ability to have some more explosive turns...

Yes curse/blessed would count as symbols.  The card clearly delineates the options:  even and odd cover all of the numeric tokens and symbol covers everything else.  It's a nice way for them to future proof this card against new chaos tokens.
Aside: in this case they likely already knew about blessed/cursed (given that Jacqueline was being developed at same time as Innsmouth) so they could have enumerated all the symbols but it would take up a lot of space and left room for issues in case they added even more.

It's funny because in that case I think we both shall be eternally unsatisfied with Marvel Champions, but for opposite reasons. 😂 This doesn't imply we will ever dislike the game -- in any case I know I won't. But the game clearly tries to fit a newer kind of middle ground between deckbuilding and story-driven gaming, with simultaneously less of both. But aiming for wider audiences does force you to compromise. I think FFG is doing a fine job. The game is what it is. We can't fault them for our itches that needs more scratchin', so to speak.

I'm always fascinated by how differently people can approach games. This is the exact opposite of my take. I got bored with Champions after Black Widow was released (I've said it often enough in other threads, but replaying the same villains just doesn't cut it anymore for me) so I stepped into the larger world of Arkham LCG while waiting for the Red Skull box, and I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved) to see I had a lot less player cards to use -- new investigator decks notwithstanding. That being said, although I egoistically wish that Champions had been the same, I do know that the idea is absurd and unrealistic, because they are more heroes to play than villains to face, and that's what people likely want to see. It's fine, it's how it is. But today I know better what I want and where to expect it.

So many great things are coming our way here. I can barely concentrate on work. 😂
The team-up cards are great ideas to make co-op play more meaningful, and the way this can work solo (with the signature allies, if you don't play two-handed) is a nice touch, showing they still care.
I never cared much for Quicksilver because I don't really know who he is but his Hero ability is versatility on steroids that might put Captain America to shame. Buffing any of his basic stats make him as reliable as Cap for a cheaper cost, and with proportionally more potential in the future, i.e. whenever we get other cards that increase basic abilities. We already have that with Protection, in fact. I've always found Expert Defense difficult to play because there is already a cost of readying back after defending, and though Expert Defense is 0-costed, it's still one card less in your hand to start your turn against some damage you could mitigate in other ways (such as with Energy Barries). Now I think Quicksilver can eat Expert Defense for breakfast.
Yeah, the 3-sided, or "folding", identity cards, not something I saw coming either.
If you guys don't solo two-handed, I think this will change with Rocket and Groot. I mean, not even for the team-up cards between them. It's just... I mean, come on. You know you have to do it.
Rocket getting effects off excessive damage is both hilariously thematic and a nice new puzzle for the mathematically-inclined player who hates waste.
Warlock is an auto-include in my Spider-Man Protection Deck.

I have to continue shaking my head in disbelief at Quicksilver. His hero ability is once per phase. When a Justice player gives him Heroic Intuition, it means Protection Quicksilver can thwart for 4 on his turn, defend freely in the villain phase and come back readied on his next turn. Or defend _twice_ in the villain phase and come back readied with a good ol' Indomitable. And for good measure, a third player on Leadership can Morale Boost him. This is just bunkers.

    I only two-hand, if solo!
So, there's no hero I'm more irritated with than Spider-Woman.  But only because of her deckbuilding.  I have prebuilt class decks that I pick up and play with whichever heroes I want.  They're left more generic, so they're not optimized, but they're perfect for pick-up-and-play in Standard difficulty.  I'm thinking I'll use the duplicates from other hero packs to create 4 class mixer options for Jessica Drew.  Won't know for sure until I have her, but that's how I'm leaning now.  Darn you, Matt Newman with your shake-it-up shenanigans!

He is pretty much an early day staple of the Avengers (far more so than Hulk).  He has 130 or so appearances in Avengers vol. 1
    He is your basic speedster.
He also marries Crystal from the Inhumans (which gives him some Fantastic Four ties).

Well, I might be a fool, because I quite disagree. Yes, he is probably the first hero you will choose after choosing your scenario, but that doesn't make him terrible, simply special. Yes, he is finicky, but he is great fun when he clicks -- when you play him right. Yes, he is less suited for solo gaming, but then don't play Aggression. Thor is what he is and if your baseline is Captain America, you are setting yourselves for eternal disappointment because no other heroes will play like Cap, who is the epitome of plug and play, so to speak, when you sit down and just be a badass without much thought. I for one don't want another hero like that. Different heroes allow for different styles of play. We're having an unfortunate dearth of scenarios right now, so this probably exacerbates Thor's idiosyncrasies, which will likely seem less suffocating with a bigger card pool in the future. But that does not make him unplayable right now.
