What is the future of Descent ...
Will FFG ever produce the missing 12 Heroes from D1e for D2e?
Will there be any further development for D2e (*** NOT *** for the app, but physical content)?
    Will there be a D3e?
EDIT: Why is the D2e Quest Vault and its various issues, bugs, etc. completely ignored?  It started as BETA about 5+ years ago, and continues in that state today.  There would be far more community development for the game if the software simply worked.  There is already an extensive bug report thread for the vault, so all it takes is someone at FFG to pay attention.  If you don't want to maintain it anymore, would you be willing to provide access to the code, so that the community could host it and maintain it?
  8. Thanks
Xyphistor reacted to any2cards in D2e Card Viewer - Image Update Project
D2e Card Viewer - a Chrome extension which operates on key websites to underline Descent 2nd Edition card names, which allows you to see images of the cards while you discuss them in forums, threads, etc.
For a long time now, I have been very dissatisfied with many of the card images that are displayed by the D2e Card Viewer.  This is due mostly to the fact that I did not have access to the original digital assets of the game, and relied on scanned images; even if those scans were high resolution (300 dpi, 600 dpi, even 1200 dpi), the images tended to looked washed out, blurry, etc.  This left the final product leaving much to be desired in my eyes.
If you compare the D2e images across most expansions to the excellent images that exist for Sadgit's Sands of the Past, or even of his re-done Lost Legends cards, the difference is incredible.  Further, after working very hard with Isaac Childres (aka Cephalofair - creator of Gloomhaven) and Marcel Cwertetschka (aka Morthai - creator of Forgotten Circles) to utilize the original digital assets of those games in the creation of the Gloomhaven Card Viewer, it further accentuated the enormous difference of quality of images.
Being the perfectionist I am, I couldn't stand it anymore.  Since I am 78 years old, I have a plethora of time on my hands.  At the urging of Sadgit (and his on-going patience, assistance, direction, etc.), this old dog is learning new tricks ... specifically, how to utilize Adobe's inDesign to create new card images.
So, I am officially announcing my intent ... my grand project if you will ... to re-create ALL of the card images for the game D2e, and thus for the card viewer.  I am starting with the Class skills cards and items.  I have completed the re-creation of the Apothecary class.  If you are using the viewer, you can see a sample of the new cards here:
    Bottled Courage

Obviously, this effort is going to take time ... but I feel that it is worth it, as I get to learn new software, new skills, and attempt to keep the mind sharp.  Now, as it is necessary to literally re-create all facets of each of the cards (XP, Fatigue, Text, Images, etc.), it is possible, even perhaps likely, that I make mistakes.  If you find such mistakes, I would appreciate it if you would point them out to me !
I will update the bottom of this post as I complete card sets.

If Refugees movement is 'up to 3 spaces' and the shortcut things add movement points then they my interpretation would be that they don't do anything for the refugees, since moving spaces is not the same as using movement points.

Hello Sadgit I hope this helps you:
The quest structure itself is linear (Quest 1 to Quest 6). No alternate layouts, no alternate quests depending on win/loss.
    Quest details:
    Quest 1 (no name given, I'd suggest "Embers of Dread"): 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 20, 28, 37, 39 Loss: 1 XP / Win: 1 XP
    Quest 2 ("Head of the Snake"): 4, 6, 19, 25, 35, 37, 40, 42, 43 Loss: 1 XP / Win: 1 XP
    Quest 3 ("Fire with Fire"): 4, 5, 7, 10, 12, 31, 32, 35, 43, S1 Loss: 1 XP / Win: 1 XP
    Quest 4 ("Catacombs of Dread"): 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 27, 28, 43 Loss: 2 XP / Win: 2 XP
    Quest 5 ("Unearthed Truths"): 2, 5, 9, 28, 31, 36, 37, 39 Loss: 2 XP / Win: 2 XP
    Quest 6 ("The Dragon Revealed"): 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 14, 19, 32, 34, 35, 43x2

I want to revive this thread to spit out some heroes I think will be greatly helped by the new hybrids.
Tomble Knight: High stamina to power Defend and he gets improved defense.
Jain Spiritspeaker: No Tempest, but Nature’s Bounty makes her much tougher than she already is.
Everything about Pathfinder Durik is in line with a scout, and his ability is valuable to reach search tokens and return to the party. I am unsure if his move actions can be “extended” with fatigue (since his ability only works during move actions) but if it can, the Wildlander’s Fleet Of Foot would be icing on the cake.
Roganna has always been an awesome hero, but she could make a nice Conjurer. She can pick and choose targets with a lot of freedom, and her feat can provide a degree of protection for nearby images.
Orkell can be a free roaming scout. A free KO would make me less worried about leaving the party for some shinies. If I don’t want the full health, then I can clear the way back to my friends after standing up.
Tinashi would make a good warrior or mage. Skills like Whirlwind, Molten Fury, Corpse Blast, Blasting Rune all are great with her ability. It makes many attack skills (like Motivating Charge) more economical too.
Mordrog as a Runemaster: really just one skill... Iron Will is basically a defense die upgrade.
Sir Valadir will make the Hexer’s very rough early game much more consistent. No Plague Cloud, but a Hexer with Internal Rot, Viral Hex, and reliable surges is still scary.
(Oops. The above two have been possible for years).
    There are dozens more!
Edit: One more I’m itching to mention- Jonas The Kind as a Conjurer. Images never attack, so they always get bonus defense. (If they’re nearby... which isn’t always the case with the Conjurer)

The rule book states that "the attacking player adds up all of the [Heart] results on the dice to determine how much damage is dealt by this attack." Thus, in step 2, an attack result is created that consists of the number of surges and the number of hearts rolled. This attack result can be further modified in subsequent steps of the attack (e.g. in step 4, Spend surges). Finally, in step 5, the damage component (hearts) of the attack result is used to calculate the damage dealt to the affected figure(s).
Sorry, but this is not a matter of "point of view" in the sense of equally valid positions. The answers that you received in this thread are backed up by quotes from FFG representatives, official rules and FAQ. You can of course use different house rules in your group, however be prepared that you will likely run into a lot of problems.
I assume that your "aura" refers to Andira Runehand's Hero ability. The answer is "usually Andira's Hero ability does not trigger if she is defeated". There are 2 conflicting effects here that trigger off the same condition if Andira suffers damage equal to her Health: "when a hero suffers damage". These effects are:
    1) When a hero suffers damage equal to its Health, it is immediately defeated.
    2) Each time a hero within 3 spaces of you suffers 1 or more [Heart] from an attack, the figure that performed the attack suffers 1 [Heart].
The Golden Rule states that these kinds of timing conflicts are resolved by the active player. When a monster attacks Andira, the active player is most likely the overlord and he will usually choose to resolve 1) first. When being defeated Andira is removed from the map and her Hero abiliy cannot trigger anymore.
The current rule-set of Descent is fairly complex and scattered over many rule books, FAQ documents and websites. That's why I created the CRRG in the first place some time ago. It includes only rules and clarifications from  the official rule books, official FAQ and quotes from FFG employees (unofficial FAQ), and represents the most comprehensive document of this type around at the moment. It does not include any rule interpretations, house rules etc.
I cannot exclude that it still contains errors. However, most of those have been weeded out after 13 versions. You can get it from here:
    https://descent-community.org/index.php/crrg/
I advise you to refer to the CRRG first, if you have any further rule questions.

Xyphistor reacted to Sadgit in Question on Andira Runehand's ability
There are several answers by FFG representatives that clearly refer to dealing damage and suffering damage as two separate individual substeps of the deal damage step (step 5) of an attack. Here are two examples with corresponding sources:
    Q. If Jain Fairwood converts all damage suffered to fatigue, do game effects triggered by damage still apply? The original question involved spending a surge to apply the Poison condition, but there are other effects as well. It was argued that because damage is step 5 of combat, the surge in step 4 would still be able to poison Jain because (potential) damage was rolled.
A: Yes, Jain Fairwood would still be affected by game effects that trigger off of dealing damage. For example, a surge ability that gives poison would apply to a target as long as the attack dealt 1 damage, regardless of how much damage the target actually suffers.
    Source: https://boardgamegeek.com/article/11004401#11004401

Q: When "Doom" is applied during an attack, does the effect of that condition trigger during that same attack?
A: Yes, because there is distinction between the timing of damage dealt and damage suffered. After applying shields, any remaining damage is dealt to the hero. At this point, conditions are applied. Any damage dealt is then suffered by the hero. Therefore, Doom does have an affect during the attack in which it is applied.

There are many abilities that cause figures suffer damage outside of an attack. Clearly, affected figures cannot roll defense die against this kind of damage and it is usually immediately applied. Although Andira's ability happens to trigger before the attack is resolved, it is still separate from the damage suffered from the attack results (hearts rolled in step 2 + additional hearts added e.g. by surge abilities, Hero abilities, etc.).
This is clearer if you consider an attack that affects multiple figures:
Step 2: Shadow Dragon (SD) rolls attack pool, target rolls defense pool
Step 3: Check range, result: sufficient range rolled
Step 4: SD applies Fire Breath using a surge, additional figures affected roll their defense pools
Step 5: In attacks affecting multiple figures the active player decides on the order in which damage is dealt and suffered:
    Affected figure #1
5a) Deal damage = Hearts (attack results) - Shields (defense results)
5b) Suffer damage = damage dealt modified by certain abilities and effects (Jain's Hero ability, Doomed, etc.)
5c) Andira's Hero ability triggers if at least 1 damage was suffered in 5b. EDIT: Other effects that trigger when damage is suffered are resolved simultaneously.
Repeat steps 5a - 5c for all figures affected by the attack. If the SD is defeated before damage is dealt to all affected figures, the attack is immediately resolved and no damage is dealt to or suffered by the remaining figures.
Another example is the Wither ability of Changelings and Lord Merrick Farrow:
Ability text: Surge: The target suffers 1 fatigue.
Let's say the target of the attack has fatigue tokens equal to its Stamina.
Step 2: Changeling rolls attack pool, target rolls defense pool
Step 3: Check range, result: sufficient range rolled
Step 4: Changeling applies Wither using a surge. The target immediately suffers 1 fatigue converted to 1 damage.
Although this damage is suffered as part of the attack, the defense result is irrelevant as the damage is not added to the attack result. Andira's Hero ability does not trigger in this step. An uFAQs has clarified that it only triggers on damage suffered in step 5b of an attack.
    Step 5: Resolve steps 5a-5c.
Last example is the Knockback ability of Trolls, Splig, and Ynfernael Hulks:
Ability text: Surge: Remove the target from the map, then place him on any empty space within 3 spaces of his original space. He counts as entering that space.
Let's say the target of the attack is moved into lava.
Step 2: Troll rolls attack pool, target rolls defense pool
Step 3: Check range, result: sufficient range rolled
Step 4: Troll applies Knockback using a surge. The target is tossed into lava and immediately suffers 1 damage.
Although this damage is suffered during the attack, I think it is very obvious that the defense result is irrelevant here. The lava damage is not added to the attack result and immediately suffered as an interrupt, instead. Andira's Hero ability does not trigger.
Step 5: Even if the target is no longer in range of the Troll, damage is still dealt as range was already checked in step 3. Resolve steps 5a-5c.
  14. Thanks
Xyphistor reacted to Sadgit in Question on Andira Runehand's ability
Reflective Ward is indeed the card with the worst wording in the game. FAQ and uFAQ have clarified that it works like this:
    1. Play Reflective Ward in step 2 before dice are rolled
    2. The hero as the option to cancel Reflective Ward by suffering 2 fatigue. As usual he cannot voluntarily suffer fatigue exceeding his Stamina.
    3. If Reflective Ward was not canceled, resolve steps of the attack as usual until the "Deal Damage" substep is resolved (no damage is suffered yet).
    Reflective Ward interrupt starts
    4. The hero adds up all hearts of his attack results after step 4 (Spend surges). The defense result of the monster(s) is irrelevant.
    5. The hero rolls his defense pool, canceling 1 heart for each shield result. He may use items and abilities that increase his defense result (shields etc.)
    6. The hero suffers the rest of the hearts. No other effects from the attack, such as conditions, will apply to the hero.
    Reflective Ward interrupt ends
    7. If the hero was defeated, the attack is resolved and monsters do not suffer any damage.
    8. Otherwise, resolve substep "Suffer Damage" as usual.

The FAQ on Reflective Ward clearly states that the interrupt includes a step in which the hero has to roll his defense pool. This is not true for Andira's Hero ability, Wither, Knockback and any other additional effect that causes the target to suffer damage during an attack. Although, one could assume that fluff-wise the abilities might work similarly, mechanistically they are very different. The original rulebook was printed 2012 before any of these effects had been introduced. Unfortunately, it was not updated in the last revision 2015.
I hope that my posts help to clarify the questions on this.

It isn't explicitly stated in the rulebook, but the fact that Deal and Suffer are both used as keywords implies that they are not interchangeable.
The distinction is most clearly necessitated by Jain Fairwood's hero ability... Which is why step 5 in the Steps of Combat section in the CRRG (p6) does explicitly define it.
The problem with trying to find a reference in the official rulebook for all of your rules needs is that a) it's completely out of date and b) there are a lot of conflicting/unclear 'rules'/card texts around. That's why the CRRG is more than four times the length of the official rulebook...

There is a difference between dealing damage and suffering damage, which makes both Andira Runehand's hero ability and Spiritspeaker's Shared Pain different to Reflective Ward. Therefore the FFG FAQ answer about Reflective ward would not be applicable to either of these other two cases.
No idea what Fire Breath has to do with any of this...
The "creator's" rules and FAQ frequently contradict themselves, partly due to the fact that there were multiple people answering questions clearly without talking to each other... Back when anybody bothered to answer any questions...
People like @Sadgit and @Zaltyre could probably point you at specific examples of these contradictions, they've been looking at this stuff a lot longer than I have.
If you want something to treat as gospel, make it the CRRG. That's a live document with actual informed interpretations of rules, backed up where possible by FFG answers, which gives you a logical and sensible way to interpret the rules/texts which are unclear. While it includes things like the FAQ answer on Reflective Ward, that's included as an exception rather than a rule since it doesn't fit with many other rules/explanations/common sense...

    1) Let your hero players help 😛   There's no need for the Overlord to deal with everything... The hero players should be allowed to read the campaign book anyway, there's nothing secret in it.
I would certainly delegate the map tile storage stuff to someone else (put away the old ones and get out the new ones)... This is a useful resource for sorting tiles without needing the campaign book: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/150367/game-tiles-quest
    2) Do some preparation in advance... As the Overlord, read the relevant quests in the campaign book before your group gets together, and give some thought to monster selection and any choices that you have to make...
That way you spend your xp and build your deck while the heroes are spending their xp and going shopping, then you can all build the map together (let the heroes do most of it) while you finalise monster choices etc...
There will inevitably be a bit of waiting around for the heroes, because you have so much more stuff to think about than they do, but you should be able to keep it to a minimum...

You can certainly use both surge abilities on the same attack. You then have two lots of 'choose an empty space within two spaces and place your figure in it' which are triggered at the same time. Since the rule is that if two things trigger at the same time the active player chooses the order in which they are resolved, I don't see any reason why you could not choose to activate them sequentially to teleport two spaces, place figure, teleport another two spaces.
There does need to be somewhere to place your figure after the first two spaces though - this doesn't become a single 'teleport four spaces'.

I think that both abilities can be used in a single attack. You have to use 2 free surges, of course. The Thorn player first decides to use a surge to teleport 2 spaces and then decides to teleport another 2 spaces. As you pointed out, 2 identical surge abilities may be triggered  without any problem. Otherwise the Berserker's Chipped Axe wounldn't make much sense.

There does need to be somewhere to place your figure after the first two spaces though - this doesn't become a single 'teleport four spaces'.

No, if the challenge token reveals a monster then you will not get a search card for it. The only way to get a search card is to reveal and then pass an attribute test.

Xyphistor got a reaction from Alarin in Large monster movement clarification
All correct. A large monster expands when its movement is interrupted, and performing an attack counts as interrupting the movement.
Yes, that's how large monster movement is designed to work, it's compensated by them typically having relatively low speeds.
