"Junzo, I will need your help to keep Kachiko's faction in line. And tell your granddaughter to return with Prince Daisetsu at once. I don't care how you do it, but do it."

"As you wish, my lord." *starts rooting through library for that interesting black scroll he saw the other day; that might help*

I'm actually sympathetic to Kachiko. If you remove the edict from the scenario, then her actions made a lot of sense: it would have massively destabilized the Empire to know that the Crown Prince, now Emperor presumptive, committed both patricide and regicide. Covering up the murder so that it appears 38 died of natural causes was the right move; this is not a society that would reward telling the truth in that situation. And since without the edict there's no grounds for bypassing Sotorii in the succession, you either ~take steps~ to make sure he doesn't wind up on the throne . . . or you make sure you have leverage over the homicidal teenager (who, let's not forget, could order your death if you don't make him feel grateful to you for your help, because he knows you know what he did).
Up until the edict appears, Kachiko made all the right decisions. The problem is that those decisions committed her irrevocably to a course of action that runs directly counter to the edict, and she didn't know that until it was too late. (Plus, it would still massively destabilize the Empire to know a Hantei son killed the Emperor, even if that son doesn't then become Emperor herself.) But now she isn't protecting the next Emperor; she's protecting a disinherited murderer. At that point there aren't any good choices: letting the edict go ahead risks exposing the truth, because the odds that Sotorii will go along with it quietly are about nil. Not to mention that an edict putting the Scorpion in charge of the younger, manipulable son right after the Emperor ~conveniently~ keels over of natural causes/gets stabbinated makes them look really, really bad. And, as Kachiko says in this story, the Empire is in a bad state right now: lifetime leverage over an Emperor you know you can manipulate is probably more effective than a year or two of regency for an Emperor who's either a lesser known quantity or disenchanted with the whole society, depending on how familiar Kachiko is with Daisetsu's attitude. But to make that work, you've got to remove Toturi from the equation, so . . .
I mean, no, her decisions are not having good effects, nor are they remotely honorable. But her reasoning is sound, and as much about preserving the Empire as it is about helping the Scorpion get ahead. And honestly, the whole thing would have played out very differently if Shoju had just shared that information with her. It was going to be public soon anyway, and it would have delighted her -- more power for the Scorpion, yay! -- so while I understand him holding it back, this is the cluster**** that results.
Which is why I'm really enjoying this setup. It's all about the unforeseen consequences of decisions that look much better in isolation than in the full context of the situation. And for everybody saying Kachiko deserves to go to the Traitors' Grove . . . she hasn't betrayed the Scorpion, and that's the main reason people get sent there. If she'd destroyed the edict, then as Shoju says, yeah, she'd be toast -- that would be the point at which she'd be showing disloyalty. But the Traitors' Grove isn't for people who make mistakes. It's for those who put themselves or someone else ahead of their clan. Which Kachiko has not done.

So love the fact that we see both brothers have these black out moments of anger. The idea that the mother regrets Daisetsu is also interesting. (There is confirmation she loves but had basically abandoned the boys. Such a loving family situation that is.)
It does occur to me that when Satori previously talked about Daisetsu being mean, he may have been right and that the switch flip for Daisetsu we see may not have been the first time.

I would argue that Yoshi's presence makes Hantei Sotorii not a one-of. Sotorii isn't even capable of the basic appearance of being samurai, and it was only his being Heir that allowed him to keep skating on. Kakita Yoshi doesn't have the duelist skills of his brother, nor the political acumen of his rivals in the court.  What he does have is status, and the position to leverage it for his own benefit.  Also, helps explain how the Crane have lost control of the political battlefield. Yoshi's bad at his job, but can't be criticized or replaced, except by Hotaru, who doesn't have the cachet inside her own clan to smack down a family daimyo and likely doesn't know the scope of his foolishness.

My question is: Would Kakita Yoshi have become Imperial Chancellor if he hadn’t been the Kakita Daimyo?
We see him set to take credit for Asami freeing herself, so this can certainly imply a situation where due to his noble birth, he’s been able to climb upwards on the skills of subordinates and has basically promoted himself to a position he’s not actually defy enough to handle.

"See to it that this scroll finds its way to a particular place in the Crane Guesthouse, Lord Hametsu had said.  If you accomplish nothing else, you must accomplish this"  and we know from Ujina's monologue later in the story that this is some time after Kaede marries Toturi, which itself occurs just before Toturi becomes Emerald Champion, so this is around the same time that Kuwanan turns up still alive and in active investigation mode in A Crane Takes Flight.
So, if the letter is genuine, it may be how Hametsu confirmed his own suspicions about Kachiko, and he sat on it until he found a way to use it hurt the Crane more than the blowback would harm the Scorpion. If the letter is a forgery, its one that was created using his knowledge of the relationship.

Yeah, from what we get of Hametsu in the RPG sidebars, this is a personal mad-on for him.  He hates that Kachiko has exposed the Scorpion to weakness in pursuit of happiness.  It's intensely personal for him.  He wouldn't involve Shoju, he'd try to manufacture a situation where Kachiko went down alone.

I get ya, and you're absolutely right!  He manages to get ahold of a critical piece of information despite Kachiko's attempts at a communication blackout.  I wouldn't say that Yoshi's incompetent, I'd say that he's decided that what's good for him is good for the Crane.  Between him & Toshimoko, he's the one that got on with their brother-in-law Satsume, so he's particularly entrenched in the previous administration. It's no surprise that as a result of Hotaru's attitude towards her father that she's more inclined towards the uncle she likes. So, he's a family daimyo whose Champion he doesn't get on with, who's best friends with the Champion of their bitterest enemy, and that's before he finds out she's in a relationship with his personal rival and the wife of their main political opposition.  Throw in a healthy dash of more-perfect-than-thou Crane smugness and its not hard to see how he gets to a point where he feels he knows best for the Clan.
