The next book, the next movie, the next comic, et al.  Everything's subject to the next great idea (sarcasm intended).  it will be whatever a writer decides the future is.  Broom-Boy becomes the Jedi Child Emperor?  Sure, why not?  It is rather pointless to speculate and use "reason", as we've seen with TFA, TLJ, and RoS.  Maybe I should have written, "There you go tryin' to use logic again!"
If you're going to get into it, well, did the First Order ALL retreat into this secret armada and then get destroyed?  So the whole galaxy saw the FO LEAVE and abandon all of their seats of power?  They'd of been celebrating and word would have spread fast!  *Logic* (I think) would say most of the First order is still intact and on the outside of what went down.

Vader is Love reacted to KungFuFerret in Please Stop Calling them Grey Jedi.
I know I'm tilting at windmills here, as it's become such a commonly used term that my hopes are doomed to failure, but I will try anyway!   But hey, as EVERY...SINGLE...STAR WARS thing tells us, Hope is everything!  It will save the day with it's ability to.....hope at stuff!  Because hope is just that powerful, and it has NOTHING at all to do with fanservice name dropping to New Hope in an effort to appease the fanbase!!  So here's hoping it will work!
Seriously, don't call people who want to play with Dark side powers and actions but not be a bad guy Grey Jedi.   They are not "grey" Jedi.   This is someone wanting to gain the positive benefits of the term Jedi, in common usage and understanding, (someone who is powerful, but also a force for good in the universe), but also without having to actually adhere to their philosophies and doctrine of behavior.     The Jedi Code is very clear on what someone has to do to be a Jedi, and doing things that contradict that, mean you are NOT a Jedi.   Also, someone who is basically a Sith, but tries to not say they are a murderhobo, because of some token mention of the Jedi codes, and occasionally not killing and enslaving the people around them, equally doesn't make them a "Grey Jedi" from the other direction.  They are simply a less homicidal psychopath, than the other homicidal psychopaths they are around.
It's like trying to say you are a carnivorous vegan.  Or a murderous pacifist.   They are terms that are by definition, contrary and mutually exclusive.

That is all, proceed to ignore me and continue calling them that anyway!  Because I know you all will!   *tilts at a windmill one last time*

    A thought about families.

The Skywalker line was an anomaly. Literally: Shmi Skywalker woke up pregnant one day, and nobody seemed to know why. As far as anyone can tell, Anakin was the result of immaculate conception by the Force itself.

    What if that never happened?

Well, around the time Anakin should have been born, the first seeds of the Galactic Empire were sown by Palpatine. This was when he started building influence in the Republic and the nascent Separatist movement, recruiting Count Dooku, commissioning the Clone Armies and their support vessels, etc. Without Anakin, this culminates in the annexation of Naboo by the Trade Federation, this time for good. Padme Amidala likely dies with her planet's liberty. Obi-Wan Kenobi probably still defeats Darth Maul and escapes the planet, but is unable to save it.

The Empire rises from the ashes of civil war. Palpatine never reveals himself to Anakin, and never has to confront Mace Windu directly. He is able to betray the Jedi in safety. Kenobi and Yoda go into hiding.

The Rebellion fares poorly. The Death Star is invulnerable to conventional assault; Rebel strikecraft cannot breach its vulnerable exhaust port. Alderaan and Yavin IV are destroyed. More worlds join them. A second wave of uprisings occurs, but the Empire is transitioning further away from the Republic. They've started harvesting children and enacting ever more brutal purges, moving in the direction of the First Order and eventually, as planet-killer tech improves, the horrific power of the Final Order.

Palpatine's hitherto-unknown family remains in safety on some hidden planet. There is no Rebellion to set them free, allowing them to temporarily escape the Sith cult (an assumption on my part regarding their timeline). In time, Rey Palpatine is born and presented to her grandfather the Emperor. She's excellent: a powerful host for the Sith legacy. Raised in privilege, Rey is prepared to become Empress. There is nobody to share her pain.

Emperor Palpatine refuses to die, of course, so it falls to Rey to seize the throne herself. Which she does, finally completing the Rule of Two and forging another link in the chain of the Sith. She inherits a fleet of planet-killers and absolutely no compassion whatsoever. The Emperor had to fight for every bit of his power; the Empress was raised to expect it. She's just as evil as the Emperor, but has none of his patience or sympathy.

The Emperor was nothing compared to the Final Empress.

As you can imagine, this does not end well for life in the Galaxy... what little remains of it. Eventually, new planets form and new life evolves, but the legacy of the Final Empress has scarred the Galaxy forever.

That was the Saga of the Palpatines.

The Saga of the Skywalkers slams into the Palpatines out of nowhere, and derails it comprehensively. Three generations of Skywalker are born, and all of them die sacrificing themselves for others. They walk the line between light and darkness, and all ultimately reject the dark, even if it costs them everything. In the end, none of them are left. Their story is done, and they depart the universe as mysteriously as they entered it.

But Rey Palpatine goes from the lap of privilege to being a slave on some nowhere sandball, and that's enough to save her... and the Galaxy.

While they're at it, the Skywalkers also bring down the Empire before it can bring its industrial tyranny to bear on the Galaxy at large. Luke and Leia save everything from going the way of the First Order. A generation grows up knowing their own parents. They can never imagine what horrors they averted, but they save the Galaxy anyway. Luke and Leia might experience doubt in their final years, but once they're done, I imagine they have a better vision of their role in things, the genocides and soul-crushing social destruction that the Palpatines would have wrought if left unchecked.

That's the biggest of big pictures, and I think I like it.

    Also:
Friend (GM): Palpatines force lighting was ridiculously overpowered, kinda DragonBall-esque. So bad.
Me: Yeah, sure. Well, do you think I could combine Unleash with Battle Meditation, to get the the range up to planetary scale for a few strain? Also I'd like to start with force rating 50.

Hm when I think about it, Palps more or less killed himself, since his lightning was reflected. Thing is Rey needed the power of the other Jedi to withstand.
Holy crap you're right! Didn't realize it until now...
Yeah, this. I always watch the movies with friends and most of them like Star Wars, but they don't "feel" it. As we discussed TRoS afterwards, one of my guys said he didn't like the movie because of plotholes. Then he began with a scientific explanation why a ship cannot hyperjump into the atmosphere.

Dunno about this, but well, JJ was the guy to set the whole thing up in TFA.

Same here. I watched it twice on the first day, in different cinemas. Made me a bit sad.
I agree, that the movie diminishes Anakins Legacy as the Chosen One. BUT Palps even said, that he was dead. So Anakin destroyed him. Unfortunately this old man had a possibility to come back. Nonetheless the galaxy had peace for 30 years.
I just realize, this ties in with my displeasure about Rey being a Palpatine. She should have been a nobody, backed up by the power of the Dyad and by the force, which needs a vessel to again face the rising darkness.

Probably a side-effect of the IMAX theater we were in, but when Palpy did the Force storm disabling the ships - which was just so cool in that "only Star Wars can do this" way - the whole theater shook and it was awesome.
My fiancée grabbed my arm and we were both tensing back in our seats.

Considering Palpatine's age, he may have had the relations that produced a child back when he was a senator of Naboo and wasn't necessarily needing to maintain his guard so much. I have little doubt he could have faked "trust and intimacy" to accomplish such a thing.

That's assuming he did it the old-fashioned natural way.  I wouldn't put it past him to have used alternative methods to conceive a child, possibly as a means of extending his life once it became clear that Vader wasn't going to live up to his potential (and possibly before the idea of turning Luke came up), only for the child to be effectively abandoned once Palps was removed from the scene.
Which on that tangent, brings me to another, this regarding my personal dislike of the "Rey is a Palpatine" plot element.  What may have worked better would have been that rather than Rey being a direct biological descendant of Palps, he was instead behind her creation, using various methods such as cloning and genetic manipulation (using gene data from various Jedi Council members in addition to Anakin and other powerful Force users) to create what should have been the "perfect" host body for his spirit.  And while perhaps initially dismayed this "perfect vessel" was genetically female, he decided that power and extended life was far more important than worrying about something as "trivial" to him as gender.  Rey's "parents" weren't her biological parents, but instead a pair of individuals (possibly ex-Rebels or Imperial defectors?) that rescued her from the lab where this powerful Force-sensitive baby was cultivated, and raised her as their own daughter.
On yet another tangent, this movie does put Palp's whole goading of Luke to strike him down with all his hatred in a very different light, though I doubt Vader knew what would have happened.  If Vader hadn't blocked Luke's enraged swing, it's quite possible that Palp's spirit would have taken over Luke's body, making for what would probably be that 'verse's darkest timeline.

Regardless of what you think of Kylo Ren, TRoS (again) confirms that Adam Driver is an amazing actor!

I agree, that Rey better had been a nobody. For those who desperately need reasons for her strength in the Force, this Diad(?) thing should be sufficient.
About Rey being a Palpatine and so defeating her grandfather I also dislike, that it diminishes the Prophecy of the Chosen One.
IRONIC though, that good ol Sheev gets roasted similar to Revenge of the Sith. Mace Windu deflected the force lightning and so did Rey.
