MaoYoruichi reacted to defendi in Roll20 Character Sheet Available
The pull request finished today and the Roll20 character sheet for the beta is now generally available from the character sheet pull down. You no longer need to be a Pro user and install it as a custom sheet.
I update these FAIRLY quickly, usually over the weekend, but the official, freely available sheet, will always lag a little behind, as I have to wait for the pull request to go through and they are done in batches.

Also, it's good to remember that, contrary to european swords,  the handle and guard on a katana are very easy to change. Technically speaking, the more wealthy/lucky samurais would have different pomels and guards for different occasions (formal, parade, war,...).
Therefore it's easy to hide the fact that your blades are mismatched.
However newly forged blades would often benefit from more advanced forging techniques and general knowledge (curve of the blade being important to optimize its use, length, tempering, ...). But ancestral blades have more chances to have their spirits awakened and being nemuranai.

Explosive successes essentially grant you what would be 1k1 of the same type of dice in the old system, except you have the choice of keeping it or not.
And no, you can't swap out results, you choose which dice to keep from the original roll before rolling explosive successes.

Exactly! If anything, the bookkeeping happens during the scene ("The bushi is Dazed and I have Water Fist activated but if I roll I will almost certainly go over my Composure, and I'd need two opportunities to end the fight now anyway...") while after the scene ends you just go "Ok we're back to normal and I lose uhh two Strife".

I second nameless ronin. If your main point of contention with the rules system is one of the simplest and most straightforward systems in the game, I'm inclined to think you are misunderstanding something. When a scene ends you heal strife by your water ring, and "deactivate" persistent effects like kiho, ignored (dis)advantages and conditions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only thing that happens when a scene ends is healing Strife by your Water ring, right?

Or the yari user needs to be in Water stance and use Water opportunities to teleport around the battlefield, as they are still 1 Range Band of extra movement per Opportunity.
Water is currently overtuned to the point where you need to use Water stance to fight a Water stance without being kited to death.
In fact, want something extremely toxic?
Win initiative as a Water User.
Move into range 0 of your opponent. Punch them with Open Palm Style. Immobilize them, and spend rest of your opportunities on moving out. If needed, use your extra action to get to safe distance.
Your opponent is immobilized. They cant move at all. They shake their fist at you.
Next turn, you repeat this nonsense, until your opponent quits.

It seems the first one, when setting the stance, has been scrapped in the update. It was part of the same section on p. 164 that has been entirely replaced with the new wording. So now, you only get to move one single range band, before or after your Action, and then have to use the maneuver action (twice if in Water stance).

The best way to go at this is to set up combos. For example, Fire Stance + Strike + Striking as Fire + burn all Opportunity on Critical Strike is the "Critical Nuking Combo" - each time you need to wreck someone's day, you pull out this combo instead of pondering on your choices. Combos tend to be straightforward because of your character's attributes, and once you have a good arsenal of them, the game will become a lot simpler.

MaoYoruichi got a reaction from brotherhoodblade in I Feel Like There Might be too Many Families For New Players
I have two players new to Rokugan in my game and neither of them had a real problem with the families. Since chargen starts you off picking a clan, the total amount of families they had to read through was 3-5, not 29. Plus I talked a lot to them about each clan's archetypes and role in Rokugan. One of them went with a Togashi Tattooed Monk, and the other opted for an Ide with the Shinjo Outrider school (although he certainly would have picked Ide Emissary if it had been available).

Thank you, this is really helpful! Of the three, the Kuni purifier is an experienced roleplayer with a lot of 4e games under her belt, the other two are new to Rokugan but have played a fair bit of D&D, so building arcs around the Kuni sounds like a good plan.

If the duel happened in the scene immediately following its declaration - which would be strange, seeing as how duels need to be sanctioned and blessed - you should have at least had the chance to heal your Strife by your Water Ring. You could also forgo the Assessment check to heal three more. Furthermore, an in-between downtime scene in which you can follow your Passion should be enough to get you to lose three more and another opportunity to heal Strife by your Water Ring.

I like the drama to be focused on people and their emotions, not on Shadowlands dungeon crawls. Shugenja are extremely few in number, terrifyingly powerful, but also often prone to instability due to their very nature. Meeting a Shugenja should be if not disturbing, at least memorable.
