Yeh. The system is underwhelming and the premise that all characters will be commanding troops is quite silly. Makes it pretty useless otherwise.
There is a very decent system in 4th edition that works basically this way:
    - Conflict takes X rounds depending on scale. On each round commanders roll certain Atribute/skill (Perception/Battle) and compete for succeses.
    - On each round characters decide wether they want to be at the front (in the thick) of the conflict, or less engaged (there are different "areas").
    - Each character rolls Water + Battle (i think) and depending on how engaged they are and if their side is winning or losing, they receive Glory, damage and there is a chance that a Heroic Opportunity pops up. You get a lot of examples for those but I prefer to make my own for each battle. Those are mini-encounters... You have to save a fallen ally, or engage one of the enemy commanders/lieutenants, save you army's flag from being captured, give a honorable death to an agonizing rival, etc... Heroic Opportunities if completed succesfully give points towards battle resolution and can help win the overall battle.
Imho its so much better. I just adapted it, lowering the amount of damage characters take each round, since Wounds are now a lot less, but it stil works very well.

I took a picture of my map and edited it with Paint to remove the secret room. I printed it and gave it to my players to move around the castle. When they discovered the secret room I took out the original map.

Heavy use of structured time might work, yes.
I ve played a lot of RPGs where this was necessary. Any RPG with a "roll to acquire item" mechanic is such a case, since people will spam rolls until they get their super-rare rifle of damnation + 4 with laser sights. Back then, I simply limited the number of rolls allowed per location, because there is just so much shopping you can do in a place before you d have to wait for new deliveries and such. Ingame gambling is another of these problematic mechanics in many RPGs, where if its skill-based, you need to limit it so a party doesnt just stay in town a few days "making money" with a bunch of rolls before they move on. You cant ALWAYS put time limits on everything.
It really comes down to a decades-old problem: the closed door. A group of players stands before a closed door in a dungeon, and the barbarian tries to break it. The strength roll fails. There is no really pressing time, and on the other side is nothing that will react to repeated hammering on the door that isnt already alert, so there is basically no reason for the barbarian not to keep trying until he rolls the natural 20, or whatever he needs. Why? Because we have quietly decided that his roll reflects ONE ATTEMPT. The roll didnt reflect his ability to break down the door, it reflected how much random strength he put into that particular kick. Once you consider a roll the entire result of your total effort into a task, and a measurement of what you are capable of under these circumstances, it starts making more sense. Then the roll means the barbarian cant open the door by force, and there needs to be another solution. (of course then the wimpy mage comes with a natural 20 and it all ceases to make sense anyway).
I am leaning towards the general perspective in all RPGs, in order to unclutter gameplay and have it make at least cineastic sense (you dont see John McClane hammering on that elevator door 10 minutes straight) that a roll represents the sum effort of your attempts to deal with the task at hand. If you fail, that approach simply does not work.
So if the Ritual didnt work, this particular instance of Affliction apparently cannot be removed by the ritual you (or the person doing it) knows. Doesnt help if you go again tomorrow. Or if you reforge that blade and fail, you now have a lump of steel in useless condition and will basically need to forge an entirely new weapon, or buy one, not just come again tomorrow as if nothing happened.
This allows for Taint and Affliction to work very well within the spirit and rules of the game, and allows for some GM leeway to make the story more interesting. If somebody fails the ritual, has no jade tea, has no monk nearby, no shugenja who can help, basically lacks the entire support infrastructure of the crab clan, then the last thing he MAY be able to try is to search for somebody within the next 2 weeks who has access to these things. He cannot sit at his camp and just keep doing the ritual every day. So our case of unprepared affliction becomes a little quest for salvation. In the extreme case of none of these things being availabe within 2 weeks of travel, I guess you could say that this is how samurai get tainted. After all, one ring of taint is barely a problem anyway.
If the same character manages to be caught out 5 times with affliction without any support system and keeps failing his rituals, I think he is supposed to be one of the bad dudes, anyway ūüėõ

    Depends what you played before.
L5R is way more crunchy than D&D 5th.
    But less than Shadowrun.
It also have broken and rough mechanics in many places, which is probably the core of the issue. The foundation is good, but some of the polishing/finishing is off, especially in the details.
Nothing that makes it impossible to play, far from it. But you will often raise an eyebrow when a mechanic fails to achieve a sensible result (for better or worse) or seems to be absurdly crunchy and gamey in the wrong places and very vague and undefined in places where it should require a bit more structure.
    Your mileage may vary.

Please do not include actually published rules in this thread, so we are not infringing on FFG's sales / access and stuff. If something is a free online DLC, however, please feel free to embed the link. A lot of these are going to have "Pg XX" references at present as I do not have the Core Rules in front of me. I will be correcting them as I have those. Special Thanks to @DangerBob for writing up several of these!

    @AK_Aramis

One of my player took the advantage Daredevil, and the disadvantage Fear of Death.
And I was like "well that won't work..."

Duel system is broken only for Iaijutsu duels (the other types of duels are fine), the 2 unique actions to duels, predict and center, being atrocious, pointless and almost unusable. I'm sorry to say, if you think this is good design, you worry me.
though, if you don't care about predict and center being totally useless and never used, and ok with Iaijutsu duels being played around earth stance and incapacitating the opponent. Then yes, they still "work".
Movement system is a mess. It is not detailed enough and on the other hand it is heavily tactical. But then you have "squads" of opponents ? In a system that have range bands as precise as L5R does, it is just awful. Not to mention their grid rules are designed totally different and are bad too.
Range band system worked great in Star Wars, why come up with something kind of "more precise but less thought of" for this game ?

advantage and disadvantage system have a ring attached to them, why? and some "tags" that means absolutely nothing. Please, clean up your shiite designers. Also they are sooo open to interpretation that you cannot remotely say they are balanced or not, they just "are" (which I'm ok with if that is the intention).

schools are 1 special ability. nothing else. the only other ability is hidden at the end of the progression nobody will ever reach. plus, they manged to mess up the writing so badly giving thechniques like Rushing Avalanche as starting techniques for Hiruma and Matsu. How did that not get double checked?

iaijutsu strike cannot do critical hits. I mean. What is an iaijutsu duel again?

titles, the way status is gained from them is inconsistent between Core and EE.

a lot of abuse can be made by intentionally missing TN on a check (like gaining void points with disadvantages, or abusing mechanical opportunities). you can do some SUPER CHEESY stuff with that.

talking about opportunities, the example could have been way more streamlined and balanced, right now it is very bloated (especially p.329) and absolutely not thought of; p.328 earth martial "reduce critical severity of the next critical strike you take" but then people cannot crit you when you are in earth stance... lol.
p.329, you have stuff like "gain an extra kept dice set to an opportunity result to your next check you make this game session" seriously who thought about that gamey thing?
please. you hav2 pages of examples, can you design them properly?

spiritual backlash, since you have 100% control if you trigger them or not, can you at least design them with more randomness? or cool factor?

then lets not talk about the dozen of typos.

almost every 30 minutes of play, we come upon a rule that requires the GM to interpret and tweak because the core is too mushy.
3 months in, they can't even correct the typos and page mixup in their player ressources section PDF.

edit: conditions, how come a Dying 5 round is basically weaker and less consequent than a maimed arm ? It is kind of counter intuitive that you'd rather take a severity 13 crit rather than a severity 9.
bleeding, the way it does criticals... on a character with lots of endurance it explode him right away, on a character with 4 endurance, it can basically only damage his armor
burning, why not calculate it end of turn ? instead of when performing an action ? just to screw up water stance? badly designed.

and stop saying "the game is not suitable to your playstyle". that is not the issue at all. I like this game, it's just so **** buggy and unfinished. Why excuse sloppy work ?

Honestly, I can't say the game is all that good. That's my opinion of course, but since you asked...
I feel there are some fairly significant issues with the concept. The narrative part, supposedly a big selling point compared to previous editions and certainly an element that informs a large part of the mechanics, isn't all that convincing to me: ninjo vs giri and the strife that results in doesn't go anywhere. Strife is very pertinent when it comes to contests between characters, but otherwise it's largely inconsequential - for anyone really, but especially for characters that don't adhere too closely to being part of a Great Clan. The approach mechanic for the skill system appears interesting at the surface, but is in practice all over the place in terms of execution. The curriculum mechanic for schools is great, but the schools themselves are fairly bland. Many things, particularly things pertaining to balance, are left for the GM to interpret and manage; as a GM myself I enjoy having the freedom to make changes as I see fit, but I have that freedom anyway regardless of system or game - what I don't really have in this instance is a properly balanced and conceived foundation.
The biggest point in favour is that this is the currently supported edition of the Legend of the 5 Rings RPG. I apologize for sounding so negative, I just don't see any truly shining features.

I think you meant; "it isn't great for Iaijutsu Duels"
Because for duels to the death, the current system is really good.

It falls flat in these areas; Iaijutsu Duels (hello earth stance).
It also have two actions, Predict and Center, that are nearly useless.

But, for duel to the death, with each opponent striking at each other, putting strife, healing strife, doing small critical hits and/or fatigue damage etc... It will probably end up in 2-3 rounds at maximum when one of the combatant is incapacitated or a finishing blow is triggered.
IMO duel to the death are very fun. Had absolutely no issue with them and the fantasy of them.

The basic elements of the beta rulebook, plus FFG's edits, plus Beta tester's comments, all went to make up the final product. But not everything was carried through - particularly NPCs, for some reason. On the off chance it's useful to your games, here's a basic run-down of the stuff you might be missing or which was removed, that you might want to consider adding back in as house rules.
Prepared Invocations (throwing potions does overlap Kaito Sacred Arrows)

Skirmish Actions (as it's from the first iteration of the beta movement is too fast but the concept is interesting)

Actually earth is quite powerful. In testing Hida samurais with high composure can bid higher during initiative giving them a fair chance vs traditionally good duelists like Kakita.
F.e. In one of our tests I was running a Hida vs one of my players' Kakita. He bid quite high thinking I would do the same (which I did). During focus phase I predicted Air and he did strike with Air (he shouldn't have). So bam! He took more strife becoming compromised. He had to swap to a worse stance and he couldn't keep stride dice so he did strike first but he missed (I attacked with air too, thinking he would predict Earth) !
Water is a must if you don't have a iaijutsu technique.
That said, I get what you are saying. The thing is that we are talking about iaijutsu duels so I expect agile duelists to be better at them. Also remember that if you challenge a Hida samurai the challenged traditionally gets to chose dueling conditions. So the Hida will call for a warrior's test (to incapacitation) and prolly beat the Kakita to a bleeding pulp. "Ha! You strike first but I laugh at your puny blows". Earth is very good in skirmishes and I can see Earth oriented samurais being great in all other type of duels/clashes.

I see what you mean. I wanted to give Void some use in duels, like Air (focus) and Fire (staredown). Earth and Water are pretty good already since Earth adds a lot to composure and helps you resist crits (somewhat relevant in duels to first blood) and water let's you "compete" at iaijutsu even if you don't have a technique. So I thought about Center and had to go with Ring dice. I could make it a Void / Meditation roll and just reserve dice up to your void, but that would prolly be too good?
