Dude, just tested it out on the crucible. it's awesome. The combo with reverse time is even more broken than usual.

Admittedly, I had library access and nepenthe in ym first hand so I jsut got the ball rolling so easy but still.

Ouch yeah the lack of organized play would kill it for most people I think. Hopefully we’ll see some digital support given all the cards are present on the app and crucible is big enough the devs should be aware of its popularity as it would give those like yourself reason to keep investing in the game.

Yes, it is what’s keeping me sane these days.
Other than the obvious UI shortcomings, I really miss proper matchmaking. Having more competitive matches goes a long way of making the experience fun. And I am not forced to play my best decks or get pwned.

Love the crucible but it would be nice to get something that functioned on mobile via the app perhaps.

Oh I totally agree that the break down of the deck on the system is awesome. I just really dislike that the SAS can fluctuate. I think looking at the cards & synergies is ultimately more important than just the SAS ratings.

Well I would hardly say SAS is a bad system but yeah it’s never something you can trust 100% it just is a educated guess. What’s nice about it is it breaks down a lot of info about how your deck compares to other decks out there. Ie does it generate more or less aember than other decks, is it lacking in creature control or aember control? Etc. It gives you a glance at what the deck does good and bad and those metrics are what you should pay attention to more than just the overall SAS number (note the Aerc I find is often more important than the SAS) as the system is not always able to catch special nuances, combos and more importantly a players own decisions and thus play style all which impact the flow of any game.

I get that, the problem is that it's also incredibly good for playing on the turn you've forged a key and your opponent is about to. You've dropped to 0, even if they're sitting at 6 the one card puts you halfway towards getting your next key. It's good for catch up AND for snowballing your opponent. A chain or two on the card would leave it playable in a desperate situation while making it less appealing in a "win-more" situation.
(Or even worse... a player has had an ether spider blocking them all game - they finally kill it to get all that aember they've been denied... and opponent bait & switches next turn - yes I feel dirty for doing that a few times myself)

I don’t think it’s the wrong direction, I mean I’m not crazy about the keys but including playmate and deck boxes is definitely a good idea to increase prize support.

With that attitude I don't doubt the store owners killed the game. It is an unfortunate situation since FFG OP depends on stores so much with no way for clubs to get organizing easily unless backed by a store. Also an issue with the player base, though, since we FFG gamers are so addicted to promo bling.
Most tournaments I was at had plenty of decks in the price pool, that's definitly on your store if they had stock (and if not, store credit always is an option).

Even in your case for Truebaru, if you are at 6, most of the time you are not going to want to go over as 7+ aember is danger territory against many cards. But again, I agree with @TwitchyBait in that your negative scenarios are obscuring your ability to see the card in other's eyes. It is rated high because it is a fun card to play in general and it can lead to some crazy plays. Sure, there are cards that are less variance-based, but it still matters entirely on what your other 35 cards are. As a single card strategy, WW is nowhere near something like Bait and Switch, but there are just as many times where Bait and Switch is a dead card in your hand as well against certain players or certain decks. Every turn you hold onto it and don't play it is like a psuedo-Succubus you can't get rid of.

There are lots of cards people also play "just for the aember", so playing one card for one aember is still better than not playing one or discarding for no aember, especially if that is what you deck requires you to do. It is also going to depend on what your backup Logos cards are for those turns where you have 2-3 creatures to reap along with your WW which could set you up for a different house next turn. WW into Dominator Bauble? Neat, it will be ready for the next time you call Dis. WW into Key Charge without 7 aember? You discarded the top card of your deck and a card from your hand, that is two cards closer to getting everything back. You have two cards left in your deck, one of them that loses you the game and one that wins you the game? Then ask what are the odds of winning greater than giving your opponent a turn with unknown information? In almost every scenario, WW is as powerful as your knowledge of your deck and your ability to play it.

You can theorycraft all you want, but it is not going to actually matter until you are already in your game.

Chances of playing something you want are almost always higher than something you don't want. And if they're not, you don't have to play WW that turn. Another benefit is that it helps go through your deck more quickly, which is generally useful.
I won't argue that it's the best card, but I'm almost never sad to see one or more in a deck (getting three in a deck with 3 Gateway to Dis and a Key Hammer would be an example of an exception to that)

From your list, I think Key Hammer/Shatter Storm is the biggest contender of "card you don't want to play randomly". Everything else has its uses and goes back to "you will know when to use it and when not". Stuff like Kelfi Dragon and Tsubaru have restrictions on if you can play them and if you can't, then they just sit on top and you got an aember. Horseman and Tendrils are weak enough that playing them is not going to be backbreaking.

True, you can sculpt scenarios to where playing it is going to be bad, and we could counter with other what-if's and what-ifn't's. That is the problem with looking at cards in a vacuum. Just taking Chota Hazri from your list, I could say that sure it could get you another key, but how many games do you actually play with it where it gets you a key versus you discard it to draw a better card, or it is in your opening hand after a mulligan and you feel forced to call Untamed so you don't lose any aember or else you just effectively mulliganed twice since you can't discard it until you draw some Untamed cards.

Even going to answer your question regarding dead cards, no card is truly dead since you can discard it if you don't need it. Part of leveling up your play is learning precisely what works and when in certain situations. I would consider the EPs as far more dead than the WW, but also having three in the deck, I know that I can pitch two and still have a third if I reeeealy need it. If my opponent is keeping me locked down at 3+ aember, I am probably going to rely on the EPs to keep them in a similar boat while I play to my outs.

You can also look as WW as a way to play through your deck quicker so you can shuffle again since you are playing one card from your deck while also playing the wormhole from your hand. That is two cards more than before and you gained an aember along with whatever potential aember from the card you played.

The assualt ruling is correct, assault deals damage BEFORE fighting resolves so if the assault damage would kill shadow self it’s not around for damage from fighting to then resolve.
Tendrils is pain is indeed two different instances of damage you first deal 1 to everything, shadow self absorbs all damage from its neighbors, if this damage kills shadow self it is destroyed. Then you deal an additional 3 after if your opponent forged a key. If these occurred at the same time you’d get something worded more like “deal 1 damage to all creature OR 4 damage if your opponent forged a key on their last turn”

But as I stated, I know that there are the EPs in the deck, so I am less likely to just fire off the WW blindly and will prefer the other houses until I have the EP in my hand to discard or have already forged my key for the turn and am back down to 0-1 aember where I am less likely to be affected should one be turned over. If I have no aember, I gain one from the WW and lose none. There are also going to be times where an opponent tried to gather enough aember to try and race and I want to set them back for their hubris thinking they could defeat me...er, ahem.

WW adds depth to the play styles of the decks that have it because it is one of the cards that just flat out says "screw the rules, I have money".

Also, it is not the local game store's responsibility to promote a community of play. They are there to help give you a place to play, but it is ultimately the players that dictate what the owner's should divert their resources towards.

There are many formats to play that don't involve needing sealed product and as others have suggested, players can put up prizes as well. It could just be your area, but where I am in MN there are chainbound events daily that I could go to, but I have the opposite problem of not having enough free time. I have played in sealed and archon events which typically have 30+ people on a Friday night. There are also stores that post in the fan-made facebook group that get about 6 to fire.

Product supply being low is a double edged sword. It means people want your product, but if you don't predict how much you may need effectively, it can burn you like in your scenario. Fantasy Flight doesn't need to supply anything to the stores to run events, but they do. The fact that you can do sealed for $10-15 or bring your own for $0-$5, none of that goes back to Fantasy Flight for what they provide. That is the store making their profit (and very little at that these days).

As for the prizes they provide, I am a fan of the metal keys, house pins, and metal damage counters. The mini cards get used at the stores I have been to, but I still prefer glass beads and plastic aember bits (A pack of 200 is usually like $5 on amazon). They come in large and small sizes and all the colors your could want. Work with your players in the area to see if they are interested in making House Kits using the promo chain trackers and certain colors. You can fit a fridge magnet in a sleeve behind the tracker and use a small washer to keep track of your chains without worrying about knocking it around.

Start your own group on Facebook, Slack, Discord, etc. Drop by your local library and print out a few signs advertising a KeyForge group. When KeyForge first came out, I tried to get my hands on as many decks as I could just to give two to each of my friends so they could always have something to play with their friends and family for little to no investment. Some of them gave me something in trade, some didn't, and others have given the decks back which just went to other friends. I have gotten at least 10 people I know of interested in it who may never have touched it otherwise. Then out of those 10, three or four of them have come with me to various events.

When chainbound events were announced, I called the four stores I frequent the most to see what their plans were. A couple were concerned that there was not enough interest because they couldn't keep product in stock, to which I reminded them that they sold out and that doesn't happen often with games like Magic, Pokemon, etc. Those will take up valuable space for them sometimes and eventually they have to clearance it out to make room. With KeyForge, it was in and gone. Stores around me all over the Twin Cities were continually out. I live next to the Fantasy Flight Game Center and they are continually backlogged on orders. It is not like they have a magic button that just prints it on demand.

Some stores do theme nights where players are encouraged to use specific houses. No official prize support, but there is still plenty of turnout. The latest one was for Untamed, were you the hunters or the mighty beasts? Then they tallied which side had more wins and everyone had a great time playing the game they enjoy. Again, no prizes and no cost to play. It was the shared experience of being with others playing and enjoying the same thing as you.

So instead of complaining that your scene is dead and FF needs to fix it, remember:

"It is not what your gaming community does for you, but what you can do for your gaming community."

Go to the empty store and bring your friends. That way when someone else calls and asks if anyone is there playing KeyForge, the store can say "Yeah, there is a great group of people here now".

Got several stores near me that do weekly chainbound. Sorry to hear your shops lost some attendance but if it helps the new set does include new starters meaning more of those if people really want them.
Prize support is mostly aember shards from chainbound but purhaps suggest your shop order acrylics online, aember pieces can be super cheap (got mine for 6 cents per piece), lots of people also make damage tokens, chain trackers, deck boxes etc. All they’d have to do is use some entry fee money to cover costs. Our stores tend to do 5 entry + cost of a deck when we do sealed or just 5 for archon format and usually gives all the excess as store credit which works well to. Thing is with how the decks function you can’t really do promo cards so the aember shards and promo stun/power is what they can do unless they start releasing some of the stuff we’re seeing at vault tours in promo kits but I don’t see that as likely granted it would be nice if you could exchange your shards online and pay shipping for those of us that don’t have vault tours close enough by to go to.
