    1) If there are only 10 Crab players, and the best of them finishes at 107th place... odds are they aren't making much of a choice.  The last 2 clans are only going to have 4-5 role options left and none may be optimal.
    2) The roles don't change deck building that much.  We're talking about doubling up on 1 province element or +3 influence.  I don't think that is going to wreck the game balance that much...  Sure, you may need to face Shameful Display and Kuroi Mori, but do you really think you couldn't win the game because of that?
Do we know what the role character cards are yet?  Pls link if you do, I haven't seen them yet.  I still think the role system is going to be a much smaller influence of power than people are fearing.  The system is new, but its also toned down.  As the card pool expands we may find the initial role cards chosen by each clan is no longer optimal either...

Thinking it over I am actually really interested to see a year if hate drafts.
The Lion become the Keeper of the void seeking one Ness with everything. The Crab seek the voids wisdom, both clans becoming more introspective.
The Dragon take seekers of air and travel the lands spreading knowledge and currying favor from their neighbors.
The Crane taking fire, a warlord leading them from one battle to another.
I can't think of anything else. But I am okay with the flavor.

My personal enjoyment out of all this is actually down to the Hatamoto system. The changes in seeker or keeper status may influence people lower in the clan to jump ship, but if they influence a Hatamoto then they cease being one. And while that might not matter to some, it will to others.

It also creates a space for certain individuals to be either open and come to a clan consensus over what they feel would be their best direction to go, or is someone gonna be tyrannical and just take it? Sometimes in life, when in a system larger than yourself you have to accept decisions you don't like from on high...
It adds a wonderful dimension of flavour and almost a role playing aspect of being in and representing an actual clan.
On top of being a rad way of adding 3 influence to the deck. When I'm Scorpion Hatamoto, we'll be doing a lot of that.

I think the way to look at it is as a boon to your deck.  You either get 3 extra influence, or an extra province of type X if you want it - Yay!
It's just deck building rules.  If we want to complain about these rules then we should complain just as much about only being able to include 3 of one card in your deck, or being limited to 40-45 cards per deck.  The fact that the best player in your clan chooses what that slight rule change happens to be feels pretty irrelevant to me.  In pretty much any event it is a good thing because it will give you more flexibility in your construction, and more fate based on the gameplay.
That's all to say that I'm excited for the role cards! And I think they'll more flavor to the environment.

Sure - there is a filter of "who could make it" that can eliminate potentially skilled players from taking the title.  There is also the fact that going to these events is part of what makes a world class player.  Being the best at your store, even winning unfavorable match ups often does not make you better if you aren't exposed to the various metas and tactics that abound in the global environment.  The best of the players who can regularly attend major tournaments are typically the best players there are by virtue of having the most experience playing against the best players.
This is why programs like gempukku and octgn are important even if not officially endorsed.  They allow players seeking experience to play with a larger pool of players.  imo - competitive card games need to start releasing a mirrored digital version that they make and sanction to facilitate more skilled play, more regular large events, and reduce the limiting factor of travel from titles like world champion.
It's a pipe dream - but I'd love it if there were an official L5R LCG digital platform for PC that could allow me to play any deck against any player online at any time.

I mean the Hatamoto is not picked randomly.  If they are paying to travel, practicing to get good, staying loyal to a clan and winning in the tournaments I think that's a pretty good way to pick representatives for the clan.  That all seems like a great gauge to figure out whether someone is invested in the game.
That said it seems like even at the regional level events they will be assigning Hatamoto in some way and they rarely require travel out of state for most areas in the USA.  So it seems entirely possible for you to be a local player only and still be awarded the title.  Not sure how it's gonna be in other countries.

3 fate for a double cycling 2/2/2 seems really good, and likely to get more valuable as the conflict card pool grows. Congrats Scorpion players!

Tournament results that have an immediate impact on the metagame besides providing more netdecks are a fascinating idea.  I'm excited to see how it pans out, especially because the same role cannot be selected by the same Clan twice in succession.  Maybe Scorpion with Keeper of Fire is the best deck out there but in a few months it will literally be unplayable without bans or errata.  Then the deck evolves or gets put on the shelf until the role is available again.  Sounds like a good shake-up!

If you are a truly competitive player first and care little for clan loyalty you'll just pick the clan you though got the best situation after the Role selection.  It's pretty much just another version of what competitive players already do as the card pool evolves each time a pack is released each month.
This system is really about promoting both clan loyalty and community leaders for people who care about those things.  It give those type of players something tangible in the game to fight for when they go to tournaments besides alt art cards and pins.  How well it will work is of course yet to be seen.  I'm optimistic.  This is certainly the most elaborate OP system FFG has ever devised so we can't accuse them of not getting behind there game here

Only the top in clans get to choose - if you want to choose early (to either pick optimally or troll) you would need to be champion or very close to it...  You need to win a lot.  If you don't win a lot you either risk having the choice of roles reduced preventing you from the optimal or troll picks, or another player simply placing higher in your clan stopping you all together.  You'll have to be a world class player to become Hatamoto and make this choice for the clans for better or worse.
I really wonder why people are afraid that a Hatamoto will pick badly considering these players likely have a deeper understanding of the game, hense their placement, and thus pick better for the meta weather through optimal clan match or meta hate-draft style.  I would only be concerned this first time as no one has much experience in the game, so the Hatamoto of every clan may not be dedicated or experienced, but simply place well because it is a new game...  But we'll see.
You certainly can do this in casual games - but for sanctioned events you'll need to go with the role the clan gets.  The exclusionary nature of the roles (each role can only be chosen by 1 clan) is important to ensure diversity and a meta choice between optimal match for clan and hate-draft.

I agree with this to some extent, but, insinuating that it will be easy to troll a clan to mess with their competitive viabilty is out of line.

Not by playing in the clan, claiming the title of Hatamoto just to pick a "bad role" no, but I do think the 1-3rd place clans will face a very real decision between a self-boosting optimal pick vs a meta hate-draft pick...  but this is good and working as intended.
Do Phoenix pick void just to use the 2nd void province?  Or do they pick Earth to block Crab from using 2 of those...

Can we all take a step back here.  I mean we should probably realize that this meta that is supposedly being upset by the role cards, literally has not formed yet.  No one outside of FFG has played a game with all of the cards of available to them.
So maybe lets see how things play out in the real world before we condemn or praise that one clan has access to a card that another does not.

They did mention that the unclaimed roles will still be used in some fashion.
Personally I only see this as a good thing.  It adds great flavor to the game and gives players a clear direction towards what is at stake for them and their clan.......heck you could see players try to sabatoge a clan by gaing hatamoto status, and picking a poor choice for the clan for that year, if there is not a story prize they really care about, so they can then switch clans to try and regain hatamoto status with another clan for the following year and hope there is a prize they want more.
The potential story ramifications from such a move would have to be pretty epic and take a really good player.
It's hard mode people.  Embrace it and enjoy the feeling of acomplishing something difficult instead of having it handed to you.

This thread is literally the first time I have seen anyone upset about the role cards.  Everything I have read everywhere has been enthusiastically supportive.  As am I.
It isn't restrictive.  They have NO penalty associated with them.  If you decide you don't want to do anything with your designated role, there is nothing forcing you to use the additional influence, or to include the second province.
It lets the meta change each year by tweaking everyone's deck.
It gets everyone very invested in how worlds shapes up.
I am very confused by your hate.

Good thing FFG was not trying to appease hardcore deckbuilders and competitive players.
It's there to promote clan loyalty and to challenge competitive players.  Do you want your clan to be Seeker of the Void to prevent Phoenix from grabbing it? If the answer is yes, then make your best deck with your clan, get good, and do something about it.
Gone are the days where AEG tried to appeal to everyone and ultimately hurt their own game.  FFG is making it very clear that competitive advantages will have to be earned through good play, not bought through having special cards that are limited to a small few or directed by the whinings of small groups of players.
I love everything about it except for the fact that it wasn't like this before.  When I was young and single I would have made a serious attempt at becoming Hatamoto or going to gen con and worlds, etc. With a wife and two kids it leaves me less time to play. If I have to play more casually than I would like, roles don't impact me in the slightest.  If I want to be more competitive well I suppose I'll just have to follow this sage advice from The Rock:
"Know your roll and shut your mouth"

Its good to be concerned about these, but every clan will have them - so every player will have them.  This means both players can play around this mechanic equally.  Any ring can be chosen, so if you're concerned about your opponent having the extra fate right now you may choose a different ring, but that is a layer to the tactics.

So much complaint over having to use a single role card.

Meanwhile stronghold cards are totally cool. Never mind being forced to select cards from a pool limited by what clan you play.
