Nobody should be afraid to comment on the actions of FFG due to fear of losing access. If that is the lesson they are learning here, that would be a pity.  We're not punishing them.  We're simply saying that this could have been handled better.  I'm guessing they'll use this feedback and do better in the future when engaging with customers/fans directly, which is kind of the whole point.

Why are people whiny/negative on the Internet?
It's the internet. And they're people.
Why the strong feelings for the game?
Well, each person above has given their specific and personal take. I, like Tetsuro got into this game young and worked on it. To be specific, I started the year after it came out, picked up the RPG immediately, and have played both with fervor ever since.
In 2002-3ish, at merely 20-21, I was able to work on the 2d Edition RPG with Rich Wulf and Shawn Carman et al.
Later, I was able to do more work on a great number of the 4th Edition RPG books under Shawn and Rob Hobart alongside other beautiful Story Team members like Robert "Spooky" Denton, Maxime Lemaire, Mari Anne Murdock, and Fred Wan.
I got onto the Story Team the year, the very year, before it died. It was a dream that the 13 year old version of myself would have lost all bodily control of himself just thinking about. I got to affect the game behind the scenes and then...poof. Just like that. Gone.
But honestly, all that aside, this game has generated some of the greatest fans across ANY game. Players have given me cards for free to start me off. They've schooled me, taught me, bought me beers, and become deep, ever-lasting friends that let you crash on the floor of their house (looking at you Sparks). The fanbase of this game has been driven in part by the "win a tournament and you get to affect the story" aspect that drew so many into L5R from the word go. You only have to look at the ridiculous bounties (Ex: Martino's $1000 bounty at the last GenCon) to know how deeply they care.
This game, its people, and everything about it, is beautiful.
I hope Fantasy Flight is able to continue that, but I'm not worried because it will not all be on them. Many shoulders will be available.

Some of the anguish comes from fans of factions (not just those that aren't in the FFG launch like the Spider or Mantis) that have, for a number of years, been nudging their factions in certain directions, making new alliances and developing new bits of cool lore- and none of that matters now. Yes, it's grognard stuff, but people forget that the first "grognards" were the friggin' old guard in Napoleon's army- the grumbling is born of having put time in- and some of them/us just have trouble with expression- for example, I would call myself "cautiously optimistic." But if everyone around me is clapping their hands with glee, the caution is going to be noted more than the optimism. I had a setting and a timeline that I basically liked*, and now we're going back to an era that not only was I not really part of- I wasn't that fond of the story. For me, the Pre-Coup and Clan War era (which is, for the uninitiated, how we old sorts are going to refer to things until we get wheeled off into a home) was Not My L5R. It was that weird period that set up things that came later that I vastly preferred. I sincerely hope that FFG's changes aren't just some character replacements, name tag swaps, and role exchanges within the same narrative framework, and that they actually do something new.
And of course, some of it's just People On The Internet.

*With the caveat that there was some stupid, STUPID crap in the canon- but part of my caution is that FFG has defaulted back to the period that GAVE us no small amount of that stupid crap.

I think one of the things about L5R that engendered so much involvement on the part of players was how the games actually played out.  I don't think I've ever played another card game where I could feel the effects of my tactical/strategic decisions so acutely.  To me it really felt like an environment where skill in playing the deck, and forward thinking made more of a difference that just 'who had the better/rarer cards'.  And I think that, combined with the sense of ownership players would get from seeing story line prizes for their clans pop up in fictions, was easy latch onto.  Add to that the expansive history of fictions, multiple win conditions, and friendly fanbase among other things and it's kind of hard not to get invested!

Of course, alternate realities are canon in L5R, through the Realm of Dreams.
The 1,000 years of Darkness expansion was explicitly an alternate reality, and then the KYD Daidoji Uji turned up in the main setting.  This is just another dream world, or maybe the previous one was the dream.
Most amusingly, even Rokugan 2000 is hinted to be deeply in the dream canon

I would go the other way.  As of right now I'm the least excited for Fate - but hoping that I come around to it.  I think I'm most excited for the way that the rings are being implemented with the conflicts.  I think that will make for some very interesting gameplay decisions, and a more balanced meta.

I'm excited about playing an L5R game for the first time, does that count?
In all seriousness though, I really like how combat looks. There's a lot of tension between deciding where to commit your resources as well as the decision of when to try and break a province as opposed to just trying to win a ring effect and on the flip side, do you defend with enough to win the battle, or just to protect your province?

I'm not thrilled with having characters on a timer. I hope you'll be able to reshuffle your discard pile into a new Deck if you run out of Dynasty cards.
I like that you'll have to plan for both politics and the military. Hopefully we'll get some nice Yasuki cards.
I'm intrigued by the strategy that'll go into bidding on draw size.
The new timeline is actually pre-Scorpion Clan Coup. The reboot is disappointing, but not really surprising. And it'll be nice to be with the new story from the beginning.

I would like to see that.  I know one of the knocks on L5R was 'too many useless keywords!', but I think it would be cool if there was note included that a personality was Crab/Tortoise.  For me that was something that I found really interesting when I was getting into the game.  All the keywords hinted at a depth a backstory that I didn't know was there until those keywords prompted me to do some digging.

Personally, I have always preferred tournaments with just one deck, no modifications.  When changes are allowed in a tourney it just seems to cheapen the competition to me for some reason.  I feel like the deck building aspect is lost a little bit.  It's easy to build a deck specifically to counter one particular type of deck (Elite Orks from Kempy's example, or maybe a Mantis Ranged Attack deck) if you know you're coming up against that.  It's a lot harder to build an efficient, strong deck for anything you might come up against within the meta, and that is what I think should be winning tournaments.  I know the counter argument to that is 'you could change your deck too', but this is just my preference that a well built overall deck should win out over a deck designed for that one match.

Old L5R had factions that would become dominant or at least much stronger after a certain set was released, even when each clan received the same number of cards in a set. While that could be disappointing for people not playing those clans, it was part of the CCG beast. At any given time some decks / factions / victory conditions are just going to be better than others.
Usually each expansion did focus a bit on a few factions more than others. Correct me if I'm wrong, but for much of L5R's life I think each expansion would give three clans new strongholds, often with cards focused on the new stronghold themes. Sometimes that would propel a clan to be competitive at tournaments, though odds were just as good that the new stronghold and its associated cards would be crap. After each new set was released we'd go on forums and complain about how design clearly had it out for our clan in particular, and obviously were biased toward whatever clans we didn't play, but that was the nature of things.  I doubt the LCG will be much different, both in terms of imbalance between factions and forum complaining.
I anticipate the complaining threads to show up promptly on April 19th, depending on how much info they give us about gameplay and cards.
