I think your assumption about what high numbers on the dial mean is wrong. The simple answer is that by dialing above a 1 on the dial, you are cheating (at the duel). The higher the dial the more dishonorably you're willing to fight. A true contest of skill vs. skill would be both players dialing 1 and letting their natural talent speak for itself.
Similarly, with the cards draw, your conflict deck is all the surprises and tricks you're willing to use. An honorable player doesn't need to use secret tricks, so they draw 1 a turn. Their strength is on the board, in public for all to see. The more you draw the more dishonorably you're willing to act to win.
In our admittedly narrow knowledge of the dial so far, it seems every time you dial a high number your risk dishonor - therefore high numbers on the dial mean a willingness to act dishonorably.

    Toshimo's Unicorn Summary
The Ki-Rin Clan was tasked with exploring the lands outside the empire. They came back 800 years later as the Unicorn Clan. They arrived by charging through the Shadowlands on their fancy super horsies (compared the donkeys available in the empire) and making the poor Crab defenders at the wall wet themselves in terror. It was all very funny. The Crane remembered a treaty they made with the Ki-Rin and so the Unicorn were accepted and fully recognized without question.
In addition to our amazing Shinjo Steeds, we brought with us amazing technology such as forks and yurts. These items quickly became popular in the whole of Rokugani society. As a carnivorous people, we also carry jerky with us in case we need a snack on the plains. Dead flesh is so delicious. I have some right here if you wish to... No?
Since we are the authority on foreigners, the Unicorn quickly opened trade with the outside world and became fabulously wealthy. We trade in spices, diamonds, textiles, and more that are very popular with our traditional cousins looking for adventure. Because we are adventure. We are quick to adapt to any way the wind blows.

Shinjo - The ruling family of the Unicorn. Mostly warriors. This one has no need of kimono and will kill you if you stare too long.
Ide - These guys are trained to understand traditional customs. They talk for us. Thank the Kami that I don't have to... wait.
Utaku - The ladies are called Shiotome and will charge into battle without making a sound and then they will stab you while you stand there with your mouth agape. Beautiful and scary. The men tend the stables.
Iuchi - We are the priests and knowledge keepers. Not scary at all!
    Other:
Moto - These poor bastards all died saving everyone else when we crossed the Shadowlands. Some of them are still out there, I bet, but all twisted by the corruption. Sorry, Crabs.
Horiuchi - This family was *fnord* by Shinjo Yokatsu, right before the Scorpion Clan Coup, who and which *fnord* in the reboot. I've never met any of them. They protect our enormous forest or something? Got eaten by Goblins once, a long time in the future. It was sad, but we quickly didn't care that much.

I actually quite liked the Spider, even though I never played them.  In fact, I was routinely beaten up on by my friend's Spider deck.  And I have to say, Spider players were typically some of the nicest guys to play against, whether it was in a Kotei or just a pick up game.
    Here's one fer the Spider!

    A couple more:
Shadowlands: A wasteland filled with terrible creatures (oni) that want to kill you - influenced by jigoku [Crab protect the empire from the shadowlands]

    Oni: Demonic evil beasts
    Tengoku: L5R heaven
    kami (little k): Elemental Spirits
Kami (big K): Children on the sun and moon, founders of the clans [Shiba, Bayushi, Hantei, Fu Leng, Hida, Shinjo, Akodo, Togashi, Doji]

Nononononononono. You are painting it like if it was Hello Kitty-chan's home. The Shadowlands, with a Festering Pit of Fu Leng connecting Ningendo with Jigoku, is infested with Onis, goblins, undead, bloodspeakers, deadly frakking flora and a long list of other threats. And if that was not enough, and even if you managed to avoid all of the other threats, if you run out of Jade in your journey? Get Shadowlands Taint and a probable place in some Crab legion of damned. If you managed to go back to the wall in one piece (mentally and physically).

Note the Shadowlands came about because Fu Leng missed his landing and threw a tantrum.  And the kami reflect the Shinto-esque belief of a spirit in everything.

I didn't even play the original CCG and I am considering writing a "Design and Rules Implications on Meta and Play" post/borderline article...
Why? Because new LCGs are exciting and because I am really REALLY hoping I finally find a home with a new hobby game not just one time boardgames.

And I agree they should take that feedback in.  It just feels to me like the type of response that doesn't encourage open conversation or access.  It felt more like a torches and pitchforks response rather than a constructive criticism.  That's just my interpretation though, maybe I'm way off. (Happens a lot!)

I think that the context of the comment is important.  This was in the rather informal setting of a reddit AMA.  The whole point was to provide a platform for quick, direct communication and off the cuff responses to questions from the L5R community.  I'm not trying to come down on one side or the other of the debate as far as the pillowfight comment goes.  But I do think that this kind of reaction to a comment on reddit (of all places) would really discourage FFG from giving this kind of access to their designers in the future.  I think it was an amazing thing that FFG did to provide the designers of our favorite game in a forum where we could ask them anything we want in real time.  For me, FFG should be applauded for giving fans of the game that kind of access to designers.  And now it seems like we're punishing them for that.
I think this type of reaction would just encourage them to put out sterile PR speak all the time.  (If anyone here is a football fan - like the New England Patriots response to every question - "We played hard as a team and we're going to work hard in preparing for the next game": repeat for every question.) "We're very excited for the release of L5R and we are looking forward to Gencon.  /  The next L5R expansion will grow the card pool and provide interesting new game interactions."

Back in 2015 "West Point Annual Pillow Fight Turns Bloody, 30 Cadets Injured" due to "cadets swung pillowcases packed with hard objects". Pillow fights are serious business in rl so maybe also in Rokugan. Maybe all of this was a huge misunderstanding due to the faulty explanation of the type of pillow fighting!!!

I've been reading this thread and soaking it all in.  As I didn't play L5R CCG/RPG I was at first a bit worried about the amount of negativity (in percentage terms) going around on the announcement day.  This thread makes me feel a lot better.  Firstly, because it seems a lot of those that had the initial shock are now coming around to at least giving the LCG a chance.  Secondly, because all the negative comments center around the point that the new LCG is different than the CCG.  Not that the LCG is worse, just different.  Which of course makes sense, because you can't judge a game yet based on one announcement, you can just say it's different.
I get it, you were passionate about something and someone is changing that beyond your control, but please be open-minded to the fact that the LCG may in fact be better than the CCG (or at least equal).  We just don't know yet, but I for one am planning on buying three Core Sets as soon as I can.
