I love banzai. I can see why some may not. That said, please give it a chance. It's a lot of fun and literally unites the clans (players) for one brief moment. The l5r community has always been a welcoming place irl. The forums can get heated and sometimes folks explain themselves poorly or react when they should take a step back. Courtesy is a Bushido virtue. Let's not forget that, even as others do. Just because someone's on slips doesn't mean yours should, too.

I like the idea that every card will eventually rotate out.  I like the idea of a "revised core" re-release of older, still legal cards IF they are released as a play-set box, so you don't buy 3x cores.
Also - they should release this now so I don't have to buy 3 cores lol

It's good for many reasons. In addition to those already mentioned, it also makes getting into the game cheaper and easier.

Honestly I was hoping that FFG would utilize the advancing plot structure of L5R's fiction as a method of creating a cycle not only of expansions, but of core sets as well. Ideally the timetable would be several years for each core just so that it doesn't feel like gouging, but I feel like that could create a really cool evolution of clans over time to reflect both the story and mechanical development over time. Perhaps they could have introduced different formats highlighting different time periods that could be drawn from, somewhat similar to how Wizard's does format rotations with MTG. I realize that's mostly wishlisting, but the point is that I would be totally on-board for a core set rotation after several years if for no other reason than to prolong the health of the game while, simultaneously, servicing the theme of Mono no Aware and the plot itself.

I personally don't care for the Banzai chant at all. At Koteis, I would routinely just not participate because, to be quite frank, I found it kind of...stupid.
At Gencon I only participated once I was brought up to the stage on Saturday to lead the chant as Hatamoto. And even then, I still found it a bit...I don't know if cheesy is the right word. But definitely unnecessary.

I wouldn't mind it being eliminated entirely, especially if there's a negative context behind it for a lot of people.

I think the more concerning bit of the article, based on the comments of the article, is the idea of the art being whitewashed and the whole controversy around cultural appropriation. Looking back through the core set, I really only noticed a hand full of cards that look explicitly whitewashed, such as Fearsome Mystic.

It's a shame they put one of the few truly white washed images on the front cover of the game. That really paints a worse picture for the game than, I think, it actually is.

As for Cultural Appropriation, it is certainly a buzz term in today's (or at least America's) culture. It's been drilled into our heads that cultural appropriation is any time anyone (mostly white people) does anything that is related to another race or country's culture, and that it's unequivocally bad.

The thing I feel a lot of people are missing is that adapting and honoring another's culture is not inherently bad. America is essentially built on cultural absorption, after all.

Black people are (generally) not upset that white people are wearing corn rows or braided hair styles. They're upset that they renamed them "boxer braids" and are acting like they discovered this "cool new hairstyle" when various black communities have been doing it for hundreds of years (if not longer). They're annoyed that it's considered a fashion statement for white people but it gets black students in trouble for having extensions in their hair. Oh, but if they wear their hair naturally (Afro style hair) they also get in trouble for having "unprofessional" hair.

They aren't upset that big butts and twerking are trendy now (see Kim Kardashian and Iggy Azalea). They're annoyed that, for decades, having a big butt was considered a bad thing until the white people discovered it, paired with hashtags like #whitegirlsdoitbetter to really drive home that, even when white people do something that minorities have been doing for ages, they still "do it better."

To me, L5R isn't doing anything like this. They are honoring various Asian cultures by combining them into a fictional universe. They aren't trying to pass Asian culture off as white or even trying to absorb it into the white culture. This is what confuses me most. L5R feels, by definition, not to be cultural appropriation, but it's being faulted for it nonetheless just due to the Race issues going on in America.

Maybe I'm naive in saying this - but I think that the intent in the Utz/Banzai chant is pretty relevant to the discussion.  In my experience there is no negativity associated with the chant at all.  It's just some gamers who are excited about their magical samurai fighting.

This isn't the best forum for such a discussion... but I am of the opinion that a person certainly has the right to declare they are offended by anything.  That offense is valid to them, sure...  but that does not qualify it for consideration by any group of people, or validate any demand for action to compensate for the offense.  There is a lot of heated discussions about whether it is the responsibility of society to remove offenses from society to protect people - but that concept is a 1st world problem, and evidence of such privilege that it almost becomes contradictory.
When I hear someone is offended there are 2 things I look for.  Was offense intended?  Was there some direct effect from the offensive action?  If someone intended to mock another person through an impression of their culture then it is clearly a problem.  Likewise if a person used the relics of another person's culture to actually inhibit their freedom as a person, or to ostracize them it is a problem.  If I create a caricature of a culture as part of a piece of art, craft, or other positive thing then that cannot be held to the same standard as an actual racist offense.  It doesn't matter if I am white or asian, whether I am creating caricatures of vikings, or samurai, if there is no offense intended, and no direct negative consequences, then frankly my dear, I don't give a ****.

Pretty much all of the complaining in the comments is from one bigot who seems to have serious hate for all things Japanese because of something that country did over 60 years ago.

I think this thread is giving him far more attention than he deserves.

The discussion on SU&SD isn't meaningful. One guy tries to explain that everything exists within a context and everything can be taken as offensive and the other side interprets everything the worst way possible and tries to belittle and insult people with different opinions, creating a toxic environment.
Sentences like " No, because whiteness dominates the world and doesn't need further protection.", " ... Ah, oh no ... I insulted the European nations! How could I?! Bunch of high-minded states with no concept of how they're exploiting each other, screaming solidarity while letting refugees drown in the Mediterranean. How could I have insulted their high status?" "My wife just told me: Dont be upset, you cant discuss serious issues with children. And there are a lot of children in this threat, that cant take critism on something they like. I learned today that people defend a chant as historiccally necessary for a fictional setting and at the same time, point out, that it has nothing to do with that part of the history." "I could also tell you that technically all white people are racist, whether they are anti-racist or not? (yes, this does include me!) But that'd probably just make you summon absurd concepts like 'reverse racism', which, for you, ist "just racism, too!" or tell me about the tactical futility of such concepts ... and, honestly, I am already super bored by this conversation.", " Jesus Christ, would you **** off to Reddit with this bull already?"
don't make the groundwork for discussing complex topics.

I wouldn't say this on reddit where I'd get downvoted, but here, I'll just put this out here:
I'd rather them strike out with new fiction. I know lore is big for the people coming from the CCG, but as someone who never played, I'd rather they free themselves from all the baggage. Or re-imagine preexisting characters. I don't want to have to dive in to a bunch of old lore to "really" understand cards in the LCG.
