Rimsen reacted to Blail Blerg in Ahh Squadrons! ... just kidding: discussion on light squadron play and the value of strategic
Once a blue moon I try and generate some discussion on something of a strategic bend. I like discussions because you get to see a wide variety of insights/problems.
Recently Rieekan aces and mass Sloane/Rhymer aces have been less popular, although, as we can see from US Nationals, still very effective. They aren't however the premier choice of efficiency and ease anymore however. This opens up the meta to a higher level of diversity, letting a lot of ship-heavy builds come out to play, as we've seen with the BTAvengers MSU and the Ackbar MC80s with squadron counts.  There's also a few variants that have these large ships and medium sized/multirole squadron complement.
In heavy squadron builds, at least one Strategic squadron is generally considered a smart choice.  We can also discuss the merits here of whether 2 or 3 Strat squads are worth it.  At 3 you begin to have the "activate from anywhere" effect of Relay also kick in, though at a hefty cost of 45 points.
In heavy squadron builds, when should you consider 1, 2, and 3 Strategic squads?
How much do you plan to heavily depend on Strategic?  Has it worked?
Light screen builds are also now viable, since its mostly banking on not meeting a Rieekan 5 ship 3 transport BBC Yavaris from **** build. 51-70points.  I will also input from my experience that under 50 points, no matter what, tends to fare extremely poorly vs any build with 100+ squadrons.  Yes, I've heard of people saying its worth it, but from my experience, a good player will simply down both Shara and Tycho or whatever you have within one turn, good dice rolls permitting. However, we now see an advent of medium squadron builds (yet another boon for diversity), instead of just light or 134 mass. These are like the BTAvenger and Ackbar lists with a squadron component as a second damage source. A light 50 ish squadron screen will do okay against something of that sort. You'll also find you can now use that light screen to hamper their strategic squadrons.
I prefer 70 ish for a light screen though.  Its my trauma kicking in, but I do tend to like taking some black dice non-bombers, or Tie Defenders, Shara and Tycho + others, for a robust screen with some utility.  I love also, at 70 points, taking one strategic squad!  One Lambda!  Sometimes two lambdas! The Valen Ciena + 2 Lambdas is really a thing of beauty.  I love this little group. Adding 2 tie Ints or fighters rounds it out to a nice medium sized screen that deals very well with squadrons, but also let's you play Strategic in the case your opponent doesn't really take squadrons. Strategic squads also can force a heavy squad build to split its focus to downing your Strategic squads as opposed to alpha striking your ships.  Also, I find that at 6/8 hp, the Strategic squads are just perfect for staying alive, and delaying, damage soaking to extend the life of my screen to 2-3 turns instead of 1.
They also generally make the game so much more fun!  This is squadron play that has a secondary objective.
What do you all think? Is Valen Ciena 2 Lambdas good for a screen? Since only 2 squads can tie up bombers?  How about Shara Tycho 2 VCX? Should you always add 2 tie fighters?  2 Awings?  Have people gotten use out of adding 2 Zs?
Imo, Strategic is a wonderful game design that truly makes the squadron game more interesting at all levels, light and heavy.  It makes it something more than a pure damage race, which is what the old style of squadrons used to be.
In light screen vs light screen, Strategic use really increases the fun of the game.

By the way, Valen is awesome. He negates counter if he has a buddy.

Also, I love Garel's Honor, but right at this moment if you are taking this game to a tournament, I think Lando on the MC80 is a must. He is the only insurance you habe against that shiny MC80 getting one shotted my an ISD Avenger with Boarding Troopers.
ECM does nothing to stop that, and as someone who has gotten an mc80 one shotted in such a way, I figured I should mention it.

Doesnt meat Motti or Vader, but Jerjerrod is a great commander when you are learning to navigate ISDs especially. This fleet is great as everything has training wheels. The upgrades on the ISD are simple and straight forward for pushing damage, and it also includes some squad effects you can learn that are important for Imperials- relay and Jendon.
All in all its a simple fleet to pick up and start, but something that has a high ceiling as you learn to really leverage all the individual pieces together.

I've definitely got some experience with the MSU archetype, but it's just one of many competitive archetypes in the game - I wish to make that clear to anyone who is new that it's not the only competitive way to play. @Tokra and @Green Knight pretty much covered the basics already. @geek19 and I have some articles planned on how to deal with common problem fleets and the one on handling swarm/MSU fleets is on my plate because I know what I hate having to deal with when I'm running MSU.

And yes, my recommendation for newer folks is to check out the blog. There's a lot of information there. Check out the Welcome/Armada 101 and Armada Basics tabs for starters and then just kind of explore from there.

    1 Soontir Fel (18 points)
    1 Zertik Strom ( 15 points)

    Notes and Thoughts:
I decided not to change the Flagship.  I went with the Reinforced Blast Doors, and I am loving the upgrade.  The number of times that I have been able to Blast Doors away a near death is worth every single point that I paid for it.
I did take the Blast Doors off of Arquitens number 2 because without anything important,  it doesn't make sense to put the Retrofit on.  I saved the points for Chiraneau.
Demolisher with ACM's and JerJerrod does crazy amounts of Damage and is SUPER manueverable.  I've been able to triple-tap Victory's, Assault Frigates, MC80's (luckily) and do heavy amounts of damage, or outright kill them.  It is the hammer to the anvil of the Arquitens.
I decided to fly Admiral Chiraneau on the Gozanti, and fly the two with the Squad Blob.  Between the Mithel / Chiraneau combo and Black Flak from the Gozanti's combined with the potent ace's, I hardly have any problems taking down other squad blobs, or at least keeping them pinned down until the end of the game.
For the Squads: I took Jonus out, and replaced him with Soontir Fel.  With the Two Advanced Aces and Fel / Mithel, I can deal a lot of Auto Damage to things like Biggs Blobs.  Between the Mithel Damage and Fel damage, its pretty potent.  Morna Kee has also single handedly won games for me.  Three damage from a squad on a ship hurts so, so much.  Her and Stele are crazy good.

    Fleets I've Flown Against:
-6 Activation Admonition.  (MC30, CR90's, Salvation, Pelta w/Entrapment Formation, Flotilla, Z95's)  I won this game by easily killing squads, then using my squads to help chip away at ships.  Salvation with TRC's hurts very badly.  But because of JerJerrod's ridiculously awesome manueverability enhancements, I was able to fly circles around him, and I won 8-3.
    - Ackbar Doom Pickle (3 Flotillas + TRC90 and 100pts of Squads with Strategic)  Won 7-4 by Purposefully picking 2nd and forcing him to play my missions (all tokenless) so he couldn't farm free points.  In this game, JerJerrod really shined in enabling me to fly into the weak arcs of the doom pickle and pin it in place using rams.
    - Imperial Generic Squad Blob (Flight Controllers plus tons of Generics and Bombers)  I won 6-5 by holding his squads in place (before I switched to Fel) and took out his VSDI carrier to come out with the win.
-Madine Liberty (LMC80, Admonition, 2 Flotillas, 2 Awing Aces, 2 Xwings + Rogue Squad).  My squads ripped through his squads pretty easily, and I destroyed his LMC80, then took down Admonition by feinting to the right, and hard turning left with JerJerrod.  I lost both of my flotillas, and a few squads, but it was like 80 ish points.  I cruised to a 9-2 win.
-Double JerJerrod Victorys (VSDIIs with a Quasar + Flotilla and a Light TIE Fighter Cover).  I took first player in this matchup as well, and JerJerrod again really showed why he is so awesome on Arquitens, by allowing me to continually skirt the long range of the VSD's.   I did have to eat the Disposable Capacitors, but thankfully, the damage wasn't enough to permanently cripple the Arquitens.  The Demolisher trucked a Victory in a ridiculous JJ enabled manuever, and I was able to KO the Quasar and Squads as well.  I only lost Darth Vader in the game, but my opponent won Intel Sweep.  I won 8-3.
-Ackbar Conga Line (Doom Pickle with Home One + 2 AFB, Flotilla, No Squads)  I took first player, but both my opponent and I both recognized that I misplayed this game pretty badly.  JerJerrod is amazing though, and the Blast Doors + JerJerrod allowed my Flagship to escape with no hull damage.  His lack of squads let me use my squads to attack his AFB + Doom Pickle and Significantly Damage their shields.  Demolisher then came in (thanks to the magic of Jerjerrod) and was able to triple tap a Frigate and stay in the weak arc of the Pickle long enough to chip it's shields away.  From the Squads, I learned that Morna Kee is an absolute beast against ships, and I really don't feel like leaving home without her anymore.  I had to trade the Demolisher and cheap Arquitens, but I won 7-4.
    ---------------------------------------------------
I've been winning pretty consistently after I made the changes.  I am looking for people to suggest fleet Archetypes that might be difficult for me to take down, so I can fly my fleet against it.

    Thanks for reading!

I didn't find any good source. But i can (maybe) explain it in a few short sentenses:

    First tactic:
One fleet tactic is to have the last activation in one turn and the first activation in the next turn. This way you can use a ship that can deal a lot of damage as last activation to bring it in position (even to attack with two arcs) and activate it as first ship in the next turn. This way you can bring a ship into firing range and have a free attack in the following turn with no way for the opponent to react. And might even be able to get out of the firing arc of the opponent, so he cannot fire back this way.
But if you want to abuse this, you need at least 7 ship activations. 6 might work but to be sure you need 7.  And on top of this you will need a good ini bid (use a low fleet total) because you have to be first player. A bid of 20+ points it not unusal for this lists (using 380 points instead of 400).
These Fleets used normaly a small ship for this (Gladiator with Demolisher titel or MC30). With lots of upgrades to increase the damage (really common these days is Avenger + Boarding Troopers). And other small ships to fill up the activations.
But these small ships were replaced by big ships in a few lists. MC80 Liberty Battle or ISD were used for this. But to keep these 7 activations and the high ini bid, that you need, you will have to fill up the fleet with flotillas. Small ships are to expensive for it. And this is why you might see some lists with 1 MC80 Battle Cruiser and 6 Transports that are around 380 points. Or one ISD with 4-5 Gozanti and maybe another combat ship. Imperials fleets have more problems to get the 7 activations, because the Gozanti is more expensive than the Transport. This means the rebels have it easier to get the 7 activations.

    Second tactics:
If you have more activations, you can buy yourself some time untill you have to activate the important ships. This gives you more options and targets to choose. And maybe some opponents have to fly already into your range, so you can attack them. If you have only a fleet of 2 ships, you have to activate these really early and your opponent can react to this move, and try to get out of the way (avoide the front from an ISD). But if you have a few flotilla, and can buy yourself some time, you might be able to react to some movement and get your ships back on a target.
The main intention of this is not to have the last and first but to have some options and targets. And not stand there without being able to attack anything at all.

Squadron games is tricky, but as much as I love warships, you can't defend them effectively from bombers by just flakking. You need at least a minimal fighter screem, not to beat them, but delay them for 1-2 rounds. It can be the difference between a lost Star Destroyer or a damaged one.
Rebels are a bit easier, since they are more well rounded, but 6 TIE fighters can be very effective, and gives you 3 deployment for only 48 points.

There are several ways to use the Flottilas.
They are cheap. So you can use these to "buy" ship activations (this is a tactical decision, and not really easy to understand for someone who just started to play). This alone can fill a whole thread. Just this one. Sometimes a big number of ships is useful for a tactic. And you can buy these ships with the Flotillas.  Flotillas have, with their squadron value of 2, the cheapest way to activate squadrons. If you have a heavy Squadron list, they are good for these kind of lists. Only the Flotilla has the Fleet Support slot. And these are really good, for specific fleets. The Comms Net and Bomber Command Center are really strong. And even a Slicer Tool can be useful at the right time. For a few missions these Flotilla are a good pick as objective ship. If you are playing Most Wanted you want a cheap ship as the target. And these Flotilla deny the opponent the points, because they can only get 18 or 23 from it. A Flotilla might look fragile. But the Scatter is a really strong defense token. It can negate a full attack and this means no damage. This is the same as an evade that can negate all dice and work on all ranges.
On long range the opponent will need really a lot of red dice or a special setup to deal any damage to it. And there are even some ships that can do nearly nothing against the scatter. A black die cannot roll an accuracy. So, for example, a demolisher (Gladiator) will have some big problems to deal any damage to a flotilla.

Acclamator is also a possibility, we saw it in Empire at War and some comics still beeing in imperial service and for the rebels theres still plenty of choices from the OT and EU. Brahatok Flotillas, the Assault Frigate MK I, and the Mc40 would be a great aquivalent to the quasar so that rebels have a dedicated carrier too... We are not yet THAT desperate for new ships in armada that we have to put those stupid carbon copy ships from the new movies in the game.

Thrawn generally good with ships that want to do more things at once. I say an ISD an Arquittens and a Gladiator is formidable, all navigating with Thrawn, while giving Conc. Fire (Kitten and GSD) and Squadron (ISD) commands. Add a Gozanti, some fighters and you have a decent fleet.
For building both Imperials, I don't think it can be cheap... I'd would buy ISD for both of you, Gozantis and Imp-I fighter packs also then anything else to support them you find appealing.
