Matt Skywalker got a reaction from whafrog in Player doesn't like Obligation sessions
What I do is not make the obligation session all about the obligation. I make the session involve the obligation. So if I have a bank heist and a criminal obligation is triggered, then I just have the cops hear that the player is nearby and add more security to the bank.

Matt Skywalker reacted to 2P51 in Player doesn't like Obligation sessions
I think the trick with Obligation is just because it may be a single player's, doesn't mean there can't be something in it for everyone. Plus, I typically ditch individual Obligation as fast as I can and simply have the players accrue group Obligation. That's more to help me in keeping things moving in the direction I want for the story, as opposed to a player not liking it.
Close family member or not, refusing to articulate why leaves you with 2 options. 1. Develop telepathy. 2. Address it when they actually tell you why. I personally wouldn't waste my time trying to make someone happy who isn't telling me precisely why they are unhappy. Unless it's my grandson, he's 3, and still pees himself a little, so he gets a pass.....

Wow. So he's a wallflower that gets jealous of the spotlight? Everybody's different
I had a player that I was having trouble engaging—other players had written up backstories and freely embellished on them in-session to help direct the narrative (For example, "Oh, it just so happens that my wife and kids live nearby, and they haven't seen me for a few years since I packed up to go and find my fortune"). This non-engaging player had a pretty uninspired backstory, and so I created a basic NPC and told him outside of game time, "You have this friend that does this thing here in the city. Could you please tell me his or her name, species, give me a description of what they look like, and tell me how you met?" And the player came through: he retrofitted his backstory a little bit to accommodate this new character, gave her a complete description, and even told me what weapons she liked using
I hope you find a good way of motivating this player! And perhaps others here will have better suggestions than I.

Matt Skywalker reacted to Decorus in What is going on with Unlimited Power?
Its actually a secret plot by me to keep people from being able to buy the books at release so I can get them easier.
My merry band of mercenaries make it difficult to deliver them. Right now I have Unlimited Power stashed in an undisclosed location that is not a beached tugboat on the French coast.

Matt Skywalker reacted to dumbo3k in Crit injuries and setback dice
I don't think many people understand just how lethal or non-lethal this game can be. Many players, myself included, struggled when coming from a d20 system, where you were basically dead if you lost all your hitpoints. So when I first went over my WT I thought I was dead, or soon to be, but then I got back up, with only a lingering critical injury. I started to feel somewhat invincible. Sure I could get knocked out, but I was unlikely to die. This lasted until I received a further 4 crits and had spent more time just reading the crit table to understand it, and seeing death as an option, and that each crit was adding +10 to the roll. You can be certain I rushed to find some medical care, as I realized each critical injury was bringing me closer and closer to a cliff I'd never be able to come back from.

And then your Gm throws a nemesis with a disrupted rifle and you get one shotted, oh and don't get me started on an NPC who duel wields lightsabers, one with a fully upgraded kimber stone and the other a fully upgraded krayt dragon pearl. That stuff is nasty.

Matt Skywalker reacted to themensch in Encounter interactions cards
I like where you're going with this. I have seen a lot of discussion around "set pieces" that are a framework for locations, generic enough to fit most situations with a little on-the-fly descriptions. This falls closer to one of those "101 plots" style lists, just a little more immediate. These could be cool tools for a GM looking for a quick resolution to rolled Threats, or used to build encounters in prep.
Since you're asking for more cards, I'll throw out some ideas:

Matt Skywalker reacted to awayputurwpn in Playing a Female as a male
Forget about the voice. Focus on motivations—what does she want, and what is she willing to do to get it? That is the formative question you should be asking for every NPC your group of PCs interacts with.
After figuring out what she wants, then you can think about affectations and personality. Is she soft-spoken? Is she refined? Is she gruff, ill-mannered? Preoccupied, or inattentive? Matter-of-fact to the point of rudeness? Is she pompous and narcissistic? Is she kind and compassionate?
Don't try and make your voice go higher and talk like a girl. Just worry about what she's like as a person and try to get that across to your players.
-
Matt Skywalker reacted to SavageBob in Playing a Female as a male
What do you mean by "voicing a female?" I don't think a male player should feel obligated to affect a female voice when talking for his female character (in fact, I'd discourage it, since it will probably lead to too much joking around the table). If you mean the ethics of a male player playing a female character, I think it totally comes down to the maturity of the player and his motives for doing so. Is the motive to get a thrill by putting the female PC into suggestive situations? Well, not at my table, but if you allow that kind of thing, it's probably best to make sure the other players are OK with it. Is the motive to challenge the player to get into the head of someone of a different gender from himself? I wouldn't have a problem with that.

They did compensate. Wookiees start out with the ability to withstand 30% more physical damage than a human before losing consciousness, and 50% higher base Soak before they even suffer damage.

Matt Skywalker reacted to ErikModi in Some questions
Well, that didn't go entirely as expected. They got the Sith down to two wounds left before he managed to pull out a victory (I didn't have him use his Magnitude upgrade for Bind initially, because that would have decided the fight then and there).
It's amazing to me that, in this system, a character built on 1800 XP, with three Adversary talents, could actually be beaten by three characters at 450 XP and one GMPC at almost 900 (who was Bind immobilized for almost all of the fight, though one character's quick thinking to drag him out of Bind range got him back in).
But the players had a lot of fun and enjoyed the challenge, and the Jedi PC actually managed to disarm him twice on Triumph rolls.
And I swear I had another question I was looking to have answered that cropped up in this session, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Oh, well.

Matt Skywalker reacted to ErikModi in Some questions
Well, the point is for them to get wiped. . . this time. The PCs are on the verge of hitting full Jedi Knight level (500 earned XP by my rules-of-thumb) and I kind of want to end this phase of the adventure with a bang, as well as make their overall nemeses more dangerous (once the revived Sith and his daughters link up with the previously-established bad guys). The Sith in question ended up being built on about 2k XP (which is about where I have my Jedi Council Members), so that works for me narratively. The great thing about this system is I can utterly defeat the PCs, and unless I choose to activate a crit and get a 150+ roll, they aren't dead, so defeat does not mean "roll up a new character." I want to showcase that here, and let the players know that I'm shortly going to stop pulling punches, and if they want to triumph they'll have to work for it a bit harder than they have so far.
To make up for it, the next two sessions are the Jedi PC taking my version of Jedi Knight trials, then building her own lightsaber, then the third session I intend for the players to take part in a Battle of Hoth type setpiece. . . but on the Empire's side.
(Homebrew setting, I won't rehash the details yet again unless people are really interested).

Matt Skywalker reacted to SEApocalypse in Some questions
The suggestion to give nemesis characters two init slots is mainly for the reason that GMs often stick them into situation when they go alone against multiple PCs in which case the group has multiple actions per round and the nemesis is just boned.

Beware the Fallen Master [Nemesis] from page 412 in the core rule book. I used him and a Fallen Apprentice [Rival] in an encounter vs a knight level party with 1 light-saber wielder. He had the Move and Enhance Force powers and Rav Naaran's Wrack from Lure of the Lost module download. A lightsaber skill of 4 plus his brawn led to me rolling a double triumph late in the fight which turned the tide against my PCs.
Best thing I can think of is that it is often better to use Stun damage against a powerful adversary -- especially one who may be suffering strain to activate his own abilities as with Parry and Reflect.

I say Kudos for rewarding the player and keeping things gong. Once suggestion I have is you could have them flip a destiny point to do it as a manuever.

Matt Skywalker reacted to Donovan Morningfire in Some questions
You can mainly find it in the F&D core rulebook as a sidebar at the end of the Build-an-Inquisitor section of the Adversary chapter.
Fair warning that this option can make your Sith Lord Nemesis into a true beast in combat, especially if they opt to make two lightsaber attacks that round as well as having one (or both) of Improved Parry and Improved Reflect.

Matt Skywalker reacted to Darzil in Some questions
1. Yes, by RAW it takes an action, and without duration upgrades lasts only one round (I should take the duration upgrade on my force user!). The talent "The Force is my ally" allows using a Force power as a manouver for 2 strain, once per session. Of course, you could rule that Farsight normally takes a Manouver, as it isn't as dangerously high power as some others. If you do I'd suggest still only allowing use of one Force power per turn.
2. GM call. I'd probably say no.
3. Yes, though as a Sith lord Nemesis you can also give them the ability to take two initiative slots per round, one as normal position in round, one at the end. His ranks in Adversary will help generate Improved Reflect and Parry direct attacks back, but Sense upgrades would also work, as would any stance that upgrades attack difficulty (Side Step, Defensive Stance), or any equipment that had Deflection or Defensive.
4. Basic power would only affect combined force power checks where a skill check is involved.
-
Matt Skywalker reacted to HappyDaze in Overcoming invisibility
An adversary with Bad Motivator will do it. The talent doesn't even require the opponent to actually do anything to the stealth field generator.
Despairs rolled while cloaked can also cause disruptions in the field generator or even damage it.
