They were out of stock with FFG before release too. There are copies on Amazon at least for Devil Reef at retail. I don’t know how that affects European shipping.
I believe an unanticipated growth of popularity, is what is happening with AHCG stuff.
Innsmouth was announced last February before Covid hit. When FFG announces a cycle, it has already been finished and I am pretty certain it’s even already been printed or at the very least, the order for printing is in. Then Covid happened and this game became very popular gaining a lot of players. Everything FFG had pre-ordered for printing or was printed pre-Covid, was based on a consumer base that they had not anticipated being as big as it would be, by the time those orders or print runs were being released. Even printers were affected by the shut down in the Spring, so that didn’t help.
War of the Outer Gods was supposed to be released at Gen Con this last summer. I’m sure it was printed pre Covid too.
They have scheduled reprints of all of these things, which sell out pretty quickly too unfortunately. I think retailers are snatching them up.
They told me today, when I called about my orders that they are printing more of the Innsmouth cycle items out of stock.
I’m not sure if L5R has as increased it’s fan base as quickly, so there may not be the supply problems.

I think it's important to keep some things in mind here.
First, competitive play is something the minority of people do. Most people that play card games do so at their kitchen table with friends. While I understand that competitive play is an important component to success of a collectable card game (CCG, LCG or other), the reality is that this is not the format and standard by which the vast majority of players will experience the game.
The second thing is the cost . These games are not sold outside of the US for 15 bucks for a cycle pack for example. In Sweden for example to buy the entire collection it would cost you about 12,000 crowns if you buy it at the cheapest online outlet and that is a reduced priced compared to brick and mortar shops. 12,000 crowns is about 1,200 dollars, a lot in any country.
Finally I think the key issue isn't maintenance cost but getting into it cost. Today if you want to play Legend of the Five Rings, lets assume your cost of 610 dollars. How many people do you know that have 610 dollars to get into a card game? That cost goes up each month and it will be less and less likely as time goes on to get into the game.
And as pointed out, eventually you start running into availability issues as well thanks to the way the game is staggered into cycles, so even if you have 610 dollars, it's unlikely you would be able to find everything.
I get what your saying, but its really now quite that black and white and I think the devil is in the details here and its here where a lot of these games actually do run into trouble.

I think the term "dedicated fan base" is a bit shaky. I mean what is that really? Does a couple of hundred players around the world count as a dedicated fan base? a couple of thousand?
Games are successful when they sell, but they are not necessarily failures if they don't. Runewars did not sell, so it was canceled, but I would argue it was a successful game that just had a very short run. Having a "dedicated fan base" is not easy to achieve and even if that fan base is small, its not to be disregarded. I mean consider Twilight Imperium. Its on its 4th edition and by all accounts they never even printed enough copies of the game in its entire lifetime to qualify it as a economic success. They were making nickles and dimes on their best day on that game, but they made it because although small, the fan base that followed the franchise loved it.
I know some people liked it, whenever any game is canceled there is always a "some people liked it" commentary but Runewars never really had any hope of being an economic success. You had a skeleton people, a people people, elf people and demon people. The only way they could have made it a more generic fantasy game is if they removed all art and wrote "fantasy game" on the cover. The game just didn't have anything special about it, there was no spark. It was rather plain and boring.
Under the covers I agree there was a great mechanic, and I think this is what really helped to build an audience for it but you can't sell a miniature game on the basis of a mechanic.
If Gamesworkshop has showed us anything its that mechanics don't matter at all to the miniature gaming community. Its all about the visual and hobby component of miniature games. I mean Warhammer 40k has always been and always will be complete trash as a game mechanic. I mean, it literally has no redeeming qualities as a strategy game of any kind and anyone who knows anything about gaming and plays 40k knows that. Its just garbage. But the miniatures are amazing, the best in the business by a margin so wide that nothing else is even in the same space time continuum. Simply put, the only reason to play 40k is to paint the miniatures and that is enough to make it one of the longest running and successful miniature games in the history of the genre despite it being a complete failure in every other regard.
The real success stories are games like Warmachine and Horde. They pulled together great mechanics, amazing miniatures, great setting. Its a game that has held up with minimal changes to the mechanic since release and miniatures from 10 years ago are still better than anything modern efforts have managed like those from FFG. Privateer Press may have some questionable business ethics, but they know how to make a game successful. If FFG should model themselves, it should be after what P3 is doing.

Ok. So I can find a similar game with 5 times the components for 5 dollars more? Of course not, because there is a profit margin they need for what they produce. Games that are twice as large usually cost twice as much.
Not to mention the increase in box size, weight for shipping, etc.
And if they were selling expansions, they would be 20 or more. I mean look at the Arkham Horror expansions, even the smaller ones are like 20, and they don't have nearly as many components as doubling it.
And I don't have arkham, but I have Eldritch. Do you know how many people actually have a lot of expansions? Not that many relatively. Because it makes set up a pain. And no one wants to pay 100 dollars that takes forever to set up that only plays for an hour. Which is what this game does.

I'm still not convinced that the Unique Game concept makes any sense at all for a game like this. Ok, so my copy is unique and not quite like anyone else's copy. So? How does that make the game better? How does that improve my actual experience in any way, shape, or form? I just don't see any actual value here for the consumer whatsoever. Clearly there is value for some of you, as you seem to get a personal sense of satisfaction just from the fact that your copy is unique. If that is the case for you, I'm not disparaging that and I'm glad that simply the knowledge that your copy is unique increases the value of the game for you.
But I just don't see it for most people. I did pick up a copy of the game simply because I really like the survival genre in general. But after playing a few scenarios, it's clear to me that the game itself is not enhanced in any way whatsoever by the fact that my copy is unique. It doesn't make my game better. All it does is remove the option of expanding my copy to get more biomes if I wanted to do so.
With Keyforge, sure. I'll be playing my unique deck against other players' unique decks. That has value because you will presumably be playing against other peoples unique decks. But for this game, nobody else in my group is going to buy their own copy of the game, especially because there is a chance they end up with the same 2 biomes I have. I just don't see how this model makes any sense at all.

Both sides of the argument are a bit polarized to my opinion. No, FFG has no obligation to reprint errated cards and give them away. Would it be a nice and consumer friendly practice? Definitively yes, and I don't think we will be many to complain if they did. Will it happen? in a LCG, it's highly unlikely.
Heck They would sell an update pack with the errated cards updated, I would be happy to buy it. As long as it's reasonable and does not become a habit every 2 months

Haha, I appreciate the drinking game idea, and I don't see why you're asking for trouble--it's a fair question.
But I don't think this issue is black and white. There are probably casual players who care and those who don't. Competitive/hardcore players who care and those who don't. I'd say I'm in line with what Rafael is suggesting. I care about the rules, my collection, and the direction of the game, even if I never make it to a sanctioned event. I've put a lot of money into it, storage of it, protection of the cards, etc.
I don't mind criticism, but there's quite a difference in expressing it and raising alternate points, versus attacking someone. But thank you for the apology.
I don't feel that it is about entitlement. It's about consumer protections, something I am passionate about. Here's how I see it: I gave FFG money for a product and they changed their end of the bargain post-transaction without offering any recourse. Further, we are paying the cost for their inability to adequately invest in playtesters. FFG is pushing the boundaries of this with an ever expansive restricted list and errata'd cards in their other games (Star Wars: Destiny that I know of). I don't expect any company to get it right 100% of the time--that's asking the impossible. But I do expect them to correct the issue in a way that puts their customers first, without whom they would not be in business. You don't pay the costs when your vehicle is recalled because of a safety defect.
I don't think reissuing cards with the updated text would really hurt their bottom line, not when they can offer promo cards for ordering the next cycle of cards directly from their website instead of supporting your LGS.
I totally understand that some of you aren't bothered by the changes, and that's okay! I'm not going to try and convince you that you should be. But I am, and if this becomes the norm for this game, I won't be able to keep supporting it. And I think it won't do FFG or the L5R franchise any favors when it comes to getting new players into the game.

While restricting cards certainly becomes necessary to improve design space, we now have cards we purchased that no longer do what they say. Regardless of whether or not you agree with these changes, they have been made in order to maintain a healthy state of the game and that is fact. My main concern is how will FFG follow up on this for the sake of players? In my opinion, in a world where FFG puts the players first, an "errata pack" of fixed cards would be issued for free to whomever requests one, one per person/household/however they want to do it.
But that's my opinion. Given their possible inclusion in a core set 2.0 or deluxe core set re-release, that feels like an option that shows no value in the players as that is essentially forcing us to re-buy cards that for whatever reason made it past playtesting the way they were.
What are your opinions? What do you think the best way to handle this is? Please consider the implications for dedicated, semi-casual, casual players and anyone in-between.

I am 100% not trolling, this was not a joke post, and this is my only account. This is my first LCG and I don't like decisions like this that FFG is making. That's great you can accept it, but if you believe I'm not allowed to find fault in FFG selling us cards and literally changing what they do with not a word of making it right, then I guess that's what allows companies like FFG to make decisions without putting their customers first.
Again, I'm perfectly fine with rebalancing cards for the health of the game. I'm not okay with them leaving out any sort of compensation as part of that process.
The toxicity of some of your responses is definitely enough to put me off of the game. Is this what I should expect if I ever dared go to an official event? I had a pretty cordial discussion about this in the L5R discord, but I guess I should have expected more hostility from those on the FFG forums. Thank you to those who were decent enough not to attack a fellow player of the game we enjoy for raising an issue of concern.

This. So. Much. This. As a casual Netrunner player who did not buy everything there was, it was irritating to find similar comments on netrunnerdb. But with L5R I find the same kind of black and white pronouncement on Discord. It's especially funny when two people speak with the same level certainty but are at complete opposite as to what they claim is the best. I just shrug and move along.
It has to be said, LCGs are hybrid creatures. Built for competitive play, but layered with enough theme, flavor and overall production quality to attract non-competitive gamers. A weird outlier might be Arkham, because it's coop, but that might actually confirm the weird place "PvP" LCGs are at.
I therefore wish the casual gamer would find himself or herself more at home with these kinds of games. To me this means a broader support of related products and variants (such as multiplayer, which was mentioned by someone else).
I've always found idea behind the Terminal Directive box for Netrunner nothing short of awesome. L5R is so well suited for that. Just imagine a story around the fight for Hisu Mori Toride. Or Tadaka's journey to the Crab lands. Or whatever shenanigans we're expecting between Sotorii and Daisetsu. Those story-oriented boxes could come with basic deck themselves, I'd pay the extra for that.

First of all, SUPER HYPED that FFG is finally giving us a Marvel game. Been a long time coming in my opinion...however, is it just me or does this game seem absurdly similar to LOTR LCG? I mean, there are a quite a few differences but it seems really similar. I love playing LOTR LCG but cant FFG get a little bit more creative seeing as LOTR LCG is now ending and it looks like they're just trying to replace it with this other game? IDK that's just my opinion but still looks super amazing! Also can't wait to see what other Marvel games they'll inevitably release

Just a bit of counterpost.
I've played through all 4 story scenarios with a friend, so 2-player setup.
Short summary - we were not impressed. We managed to explore quite a lot in each of the 4 scenarios.
At first it was really nice, the mechanics were simple but engaging and exploration was fun. Really felt super thematic.
The first big negative was how combat actually worked. It is totally random. We failed easy hunts, but managed to defeat almost impossible boss, all due to luck or lack of it.
Second disappointment came during scenario 2, as we explored quite a bit in scenario 1, scenario 2 felt a lot less exciting. Also the story content felt lacking. It is supposed to be scenario driven game, but actually there is very, very little narrative here. The scenario specific content is minimal.
Third scenario, different terrain - Bayou, but actually it played almost the same as Dessert, another disappointment. During this scenario we also started to really feel the repetitiveness of Night cards and Project cards.
We played scenario 4, didn't feel much different from scenarios 3-4. It looked to us that scenarios do no impact overall game flow too much.
Impressions after 4 scenarios:
Negatives:
1. The storyline is very thin. Scenario content is minimal. Considering how short are scenarios, 4 is ridiculously small number.
2. There isn't all that much to discover. There are not many exploration cards. Probably after playing once through all scenarios you will know all the secrets.
3. There is lack of content everywhere - Not enough night/exploration/project cards to provide good replayability.
4. The tiles feel empty - very few landmarks here and there. Most of the spaces are just empty. It even looks like artists didn't know that the tiles will be covered with hex grid. So at time it is very difficult to be sure which type of terrain is on specific hex.
5. Enemies and combat feels very underdeveloped. There is very little variety in terms of enemies, they all behave more or less the same. Combat is very luck driven and boring. I understand that game was meant to light and simple but current combat solution feels just lazy. Also, the art on enemy cards, I know it is specific art style, but to be honest it feels very cheap.
6. Characters - the balance seems to be very off here. Some have some powerful abilities which are in use all the time. Others are lacklustre as their abilities are useful maybe once per game or not at all.
7. Uniqueness - after careful analysis of game structure it looks like it is just semi-random mix of compatible components. It looks like all components offer the same level of complexity and use the same generic mechanics. So, despite different composition I expect each game to play in a same way.
8. Generic - unfortunately that's how the game felt for us. Plain and a bit boring. Good core mechanics, it is a shame nothing has been built on top of them.
9. Price - Looking at the amount of components in the box and amount gameplay content the feeling of overpaying is overwhelming. There aren't many components. Many of the cards are duplicates, the art and flavour text are very sparse. At the same time and for the same price I've bought Arkham Horror 3rd edition and difference in content is quite shocking.
Positives:
1. The first impression of the first scenario was very good, it truly felt like exploration of unknown.
2. The core game mechanics works well, especially for survival themed game. Exploration, gathering and crafting, it all feels right.
3. The characters - the ones with useful abilities feel quite different and can shape experience a bit. Character art is also nice.
Final opinion, quite average, rather plain and boring game. Good foundations for something better, but underdeveloped. Evident lack of content in the box.

I'm not asking for sympathy. To be fair I can see how you could interpret it that way, if you only read half of the post, and ignored the very first sentence. However ill indulge you since that is the part you guys seems to be stuck on. I only put the deck up for sale after I saw multiple people in different keyforge groups say they are willing to pay that much because they are looking for decks that had the certain combo and it is pretty rare.
And Poposhka really... "besides selling cardboard for 40 times the retail cost." Move on with that, it happens in every card game ever.
Anyways, How am I supposed to trust the next deck I like wont get changed and be worthless again? How are we entering the Second Age but yet the main rules are even set? How are they going to run all these giant worldwide tournaments when they themselves can't decide what is right on some of these rulings?

In the old Lore Kaimetsu-Uo, when he left the Crab to find his way, renounced his position with the clan and "severed" official ties with them. Years later a descendant of his named Gusai convinced the Emperor to recognized the Mantis as a distinct entity and they were awarded Minor Clan status, so no they are a separate family and clan from the Crab.
As to the role of the Elemental Dragons they are true divine beings of an equal power to Amaterasu and Onnotangu and represent the fundamental forces of the elements. The blood of the Thunder Dragon along with the Blood of Hida is why Osano-Wo was as powerful as he was and the Mantis (along with some in the Hida family) inherited many of those traits, thus why the Mantis had an affiliation with storm magic. The Celestial court was ruled by the first Emperor and each subsequent Emperor was alleged to reside in the court due to their divine blood.
The Mantis claim to Great clan status is not actually based on Hida's blood it is that during the Clan War the great clans abandoned their responsibilities and that the minor clans were forced to step up and the Mantis demanded (or held the Empire hostage for depending on your point of view) the recognition they had earned and a full place at the table in the aftermath.
Later when the Celestial Dragon purged the Celestial realm of all those who were not either Fortunes or of direct divine blood (they made an exception for Utaku Kamoko who would reside in the heavens as Shinjo's representative since Shinjo had re-incarnated in Rokugan) the Thunder Dragon, who felt Yoritomo was worthy of a place in the heavens, gave a portion of its divine essence to him thus raising Yoritomo to a status equal to that of one of the founding Kami and allowing him to remain in the heavens as the Mantis clans patron Kami.

Well, the Mantis partially derive their claim to legitimacy from being descendants of Hida; more specifically, their clan was founded by Kaimetsu-Uo, the son of Osano-Wo the Fortune of Fire and Thunder, and grandson of the Kami Hida and the Dragon of Thunder.
Arguably, the Dragon of Thunder would render the Crab- and Mantis Clans MORE divine than the other Great Clans, since the Mantis are descended from two Gods, while the others are descended from just one.

The Tortoise Clan belongs to the Imperials. They are there to undertake the jobs that it just wouldn't be seemingly for the other Imperial Families to undertake but also shouldn't be entrusted to any Great Clan that have their own political agendas that would muddy up the waters.
I really don't want to see the Mantis claim them and use that to start snatching up what little territory the Imperial Families have. They should be left entirely in the Imperial Family realm of influence, especially in case the Imperial Families might ever lose the throne and position of authority and need to convert into being just another clan.
The Yasuki are already contested between the Crab and the Crane, though this new canon puts them firmly into Crab clan. Muddying things up by bringing the Mantis into it seems silly.
So while, granted, those families have a lot in common with the Mantis Clan, they just shouldn't be joining it. In fact, the similarities might eventually lead to say... a Mantis/Crab/Owl alliance or possibly the rivalry between the three could erupt into a trade war.
In the previous continuity the Fox Clan was part of the Mantis Great Clan, but honestly they never fit well. The whole Mantis Clan theme is about seafaring, storms, gold and archery-- the Fox could not possibly be thematically further from that. The Fox Clan with their concept of forest dwellers that deal with weird magical spirits gives them more in common with the Falcon and Badger, I could even see more in common with the Sparrow and Hare. And probably the Bat Clan as well, though we don't know what shape it takes in this continuity.
Honestly, even if there were a "Minor Clan Alliance", the Mantis are oddly the ones that have the least common interests and culture with all of the others.
The only Minor Clan that really fits with the Mantis without losing a lot of its core concept is the Wasp, who are known for being grubby mercenary archers without much care for such subjective things like "honor". One could easily imagine the Mantis wealth pulling them into an Alliance that ultimately becomes permanent.
Really though-- the Mantis Clan is supposed to be fairly decent in size already. Rather than incorporate other clans into it, maybe the better route would be to divide the currently nameless clan into different families. So maybe the Mantis Clan military all take on the name of their highest commander, the Mantis Clan merchants take on the name of the richest and most successful merchant, the Mantis Clan shugenja take on the name of the head teacher of their techniques and then maybe the last family could be the Order of Osano-wo.

Just an idea that seems pretty obvious to me about why L5R doesn't get to be a big thing in Japan VS GoT being a big one in Europe. GoT has been created by an Occidental mind. George R R Martin is embedded in the Occidental culture, shares the language and has the right feeling for how everything should sound, look like and react. There is not such big disconnection from American and British culture ( and I say British specifically and not European in general because the way usually Americans depict French, Germans, or Italians for example is ridiculous). So for an European audience, there is nothing odd and getting into the universe is natural, no matter how fictional or how much it's inspired from reality.
Another example of a successful setting despite cultural disconnection that I can give is the 7th Sea RPG, which was sometimes really off the rails when it came to portray the nations of Thea, all largely inspired by diverse European nations. What kept the whole thing together and allowed the game to be successful is that each European country is very different and to the eyes of a french for example, the way the Eisen ( fictional Germany) was depicted was not strikingly odd. Each player group only made fixes in the game lore for his own country and went on full with the rest. This is however not possible with Rokugan as all is mixed up and the great clans are not each specifically inspired by a distinct nation.
L5R has been also created from an occidental point of view and I can only imagine how weird it will look to a Japanese audience. I mentally facepalm each time I see what is supposed to be an European / American character representation in a manga / anime/ Japanese video game. ("Asuka Soryu Langley" supposed to be German in Evangelion... Yeah sure 😝) I can only imagine it will be the same once you try to explain the lore of L5R to a Japanese native speaker. So the whole name issue TheHobgoblyn mentions right here, yeah I totally get it. It would get some interest as an exotic oddity at best.
And when it comes with the mix between Chinese and Japanese culture, I'm honestly not even sure how it would be perceived given the history between those 2 countries (actually if anyone knows, I would be interested to know!) .

Just an idea that seems pretty obvious to me about why L5R doesn't get to be a big thing in Japan VS GoT being a big one in Europe. GoT has been created by an Occidental mind. George R R Martin is embedded in the Occidental culture, shares the language and has the right feeling for how everything should sound, look like and react. There is not such big disconnection from American and British culture ( and I say British specifically and not European in general because the way usually Americans depict French, Germans, or Italians for example is ridiculous). So for an European audience, there is nothing odd and getting into the universe is natural, no matter how fictional or how much it's inspired from reality.
Another example of a successful setting despite cultural disconnection that I can give is the 7th Sea RPG, which was sometimes really off the rails when it came to portray the nations of Thea, all largely inspired by diverse European nations. What kept the whole thing together and allowed the game to be successful is that each European country is very different and to the eyes of a french for example, the way the Eisen ( fictional Germany) was depicted was not strikingly odd.
