Mostly, i guess it depends on what you or your group think is fun.

Keeping items is neat in theory, but also be aware that:
-it can kind of bend a scenario a bit out of shape (at least on a semantic or narrative level, and sometimes on a challenge level) if the game instructs you to spawn an item one investigator already has or a threshold in the scenario logic relies on the player placing an item in some certain place which you were intended to find first or something like that.
-there is no item ratings, so it's hard to come up with rules balancing players from simply picking the best item in the deck or from the last campaign. Items are a big deal when it comes to how difficult or easy a scenario is.

Ultimately, you might want to decide for youself if this campaign style you want to homebrew is a game of survival and/or resource management, or a game of character development, and if the latter, in what ways is the player able to develop their character in an interesting way? Or if the game object is something else, of course.

I don't think the game *needs* a persistent level up mechanism because it wasn't designed to ramp difficulty progressively between scenarios. But either way it's up to you how you want to play the game!

If you want to raise the stakes a bit, how about this:

Begin an easy scenario at first.  If an investigator dies, don't end the game like the rules say. Just strike that investigator out of the pool. If they survive, they survive, and can be reused.

All characters start at "level 1". If they have a good ending on a scenario with a difficulty above their current level, they gain a +1 token to a skill, and increase their "level". If they get a bad ending, yet manage to survive, they start their next campaign with a facedown horror and a facedown injury.

If you complete all scenarios with investigators still in the pool, you've won against the darkness. Until a new scenario is released, that is. Yes, quite the marathon.

    Or something like that.

You could also limit "level ups" to the various elixirs you find in the game.

It's the one that i play the most from ffg and i got started with arkam horror, too. It's different, that's for sure. More elaborately scripted events, more narrative, the scenarios are more mysterious than your average AH game, you need to find stuff out.

Each expansion adds in new map variations and little things to the older scenarios. A common complaint at the launch was that there were too few scenarii at the time, which restricted replay value for many, but that was then. Now, you have a lot of contents to dive into.

    That's my two cents.

btw... What'd be the point of making another AH?

It seems the new restraint token might help ranged weapons come into their right element,  and help investigators evade, ignore and run from monsters or focus on something else briefly

Aelitafrommars got a reaction from hengst2404 in Positive remarks on Vengeful Impulses mechanisms
This week i've finally been able to say all scenarios so far have been played at least once, and to the end, excepting rising tides which took to much time to do in one sitting, so that's still on hold.

One of the scenarios, Vengeful Impulses, presented what i feel is a significant change of gameplay. I hope to see variations on it. Here's why:

Text containts discussion on mechanisms. If you don't want to know anything about it, read this after your first playthrough.
I really like that this scenario dares to experiment with a different clue economy. First, the abundance the players/investigators are likely to build up makes the 'darkness' mechanic shine (if darkness can shine). There you sit with a pile, unable to use it, with narration building a sense of emergency. Great psychological effect. This can be used again, for sure. Moreover, and maybe more importantly, i hope such a clue economy will reappear in tougher scenarios. If any particular scenario would yield plenty of clues, but also make you spend them, the route towards the object of the game would tilt more towards making priorities on when to be relatively certain and when to take a daring risk. The game may become more a game of priorities and less a game of chance (and in contrast to many other scenarios where your strategy, unless you're roleplaying full on,  essentially is to balance taking time getting clues and/or evidence with making fast progress). In short: This economy was a really neat idea! Hope to see it in more contexts where it can show off more of its aspects.

The replayability is better than in most; simply for the fact that the object of the scenario is changed sufficiently by changing around the npcs and culprits (from what i've read). It has a very strong midsomer murders vibe, the occult aside, and i like it. Next time, i'll try to see if there's a different approach to solving the case (pure deduction over super puzzle solving). My super positive review might get a dent if the puzzle is the only sound way to get to the right conclusion.

I really like that the scenario enables you to actively think about the mystery, and mechanics-wise, enable you to take action and consequence on your personal conclusions, if you want to. This scenario is strong in the roleplay, agency, interaction, and immersion departments. I love that stuff and it's a welcome addition.

It actually surprised me VI so far has the lowest average rating on MaelStromUK's game report statistics (though, it's only by a fraction, and they're all rated very high). It was a flawless victory on the first try, but it was meant to be fairly easy, and the ride was enjoyable nontheless.

Definitely agree here. Gender distribution at work in any sort of cultural or entertainment production really helps. As a comparison in quite the same field, Conan raised concerns in this shut up and sit down review for having an excluding effect. There's the argument that the designers wanted to keep the game true to Robert E. Howard's fiction, but then again they did make a choice to part from the very same genuinity when (appropriately) toning down the very dated expressions of racism. My guess as to why is that this is the team.  They may be nice guys, but i think it's fair to say the gender distribution isn't in favour of interpolating different life experiences and biases. The concerns raised made me think what i reacted to in another game by another company (apart from the rules being rather rickety in some spots); Zombicide. Not only are the female zombies running around in panties, the manual have "jokes" of the "wives doesn't understand board games so we tried to make the game simple" variety. That left me less eager to play, but i had already bought it.

I sometimes gig a workshop in Nintendo Entertaintment System graphics and level design for young people. While it's open to anybody, special care is made to encourage girls - they're generally the ones who've found most enjoyment coming up with characters, graphics, maps and original ideas. I think that's so because they're filling up a vacuum of culture this way and create something for themselves when a large part of the computer/video games industry looks another way. This is much like how the punk DIY spirit can be seen as an expression for creating content that wasn't readily available. It's not even so much about some specific gendered content, as it is about being taken seriously, being seen, taking place, and getting targeted by cultural products and expressions.

It has recently been mentioned elsewhere that android users actually need to have an internet connection at app startup to access bought DLC:s...  I love this game, but if this statement is correct, that sounds a bit like they brought together some of the bad aspects of from two different worlds (strategies). Poor android users in the woods.

"In relating the circumstances which have led to my confinement within this refuge for the demented, I am aware that my present position will create a natural doubt of the authenticity of my narrative. It is an unfortunate fact that the bulk of humanity is too limited in its mental vision to weigh with patience and intelligence those isolated phenomena, seen and felt only by a psychologically sensitive few, which lie outside its common experience. Men of broader intellect know that there is no sharp distinction betwixt the real and the unreal; that all things appear as they do only by virtue of the delicate individual physical and mental media through which we are made conscious of them; but the prosaic materialism of the majority condemns as madness the flashes of super-sight which penetrate the common veil of obvious empiricism."

I know! Quite startled by this so quickly.  Had vaguely thought that DLC would have issued forth instead for a short while. Still More maps and more boards - and more cityscape by the looks of it. Arkham does grow in fits and starts.
Personally i'm hoping for the Arctic expansion one day..where we get tiles of nothing but white
