I'm going to a highly important tip:  watch the humidity!  high humidity is murder on clear coat, it can actually cause it to become grainy or even textured.

I know I promised MC85 pics, (still a wip), but I got distracted, and I am really glad I did!

I starting trying out a new method of prepping Versatile Plastic (formerly White Strong and Flexible,) for painting, and I am very happy with the results.
In my last order I picked up Mel's Bellator SSD in VP. While the Model is beautiful, the texture of the material leaves a bit to be desired, being very grainy and powdery. After the standard soap and water bath & air dry, I decided to start with a thin layer of Crystal clear enamel from Rust-oleum, applied in the same manner as a primer. As this seemed to sharpen the details by obscuring the grainy texture of the Model, I continued to apply subsequent layers.
5 layers later, and then primed white, you can see the result. The V.P. Bellator on the left, almost matches the Fine Detail Plastic  Secutor on the right.
I will caution, LIGHT COATS ARE KEY! It would be very easy to obscure the details you are trying to preserve, with some careless overstay. Be patient, and give it several thin coats, with appropriate dry time in between.

I don't know what you're talking about good sir.  Just never mind the can of gasoline I'm holding or the highway flare in my other hand.

Having worked retail for.... oh sweet jebus... over 20 years I know why packages are shaped the way they are.  It's about shelf presence.  Go to the grocery store some time and really look at how things are displayed.  The name brand products have big, bright labeling and generally located at the beginning of an aisle, or mid-shelf level so you look right at it.  Where as store brand are bottom or top shelf and towards the middle of the aisle.  With game packaging you've got to compete with the other guy's package (more so than at a store), so it comes down to shelf presence, something with a bigger footprint will get noticed.
Plus I'm sure it helps having one supplier make all the cardboard/plastic for FFG.  Bulk discounts and all that.
Also if you want to complain about excessive packaging look at the Armada releases or even the Epic ships.

    This.
    And this.

Possibly also, as others have mentioned, the costs saved when packaging is a uniform size, but they could just as easily make them uniformly small. The main reasons are the two listed above. The fact of the matter is that the larger packaging results in better shelf presence which leads to better sales, and the larger size helps customers feel better about the price.
They did the same thing with the Silencer when they released it- it’s was a $30 expansion so they put it in a bigger box, even though it would have fit neatly inside the same blisters that they sold their $20 ships in. But you can’t have $20 blisters and $30 blisters be the same size sitting right next to each other, because otherwise customers feel like the $30 blister is a rip off.

This is one of those cases where it’s perfectly fine to take your money elsewhere. Ordering just 4 of each shows they are out of touch with the game and the community.
Might be good idea next time though to call into the store a week in advance to reserve your copies so they know to order extra.

Too many question for this tiny thing,
Are they a ship or an obstacle?
If they are a ship how does final Solo work?
Do you need to destroy them for full points?
If they are an obstacle can you blow them up with siemic charges?
If you drop a shoot on top of it does it go away or does it need to move on top of something?
Is it something else or something more?
