I'm basing my recommendation on what I've seen with X-Wing. Making the points variable has been the best thing for the game. I've been using it for almost a year now and it works great. And yes, I can use my free, fan made app at the table and create a list in just a few moments. I also do it with my free Armada app and make many armada lists as I'm standing at the table. It's not what I "expect", it's what I've experienced. It works, it's great, and it could help the competitive side of Armada. If you're a casual player, you won't have to use it.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you feel about FAQ/Errata? Those are similarly online only, with only a few cards being reprinted with the new text (Rhymer Alt Art is the only one I can think of off the top of my head). It seems like the points value would be even less of an issue. If you and your opponent choose to, you can completely ignore the online rules and just use the printed point values (without the benefit of the balancing that the updated points cost reflect). If FFG discontinues Armada or goes out of business, the last PDF should still be available (somewhere online) or the printed card values could be used. This isn't directed at you exclusively @Darth Lupine, I'm just trying to understand why people dislike the option.

As it should. Makes things easier to balance after nerfing, buffing, or under/over costing initially. Not something to do lightly, maybe twice a year for a points balance.

No one was incorrect, but my estimation would be that 95-99% of people do.  In fact, I've never personally encountered another player that sits down with a notebook to make their fleets.  The switch to an app-based, points-fluid environment *is* coming, so be prepared.

Cross era play will surely be allowed. So, we’ll just have to rely on everyone’s strict adherence to canon to avoid aesthetically-unpleasing cross-era matchups.

As a Rebel player, I also have concerns about 1200 points.  Maybe even 800.  It's not every ship, but there are enough Rebel ships that want to be going sideways that I'm worried about constant collisions without more space to be able to move in.

Yep,I paint my bases black and sharpie all the cardboard edges as well. I've seen rebel fleets with white bases before.

The Denver metro couldn't get an Armada Regional this year, and I'm mad as heck about it!  To fix this awful injustice, we're starting bi-monthly tournaments at Total Escape Games every other month, starting at 4/20 (June 15th, August 17th are our next two scheduled events).  Entry fee is $5, standard list building rules.  Come on over and have some fun with us!

    Total Escape Games - www.TotalEscapeGames.com
Entry fee will be $5, prizes provided from FFG.
Start time is 11 am, running until ~7pm.
    Three rounds, 400 points.

Hey there @JauntyChapeau! Glad to hear Armada is still going on down there. I think I may try and make my way down there for one of those tournaments. We really need get Regionals back to Denver!!!

This is part of the reason I can't play Vassal.  There's no sound, there's no interaction, there's no plastic models to look at, just me staring at my screen until I get bored and open a new Reddit tab.

I've had this thought several times.  One of the games played at a local store (Warmachine?) uses the clocks.  Give each player an hour on the clock with agreed-upon pauses for rule discussions.  If your clock runs out, you lose.  If you can't get through six turns of Armada in that time frame, you need to learn to play your fleets faster.

Have you played RoboRally (there are other games too), that starts a timer on a player only when he is the last one working? In Armada, the command phases could be untimed, but when you finish your commands, you start the other guys clock. Obviously, each players' clock runs on his activations.
This is a house rule I could implement while teaching the noobs to speed up through their learning games when they are tempted to paralyze. I don't know if I'd house rule it as a game over, but just to show them how much time is being used.

There is a better solution to both of the problems - play squadronless!

Actually, I like the idea of removing pre measuring.
Mostly to limit the neverending squad measuring, but it would also serve as a soft nerf to squad play, as more mistakes will be made, and general more careful approaches to engagement between squads, as well as with ships.
Skill will play a greater role and gameplay would better represent the undetermined nature of space combat, where admirals cannot know in advance the position of each and every moving part.

oh my god, the last time I played in a Vassal tournament (it's been a long time), my opponent was in an earlier time zone so it was after midnight for me and this guy spent minutes fiddling with the maneuver tool every activation.  I was falling asleep waiting for this very pleasant guy who was still being a jerk.
