You’re missing the point several people have been making. Alan Dean Foster’s contact was not a Work for Hire contact. It was a perpetual royalty contract. In order to get out of paying royalties to Mr Foster, Disney would need to buy out his contract.
-
@Nytwyng, as had been repeatedly stated, what your “comic book” Lawyer is talking about are work for hire contracts. Alan Dean Foster was not under Work for Hire. His contact was a completely different contact for a completely different medium of storytelling. I’m a graphic designer by trade, there is a huge difference between a work for hire gig and Alan Dean Foster’s contact. Most book authors don’t work on a work for hire basis. They work on perpetual royalty contracts. You can’t apply comic book work for hire standards to perpetual royalty contracts.

Nope. Where would be the fun in that? 😝

The problem is the location of the weapon. Unless the weapon is mounted to the top or bottom of the ship, you’re not going to get a 360 degree firing arc. If placed anywhere els, you’re only going to get one firing arc. If it’s mounted to a front facing surface, you’re only going to get a forward facing arc. If mounted aft, an aft arc. If mounted on either side, a side facing arc. Only a dorsal or ventral mount can grant a 360 degree firing arc.

No. They were contracted by 20th Century Fox.
-
However, the difference with Foster is that he had the contact with Lucasfilm itself, the owner of the IP, not a licensee. As such the contract itself is still valid.

Ge’tal makes a flying leap over the desk, foot extended, and kicks the barabel square in the face. As the thug rolls with the blow, he turns and grins at her, barely feeling it. As she lands, she also notices the armor beneath his coat. “Hhhhmmm,” Ge’tal thinks. “Time for a new strategy.” -

My Cool and Vigilance are the same. Secondly, by RAW, if we don’t initially know or see our opponent, then you use Vigilance. You only use Cool, if you are the one preparing the ambush and know exactly where your opponent is or will be. We didn’t yet know exactly where he was, thus Vigilance is the appropriate skill used. In order for Falmok to properly act against the barabel in initiative order, we need to know where he is. We need to see him. Otherwise the initiative order is meaningless . -

When my cousin Jeff was starting college, his youngest brother was starting kindergarten. There are two other siblings in between, and all four have children of their own now. As with a number of historical warrior cultures, Mandalorians consider someone an adult as early as thirteen. That is when they come of age as a warrior. Thus, they are often experienced veterans by sixteen, and even more so by twenty. So there is no question that Bo Katan could be a veteran officer even at sixteen. -

The two PCs got to act because by RAW, we spot the enemy, we spot our target. My actions are based upon that rule in the book. As GM, you had the responsibility to provide us with our target’s location so that we could act upon that information. Instead you gave us a red herring preventing us from attacking our foe, and allowing him to get the drop on us despite two of us winning initiative. You asked me what my action was. My action was to attack the barabel with a boot to the Face in whichever room he is hiding. That is two maneuvers and an action. The Initiative rules explicitly state that an Initiative (Vigilance) roll that beats the ambusher’s Initiative, means we spot the ambush; we spot the Barabel. You are giving us information contrary to that rule. If he is not in that room, Ge’tal would not have gone into that room, because she would have spotted him in another room before moving. That is what the RAW says. So where is he? -

F&D CRB page 204 side bar: Both Falmok and Ge’tal beat the Barabel in initiative. By RAW, that means we spotted him, and know where he is. My choice of action was predicated on that knowledge. Secondly, if the barabel wasn’t in the office, I wouldn’t use a second maneuver to engage, if there’s no one to engage. -

Mine too. 😈 Of course Kate Sackhoff is only 40. As for abo Katan’s age, she could be as young as her mid to late 40s, if she were in her late teens during the Clone Wars. We don’t really know exactly how old she was back then, and Mandalorians consider someone to be an adult at thirteen, and marriageable at sixteen. If we presume her to be somewhere between sixteen and twenty at the end of the Clone Wars, that would make her no older than forty eight as of the events of The Mandalorian. -

Except the @RuusMarev himself said in his IC post right after that, that we were keeping our eyes peeled for signs of the barabel, sending Arno to block any exits, and the rest of us to find the barabel. That inherently means we’re all actively searching for him. That calls for Perception checks right there. -

Their belief system, according to Bo Katan was known as The Way of the Mandalore. We don’t have full details of all of their beliefs, though the prohibition from removing one’s helmet in front of others was a huge part of them. -

That may be. However, as for the shriekhawk sigil, that symbol was still used by Clan Viszla up until the Galactic Civil War. It was still used by the clan during the Clone Wars. The reason why it became associated with Death Watch is because a large majority of House Viszla leadership were indeed members of that group, and most of the members of Death Watch were from House Viszla, to the extent that House Viszla and Death Watch were nearly synonymous. However, once again, not all members of House Viszla were members of Death Watch, and, obviously, not all members of Death Watch were House Viszla. Now, the Children of the Watch is definitely a different sect all together. For one thing their ideology is different from Death Watch, particularly when it comes to removing their helmets, for starters. Members of Death Watch had no trouble removing their helmets whenever they wanted. We see Pre Viszla do it all the time. They also weren’t religious zealots. Death Watch may have wanted to maintain Mandalorian warrior tradition, but the Children of the Watch were much more radical, basically wanting to turn the clock back to the days of Mand’alor the Great when Mandalorians worshiped war as a religion. They were strict fundamentalists. That is very different from Death Watch. Not only that, but it is former members of Death Watch itself (remember, all three of Bo Katan’s group were Nite Owls, and were part of Death Watch up until Maul’s takeover) referring to The Children of the Watch as a separate splinter sect, a cult, that sought to return to the ancient ways. -

Except that there was no description of anything regarding the parking lot or surrounding area, resulting from his perception check; only a description of the interior of the building once we arrive at the door. You never tell us what we see in the parking lot. You only say we spot something of any importance inside the building, once we reach the entrance to it. That tells me that the Perception check was for the interior, for spotting the barabel, as well as any other related details; Because reading @RuusMarev’s post, and the fact that this was a group perception check, suggests we keeping our eyes peeled the whole way to the door, and that we were looking for the barabel. Not only that, but he doesn’t say anything about looking for an escape vehicle. Everything about his post suggested that he was keeping an eye out for the barabel and any possible escape vectors, none of which you actually give us. If you were going to put us into structured time against the barabel, wouldn’t it have made more sense to have us make another Perception roll once we made it to the entrance, before rolling initiative, to see if we could have spotted our quarry, and thus give us an actual chance to engage him without him ambushing us? -

We don’t know if the Children of the Watch have any connection to Death Watch. All we know is that the Mandalorian that rescued Din Djarin as a child was a member of Clan Viszla. That Shriekhawk emblem is House Viszla’s crest, after all. Death Watch may have adopted it as well since many of its members are House Viszla, but that doesn’t mean that all members of House Viszla were members of Death Watch. -

The salesman you said was tied up to the chair behind the desk to the left not in the office to the right. To quote: Those were your words. The only desk you ever described in the IC post was the one in the main room to our left. The salesman is tied up to our left. You said we see a flicker of shape moving in the office to the right, and a salesman tied up to the chair behind a desk on the opposite side of the room to our left. The movement we saw was in the office to our right further down. The salesman wouldn’t be able to cast a shadow that far across the foyer. The whole point of making a perception check right before Initiative is to spot our foe so we don’t get ambushed. You had us roll initiative right after rolling a perception check. That is typically done prior to an ambush, with Success meaning we spot the potential ambush and can attack as normal without being surprised, and, if we beat our foe’s initiative, we can attack him first. Why would we need to look for a conveyance if we’re already at our location? We would be looking for the Barabel. Not only that, but, given that Falmok’s check was a Success with Advantage, we should have been able to tell if the movement we saw was the barabel, as opposed to some helpless nook. If it had been with Threat, then yes, I could understand having us mistakes the Salesman for the barabel. As it stands, we’re going to be successfully ambushed with a surprise attack by our target even though we succeeded in our perception check and I wasted a perfectly good attack roll. I’m pretty sure that @RuusMarev was under the same conclusion (correct me if I’m wrong here, Ruus.) that the initiative roll was the start of combat with the barabel. That is also why I asked Ruus if we wanted him alive or not. I needed to know if I should attack with a weapon or brawling. You don’t send Ge’tal in to scout or reconnoiter. You send her in to bust heads. -

If he’s not in the room, why roll initiative? If we roll initiative we should be able to attack our target. According to your IC post, there was a “flicker of a shadow coming from the open door of an office about five meters down and to the right.” Your words. The salesman is in the chair behind the desk to the left. If Falmok succeeded in the Perception check, we should have spotted him, that means that our target is down that short corridor to the right, and thus I should be able to attack him. Five meters is an easy short range in one maneuver, and Engaged range in two. So, no, if he’s not in the middle of the room, Ge’tal wouldn’t just run into the middle of the room, wasting her maneuvers. She’d run to where we spotted him. If that’s where he is, that’s where Ge’tal would be going and attacking. That was my whole plan. Dash in directly to where we saw our target and attack. -
