Why are so many of the new ships so awful?

still not a convincing argument at all, though. his card states that you may choose a ship in your forward arc at range 0-2 and spend a force - and if you do...
well, you may choose a ship and spend a force means you may choose a ship and spend a force, nothing else.
saying that the "may" on vaders card means something other than how "may" is defined in the rules reference is, quite frankly, hogwash.

RampancyTW got a reaction from DR4CO in Nantex: Fun and frustrating.
Sigh.  Of course it's not literally the same thing in terms of ship capabilities.  The point is that if variance protects them at range, there's not much you can do since the way to definitively beat high-agility aces is to pin them down and deny them tokens/exits.  Otherwise it's just dice since you can't guarantee spike damage higher than their defenses.
I have a pretty good track record facing them so far, but it's not fun to play against them.  Four rounds of position jockeying followed by two rounds of combat where had the dice trends not been in my favor I would have had a really bad time re-engaging despite successfully lining up the perfect engage where I could not be tractored into a bad position.
That's why it's like 1.0 Fenn.  You sell out for the goldilocks engagement and hope the dice agree, because after that the game mechanics are going to favor the ship moving last that gets to ignore the downsides of being at R1 and can murder you extra-hard.

They have 3 Agility.  When the green dice fail, it's an easy focus fire to victory at R3.  When the green dice are on, it's functionally only possible to push damage through at R1, which is exactly where they kill you.

This is 1.0 Fenn w/ AT all over again, where unless you catch Fenn at R2 AND the dice cooperate, you're not doing damage, and you probably only get one good chance at it all match if the opponent knows what they're doing.  Dice variance will keep the Nantex from taking over the top tournament meta, but the inability to meaningfully block them is going to mean a lot of unlucky people are going to play as well as could be reasonably expected and still get crushed.

Is there any nice way of telling the large-ship, high-point value, MTG-combo-wombo turreted players that their style really is a pain in the butt for everyone to play with?

Issues 2 and 3 can be resolved in errata here also.

It's a great way to keep aces from teeing off on your ships, though.  Too risky for them to commit, so actions are instead spent making your prediction come true.  Ideal goal is one ship in position to fend off the flank with the rest in position to delete any ship that cruises down the main lane.
Otherwise you end up with an ace behind your ships and no way to touch it at all without no-mod turn-arounds.

While a general increase in randomness can help the underdog to a point, it's often unsatisfying. I'm not saying dice don't have their place in the game, but for every "Great Shot, kid, that was one in a million!" point where randomness creates an exciting and memorable turning point, there's several games where the dice are too hot or too cold and nobody gets to have fun. It doesn't help that variance reduction is not evenly available, either.

Well the timing specified is in the rules.  After being destroyed means right before it's removed.

Yeah, we had someone do that in our Fantasy league about 15 years ago. Still talked about how much of a **** move it was. Winning at all costs in the NFL is expected. It is professional football not friendly game football. If someone chopped blocked on a friendly game of football to win at all cost, they probably be facing jail time. Something to think about.

Basic sportsmanship calls for playing the game as it's intended to be played to the relative best of your ability leading to a fair and genuine outcome.

The fact that people choose to be unsportsmanlike for personal benefit for the sole reason of being able to and being personally fine with it is something that they should look deep within themselves about, especially because we're playing a ****ing plastic toy spaceships game.  Looking at you, @Mace Windu.
Playing X-Wing is nobody's profession.  It is nobody's job, and nobody is counting on it for anything other than personal enjoyment derived via miniatures moneypit.  Play the darn game, choose a strategy that ends it quickly but isn't throwing, and remember that you're playing a Star Wars pewpew game.

Mentally I merged you with other posters who have argued in the past from some heavy WAAC mentalities, which upon re-reading is not even close to what you were going for.  I would, however, hope that a community "shames" in the sense of calling out and actively discouraging anti-sportsmanlike behavior in a tournament setting, and the idea of avoiding playing the game everyone showed up to play in favor of gaming the system strikes me as highly unsporting.  Personal call-outs are A-OK, personal attacks and insults are not.

Adding to the weirdness, we have PZ-4CO, who reads "At the end of the Activation Phase, you may choose 1 friendly ship at range 1-2. If you do, transfer 1 calculate token to that ship. If your revealed maneuver is blue, you may transfer 1 focus token instead."  Which references the revealed maneuver at the end of the Activation Phase, but it's "at" the end, not after.  So Leia reduces it, and it's still within the implied timing window everyone is rolling with right now-- but the revealed maneuver is supposedly what's on the dial.
So now we're getting to R4 interacting with PZ-4CO crew, too.  It's a slightly different set of nonsense but is nebulous for the exact same reasons as Cova.  Definitely a mess that needs clarification.

Doesn't matter for the second half of the card, which enables you to SLAM regardless of what's on your bar a la Passive Sensors.

RampancyTW reacted to Maui. in Spot the Deliberate Mistake: Coaxium Hyperfuel
Because you can use those abilities while you're not stressed. You don't break every rule you have to in order to make an ability work; this is long established and well understood.
You can't use the hyperfuel ability without breaking the perform-action-only rule, so that ability breaks the perform-action-only rule.
  21. Thanks
RampancyTW reacted to Maui. in Spot the Deliberate Mistake: Coaxium Hyperfuel
Because FFG says it works that way.
I'm not arguing that it's a good ruling that is healthy for the game or the way rules are written, but it is the ruling. I don't consider it precedent-making because that would break the game.
  22. Thanks
RampancyTW reacted to InterceptorMad in Spot the Deliberate Mistake: Coaxium Hyperfuel
Yeah I don't see the issue here. The card is TELLING you how and why you can break the normal slam rules. Other cards (like Poe's ability you mentioned) don't say that (although he is still breaking the one action per turn rule).

This is the same as when a card states that you can do any sort of action while stressed. No one can do that, but that card is TELLING you that it can (in whatever way the text says) break that rule.
  23. Thanks

You apparently have a paranoia of CCL holders that is not backed in any way by statistics of their criminality.
Bearing arms in the US is a legal right and being prepared to defend yourself or others in the event of a dangerous altercation is thoroughly undeserving of the scorn and condescension you've been casting on it.  Many different types of people carry for many different reasons.  You are clearly not comfortable with the responsibility involved in carrying, but casting that discomfort onto others is simple projection.
I am happy for you that your life has been privileged enough to not consider legally carrying a weapon a reasonable option, and I hope it continues to stay that way.

I think planning phase needs to have a timer, 90 seconds max
I fly plenty of 4-6 ship lists and have no issues getting my dials down in that time, and a game ending at time 6 rounds deep is super frustrating and greatly increases the influence of variance on the outcome
