  1. I'm waiting for the person who doesn't want to roll their dice. I can actually imagine a scenario where they pick up the dice from their card and exhaust the card, roll a normal d6, then place the destiny dice down on the correct face.
  2. Mind Probe is overrated. But the main reason Holocron is good b/c you can get ANY ability in for free. Immobilize or Force Throw or Force Choke are going to be better IMO than any Mind Probe. ~D Fair comment. I only own Mind Probe and Immobilize at the moment.
  3. Played two games last night. Lost the first and won the second. In both games the Holocron never showed up before the game was over and in both games I had a mind probe in hand that I never had the resources to play normally. So in effect I'm running a 2 card combo where the second card is useless to me without the first (yes I can discard to re-roll but then the reason for having the holocron has just been discarded). When it works it works well but it's not going to always work and there is a high opportunity cost to be paid to have those cards in the deck. Your hand is only 5 cards and having one of them a blank hurts a lot.
  4. No problem. Plus with both starters I can always put them back together to introduce people to the game.
  5. The points on characters doesn't have to exactly equal 30, you can play with less and still be legal. So even if you didn't add Bala-Tik to your eKylo and Trooper from the starter you'd still be legal, at a slight disadvantage sure, but still a legal team. What does have to equal 30 though is the number of cards in your deck, which would be tough to do with just 1 starter and 2 boosters packs. I understand about the points but one big advantage is that Bala-Tik is yellow so allows you to add yellow cards to the 30 making getting there easier. The fact that he fits in the 10 point gap between Elite Kylo + Stormtrooper is helpful but not the major reason. Plus I used both starter packs not just one. That's the key, the Hero starter has a villain gun plus neutral cards plus you now can use yellow as well as blue/red.
  6. Double post. Please use the other thread to keep all discussion in the same place.
  7. Hi I just wanted to share something that I think is important when discussing getting into this game. There have been a few comments about needing to drop hundreds of <insert local currency here> to get started and the randomness of getting characters. I don't actually think it's as big a problem as some people are claiming and this is my experience. I've bought both starter sets and 2 boosters. Sadly I can't remember what the 'dice' card was from one of those boosters but I did pull Sith Holocron in one of them. I guess I could work out what the other one was by deduction but I don't have access to my cards right now. It wasn't a character I know that. I figured out that by adding a single Bala-Tik to what I had I could build a legal constructed villain deck. Sure I was lucky in that a player just gave me the Bala-Tik but checking locally I could have bought it from a dealer at the cost of a booster pack. So now I have a legal deck, how is it going to play out as there are certainly a few cards I'm playing because I have to rather than want to? Last night I played two games against people with large collections. I lost the first and won the second. Both of the games were close and I'd say that I lost the first because my opponent was just a better player with more experience not because his deck crushed mine. I won the second and it was one of those games where I either won that turn or lost on the next so very close and great fun to play. Just for the record my Holocron never showed up in either game so it's not like that was a pivotal part of my results! It's not a lot of evidence but I now really believe that it's possible to play and enjoy the game with one of each starter set and Bala-Tik. Maybe I used a couple of other cards from my 2 boosters I can't be totally sure without checking but I do have a couple of cards that could legally go in the deck left over. At the moment the price of Bala-Tik is low enough not to add any significant amount to the cost but even if it somehow spikes in price you would in theory at least have the hero side of the starters to trade for it. So yeah, you can play for an almost fixed cost of roughly the total price of the starters and a booster. You may want Vader/Raider or some other deck design but it's possible to have fun without immediately having to buy boxes of boosters.

  9. I'm still trying to figure a reasonable way to draft this game as I'm pretty certain that it needs a sealed or draft format to keep it moving. Constructed is fine and fun but if that is all there is then they will either have to have a super fast release rate for sets or people are going to get bored and drift away. A viable draft format is what keeps players playing a CCG and product trickling into the system. In my view it's necessary for the long term play-ability of the game.

  11. OK, as a long time Magic player I'm going to point out something here newer people into the CCG world may have missed. We all know about the failings of the CCG model when you just can't seem to open what you want. I have personal experience of the general futility of trying to trade from Magic. Most of what you get has zero trade value so you can probably complete your set of unused or very common cards but you can't trade them all into a Vader, just not going to happen. I've found for Magic that the best way is to not get sucked into the 'opening boosters' addiction at all and only buy what I want from the secondary market. Card prices may be high but you are getting what you want not just a chance at what you want. Now here is the real 'trick' to making that stance work. When you play with your buddies on the kitchen table and are testing your deck ideas and builds just take that common that is worth nothing that you have 6 copies of and write VADER on it in big letters. Proxy what you want to test and only go to the secondary market to buy cards you know you need. The dice are six sided so just use some old dice you have lying around. You only need the proper stuff when playing at a store or a sanctioned event and even then you may be able to borrow from people not attending rather than buying from the dealers. CCG's are a huge money sink but if you use just a little common sense you can reduce the cost.
  12. Helps a lot Zerotc thanks. It's not that my second list has to be good against aces it's more that if my first list is Imp aces then I don't really want a second list that is weak to the same things that my first list is weak to. In breaking news from the TO we are apparently allowed two list from the same faction so I may just put together either a TIE defenders build or a mini TIE swarm plus something to flood the board with cheap ships. On the other hand if I can source a K-Wing before the event it would be worth it just to have a better Rebel list available in the future. This seems suitably not aces.... PILOTS Academy Pilot (12) x 2 Epsilon Squadron Pilot (15) x 2 “Howlrunner” (20) TIE Fighter (18), Swarm Tactics (2) “Omega Leader” (26) TIE/fo Fighter (21), Comm Relay (3), Juke (2)
  13. Hi folks. I've been playing X-wing for a little while (Since May 4th this year!) and have concentrated on Imperial stuff. I'm no real expert but I can put a few imperial lists together that I like to play. I tend to be a 'trip aces' fan swapping the individual aces around for some variety. Now there is talk locally of a 'Hanger Bay' style tournament which means that whatever I take I'm going to need a second list to accompany it. Is there anything I can do with my very limited collection of Rebel ships? I don't mind needing a purchase or maybe two but a 5 A-Wing list with all the trimmings is out I'm afraid. Ideally it would complement a 'trip aces' list but at the moment anything seems like a stretch. The only thing I've come up with so far is this (and it's probably just rubbish). [Collection totals in signature so you have an idea of what I own] PILOTS Nera Dantels (35) B-Wing (26), Proton Torpedoes (4), Proton Torpedoes (4), Deadeye (1), Guidance Chips (0) “Red Ace” (36) T-70 X-Wing (29), R2-D2 (4), Comm Relay (3), Integrated Astromech (0) Gemmer Sojan (29) A-Wing (22), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Stealth Device (3), Crack Shot (1)
  14. I bought the autothruster expansion box. You're telling me there is a ship in there as well? Joking aside I actually started painting it simply because it was the only ship I'd never used and can't see me using so if the paint job was terrible it wouldn't matter! Never finished the painting either......
  15. Yep, much like limited Magic The Gathering the format is not for everyone. You can regain some of your 'entry fee' in the secondary market value of your 'product' or if you are lucky by opening 'product' you would have bought yourself anyway. There is a subset of players however (those with large collections and limited budget) that this is not an ideal format for. You just have to work out, on a personal level, if the extra cost of entry is worth the experience of a days gaming against non standard lists. If you can afford the cost and don't mind duplicated stuff or if you are starting out in the game or even a specific faction where the chances of duplicates are minimal then it's a novel way to play the game. I didn't play in this one as despite being local I couldn't be sure I'd be able to be free on the day. I didn't want to 'steal' a slot and then not turn up as it was so popular. I may well have a go at the second one however.
