FFG said that you would not need to buy out of faction to get generic upgrade cards and that looks to be the case.

Cultiststeve reacted to KrisWall in Fun Fact... From Announcement to In Store
I get bored at work a lot, so I've been tracking stats on when various FFG items change status on the upcoming page and I've noticed a few things.
The core game took 251 days from announcement to in store.  Core games are all over the place.  They take as long as they take.  Expansions, on the other hand are pretty consistent.
Lord Hawethorne, Spearmen, Ankaur Maro and Reanimates were 104 days from annoucement to in store.  The other four expansions that have hit so far were 108 days from announcement to in store.  This is admittedly a tiny data set, but if it holds, I'd expect the Latari Elves Army Box to hit end of July.  7/27 would be 108 days since announcement.
Generally speaking, FFG is pretty consistent within a specific product line.  I've been able to successfully predict the release dates for all of the Arkham Horror LCG releases so far +/-1 week.  I'm expecting the next Mythos pack on 7/13 or 7/20...  probably 7/20.

Cultiststeve reacted to Willange in Points and Unit Balance: Spearmen vs Oathsworn
Recently, I've been trying to break down why units are costed the way they are.  I've been doing my own analysis on this pretty much since the game came out, but I hit upon a unit comparison that I thought would be fun to bring to you guys for some discussion, Spearmen vs Oathsworn Cavalry.  EDIT: For reference, here are the links to their cards/dials -> Spearmen | Oathsworn Cavalry
Cost.  Spearmen win here being roughly 10-14% cheaper depending on the size of the formations being compared. Abilities. Oathsworn obviously win here since they have Impact 1 in addition to the inspiration ability that both units share. Attack Profiles. Oathsworn win here again by a lot since they have an extra red die.  And if you want a rough estimate that's a whopping 50% more dice than the Spearmen Dial.  This is a little bit complicated but let's do some sub-points to break it down:  Movement.  Oathsworn can charge from a greater distance and have more options in general for just plowing straight forward at various speeds; this is partly due to their March-2 bonus action.  It seems significant that the two units do have the same initiative on their March-2 and March-3 actions.  Spearmen, however, can reform earlier in the round (which means getting a defense modifier up or using a skill earlier).  Spearmen also have a wheel modifier and a shift action which are both missing for the Oathsworn.  In short, Spearmen can be a bit more wily and tend to change directions more easily, but Oathsworn can move much faster across the board and charge from further out. Attack.  These are equivalent for most intents and purposes.  We'll go over the white modifier differences in another point. Rally.  Mostly equivalent. Skill bonus action.  This is one of the areas where Spearmen are much stronger than Oathsworn.  The white skill icon is clearly better than the blue one that Oathsworn have.  This lets Spearmen use all kinds of upgrades in creative ways that Oathsworn simply can't even when they can still technically equip them. Defense modifier. The Oathsworn have the better defense modifier.  However, it is worth noting that defense modifiers are generally better on infantry than cavalry when you look at the 'raw hp'.  Spearmen go from 4 damage per tray to 8 whereas Oathsworn go from 4 to only 6 due to lower figure count.  Overall, the Oathsworn still probably win on this point since they can use the modifier while using melee attack actions and especially the yellow melee attack action. Upgrades. I won't go into tons of detail with these as you can all see pretty well where the differences are.  They're very similar units for upgrades, but the major difference for me is that there are far more upgrades for infantry than for cavalry. In fact, the cavalry classification on a unit is generally worse than infantry at this point in the game's life.  It almost seems like a penalty. So with all these points in mind (I'll add others if it turns out I missed some big ones), is there a unit that is better?  What lessons can we learn about how the designers are placing the cost of units based off of this comparison?

These are interesting units to me because, on the surface, you see similar durability durability and comparable mobility on each but then the Oathsworn get an extra die and an extra ability for only 10% more points.  After analyzing further,  it's clear that Spearmen make up for some of this in generally having more upgrade options and having a good skill icon, but do they make up for it all the way?  I'd love to hear what you guys think about the balance of these units!

P.S. I think they're balanced or at least very close to balanced so this is not a complaint thread.  I'm just trying to get better at analyzing these things.  I figured 2 similar units within the same faction is a pretty easy place to start.

Hey I have have a look and it looks cool, its nice there is a choice for people. But as Armament said, having a mature multi-platform program like Battlescribe is better for myself.

Thanks for the catches. I have made the fixes and the new version should be hosted within 24 hours.
Thanks, thats a good idea and I will check it out when I get the time. I moved house recently so have been too busy in the last couple of weeks, but I will check it out when I am able to for sure.

I would also say to everyone, the data files are open source and can be found at https://github.com/BSData/runewars . Anyone who fancies a go is able to download the files and make changes, then reuplolad the files to me, or create a merge request into that repository.

I decided I would give it a go.  I happen to also be a professional developer so I figured I would actually lend a hand instead of just things of note.  I will get it all forked and set up this weekend.
A short note, The Waiquir are missing one of their musician model upgrades option, the Tactical Drummer.  I will try using that as a toe in the water deal.  Then one of the things I want to look at aside from the artifact upgrade dudes, is maybe changing how the heros work?  So that if you put one out, it won't let the upgrade be select, and also make it so you can't add the hero more times.  This will be good to look at now, as they have said down the road their will unique units as well that are not just heros.

It's possible I have an out of date file, but the Lord Hawthorne contents look to have some issues. The man himself has champion and equipment upgrades instead of artifact, the shield of margath shows 0 points instead of six, and the dawnblade is a unique instead of artifact upgrade.

Battle scribes biggest advantage is that its a mobile app, so I can just whip my phone out, set up my list then put it away.  And it works for ALL of the wargames I play, so I definitely don't mind helping someone figure out how to get the tool going.

Cultiststeve reacted to BigKahuna in Core Set Balance After a Couple of Weeks
Oh I agree whole heartedly and the truth is that might already be true.  You have to keep in mind for most people experimentation with Runewars right now is taking place with 1 or 2 Core sets, really most people aren't even playing full 200 point games (because even with 2 core sets that really not possible unless you just put everything on the table and even then your short).
Because I run a blog (Gamersdungeon.net) and I belong to a gaming club, we tend to take big ticket items like a new miniature game from FFG a bit serious (you could say we are serious nerds, I wear that badge with pride).  As a result our experimentation has been with 3 core sets, proxy units and cards.  We are getting a better and better picture all the time as we often play several games a week.
Suffice to say even with that there is a TON of experimentation left to do but I can tell you that from my most recent game with 2x1 Archer units with Combat Ingenuity we have without any doubt discovered a clear meta in the first wave in my opinion.  2x1 Archers (with combat ingenuity) were on average putting 2-3 blight every time they rolled dice and that had immense impact on the battle rendering powerful opposing units effectively useless and forcing the opponent to chase Archers.  It really just makes blight 100% reliable and not just to feed mortal wounds for units like Ardus and Lancers, but really has a incredible defense mechanism which rendered the normally aggressive Daqan quite docile.
I agree that blight will probably remain a key aspect of the Undead army for quite a while to come at least.  I think its really the versatility of the mechanic being both an offensive and defensive tool that makes it so good, but in particular after the introduction of Combat Ingenuity it is again, 100% reliable now which just makes not using it difficult to justify.
It is worth pointing out however that there is a lot left to be revealed at this point and like Combat Ingenuity, it really only takes 1 card to change the entire list building potential.  Its really way to early to assume that Waiqar will be a "blighting" only army and I agree, I would guess that this is a very unlikely scenario once everything on the block is released/revealed.

    COMMAND UNITS are commented below!
Here's my first set of Daqan infantry. Instead of knights serving under one banner, I wanted each knight to have his/her own coat of arms and I'm painting my infantry to support those individual knights. Each set of four infantry will have its own paint scheme, but still be tied together with a predominance of silver armor. You can view the high quality photos on my flickr account https://www.flickr.com/photos/143447216@N03/33522176794/in/dateposted-public/ and I'll upload more as they are finished.

Hi all! I've been posting some videos as I come to grips with the game. I am taking a fairly relaxed approach to Runewars, which is out of character for me. Usually, I go all in, devour the rules, and research games like it's my job. But, now, my real job and kid have me re-evaluating my approach to Runewars. I say all that only to sandbag a bit: There will be mistakes!
I'll be playing Skirmish until 2 things happen: 1- I can get another FFG grass mat. 2- I can get 150ish points worth of models painted. For now, they will remain a mix of painted and unpainted, but you can follow my progress as the games go on!
Without further ado. First game, right out of the box:

I'm used to this kind of talk in X-wing forums, but at least there the game is old, complex, has tens of thousands of hours of play time, and lots of moving parts.
Waiqar are a control & synergy army right now - who knows what they'll become as the actual meat of the game is revealed. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again with them.
