It's from the previous version of descent, sadly you don't get a monkey token this time around

This is not the case, it's entirely possible for you to crush the heroes but you need to play it like a game of chess.
Just like chess you do REALLY have to think through your moves in this game. If in chess you were to pick the horsey for your turn because it sounds cool for the scene...just think about how that would turn out. The game's going the same way for you here for the same reason.
The things you're complaining about are entirely solvable but you certainly don't need to solve them if you are not inclined. There are plenty of other dungeon crawls out there, the D&D adventure system games for instance would accommodate your whole group without anyone playing overlord.
And a bunch of Descent's components are between printings at the moment so this would be a good time to sell. Valyndra which should be $10-14 is going new on amazon for $45: https://www.amazon.com/Descent-Second-Valyndra-Lieutenant-Pack/dp/1616616547/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1508798755&sr=8-2-fkmr0&keywords=descent+splig
I can't even find Splig on amazon
And the base set is even up a bit compared to what I usually see it going for on amazon. So if you've decided to sell (which is what it sounds like) do it before the boat hits shore because prices will drop.
Right now I expect you can get your money back out of the game and it will go to somebody who really wants it, everybody wins!

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Certainly we shouldn't have been expecting this to have been a physical expansion. Whether I'll enjoy this, *shrug* no idea. Though I don't imagine it'll get much play time at the table. I don't know if they expected this to be a stunning success or if it was just a quick to make DLC they could pump out while they're concentrating on starwars.
But going a while between physical expansions doesn't mean there won't be any anymore. Certainly we can't expect them to follow the MOM release schedule, they already have plenty of existing content to port over.
However there are certain classes and characters that get nerfed in RtL as well. At the very least if RtL is sufficiently successful some kind of conversion kit is not at all out of the question.

That's never going to happen, if FFG releases a base set for a new version it needs to be really generic so that players who only own said base set can use it with any future expansion. FFG would be seriously shooting themselves in the foot to put out the 3rd edition base in some peculiar setting as they'd be stuck trying to work let's say frozen tiles from the base into every future map on the whole 3rd edition product line.

To be fair I was responding to someone scrambling to buy everything while he could still get a hold of it. Yeah reprints doesn't mean that we'll get new expansions. But it does mean that nobody needs to be running out and paying $150 for the core box on amazon either.
However,  I do think the amount of digital content is a pretty clear indication that we will be seeing more of Descent.
If FFG was just looking to sell a digital campaign or two there's no real incentive for them to put out the amount of RtL content that they have for free. All the work they've done putting together free quests for the expansions and H&M packs and giving away free campaigns really only makes sense if they're laying the groundwork to use this platform for a while.
RtL only came out last year and there are already 2 big box campaigns and one small box campaign as well as Delve and all the side quests. That's a huge amount of content for a board game company to put out in a short period of time and it's completely unsurprising that they're giving us time to digest it before trying to sell us more.

Doesn't seem like it makes much sense for them to produce a second version of the core box as well as a widely successful app only to can it almost immediately. Seems to me like V3 has already come out in the form of road to legend, it just remains to be seen how long they will support both versions of the game.

It's a significantly different and awesome game. To me Descent 1ed has much more of a dungeon crawl, exploring huge sprawling dungeons. 2ed is more of a tactical mini's game where some quests feel more like capture the flag than anything else. I've actually been buying up 1ed recently as I don't get a chance to game with my friend who owned it all anymore.

One thing that was cool with the game night kits is they brought back the dungeon sprawl and exploration aspects of the game. I'd love to see a bit more of that same feel in some of the future RtL DLC.

I received a response from FFG Software saying that they should have a fix out for the save game black screen issue next week.

I think there's kind of a catch 22 here. The problem for me is that I game with avid gamers. When we're picking what to play we're choosing between hundreds of games. As such when I bring a game I like to the table is has to go well or it almost certainly isn't making it to the table again.
So if the content in the quest vault had been fan tested enough that I could be confident of the quality control that would be one thing but when I'm looking at the top rated quests and find things like:
    "Version Notes
Hey guys, this quest is broken. It only has thumbs up because it was the third quest ever in the Quest Vault. Avoid playing until I do some serious fixes. "  *Seems like that message has been there for years*
    or
"how much life does the bishop have?" *killing the bishop is the OL's win condition, kind of important to know*
    or
    "has this been play tested?"

See where I'm going with this? I just don't dare bring this stuff to the table...

DerDelphi's custom coop was great. It is too bad it received limited interest/feedback (I'm guilty of that). I do believe there would be more community content if the community expressed more interest.

I think Road to Legend is a good way to teach the game and then I'd suggest mini campaigns or the delve. A full campaign can be a lot to get a group to commit to right off the bat these days.

It's a complex game. One route to find people is to establish a group on a site like meetup or at your local game store. Another option is that it's possible to play games over the internet. One way to do that is play by forum over at boardgamegeek: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/1064199/descent-journeys-dark-second-edition/play-forum

You could give the Delve or the game night kits a try. No overlord but they are made to be played in a single night.

    Isheim.
    1. Tomb of Ice is the second highest rated original expansion after Road to Legend. Recognizing the popularity of their most popular expansion they incorporated it's theme into the base game. Tomb of Ice on the other hand, hasn't seen a lot of attention...
    2. Cold is the least common trait in the game, it really could use some love and an expansion that featured it heavily could boost sales for a couple of H&M packs and get some really cool monsters more play time.

Well, the app is a real game changer. They don't have to risk the sort of resources they would with a print run. They could do an expansion moving between the different regions of Terrinoth by boat which would have a lot of synergy with owning the various expansions.
And they could use boat  mechanics along the lines of Starfinder or make it more like the travel step putting it entirely within the app which could elevate the need to make a significant gamble in the gimmick being well received.
So long as it were to come out far enough into Road to Legend that the fan base is sold on this version of decent *shrug* what's the harm.

You're dismissing a larger, less biased set of data in favor of a smaller more biased set of data, I'm doing the opposite.  We've both recognized that's the case at this point. Which of these strategies is correct isn't simply a matter of opinion, one strategy is objectively better than the other.
And yes you're completely right that my comment about America has nothing to do with this discussion. However, as an American it has everything to do with why I face palm and worry about the future when I run into a gamer thinking like an antivaxxer.

*sigh* And this is why Americans are having such a hard time staying oriented to reality these days. You're ignoring most of the data at your disposal in favor of your personal experiences.
