    Hello,
I was recently looking through of my old WotC D20 star wars core book, and that made my kinda nostalgic got me looking around at the current state of SW RPGs.
I'm at a point in my life where coming up with a two hours every Tuesday night (or whenever) for a table top game would be hard, but I have time most nights to put a post together or two.
In looking around online, and reading the FFG forums it seem that the narrative dice of this system help make this game pretty friendly to play by forum, particularly compared to the D20 system that needed a map for combat.   (That being said I really liked the D20 system, but I am also a sucker for FFG,'s stuff playing the LotR LCG, Imperial Assault and Armada although my Armada ships are basically display pieces at this point).
So as the thread title says I am about ready to bye in, I just have a couple of questions if you all have time.
My understanding is that all three core books are relatively the same, except if you want to play with force users you need Force and Destiny is that correct?
I have a very rough outline of a game arc with my D20 stuff that would be set in the Old Republic, just before or after the invasion of Naboo (personal agents of the Supreme Chancellor, start working for Valorum then get transferred to Palps and see if the PC's get suspicious of the missions he sends them on) .  Are any of the systems more geared to the Epp 1-3 time line or do all equally work there?  My impression is all of the systems are geared towards the GCW era, but folks have found ways around that, and with the new rise of the separatists book that will help flesh out that era a bit.
My initial thoughts would be to buy one beginner game and one core book in the same system, and play through the beginner game at home with a couple of friends, then try to play online here.  Would that work or would I need some additional source books or is there something else you would all recommend?
    Thank you.

For the rest of the people in this thread, Tramp is an old friend from church that I met (circa 2004) when I was getting a PhD at the University at Buffalo.  We frequently disagree on things and "argue like an old married couple" but we deal with it, so don't be surprised if a debate comes out of this and know that it's not as contentious as it'll likely sound... it's just how we communicate with each other.

The others make good points. It can be unbalancing but you may be able to counter it by giving the other characters a bonus. Offer each player the option of +1 Force Rating or +1 Dedication for free.

to echo Daeglan's question, have you and your group played this before?
Reason we ask is because there's a substantial increase in a Force using character's ability once they reach Force Rating 2, as the PC will now more reliably be able to activate Force powers without suffering strain and can probably get one or two upgrades to activate as well.  To put into D&D/Pathfinder terms, allowing a starting XP character to have Force Rating 2 (even if purchased) is akin to allowing a 1st level spellcaster to be able to cast 2nd level spells (a 3rd level feature) while the rest of the party are stuck with the usual 1st level spells for the rather measly cost of only having 2/3rds as many points to buy ability scores as the rest of the party.  It's not totally game breaking, but it does skew the balance of power, especially once that PC is able to invest XP into Force powers such as Move and Influence, where Force Rating 2 allows them to accomplish a whole lot more in encounters than they could manage with just one Force die.
If your PC is really deadset on being a "Force prodigy," the best suggestion is to have them start out in either Seer, Sage, or Hermit (from Savage Spirits), all three of which can pretty easily get a PC up to Force Rating 3.  Or, if they want to be skilled at using a lightsaber while not sacrificing Force prowess, then AnomalousAuthor's suggestion of having them take the Padawan specialization is a good one, as the spec offers a Force Rating talent at a very low cost.
The thing with doing a straight XP calculation such as you've done is that part of the cost of getting to that Force Rating talent includes buying other abilities that the PC gets to make use of.  If you really are determined to let this character begin with Force Rating 2, then I'd suggest only charging 50 XP, or about double what most specs have you pay for the talent.  This way, the PC is still paying a premium to get that talent early, but not exactly one that's crippling in the early going where characteristics are more important than skill ranks (good rule of thumb is you want at least a 3 in the core characteristics for your build if you want the character to be reasonably effective right out the gate).
Or alternatively, and this is something I've been toying with, is to adopt a page out of the Genesys sourcebook Realms of Terrinoth and grant this PC a Heroic Ability (similar to Signature Abilities but available right at character creation and aren't linked to any specific career) that allows them to do spectacular Force effects, at the cost of 2 Destiny Points and initially being limited to once per session, with options to as the PC gains XP to unlock various upgrades to said ability.  Said ability (working title of "Strong in the Force") at base would allow the PC to roll an additional Force die when activating a Force power/talent, while the improved version would allow the PC to re-roll up to two Force dice, and the supreme version would mirror the Unleashed Power upgrade in the Mystic's Unmatched Destiny Signature Ability, in addition to having various upgrades to reduce the Destiny Point cost or increase how often the ability can be used per session.  There'd be no XP cost for this, but at the same time I'd offer the rest of the PCs the option to take a Heroic Ability from Realms of Terrinoth as well, tailored to their character's abilities.

Welcome back. Your participation is always welcomed.  The p2m and m2p clamp naming convention is a great idea that I plan to adopt.  As for vehicles being called "pods" check out the consular cruiser in disciples of harmony (it has a "salon pod" which is a separate vehicle)

    Welcome back.
Most of the dicsussions for the above are on the previous page.
As for the armor situation, it's most of the speeder bikes and swoops, land speeders a number of air speeders and 4 walkers that have 0 armor. Elias came up with an idea that those frames reduce the armor granted by Hull by 1, which I have been using to test the walkers so far.

I disagree that it's beyond the scope of the document, would think that there should be a two triumph "mass production ready" crafting upgrade on assembly, that sets the difficulty at the standard difficulty (not reduced by schematic) of each component, and simple success with no threat or despair is needed to duplicate it one of the components, the only thing advantageor triumph can be used for during mass production is lessons learned... and it just there to increase likelihood of success.

Elias, question that is a little beyond the scope of this document, but wanting your input (and others of course!)
Production models. We are constructing all of the ships/vehicles as if they are one off vehicles. How would you handle production? Obviously it would "lock out" any additional modifications that are left undone thus forcing aftermarket attachments, but any thoughts on how to go from there?
Just asking because if a player does all of the hard work and comes up with a very good design and tries to market it, what would the final "actual" vehicle/ship look like?
Just a thought exercise for me. The money from selling a design would of course be an issue...or not depending on your game, but definitely a curiosity.

Updated the pdf: now has folding seats, a bike rack, and the speed and handling penality for a modular pod the same size as the mothership now matches the nu shuttle from rise of the separatists.  other miscellany changes too.

Maybe a rule where any crafting upgrade that doesn't require a triumph that is limited to a certain number of times you can get it one extra time for the cost of a triumph.

Ok, I chose the first name of our first born... he is Samuel L... so the agreement was she'd get to choose the first name of our next child
Last Friday we found out she's pregnant again,
For a girl we like Abigail but for a boy she wants Elias (the likes the name from the character on person of interest) and didn't know that I've been playing a character named Elias Windrider and going by that screen name on forums since 2005.  I told her that I'd prefer not to name our son after one of my rpg characters but she's insisting on Elias so yeah if we have another boy Elias is the frontrunner

Easy questions get answered quicker, they probably have a committee to decide rule questions they hadn't thought about before.  In the meantime their customers suffer and die while they discuss this in a committee, padme would call for a vote of non confidence. ?
