I have played so many games in the table top naval genre... my current favorites that I actively play are Star Wars: Armada, Axis and Allies: War at Sea, and limited amounts of DropFleet Commanders (still raw from that KS).  Others included Battlefleet Gothic, Victory at Sea, Pirates, StarFleet Battles, and Age of Sail.

My table top gaming experience has mostly revolved around 40k (I own several companies of various marines and almost as much Chaos/Tau/Orc/Necrons and others), but currently I'm more in to XWing and games that are less demanding on my wallet and time.

My Star Wars knowledge goes all the way back to the old West End games and RPG and if you haven't read those sourcebooks, then you need to, as they are very much the source material for much of the "new" stuff that FFG and Disney are putting out these days.
