Thanks for posting and thanks to you and others who have labored and shared their work. My wife and I went all in with D2E about a year ago and still love playing it. We're on our third campaign in RTL and have one to go after that. The plan is to then make the move to fan made content such as Valkyrie and Automated overlord variants for the existing quests. We'll probably eventually end up getting the new Descent whatever it is, but have no plans to retiring D2E. I still think there is a market for more RTL campaigns (I know I'd buy them) but probably not too likely now given that FFG will want everyone to migrate to the new game.

jopan reacted to Watercolour Dragon in Keeping second edition's 'journeys' going....
As FFG aren't making any new second edition physical expansion content* I just wanted to say I will continue working on my new fan content for 2e regardless of the future of 'Descent' so there will still be quite a bit of new stuff for 2e from my projects as I will be continuing these whatever the future brings to the table, so no need to scrap your 2e collections if you're hungry for new stuff, 2e will remain very much alive. I'm sure other makers will continue with their own works in progress.

My 2e work in progress is as big as that big box of big boxiness, bigger in fact, so all in all with that too there's a lot of Terrinoth on the way for the next few years at least

I might even ultimately weave it into whatever's in that box so it works with or without whatever's in there, but it will still offer plenty of 2e-only/not needing the new stuff stuff , likewise some new stuff not needing the old stuff stuff once I know what we're getting thus what I have to work with (want to make sure my stuff covers all bases for what people do/don't own)

As my fan project overlaps 1e and some other Terrinoth game bits too (I'm working on potential solutions for people without 1e and the other bits, many of which like the big Battlelore minis are no longer available) it might be unique in bridging the game content like this.

    * we don't know but there may still be new RTL app stuff, this is still a ? I think

I'm almost sure that the v3 if any is going to happen will be like MoM v2 or Middle earth with an app and few figures and tiles to justify the board game thing.

And if it ever goes that way, I'm out

Yes and no, Runebound 3e plus the conversion kit let me add heroes with updated sculpts to Descent 2e.
I think starting 3e with the 12 missing heroes could go a long way toward placating some of their more hardcore fans.

Runebound and Runewars were dead on arrival, they're still canning Genesys right?
So if they misread the amount of work to price ratio as badly as they have been and flub descent.....

One thing I'm sure. If a third edition happens, I'll not buy a thing. I'm not playing 2nd edition for years, not to mention 1st edition. But I use mainly the tiles from the games often. Not even the minis I use anymore cause I have a good stock of D&D minis, so it's entirely of no use for me to buy a third edition of descent.

All of my friends who bought 1st edition never bought 2nd. I don't think the average consumer keeps buying new versions of the same game. I think new editions of a game are about updating a game so that it's competitive in the current market to appeal to a new generation.
If a games been out, say 10 years it makes a lot of sense that something like that would need to happen and that a NEW generation would in fact be there to buy it. The problem I think FFG may run into is that RtL is for all intents and purposes a new game which has already taken that new fanbase. Is there already ANOTHER new generation to sell to?

I’ve spent too much money building up a 2nd edition collection.  I have no interest in starting over now especially with their much higher prices for everything.  I loved Descent.  I owned 1st edition base and RtL.  2nd edition, I went all in.  There are only a couple of hero packs that I’m missing.  I simply refuse to start over again.

yeah and FFG too, thats why they plan to release two novels based on Descent. The idea behind the scene is to waste their time and money with a setting who obviously is dead. I mean logically if no board game is released linked to that universe, i guess thousands of people will rush to buy their copies of the books. It will be some kind of relic.
    RIP Mennara.

I probably can't say much out of respect for confidentiality agreements but the plans for that line are really cool (gotta compete with Gloomhaven somehow) Also when asked:

What's the new "Descent" thing they're releasing? I've basically figured that it's got to either be Descent: Digital Edition (video game treatment of 2E) or Descent: Deluxe Edition (a big box of all the best 2E product, but more streamlined).

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a couple more facts to help with speculation. We already knew that no new D2E physical content was coming out. Whether you consider a streamline "ultimate" edition "new" or not, it's ruled out anyways.

We know it's a GH competitor which D2e already could be. But from this, we could maybe expect a much larger campaign with maybe even 4xp-6xp skills. Also this (more or less) confirms there will be co-op, but I think that was a given.

It's also not just a digital descent.

Overall, this adds to the total hype that Andrew Navarro had in his AMA. Many people keep suggesting small or lateral movements (like a digital 2e, or revised edition) but this reinforces that this new project is beyond the scope of that.

I'm still in the Descent: Journeys in Terrinoth camp. I think openness of where you can go and when will be greatly expanded on from RtL with more "over world" features added than normal tactical combat features. I don't want them to change anything about the actual play-by-play of Descent besides incorporating IA changes.

Quite a bit of Descent's reduced over on Asmodee's US site (the usual prices are showing on FFG but as it transfers you over to the same Asmodee shopfront to complete purchases it may update them to the lower price pre-checkout)

Not the core sets and main expansions though. If you're after something that's out of stock you can 'wishlist' it.

This could mean the way being cleared for the 'new' thing or could just be as it's an older game so sales inevitably beginning to tail off even if it's still selling.

Totally agree.  Wizards of the Coast learned this the hard way thinking they can totally revamp D&D  with 4.0 and tap into to the more casual and/or video game MMORPG crowd.  Instead they ended up pissing off the "Veteran Gamer" who truly supports their products and just about everyone dissed the "new D&D" that was 4.0.  The casual player bought the game initially to check it out but didn't stick around with continued plays or purchases of the expansions. The result was that Pathfinder which was based on D&D 3.5 took over the RPG market as the "Veteran Gamers" flocked to that game and stole the crown away from Wizards of The Coast and D&D in terms of sales. Anyone familiar with RPGs knows that Pathfinder is not a casual friendly game due to its huge ruleset and the "crunchiness" and complexities of its mechanics.  But it became number one because it appealed to the old guard, veteran RPG community not the passerby that D&D 4.0 tried to target. As a result, WOTC got smart, canned 4.0 prematurely and did a hard reset with the release 5.0 that had much more appeal to the old guard and new comers alike. They asked the veteran gamer what they wanted to see in a D&D RPG and designed that game around a ton of feedback. Now D&D 5.0 is on top and dare I say is making RPG gaming cool and trendy.  That would of never happened if they didn't also appeal to the veteran gamer who are devoted to the genre.  WOTC has the best of both worlds now....something FFG is going to need to figure out if they are going to release a viable product with a long shelf life in the hobby miniature wargaming market.....Runewars is not going to cut it.

jopan got a reaction from The Cocky Rooster in Descent 2ed. - Skirmish Rules
We have heroes, lieutenants, tiles (although i would love to have playmats like the ones for Imperial Assault), monsters, treasures.
    Come on FFG!!!!
