  1. I just bought Armada and have a bunch of rules questions after playing my first game. 1. Does nav team (and/or nav command token) allow you to increase your yaw beyond what it is on the card? For example, can the nav team and/or nav command token allow a VSD to have a yaw of 2 for a round? 2. How does overload pulse work? Is the blue crit effect in lieu of a critical damage, or in addition to dishing out a critical hit? 3. Can I use the range ruler to measure distance from an enemy ship before executing my maneuver. It's nice for corvettes to stay at range 3... 4. How does squadron line of sight work? If a squadron is touching the right hull of an opponent, can it shoot any hull it wants? 5. How do ships determine range for attacking squadrons? Is it the blue range ruler, or the distance of 1? 6. If a ship uses its attack against squadrons (instead of attacking a ship), can it use its second attack to attack those squadrons again? 7. How does Tarkin's ability work? Thanks for your time and help! Now off to order some more dice and ships off of amazon
  2. I just played the initial core "tutorial" without squads last night. I like it! Some initial thoughts: - I have a 3x3 mat for X-Wing that works ok for Armada. I had a hard time not getting my corvette and frigate partially off the map since they were going at high speeds. Since my mat is only 3x3, I think I'll modify the rules so that the ship only "flees" if it's entirely off the mat. - Initiative is a huge deal. Being able to shoot before another ship could be life or death. - On round 6 my VSD was down to 0 shields on all hulls. The frigate rolled awful die so the VSD had a couple hp left. The frigate managed to get back to full shields on all hulls (and had full health), but was positioned in such a way that the VSD could shoot it twice at range 1. 6 die plus 1 (token) from VSD front arc took down the frigate's measly 1 side hull shield and blew it up. Love blowing up rebel scum. Too bad the miniatures don't break in half and explode after annihilating them. But then, replacing them every game would get expensive. - Critical hits are nasty. Really nasty. My poor VSD got 2 crits over 2 rounds that decimated its shields. - Finding range on big ships is annoying with the range ruler. I need to find a range ruler pack that includes a 1 range and 2 range ruler. Preferably not cardboard. * Question * are there any pdf guides on ship movement, fleet formation, etc on the forums? I'd like something I can download to my iPad so pdfs work good.
  3. Thanks for all the responses! Looks like Armada has a decent fanbase. I'll be bombarding the rules sub-forum in the near future I'm sure. Gonna be hard to remember "shoot then move" and taking turns activating ships. I think I'll put the fighter squadrons aside initially just to get practice maneuvering the big ships. Gonna need an ISD and some Mon Cal's in the near future...
  4. So I saw Armada on amazon for $58 and decided to nab it. I love X-Wing (I play casually with friends and family), and thought it would be awesome to field some capital ships in a game. Questions: 1 - Can someone provide a link for a good tutorial on youtube? I started one but I didn't find it too helpful. 2 - Are there any challenges switching from X-Wing to Armada? 3 - Any beginner tips? 4 - If playing casually, are there any expansions that should be avoided? 5 - Are there any cooperative campaigns, or "AI" for enemy ships? I can hardly wait to blast some Rebel scum into space dust
  5. $54.60 now. Sure is tempting... But I only play casually and my dining room table isn't big enough for 2 mats I ended up getting Armada for $57.80 instead. I have a feeling I'm going to like Armada a lot FYI - X-Wing TFA Core sets are only $18.98 on amazon right now. Good deal for 3 extra ships.
  6. When can free actions NOT be performed? I'm curious about the following situations: - Ship lands on or passes through an asteroid - Ship overlaps another ship - Ship has stress (from red maneuver or otherwise) - Any other situations that are important? Thanks!
  7. Honestly, I'd suggest giving it a try yourself. I'm not at all a painter (I used to casually paint Games Workshop's LOTR line a little as a kid, but I was honestly pretty horrible) but I picked up some acryllic paints at Wal-Mart this October and had all seven waves painted much to my satisfaction within a month. Honestly, I was amazed at what I did. It's far from professional quality, but it's really something you can still take a lot of pride in, and it's a ton of fun. I'm guessing there are youtube tutorials on it. My issue is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I'm rarely satisfied with work that I do if I know a professional could have done it better. But, anything is probably better than non-painted grey figures.
  8. Great stuff! Thanks! Is there anyone who paints these things for a reasonable price? I wouldn't trust myself to do it right, but I think it would make the game more immersive. Kind of why I like X-Wing so much.
  9. I'm definitely getting Armada some day. My kids get bored after 45 minutes of tabletop gaming, so X-Wing is better for now. I think I'm gonna create an amazon wishlist for Armada and get pieces as they go on sale. I don't get Destiny. Is it a RPG? I've never got into those.
  10. Thanks for the reply Abyss! What are the current "boxed expansions"?
  11. I'm hopeful for Rogue One. I expected TFA to be big on graphics and light on plot. My expectations were met. I mean seriously, how much of Episode IV are you going to directly copy before your film is no longer a reboot? And why did Kylo Ren have to take his mask off? Lost all respect for him after seeing his baby face and long hair. He just needed skinny jeans and all-stars to complete his look...
  12. I've been playing X-Wing casually and love it. I was told to check out Imperial Assault, so I have some noob questions for y'all. 1. What's the youngest age that can play this? I have a couple kids between 6-8 that can play X-Wing ok, as long as their pilots and abilities are straight-forward. Are the rules in IA able to be "simplified"? 2. Can this game be played solo or co-operatively? A co-op campaign against a "AI/script" would be fun for my kids. 3. Are there different "game modes"? 4. If I get the game what are considered "essentials" to start with? 5. I love bounty hunters like Dengar, Boba Fett, IG-88 and Bossk. Do these all come in their own separate "expansions"? 6. Does the game have a lot of replay value if played non-competitively? 7. Is IA coming out with an IOS app in the near future? 8. Does amazon.us have a good price for IA, or are there better websites to purchase from? Thanks for your time and help!
  13. So where do the sequels fall for you? They are not post-Lucas but you left them off... I didn't like Episodes 1 or 2 (why create an annoying Gungan character? ). Episode 3 was good. I grew up on 4-6, so it remains my primary area of SW enjoyment.
  14. Thanks for all the recommendations! Rebellion is on sale on Amazon for $70! I'm going to get it Even if the kids can't handle it yet, they will someday, and I'll be mad if they stop making the game by the time my kids are old enough for it. I'm primarily interested in games that focus on Episodes 4-6. I don't consider any post-Lucas movies to be Star Wars...
  15. I enjoy playing X-Wing with my family and friends, and am wondering what other good Star Wars games are out there. I remember playing SW the Trading Card Game by WOTC (wizards of the coast) when I was younger and liking it a lot. Armada looks interesting, but time consuming and too complicated for my wife and younger kids. I bought SW Risk for my kids, and it was awful. What non-digital Star Wars games are y'all playing besides X-Wing?
  16. *Thread Resurrection* I just discovered: http://s-fear.com/xwing/index.htm I haven't used it yet, but is anyone on the forum familiar with this link vs HotAC? I've downloaded the HotAC files, but haven't gotten around to having them professionally printed yet...
  17. Wanted: - XG-1 Assault Gunboat - Skipray Blastboat Prediction: - Sabine in another ship - Another H-Shaped TIE Repaint
  18. The guide I posted above says that the A-9 is no more maneuverable than the Interceptor. How about 3/3/2/0 ? 2 hull and no shields I felt is just too squishy for the sake of gameplay (i did actually start with that) I am definitely open to going back to that. While the cannons are individually stronger than an X-wing's, there's also half the number, which is why I did 2 instead of 3. As to the justification of a 180 degree firing arc, this comes from the mod that allowed the two weapons to fire at different targets. This wouldn't really do much good if they were both stuck facing forward. Looking at the design schematic for the ship, the engines are placed in such a manner as to allow the cannon to rotate as well Maybe you could attack two targets in arc with 2 die each, or 1 target with 3 die? And I agree that 2 hull is pretty squishy for gameplay.
  19. The guide I posted above says that the A-9 is no more maneuverable than the Interceptor. How about 3/3/2/0 ?
  20. I thought I heard someone say Gunboat when I was browsing the main page threads
  21. From the 'The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels' (1996): "The A-9's weapons consist of two forward firing laser canons which pack more punch that do an X-Wings... a modification kit allows the laser canons to to be independently targeted. This kit includes a servo driver system that can depress the guns up to ninety degrees, making the A-9 capable of performing strafing missions against ground targets". So, it would seem the unique thing about the A-9 is that you can fire-link the laser canons, or have them engage 2 different targets. Which begs the question, how do they engage different targets unless they have a firing arc? EDIT: the guide also says that "the ship is indeed faster than the TIE interceptor, it has been shown to be no more maneuverable, and its hull is actually significantly weaker." * Bold and underline added by me.
  22. I need to find a Star Wars shirt that says "Disney canon sucks! Long live Lucas EU!" Almost none of the plebs would have a clue what my shirt means
