minoru reacted to Hinomura in New Clan Roles + Story Decision
I dedicated the pick to Brad Emon. His reasoning behind not wanting Keeper was a genuine desire to keep the game fun and thriving, and Backhand had the potential to really destroy people's will to play.
Brad was totally willing to embrace being a villain to make this happen, and I have nothing but respect for that.
If there are Scorpion players who aren't willing to be villains, then this may not be the clan for you.
If people wanted a different choice, they had the opportunity to beat out Brad and myself. We finished first and second placed Scorpions at Worlds. I reckon we earned the right to make this choice.

Howdy!
I'm a huge supporter of L5R 5E. I think a lot of the changes from 4E are great, and that the ones that aren't great are either (1) getting there or (2) there for people who play differently than I do. I'm enthusiastically running a 22-person court game that my players are really enjoying. I can't wait to buy a copy of the core. (And I can't wait to buy a copy of this week's Dynasty Pack for the LCG.)
I say all of that because I want you to understand that what I'm about to say comes from a place of genuine support and a general, democratic spirit of thoughtful critique.
The name "Mirumoto Two-Swords School" is really bad.
I understand: you aren't calling anything the "[Family] [Role] School anymore." I've loved all the renames so far. Doji Diplomat, Kakita Duelist? Great. Bayushi Manipulator, Isawa Elementalist? Bring it on. Even the Iuchi Meishodo Master sounds right, if a little clunky.
Mirumoto Two-Swords School is way beyond clunky. It hits like a chainsaw on a rusty guard rail: all teeth and shrieking. I'm not even a Dragon fan. I bleed Kakita; I hate the Mirumoto.
Please change it. Pick a name. You could:
Go with what's there: Mirumoto Niten School. Play with its mystical orientation: Mirumoto Adept School. Play with its wandering-swordsperson aspect: Mirumoto Wanderer School. Emphasize its relationship with the Kakita: Mirumoto Duelist School. Literally anything else. I'm begging you.
Thank you for your time.

minoru got a reaction from Magnus Grendel in Schools and Techniques
As far as I can tell it is really just 2+Rituals (which is frequently not particularly useful)

^He speaks truth here, it may seem like a bit of fluff, but it frequently helps newer players understand what the technique does in narrative terms.

We had this thread about a million times already. You could find it in the original AEG forum, you can find in the FFG LCG forum and doubtless many other L5R fora.
I also said L5R was not bad, you know. That means there are positive examples, for the artwork as well. But even in the 90's they did not go out of their way to actually be inclusive compared to other companies.
I will address the question of characterization at the start of the game a bit however, as that is more interesting than retreading the art discussion. You say the women were made as the equal of the men in the story, but I disagree. It certainly did not start out that way, though it got better over time, it definitely did. Just putting emphasis on the last before you go and make my position more extreme than it actually is.
Of the one's mentioned above, once they actually got story time Matsu Tsuko, Isawa Kaede, Mirumoto Hitomi and Ikoma Tsanuri were very strongly defined by the men in their lives, and it did not go both ways. To elaborate, for the longest time Hitomi's story was just about Yakamo. Actually, I will put it stronger, she was just a side character in Yakamo's story, and it was similar for most of the women in the story back then. The other three women above belong in Toturi's story/harem. No, the boys were very much the stars of the show, and it really took time before the women were developed into actual, stand-alone characters.
Otaku Kamoko was better I believe, but I was never into the Unicorn I must admit and I don't quite remember when her story started getting interesting. Hida O'Ushi, who was also named, came into her own later on as well. A Good Little Wife was from the Ree Soesbee period, I believe. You'll certainly get no hate from me about Kachiko (except her art, most of it was horrid, but whatever). The story of Kachiko and Hoturi was actually fairly balanced, and she had other things going on beyond being hung up in one way or another on her man of choice.

(1) Inclusivity isn't just about gender or about gender balance; to my group, for example, having a signature character who's indisputably q-ueer is HUGE;
(2) celebrating New5R for being inclusive isn't a slam on Old5R? But it's probably worth recognizing that our current Clan Champions are roughly balanced between men and women, that they include a person who is q-ueer, that they include diverse perspectives on marriage, parenthood, and gender roles, and that none of them read as appropriative.
ETA: forgot to say also: advocating for inclusivity isn't just for women (or for any one group advocating for themselves); successfully advocating for inclusivity needs to be intersectional -- which is part of why I'm showing up for this.

In my opinion the Clan Wars era was the most iconic time period, so I'm honestly thrilled to have the timeline rebooted. Now we get to mess up a different timeline!

minoru reacted to Doji Satevis in Sooo...Doji Hotaru
I cannot believe I have just read a post in which someone is in all seriousness attempting to argue that if a character is not acting in a (stereotypically) (to that person's biased point of view) "feminine" manner, then that character must actually really be male despite what we've been told and shown.
This is already getting old.

minoru reacted to Drudenfusz in Sooo...Doji Hotaru
Well, first Hotori also used a Naginata, I mean just look at most of his old card images, you will find quite a few with him holding such a weapon.
Second, I think your notion on how you look at female characters are somewhat sexist. Sure, Hotaru might not behave like you imagine a proper lady to behave, but I think her behavour is not totally outlandish either.
Shizue also had a cat already in the canon under AEG. Also, cats have been pets in feudal japan, so I see nothing wrong why she should not have a cat.

minoru got a reaction from Moto Subodei in [RPG] Shugenja (huh!) what are you good for?
So while I absolutely love playing a shugenja I will be one of the first to admit they can be severely overpowered, specifically in versatility, there is no way a courtier or bushi can hope to be relevant to as many situations as a well-rounded shugenja. My solution that stays more-or-less within the lore (Specifically all the fictions and novels): Restrict shugenja to casting spells of their element. Within their element a rank 5 shugenja should be powerful, just as a rank 5 bushi should dominate any battlefield they stand on, or a rank 5 courtier should master any court they are in. So I don't really have a problem with the power level of spells, just the fact that a rank 4-5 shugenja with the right spells can be amazing at everything.
