  1. I called over there this afternoon and spoke to someone that said 1) they just got a huge shipment of X Wing in and the owner will have it processed and ready for sale next week and 2) they are planning to bring back regular X Wing nights starting in January. I'll be playing. I know of two other guys in the area who are buying Core Sets this month and two others who like playing but don't intend to purchase it yet. I have enough ships to loan them should they want to play. Looks like we're getting the community back up and running!

Is anyone playing at Adventurer's Guild on Saturday January 9th? I'll likely be flying 4 Rookie X Wing w/ Proton Torpedoes to learn the ropes at my first tournament.

  2. I'm in the process of painting two bedrooms and redoing a kitchen. Eventually I'll be clearing out my basement and perhaps next year, I'll build a sweet gaming table. Until then, I need to do something about my X Wing set up. I keep everything in two containers and I have a 36" x 36" white foam board that I play on. Eventually we're going to paint it. For now, I just throw it on the floor to play. It's killer on my knees and I spend so much time setting up and taking down everything, it would be excellent to leave it all set up in a corner of the basement. I can't find a folding table online that's big enough. I see plenty of 36x36, but I'm going to want something bigger for pilots, upgrades, damage deck etc. Ideally I think a 48x48 table would be perfect. I have only found round 60" tables. Any idea on what to do?

  3. Wow I'm glad someone responded... I stopped in War and Piece and they said there was no local community, just the three TIE punishes left on their shelves. Six feet under games said they aren't hosting a tournament this year after zero players turned out last year. The comic shop by the train station said they're not hosting events either. Both six feet and ye comic shop said they sell Xwing products regularly and order several times a month, but they haven't seen a success with game nights.

I called adventurers guild and they say that they expect 8-12 players. I've just started in this game and only played a few games. I'm thinking of flying a simple build at that tournament to learn the ropes. So you plan on going? Are you local? I'm in Lancaster City.

  4. Okay,, I tested it out. The Rebel list died quick to this list. The Y wing was taken out before firing an ion cannon. Wedge was next in exchange for Dark Curse and some damage to another tie. Luke hung on a bit while the swarm gathered but ultimately died after he took out another TIE and I flew a third one off the board. Howlrunner, Mauler Mithel and Winged Gundark thought it was funny. This shows me that I don't know how to fly yet (I flew the TIE off the board trying to turn around and I flew the Y Wing straight into the jaws of a Howlrunner swarm on turn 1. I was much better with the X Wings which means I will drop the Y and practice with those... I might even go XXXX. Thanks everyone.

  5. Alright guys, here's what I think I'll fly for the tournament. I've got some games behind me flying Luke and Wedge and I love the idea of a Y-wing so I think I'll start with this list. Alternatively, I could put Garven in there with R7-T1 and go for an initiative bid. I currently have everything I'll need for this list, so I can practice with it a few times before the tournament on January 9th. I'll mostly be playing against myself for practice, with tie swarms on the other end of the table. Any ideas on how to fly this list properly? I'd Assume that I would 'tank' with the Y-wing around the edge of the asteroids while my X-wings try to get off shots on the ties. I'm very hopeful of getting someone to ion out of play or into an asteroid.

  6. Release a rogue squadron pack to promote rogue one next year. Two custom painted t-65's with new pilots and cards including

Unique title for t-65 "Red Leader" grants an additional attack (or maybe a defense for balance) die to t-65's within a certain range.

Titled pilots may also buff other t-65's.

This would encourage fielding multiple t-65 without buffing any of the current pilots (Luke, wedge etc) on their own to throw off meta balance.

I'm new and haven't familiarized myself with everything yet, but I think it works to the best of my knowledge and it's awesome thematically.

  7. Hello! I've posted a few times as I've gotten into the game and my signature includes a list of available expansions. I'm not opposed to purchasing another one or two, but I'd like to largely rely on what I already own. A semi-local shop just announced a tournament on January 9th and I'd like to play. Seeing as how I've only flown X wings before in a real game, I might just come with a 3-4X build and fly casual, learning as I play my first tournament. What do you guys think?

I also considered purchasing a falcon expansion and running evading Corran alongside two ionned up y-wings. If I could get two TLT I would upgrade the Y's to put some damage up. On the ther hand, I don't have time to practice flying those ships and I feel comfortable with Xwings already.

Any advice for my first tournament?

  8. So it seems like there's some interest around this list, but some different ideas as to how to use the Y-wings. What if we TLT both of them? That might make them threatening enough to cause your opponent to have to choose between them and Corran. I love Ion control but I just don't feel like they'll be enough damage output in this list without the TLT. Maybe the two TLT Y-wing will create a no-fly-zone for map control.

  9. I like the idea but dont like the Flechette torps, now im curious as to the possibilities

Yeah the torps were thrown with leftover points, they are for that first range 3 shot before ion comes in range. Hopefully able to take down anyone who could dodge Corran before they're a nuisance. I'm very much open to suggestion. I haven't bought a second y-wing yet, and I'm considering getting the most wanted package because of the vale and new cards. Not to mention z95's

  10. I'm just researching the meta... I like the idea of the jousting Corran horn, but I wanted something tanking to pair him with that could contribute to map control. How do you think this list would work?

    Corran Hogs (100)

    Gold Squadron Pilot (27)

Ion Cannon Turret (5), Flechette Torpedoes (2), R7 Astromech (2)

    Gold Squadron Pilot (27)

Ion Cannon Turret (5), Flechette Torpedoes (2), R7 Astromech (2)

    Corran Horn (46)

    Veteran Instincts (1), R2-D2 (4), Fire Control System (2), Engine Upgrade (4)

  11. Thank you both. I'm good at organizing events and I'm pretty outgoing. I was thinking of asking the FLGS owners to ask everyone who purchases X Wing if they'd be interested in receiving emails inviting them to tournaments in the area. I'm pretty sure that because this game appeals to entry-level miniature players (I had never thought of playing minis in my life) with such a low investment compared to other minis games ($100 can get you flying in a tournament) the game attracts more casual players than tournament players. I would have a hard time shelling out the $100 for capital ships at a store unless I was playing tournaments there, but as far as the rest, the price difference is worth building the relationship to me.

  12. I'm in Lancaster PA, a little over an hour from Philly, Harrisburg and Baltimore. I could easily play anywhere within an hour or two drive.

Yes, I know Target carries them, but I'm not urgently looking. I had some time to kill and I was driving by the store. I'm trying to build a relationship with these stores and foster tournament community. I think players would come. I haven't played at a game store in over a decade, and that was Magic Drafts. What are prizes typically like? Would it be reasonable to charge a $15 entry fee and the winner gets a choice of small-ship expansion packs? I don't know, I'm trying to think of how to build this community.

  13. There are 4 stores within a half hour drive of my house. 3 of them carry X Wing, 2 of them regularly stock it and re-order a few times a month. I went in to one of these two in hopes of picking up a FA Core to scratch my Poe itch after seeing the film. Most of his selection was depleted except for two Raiders, a Tantine and several E-Wing's and Punishers. I bought the last Y-Wing because I've wanted to fly it in my list. We talked about what it would look like to put a tournament together. Both him and the other store have had success selling the ships, but can't seem to draw people in for games. One of them ran a tournament kit from FFG last year, and not a single player showed up. Despite this they seem to sell ships very well, even without the movie buzz. Maybe this is the reason for the merger? To try and get more people into the stores and thus encountering local players?

I'd love to find some other players in my area, I mostly play against myself and my one friend who borrows my ships.

  14. === AXE ===

Jake takes a focus from Garven. Corran jousts

    100 points Pilots

    ------

    Jake Farrell (30) A-Wing (24), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Push the Limit (3), Outmaneuver (3)

    Corran Horn (41) E-Wing (35), R2-D2 (4), Expert Handling (2)

    Garven Dreis (29) X-Wing (26), R7-T1 (3)

If I had the New core Set, Falcon and Starviper I would swap out...

    Jake's outmaneuver for Autothruster's

Corran's Expert Handling for Engine Upgrade

    Garven's R7-T1 for BB-8

Alternatively, when I buy a Y-wing Expansion I might Swap out Garven's 29 points for

    Gold Squadron Pilot (29) Y-Wing (18), R2-F2 (3), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Hull Upgrade (3)

Corran is a self-healing, hard hitting jouster. Love it.

I'd like to somehow give Jake a target lock. There's something magical about swooping in with an A wing for a range 1 target lock.

I can't decided if Garven's focus ability is too gimmicky (he'll rarely be that close to Jake after the beginning)

Maybe the Y wing would be more useful, it would certainly last longer while my jousters do the pew-pew. Plus the control gain...

What do you guys think? I'm looking at the synergy and I like it, but I'm afraid of being picked off one by one.

None of these ships will fly together very often. Thoughts?

  15. I'm right there with you, 77. I just recently bought my first Core Set. After much deliberation, I bought the new (blue) TFA Core Set for a couple reasons:

    1) You will eventually need the updated damage deck if you ever want to play competitively. FFG may update the old (red) Core Set eventually but there is plenty of old stock to get through first. No one knows for sure.

    2) After reviewing the ships online, I liked the stat line of the T70 and Tie/fo better than the originals. That topic is still very much up to debate but it made sense to me.

My next planned purchased is the red Core. Different ships and can you really be playing X-Wing if Luke and R2D2 aren't at least in the hangar bay? Plus I agree with what many say about needing more templates and dice. I assume that as I gather more friends into the game, I will be supplying most/all components for at least a while.

This is precisely why I bought the old core sets, while realizing that tournament play would require at the least a new core set purchase. It has been pretty simple to introduce my 20's/30's friends to the game with the old characters that we're all familiar with. If it ever become so committed to play tournaments, instead of in my basement, the investment in a new core set (or several of them depending on the cards) will be the last of my expenses in this game. For now, we're learning with the originals.

Though I agree the new stat line looks sweet. I'm thinking of picking up a core set just for BB8 or whatever.

  16. I don't want to double post, but I figured that I would update every on my progress. I've played a few games with my friend John and several against myself. I'm finishing graduate school in the next few weeks, so I will have some down time. For now, I find that playing a round, even on my own, helps to curb the stress between coming home from work and hitting the books for the evening. I've expanded my collection to 3 original core sets and 8 expansions (x wing, tie, rebel ace, imperial ace, hwk, lambda, e wing, tie advanced) but I've not yet fielded most of the pilots/ships. With our limited time (my friend is applying to doctoral programs with an application deadline of the end of the year) we have taken to practicing with the ships that we've learned so far. We typically play the following match up:

2 Tie Fighter (Obsidian Squadron Pilot)

    1 Dark Curse

    1 Night Beast

    VS

2 Red Squadron Pilots (both w/ R2-D2* and Proton Torpedoes)  *Yes i know, double unique. We just wanted to learn the mechanics as simply as possible*

We're playing on about half the normal size map with half the amount of asteroids placed. Typically, Rebels win. We're downgrading both the R2 units and the torpedoes next game in hopes of balancing our practice further. We'll keep the point value even. We're also creating a 3x3 play surface from foam board ($10 at Michael's) because we're noticing that it would help to give the TIE room to boost away and regroup before they come in for another attack. Once we're more free with our time, in January, we will have some bigger 100 pt battles and invite his brother and father to team up with us. I plan to by the Falcon & Slave 1, Y Wing & Interceptor as well as a Most Wanted packages.

If people are interested, I will update this post periodically. If not, I'll just let it bury itself in the forum. Thanks for all of your support in helping me get into this game. I've reached out to local shops, but there don't seem to be any organized tournaments in Lancaster PA.

  17. You'll get different advice. If you're playing casually, get whoever feels fun. If you're playing competitively, get at least 1 of the newer core sets. They have slightly ipdated some cards as well as updated the damage deck which will become standard for tournament play. The pilots and ships are completely different, which will allow you to expand your collection by buying 1 of each. I ignored this advice and purchasesd the original because I liked the look of the ships better. I'm just playing at home with some friends, so that works for me.
