I agree completely. I believe that X wing is designed as an entry game to miniatures (comparitvely low cost to start up and fly competitive list, easy rules, Star Wars brand, pre painted etc) for Star Wars fans. I absolutely love the game, and I play regularly between work and the gym for 3 hours in 3, 45 minute, rounds every Wednesday at our FLGS. And that's it. I don't touch it other than that. Half my shop are guys like me, and the other half play Saturday tournaments. Notably, all get tournament players are college age of just after and single. The the rest of us are homeowners, married etc. I would love to play in Saturday tournaments, but by the time they start ~12pm the day is half over as far as I'm concerned. I recognize that there is a gamer crowd that is willing to devote all afternoon and evening to playing, but many of us (I believe an even larger percentage of the target player base) is unwilling to devote that time. I know that at my shop, which is just beginning to support X wing as of January, of the 8 of us that have started playing there, 3 play in Saturday tournaments regularly, 1 did it once and for the rest of us the timing is prohibitive. I'm just in a phases of life where my free time is Saturday mornings. Hunting, golf, screwing around in the tool shed, first thing on Saturday. If registration were at 7am, and first round at 8am, if sign up tomorrow. That said, I respect that others are in a different phase of life, but even when I was in college and competed in tournaments, weigh in and registration ended at 6am. First race was 6:45. Maybe it's just what I'm used to? Well constructed and respectful thoughts?

I know that Adv Sensors on a B Wing is a given (in part because of how good it simply is and in part because long ago Paul Heaver said he would never fly one without it) but I've recently flown Keyan in a list with Wedge and Luke where I couldn't fit Adv Sensors in so I gave him PTL and FCS. I have to say, in my stress meta... he holds up well. He doesn't even require actions to get a target lock and an offensive focus. Keyan also loves FCS. And I love Keyan.

You got me thinking... This list could be fun. Right turns and movement control could keep you pivoting on a dime and firing every round. The Z flies separate and flanks. Alternatively you could give the B's tractor beam and trade the Z for an A. Or drop the flanker and buff the B's. I'd take the flanker though.

I can't figure out how to delete this quote portion...
I fly XXB regularly at our local scene and I'm planning to swap out Keyan (low 30's just isn't enough points for him to shine) for either Wes or Poe once the most Hunter drops so I can use adaptability.. I prefer PTL on Wedge with the BB8 shenanigans. Both Wes and Poe have a sick native ability, so I don't feel like I'll miss out by bumping their PS up with adaptability in the EPT spot. That would leave everyone's PS at 9 helping me maneuver and shoot as I please. I haven't decided if I'll run Luke or Wes at 32 points, but here is my suggestion for a viable XXX build. I'd take Wedge, Poe (sorry but if you want another Regen ship, Poe is the best caddy for R5-P9) and your pick of Wes or Luke (I'm going to try Wes) from the list below. I'll be flying this version of all Ps-9 Wedge, Poe & Luke/Wes. I Hope this encourages you.

How often does your wedge live long enough to Regen shields? I'd suggest my favorite way to fly wedge- PTL. His offense is deadly with -1agility and R1 4 Dice focused and target locked. Pair him w/ either generic R2 for surprising greens (that 2-hard is nice) or BB-8 for pre movement PTL shenanigans to alleviate stress. You could even throw engine upgrade on there (you'd come out 2 points less compared to your build) to allow wedge to barrel roll and the boost for position or the traditional TL and Focus combo. I think you'd get several more turns firing shots with wedge before he goes down. And he will go down.
-
Honestly, my plans for this awesome upgrade are way more interested in the -agility than the movement options. That alone is worth a point and an attack in the right list.
-
So is the consensus that the defender would NOT roll for damage when landing on an asteroid from a tractor beam? You'd just be setting him up for the next turn to do it to himself? Similar to how you CANNOT fly him off the board, but can point him at it giving him no choice the following turn.
I recognize that my herd mentality list won't be the most competitive, but I will have a blast flying it! I'm actually more concerned about high Ps Aces than I am large ships. That many red dice combined with all the stress/control should make quick work of low agility large ships and shut down action-relient evading shenanigans (in looking at you, dash and Han) but I'm more concerned about Poe/soontir floating around behind me after the initial engagement.
-
Most of my understanding comes from the release articles for the Imperial Veterans and the Mist Hunter, both the packs that will include this exciting new upgrade. I am under the impression that 1) the interaction between a ship and an asteroid occurs just as it normally would. If a ship passes through or lands on an asteroid, or if it passes through or lands on it on the next turn, it rolls for damage. I would imagine that 3) the same interactions take place with debris fields. I am reasonably certain it has been stated that 2) No, you may not force a ship off the board with a tractor beam.
I am looking forward to flying this....

Yes, I am this guy at my local shop. I've spent considerably less money on X Wing, and I have no intention of attending all-day tournaments or playing at a competitive level. However, I am a regular at our weekly casual night where we play 2-3 games. I've settled into an older list (Wedge, Luke and Keyan in his B-Wing) that isn't too terribly expensive to put together and performs better than .500. I typically fly against some popular lists, and I don't feel out of the running. I can only remember 2 games where I lost horribly, and that was more due to my poor flying than my list. I would go into my list more, but that would defeat the point which is to fly what you love. Mess around with your models and their dials, figure out what you enjoy flying and build a list out of it. After you take it for a few casual games, tweak it and test it again. Have fun and fly casual.

I am very much looking forward to flying four omicron pilots, each with tactician. Two with ion cannon and two with tractor beam. I call it "Herd Mentality"

My family and I are moving to Lancaster from Iowa and I was wondering if there was any Xwing action going on in the area?
While you posted this I was playing at the weekly X wing night at war and pieces in Lancaster city. Looking forward to seeing you there.

-
This is actually fantastic! My family and I are moving to Lancaster from Iowa and I love Xwing. We'll be living downtown, close to the train station. Which comic stire is near there? And which one has the regular games? Thanks!
There's a comic book store within sight of the the train station, on McGovern.. They carry X wing and restock each week. There's a game store a bit further south, in the central market mall (small shopping center between market st and Queen st) and they carry it as well and host X wing nights twice a week. There are two more of us active on the boards who live in the city and another couple within 15 minute drive.
When do you settle in?

I bought a defender for predator to put on wedge, but then I had an idea. TL:DR defender is super mobile (all green straights and banks to shed PTL stress and its white 4K) and has both two actions and two attacks per turn in arc (assuming one of those actions was a focus) plus Rex's native ability.

Boba will see a maneuver at the beginning of the activation phase so both ships can adjust accordingly. In combat he fires a TL HLC and the second he boosts past and fired four dice range 1 put his butt, hopefully out of arc triggering outmaneuver (that does trigger w/ his rear arc, right? Ion bombs give extra control of needed.
Do you think this can take the meta? Suggestions?

Was the falcon the obvious target from turn one? I'd have assumed everyone would hang up, knowing they could t take it down alone later on. I was thinking that I'd want to fly this list...

I just attended my first casual night this week, I'm looking at playing regularly on Wednesday evenings 2-3 games. Between work, graduate school, working on a new house and preparing for our first child (early May) that's about the time I have.

Shout out to our FLGS, War and Pieces in Lancaster PA who just announced casual X Wing nights. Shenry and I were the only two to show up for the inaugural 'Casual' night. (my friend cancelled last minute) but Shenry brought a friend who watched and there were a handful of Magic-Drafters watching intently by the second game. I've included a short battle report (no pictures, but if people are interested I will include them for next week's) and my take-away from the evening. I'm interested to see Shenry's perspective. Please comment with any thoughts or suggestions as we learn to fly casual...

I flew the rebels slowly, straight into the center of the board while his imperials banked in from my far left corner. I had difficulty flying Biggs at the back of my formation,as his pilot skill is low and I had a hard time keeping him close enough to trigger without crashing. My opponent flew Jax too hastily, opening him up for a broadside shot right between two asteroids. On the first round of combat, both Luke and Wedge had Range 1 shots, which took care of Jax completely. The next round, Vader unloaded his concussions missiles into Biggs and the remaining Squint hard turned toward my the damaged X Wing (now coming in from my upper right) and had took advantage of my inability to fly correctly. Biggs fell as fast as Jax did and the game looked a bit more even. Darth took some slight damage from Luke, at a distance, and the volleys ended.
Knowing that his ships were out of position, I 4k turned both Wedge and Luke (Luke took the damage from an asteroid and recovered it with a green maneuver the following turn) and cleared my stress/took target locks on the following round. Wedge sent warning shots out towards Vader at Range 3. The following turn saw the interceptor fall and in the ext couple of rounds I was able to focus down Vader with little difficulty.
Both my opponent and I are new to X wing, and we both made crucial errors with pilots that require skill to maneuver (Biggs and Jax) that cost us our respective ships early on. Other than that, I learned that I shouldn't be trying to fly ships that require such good formation flying (Biggs should be in range 1 of friendly ships but at range 3 of enemy ships plus he has a low pilot skill) so Biggs will 'grounded' for awhile.
The second game, my opponent took up a list that was more familiar to him. He had graciously offered to play Imperials on the first game as I was learning to play (it was my first 100 point game) and he wanted to try out a new squad on me. He switched back to rebels for the second game with a Han flying his Falcon. Chewie was on board as a co-pilot as well. Poe Dameron flew alongside the falcon and demonstrated his ability to talon roll (that pesky maneuver) all over the place.
Hearing terrifying tales about both of these ships, I was nervous for this game. I think my nerves got a hold of me as I played very defensively the entire time. I switched targets, taking whichever presented itself rather than sticking to a plan of attack. I got through the Falcon's shields quickly. Wedge's agility shut-down came in handy. My opponent focus fired Luke because he knew that if he took one shot at him, he better finish him off. Luke fell quickly when both of his defensive rolls were completely blank. We later realized, we should have had Biggs take those hits, but we forgot he was on the board. There were a couple of these 'oops' moments where we decided the outcome by rolling a red dice to determine who won the 'do-over' decision. Casual games are casual. Friendly players are friendly.
Poe was anything but, talon-rolling all over the place. He eventually fell to my remaining pair of X wings while the falcon came back into the fight. For a moment, I thought that I t might be able to come back from losing Luke so quickly. My hopes were dashed though as I accidentally flew Wedge into an asteroid when he had a Range 1 shot on the falcon. Biggs went down, Wedge followed shortly after. The falcon had 5 hull points remaining.
I learned a lot from my first time playing, and I was especially glad to introduce the game to a handful of shop regulars and very interested spectators. I purchased a Tie Defender because I thought it had a copy of Engine Upgrade and Predator. While it did had Predator, I guess I had mistaken Engine Upgrade for Outmaneuver. No matter, the model is pretty sweet. My next purchase will probably be a falcon, but I think I need to practice a bit first. We went 1:1 on our first X-Wing Casual night and we're looking forward to next week! The best thing though, was making a new X-Wing friend who lives two blocks from my house and words the same hours I do. Once this paper is finished, I'm anticipating a lot of practice time.
By dropping Biggs, swapping out predator onto Wedge and sliding outmaneuver to Luke, I've freed up 28 points. What to use them on? The rebels have so many solutions. Dutch w/ Ion for control? FCS B wing? I'm not confident in flying the Y-Wing yet, and I'm not sure about a single B wing without many upgrades. I think I've decided on a fast little ship that can function very well independently to offer some flanking support for Wedge and Luke. All kitted out (with the cards I already own) he comes in at 28 points. I won't have to worry so much about flying in formation, because he'll be off on his own most of the time. Please offer your feedback on this battle report and my tweaked up squadron. I'll be sure to include pictures next time! Here will be my new build as I learn to fly casual:

Alright, you asked for it. I've been practicing and reading up the meta for weeks (I watched a few games at the nationals/worlds level including Paul Heaver's most recent win) and I've made some contacts in the local community. A game store in town is starting 'learn to play' X Wing nights this month before launching into casual tournaments. I'll be there tonight along with my friend who just bought an original core set and a Slave 1. There are a dozen lists that I'd love to fly, but based on my collection and in-experience I've decided on this 3-ship X Wing list to teach me to fly. Each ship is self-synergistic. I'll likely buy a ship at the event to support the store's efforts at creating an X wing community, I'm just not sure which one I'll decide on! Any suggestions (particularly on how to fly this or any list, especially at the start) would be appreciated.
Luke and Wedge both do their things. Wedge has a way to clear stress with R2 and Luke has a chance to decrease agility like Wedge does natively. Garven brought his R5-K6 along to help regenerate target locks to keep the focus rolling and he's got a hull upgrade cause it fit the points and he had no other defensive. I'm considering moving that to Wedge to give him some more protection, because he'll certainly be a target. I'm pretty good flying X Wings compared to other ships. I've never hit an asteroid in one, for starters! I'll post a link to a bat-rep on the other forum later this week. What do you all think?

'Regen' Luke has offensive/defensive buff.
Wedge gets stressed so he has greens.

I'll be at the Guild on the 9th, should be a good time.
War and Pieces just made two facebook groups: "War and Pieces Xwing" and "Lancaster City Xwing" - probably a good idea to join them to get updates on when people are going to start playing. You can join them by clicking on the links from today's post on their facebook page.
I think I'm skipping the guild on the 9th in favor of playing at war and pieces tomorrow. I really only have time to do one this week with a 20 page paper due Sunday that I haven't started yet. W&P is more my speed (beginner) right now and it's close... I want to build a local community around a shop. I'll probably buy a ship tomorrow to support their efforts at hosting X wing.
-
I'll be there tomorrow along with a friend of mine who will be learning the game and unboxing his first core set
-
I'm pretty new myself and I've started a friend playing. We did...
Rookie pilot w/ proton torpedoes vs 2 mauler Mithel and dark curse
Use the backside of any standard board game to play on
X2 rookie pilot w/ proton torpedoes vs 4 named ties
Use two game boards
X3 named X wing pilots vs 6 named ties
Worked well. Do not put r2d2 on anything under a 100 pt list. He breaks the game.

Help me fly T-65s better
in X-Wing
Posted · Edited by lunimus
I run t-65 each week at my store and I am consistently 2:1, losing mostly to the Saturday tournament players who play at Wednesday casual for practice. I run the following list.
First Casual List (100)
Wedge Antilles (33) - X-Wing
Push The Limit (3), R2 Astromech (1), Integrated Astromech (0)
Luke Skywalker (33) - X-Wing
Veteran Instincts (1), R2-D2 (4), Integrated Astromech (0)
Keyan Farlander (34) - B-Wing
Push The Limit (3), Fire Control System (2)
I believe the key to t-65 right now is to move slowly forward and refusing to try and turn after the firefight. After the initial engagement, k-turn and get ready for another approach. I'm considering switching out Someone for Wes +adaptability to shoot first and get better mileage out of wedge, but I can't figure out whether it's Keyan or Luke. Wedge shreds for the two turns he's alive. Your mileage may vary, as I said, I play at a dedicated casual night. Half of us are practicing for tournaments and the other half only play those three games each week with the same lists because we know them.
Glad to see others keeping the t-65 in the game! I'm the only one in my shop who is flying them and I love them!
