RenanBarcellos reacted to RavenwolfXIII in What about Titles like GOT LCG?
I actually 100% am behind this, and they're pretty easy to impliment - the mechanics translate pretty easily, just use different names like "Shogun" or "Emerald Champion". I actually did this a while back while trying to jank some multiplayer rules together - when I get home I'll post them here. Might be a few hours though. I lied, I found them on my laptop; forgive my awful writing (And they may need to be tweaked to fit into the new L5R Multiplayer rules):
Titles are distributed during each Dynasty Phase, just before the action window opens (Effectively 1.3.1), following the distribution rules found in the AGoT LCG rulebook. (Shuffle face down, remove one randomly. In a three-player game, two titles are removed at random; in a six-player game no titles are removed. Then, in Player order, each person secretly selects one available title. after all players have selected, all titles are revealed. Player Order for title selection is clockwise, starting with the player with the Imperial Favor, or the first player marker if nobody has the Imperial favor.) Titles are returned during each regroup phase, just after rings are returned. (Effectively 5.4.1) Title abilities: Supports - If a player’s title supports another title, that player cannot declare conflicts against the player holding the title that he or she supports. Rivals - If you win a conflict against the player holding the title you rival, you may gain 1 fate. (Limit once per round.) =================== Imperial Advisor Supports: None Supported by: None Rivals: None This Title adds +1 glory to your side during each glory count. INTERRUPT: When another player declares a conflict, you may select a different player. That player now becomes the target of the conflict. (The attacking player may choose which of the new defending player's province to attack, but may not change conflict type, ring type, or declared attackers.) Shogun Supports: Emerald Champion Supported by: Imperial Chancellor Rivals: Imperial Treasurer, Jade Champion You may declare a second MIL conflict this round against a different opponent. Other players may not gain MIL from the Imperial Favor this round in conflicts with you. Imperial Treasurer Supports: Jade Champion Supported by: Emerald Champion Rivals: Shogun, Imperial Chancellor When you reveal this Title, gain 1 fate and place 1 fate onto a character you control that has no fate. Emerald Champion Supports: Imperial Treasurer Supported by: Shogun Rivals: Imperial Chancellor, Jade Champion When you reveal this Title, draw 1 card. Jade Champion Supports: Imperial Chancellor Supported by: Imperial Treasurer Rivals: Emerald Champion, Shogun When you reveal this Title, claim the Imperial Favor. When you declare a conflict against your rival, you may gain an additional honor. Imperial Chancellor Supports: Shogun Supported by: Jade Champion Rivals: Emerald Champion, Imperial Treasurer You may declare a second POL conflict this round against a different opponent. Other players may not gain POL from the Imperial Favor this round in conflicts with you. -

That was carryover from 1e GoT:LCG. It may have even been carryover from the CCG.
I like this idea though.

Strategically may be a good idea, but i think this end up not being fun for anyone

The scoring board and win conditions were really cool in war of honor too. Very "Race for the Throne". I like the title idea too: left hand, right hand, underhand, voice, dark heart anyone? Of course there is always Imperial Chancellor, Imperial Treasurer, Shogun, Emerald Champion, Jade Champion, Imperial Advisor, Voice of the Emperor... could be very cool

RenanBarcellos got a reaction from Nheko in [Focus Topic] School Abilities (Week 8)
Mirumoto Two Swors School is awesome. The mechanics really fit the theme of using off-hand sword both to attack and defend.
I like almost all school abilities. But i think that, while the Shiba Guardian is working now (being 1 use per scene) is not a very fun school ability. It's a good effect but i don't see Way of the Phoenix defining a Shiba Guardian. And i don't know, but a Guardian shouldn't be better at... guarding? The Shiba Guardian should be one of the best yojimbo of Rokugan, but their school ability don't quite make them more able to protect their charges, to put themselves in harm's way to give life to their shugenja.
Also i would really like if there was a School Ability at School Rank 3. I guess that a good samurai will be at least rank 3, and he should have something more defining of his shool. There's too much ground between School Ability and Mastery Ability. Something between those two would be nice.

RenanBarcellos reacted to WHW in Beta Rules Update v3.0 and Preview Material
A Big Bad Tetsubo is about to crush you, dealing 8 Fatigue, and pushing you into Incapacitated; instead of trying to avoid it, you brace for impact and end up with a concussion (Crit created Injury), but you still can fight for another turn.

Have you tried out the Strife in practice? Strife, like most of systems in Beta, needs to be actually seen in motion in order to see how they work in the grand scheme of the game.
I have seen more than 24 hours of the actual gameplay with full Strife rules - most of it as a GM, but also 8 hours of being a player. Strife, in practice, is much different from what you are suggesting. There is no "random emotional swings". The emotional moments that actually happen - instead of being internalized as rising tension of accumulating Strife - are players choice. Strife gives you an opportunity to work something Roleplayingly interesting into the current situation, but it does not force anything. Even Outbursts.
The "Dinner made me go mad" thing is not something that happens. You wont go from 0 Strife to Outburst in a single roll. The maximum Strife you can gain from a roll - without triggering Anxieties and such - is number of the dice you keep. For majority of characters, this will be potential of 2 to 4 Strife swing, and this assumes that you DECIDED to pick dice with Strife. You don't have to. You get to keep UP to your Ring.
Strife gives you a choice, and an opportunity - are you humble, and only pick the 2 successes you needed, dropping the juicy "Strife+Cool Result" dice? Roleplaying wise, if you see a cool idea for how to represent the Strife gained right here, right now, you can go for it - but are not forced to do so. Or maybe you are a maverick daredevil who does things in Fire Stance and actively hunts for Strife, and rides that train for extra successes?
Choice is yours.
Making dinner will rarely give you an Outburst, unless you were already in a range of it happening - which is X =Composure+1 - Current Strife. X has to be a number of dice you want to keep. The little swings of +2 will accumulate over time, sure, but because its a build up, you will be prepared for the possibility of it happening.
You also shed Strife quite often - at end of each Scene, and you can spend 1 or 2 Opportunities (depending on the Ring of your roll, but you ALWAYS have at least "2 Opportunity for 2 Strife" option) each roll to calm down, reducing the Strife by 2. Again, it's your choice. Strife is random on a scope of a single roll, but it is not random at all in zoomed out perspective of entire game sessions. Dice just present options, and leave you with the choice of what are you going to do with them. If you are attempting to make dinner when at 10 Strife, expect the Outburst : P.
Note that Outbursts can be as loud as a villain doing an evil laughter as their plan comes to fruition, and as silent as a bushi looking to a side with a visible hint of guilt in their eyes, as they are suffering a Compromise and losing Honor to feeling of internal shame. Nothing forces you to challenge the dinner to a battle of life and death. It might cause you to reflect on your entire day instead, making you feel like a pathetic excuse of a samurai, or maybe induce a jolt of melancholy.
"Oni eating my family unphases me" is factually incorrect, as Strife can be gained or lost through narrative events. Though there is no value suggested for "how much Strife after witnessing Oni doing my family in", thats true.
Situations where swings of emotions are possible, yes, and they are Conflicts - where something is at stake, at least two opposing forces are bashing their heads oer their objectives, and STRIFE INTENSIFIES simply due to sheer volume of rolls. So yes, it is possible to have a rush of emotions while defending your life from a pack of wolves, and it is possible to quickly lose your cool during a heated argument. While during narrative scenes you can be relatively relaxed about rolls and can spend leftover opportunities for Strife reduction or not cry much about keeping only the minimal number of dice needed to do the job, conflicts are a different beast.
In conflicts, you have a time pressure (the opposing side might reach their objective quicker!) and performance pressure. Do you push yourself and take that Explosion+Strife hoping that the extra point of damage or rhetorics will bring you closer to victory? Do you spend these 2 opportunities to inflict a crit, or calm yourself? Do you push your friends to their limits, decreasing their next TN by 1, but also bestowing Strife upon them?
Conflicts will make you see the edge of an Outburst. Conflicts will ask you to make sacrifices and to choose what is more important to you right here, right now.
Conflicts are a blast, and Strife is a major part of that, as it functions as a pressure valve, and a rope you can use to hang yourself - or your opposition.

RenanBarcellos reacted to shosuko in Misconceptions about Strife and Outbursts
Not a misconception - Strife takes away control of your PC
Correct - no more than damage, or any other game influence. You can't narrate your character to be a master of void if the character sheet doesn't support it. You can't narrate perfect, social stoicism if your character sheet doesn't support it.
Juggling what you control, and what you can't control is the essence of drama and story.

RenanBarcellos reacted to WildKnight in Misconceptions about Strife and Outbursts
Are we ignoring, in all of this, that previous editions had characters making Honor Rolls as a last ditch effort to avoid certain things, and if those rolls were failed, the character went in for the behavior regardless.
In my 30 or so years of gaming, PCs being "forced" to feel or do certain things has been in systems more often than not. No human being is completely in control of their emotions at all times, but PCs should be? C'mon, this argument is just silly. We're not talking about removing agency completely from the player. The player gets to determine HOW being overwhelmed effects them, and gets to choose which things will be specifically difficult for their PCs to manage.
Do people really want a system where characters are immune to basic humanity, especially in a game that is, at its core, about the struggle between one's humanity and one's desire to be more? I'm used to this "Trenchcoat McBadass must not be compromised!" mentality from oWoD players. Didn't think I'd encounter it with the L5R crowd.
