Running to preserve a win late game. How would you approch fixing this?
Hydralisk101 replied to Kdubb's topic in X-Wing
This. Not much sympathy here for stressbots, Thug Life, Zuckuss party busses or a stress mountain Dengar not being able to catch my ships. It should be taken into consideration when you choose ships and combinations which severely limit your movement. -
Next time someone complains about the new waves dropping too quickly, I am going to remind them of that a (currently) 4 page thread exists on theorizing 5 Zealous Recruits jousting 5 Cartel Marauders. Hopefully the meta will react in time to counter these OP swarms.... Though I was planning on taking 5x Cartel Marauders to my local Regional next month BEFORE they became cool (again?)

Running away at the end of a game is a perfectly acceptable strategy. I agree it can be frustrating when playing against it, but choosing chips which are fast and can keep up with fleeing ships (Manaroo) should go into all list building. Avoiding ships and outmatched engagements is a part of real dog-fighting and certainly fits the theme of the game. -
Our LGS just had a good conversation about the best all generics list (besides Thugs). The consensus was that 5x Cartels would be middle of the pack, but Scyks, Zealous Recruits and A-Wings with Snap Shot. I've seen TBC showing up in local games paired with Manaroo or in Mindlink lists. I fly the Cartels mostly because the aesthetics. Reminds me of an old computer game on my first Mac and the repaints were fun to do.

Been playing a ton of 5x Cartel's myself. Lots of fun for casual games, but would depend if you're looking for something tournament worthy or not.

Let us know how this goes! Been flying 5x Cartels for a few weeks now and the Khiraxzs is a great ship, even better when paired with the CDV as wingmen.

A company for Phantoms?

I'm quite partial to the AC Tempest myself. -
What would your build for the MC-80 look like?

I don't think there was an organizational issue. Sure I could've been a little more efficient, but some things I can't cut out. For example, waiting for a dozen games to finish the round after time is called adds typically 20 minutes, which is 3 hours over the course of the day. I think the efficiency issue I had was not having someone to collect results, but I don't think that would've added time because I was usually done entering results of completed games when I called time. If you ballpark for 95 minutes a round, that's still about 10 hours. That's assuming you don't have any issues along the way or do any lunch. Yes, I had a few pairing mistakes identified that added some time and we did have lunch. I am considering requiring lists at registration so that we can have the first round ready before the day starts. This way you come in, confirm your verification, and sit down at your table. If you have ideas on how I could improve the event, please let me know. I'm always interested in improving my events. It may help if FFG adds in the rule "At 15 minutes finish your round to completion, do not start any new rounds." Creates a hard cap while still showing fidelity to 75-90 minute games.

And from the old Dwellers Below podcasts it sounded like they were a blast.

So to sum up this thread: -Driving home mentally exhausted 6+ rounds after at 2am is getting too dangerous for people. -Like any hobby, anywhere there are going to be expenses at the upper levels and any championship event. -If you can't afford the once a year regional (the best of the best tournament in your region) then perhaps the Season Kits, Vassal Tournaments and Store Championships are best suited for you. Every other game from Warhammer to Warmachine/Hordes has gone through this exact debate. -IF 40$ is getting too cost prohibitive: encourage your Regional to adopt a community/GT feel. Bring board games, share beverages, meet other local gaming communities. The best parts of the old Warhammer/new KoW GT's is going out for dinner and drinks with old friends you've made in the community after years of gaming and then coming back to the hall for fun doubles games. There's nothing stopping X-Wing from becoming a game which can promote a community such as this and it will make your 40$ and hotel fees seem more like a mini-vacation. - LGS and Regionals TOs are adapting to a new tournament system and are genuinely interested in constructive feedback for future years. There's a ton that goes into hosting these and it is perfectly fine if they make a profit on a quality product.

yes. Jesper made a great meta call in taking his double IG's. the number of Imperial aces has vastly reduced recently, and the IGs are very strong against the Uboats and Crack swarms that have replaced them at the top tables. Number of Imp Aces has reduced recently? I want to move to your local meta! New England had tons at this past regional, including one in top 4.

$30 price tag scared me away. Could that have been a factor to not selling out? 30$ isn't even close to the number of ships we've all bought just for the cards...
-
In other miniature wargames, the 2 day event helps solve the problem of packed one-day events getting out around 2-3 am. I'm excited for the MA Regional being a two day event and hope it becomes the standard for the future. In old Warhammer GT's it made for great community building with board games and hanging out Friday and Saturday night. Made great friends, and certainly would help support the "fly casual" motto. Price increase to 30$ may seem daunting, but it's worth a quality product of a well run tournament with good prizes and not having to drive home at 3am. These TO's put in a ton of hard work and having some of my money go towards more tournaments and supporting the hobby is fine by me.

What squads beat imp-aces, palp-aces and u-boats?
Hydralisk101 replied to The_Brown_Bomber's topic in X-Wing
Spring may be a difficult time getting that answer as most people are trying to figure that out as well. I'd imagine anyone who has found successful combos beyond Carnor Jax and Palob would want to keep it to themselves for their SCs. -
I've been absolutely loving this version I made when guidance chips finally came out: Miranda- TLT, EM, Homing Missiles, Tactician, GC Guardian- TLT, EM, Homing Missiles, Tactician, GC A-Wing- Chaardan Refit I find it has high survivability beyond the initial pass and is very versatile vs all sorts of lists, especially with a solid blocker. It's tempting to put the Guardian down to a Warden for autothrusters on the A, but I've resisted the temptation so far with all the U-Boats out there at PS3.

I have found X-Wing to be one of the more accessible and welcoming of games I've played. Our local scene for X-Wing is almost half women and we have make sure everyone is welcome and accepting. Both my little sisters, one in middle school and one in high school, have started to play as well. The community is as strong and as accepting as you wish to make it, and I wouldn't feel comfortable having my little sisters play in my LGS if it wasn't a combined effort for everyone these to set standards.

So you win a store championship, and another planned
Hydralisk101 replied to Soontirbeblownup's topic in X-Wing
I'd personally go for a fun but still competetive list. Try the build you've always wanted, just make sure it's intriguing enough to hold your attention for 5+ games. Could be a long day of 5 games repeatedly saying "whelp, guess that combo really doesn't work after all." For example I'm going to run 2 IG's with a Binayre if I make a last SC late March. -
Time and ease of introduction is the most important part for us. On a given 4-9 LGS game night you can fit 3-4 games. Our old game of WHFB was 1 or 2 games with significant setup time. Plus with no painting and fairly easy starting rules everyone from my dad to my littlest sister can and do play.

Did I do wrong by allowing my opponent to change his dial at SC?
Hydralisk101 replied to Wibs's topic in X-Wing
I always like to think of it as an investment. If I'm playing with a new player or casual game I take into account how much does winning matter and how will this help our local group/LGS. I personally don't want to be the one to drive away new players for the sake of winning, especially considering how awesome our LGS is. As for tournaments I usually go with re-dos if it is still the same round and the pieces can be moved back exactly. It's an overgeneralization, but hopefully builds some karma. -
When and how are Regionals usually announced?

What...Interesting...Squads Did You Build as a Beginner?
Hydralisk101 replied to AdmiralThrawn's topic in X-Wing
I really wanted a loaded Kyle Katarn (after playing the video games as a kid) HWK to work, but he never made it past turn 4 in most games.... -
Anything with tractor beams will be a great way to combat aces. After seeing them playtested I think them and Crackswarms will be the bain of regen and stack aces.

Khiraxzs and Scyk for sure. -
If you did change your mind on not playing Scum, the 4 Ace list is fun to play in casual games. Not a common one either which seems to be hard to find these days.
