kelpie got a reaction from Nitenman in Rokugani mundane knowledges (not beta related)
Tchnically, the ones in the picture is still a kimono; kimono mean "thing to wear" so even heimin clothing are kimono. We can easily translate "kimono" with "clothing" and i suppose is not really an error
Of course bogei's kimono is a rough cloth kimono, aimed to practical use and heavvy labour, while samurai use fine silk and embroidery kimono. Bogei's kimono sure will lack of hakama, haori, tabi and of course obi while probably will use a simple belt to hold the kimono tight enough; burakamin will use an even more simple kimono, probably even from a previous owner. Don't think they will use a sandal, probably a rope&leather shoe or boot.
Low class will have no more than one single "party day" kimono they will use for every single matsuri or special occasion, while in the day by day case will use he same kimono, with mends and patchs. The takuhatsugasa or sandogasa (monk curved hat or conical hat) are standard for low people (even because they can use it for rain protection). Yukata will be a very fancy clothing for special occasion, probably
Of course, is not really true for everyone: merchant could be very rich having a lot of different kimonos and probably even better made than samurai ones (all very simple and similar so it's not easy to discern they have money); ashigaru will have a rough but resistent kimono, probably with the mon of their lord, and also several garment to complement armor. Budoka, doshin, and higher class samurai servants will have a better quality clothing and also several different kimonos (because their wealth also shows their lord's wealth) while ronin will have a good quality traveling kimono, probably mended or sewn-off to because they where used to wear a lot of good quality kimono but at the moment they get no more access to this stuff
As for CCG pictures, most of them are good quality, but there are also several very bad pictures (as the armor-bikini you pointed at). I honestly don't think someone really gone with those legs exposed like Kachiko in those pictures (problably even her is not really going on with those legs exposed...)
Anyway, apart from samurai, i was thinking about: what's the differences between heimin from dragon lands and the ones on crane lands? they sure will be very similar on clothing but they made different works; what of their lords' differencies and inheritances will blend into their culture?
I read on the old Emerald Empire that almost every religious aspect for the people came from Monks, so probably bigger presence of the monk will made greater difference than different cultural ones.
Also, in the Crane and Mantis land probably there will be sailors and fisher while in Dragon and Crab ones will not; in the Lion lands animal handler (for big hunting cats) will be a viable work, ad in Unicorn the groom and animal trainers will have a better consideration than everywhere else.
Last but not least, in the crab lands will be higher mortality rate than in the imperial provinces close to Otosan Uchi. In the Ryoko Owari or Toshi Ranbo will be a better living condition than in Hiruma lost lands behind the Kaiu Kabe

very cool!
also, i will agree on putting some "gaijin pepper" (aka gunpowder-ish) into some kuni weapons... to use only against oni!!

kelpie got a reaction from Razorgirl in No minor / Mantis Clan
I'm not a great fan of Mantis, not because i dislike it but because i dislike the fact that a bunch of minor families, would rise to the status of a kami-founded major clan. Honestly, in the strictly rigidi structure of the Rokugan has more sense the Spider Clan (and not, i dislike the very existence of a clan formed by lost and Fu-Leng's followers )
But i'd like to let them be a Minor Clans. Minor Clans are another aspect of the Rokugan. It shows that if someone is worth enough can take his family name and his mon. A Minor clan will never be considered at same glory rank than Major but can have close enough honor and be worthful allies (or enemies) to all samurai
Honestly? what i like more of this edition is the history timeline reset. There is something very little i liked of the story through 2nd-4rth edition but i think are 50% crap and 49.99% even worse. So no, i hope the timeline will not progress similarly to the original one. Maybe something similar would happen, ie scorpion clan trying a coup to the Emperor, but clan war, spirit war, hitomi becoming moon, darkness becoming akodo and spider clan rising up, that and many more, i hope will never see again...

kelpie got a reaction from Darksyde in Quick Review
Because there is no dice yet
As i said before (but maybe in a different topic.. being a bit schizophrenic here with all those topics ) i tried Star Wars in Beta using adhesive etiquette on normal dice and it was plain awful; we all disliked the game. Then i bought the game and standard dice and we accostument to new dice mechanics and symbols very quickly, before the end of the first game session we already where spending advantage and calculating success...
The tool you use to play will influence your judgement, so with a dice roller app there will be no donwtime: you roll, it says exactly what's the result and no brain spent on understanding the mechanics and calculating strange symbols, and you can focus on mechanics
The setting is a rebrand of 1st edition (and that's the best part ) and feeling is the same old so i guess is not really an issue here
I talked with a mate and he too was very interested in play an adventure with 4th and one with 5th edition just to compare things. So in the end maybe we will do it. Probably not because there is not really time to do it, but we can still hope...

kelpie got a reaction from Nitenman in No minor / Mantis Clan
And most important, they can road the player to the next apocalyptic threats by carefully planned campaign (like the origina Otosan Uchi boxed set who leaded to Scorpion Clan Coup) in lieu of narrate them in the next edition book like something someone else experienced... (and i know it's the same things happening in Star Wars where all the fun narrative are taken by main characthers of the films... and series... and comics... but there is a Galaxy outside so you can plan on something else more easily than in the little land named Rokugan...)

kelpie got a reaction from Mirumoto Saito in L5R Dice App
The fact they did pay for beta in the past, does'nt mean i'm good with it
The fact we are downloading, reading and (hopefully) testing the game is a work we do to them. Of course we agreed to doing it, 'cause we love the setting, and we will love to see the game out soon. And also because the illusion we can actually do something to make the game "better" (where better = more similar to what we whould whant)
That does'nt mean we are cool and ok with paying for testing it
Besides, i'm not saying just for beta testing, i'm talking about what will be after the game will be launched. Again, i'm ok to pay for physical dice, who really are good item to complement an RPG, and are good quality. And also are expensive to be mold and distributed etc
I'm not against an app/program who will let you build you characther easily, let you keep track of health/strife/something, an handbook to some essential part of the game, save your skill profile so your dice are easily arranged, etc
I'm against having a wall against people who actually whant to try your game.
it's like going to the restaurant and having to pay for forks and empty dishes and glasses
like buying a car and having to pay for the steering wheel
like buyg a television and having to buy separately the remote
If you whant the people to buy your product, you will need to let her use your product easily
L5R is not a world wide powerful merchandising monster like Star Wars (or WH* if you like), is more of a niche market. The custom dice is a cool choice, who let you use something really similar to previous R&K mechanics, but also giving more depth with opportunity and strife mechanics. But selling the app feel like they invented it only to make more money at the expense of the customers
In the end: i will be more happy to see the rulebook 5$ more and the dice app free, than having to pay for dice app
(and again and again and again: i'm suggesting to make free a simple basic version of the app, one with just dice rolling and maybe also an ad, who in the end could give them more money, and will bring more users to effectively buy the "premium version" of the app)
And i'm saying this also because i know there will be free app with those dice rolling mechanism, is just a matter of time, so they could fight an impossible battle, or ride the storm and gain from it

1) the game is in beta. I'm not here to "play the game since before it ends up", i'm here to try the game, see if i will like it, and maybe even to change something that's wrong at the moment. And then if i like it i will buy it. So in the end, after the game will be out, i'll decide if it's worth
2) i play SW since before Epi VII came out. I bought dice app and two sets of dice. I don't bother with dice, they are something who need to be built and honestly are also good toys. I bother about dice roller app
i don't care if i can have Lion wallpaper or save presets; they are cool, maybe someone will pay 5$ for it. I care about needing to pay to even try the game
where there are a lot of free dice roller app around the world. It just need to remap "1" with "blank", "2" with "strange symbol" and the game's fine
it's not the 5$. As i said before, is about building a wall in front of the player
is like you go buying a car, and then you need to pay again for the keys
FFG can do a free app; can do a free basic app with just dice rolling (and maybe ads) and a premium app with all cool stuff inside (and i should add an automatic strafe tracker and quick access opportunity tracker). Or just change star wars roller dice app into a generico FFG roller dice app, so i could choose between SW dice, Genesys dice, or L5R dice. They can also choose to give rulebook customers code to buy app for free (and maybe let the app free until release with a disclaimer big enough to be clearly read by the moon).
No, they decided to let the player wait for a free unofficial dice app. Because that's what you will see at the table. As i pointed out, it's not really difficult to do: just need a remap to normal dice roller. So i'll wait for an unofficial dice app to try the game. Not because i can't manage to pay 5$ for an app, but because it's wrong to force the players pay for the app before the game even came out
(and yes, they are forcing the players pay for the app, because dice are not sold yet, and if you whant play the game the only way is to buy the app. Or use stickers on normal dice, but i used it while trying the SW beta and it's not advisable)

kelpie got a reaction from Laurence J Sinclair in L5R Dice App
Me too i like more the feeling of the physical dice
I bought 2x package of SW Dice and i agree the dice are cool, well made and worth the price (they cost no more than ordinary dice)
But having to spend money on something else than rulebook and manuals is a huge barrier (i should say a "kaiu kabe"? ) for starting players. I know probably veteran player will buy dice once they start playing, and i know for sure because after a while we started playing SW with app we bought a dice set (and a second one after first year), but for starter, for trying the game, or just for "playing the game the GM bought and continously talk about it and let's try it just to shut him up", a buying a set of dice is no cool, while an app could be a quick and smart way to try it
Or, it "would" be, if the app is free or if everyone already have it 'cause they bought it for another game...
I'll like a free app, because there are a lot of free dice roller app, and someone also support star wars (and also genesys i suppose) dice set; they will adapt and support L5R dice set too. Of course are not fancy looking, no sound, no dice rolling animation, no roll saves etc BUT they accomplish the basic need of rolling the dice and play the game. I think is best for FFG to just point them to an official free app (even more if there are a free version with just roll dice and a premium version with fancy options like: saving dice set, tables for how to spend opportunities, strife track, etc)
But if FFG really really really whant to charge the new player with additional money, at least make a single app with dice for every system (star wars, genesys, legend of 5 rings, whatever they whould like to put here)
ps: And me neither found app on play store; i think there is not yet app and will be released when the game will be produced and sold. BUT app could be good also to test beta... i played SW beta using adesive patches on dice and was really really annoying and not working. We decided the game was'nt worth because dice rolling mechanics was crappy and we had real difficulties understanding the symbols.
When we started playing with real physical dice we found the colour code is important too (purple dice are negatives, green one positive, so basically you need to learn half the symbols )
So i guess it should be good also for beta to have a free app
-
kelpie got a reaction from Nitroxylin in L5R Dice App
I know selling the dice is part of FFG marketing strategy
Also, after 3 years playing Star Wars i have to admit the custom dice mechanic work fine and is also cool
But i think for a rpg is good thing to let the thing "easy" for new players, even because L5R is not a setting so massively know as star wars one (nor a generic system like genesys)
Having to buy new dice (even more: not compatibles with star wars nor genesys ones) is not blatantly expensive... but is still an obstacle to new players. I mean new to L5R, not new to game in general
So, i please FFG: let the app be free
Or at least, having a free version with just dice rolling and maybe a little ad with promotional FFG items, and a complete "premium" app with all other cool stuff
So even the most casual ones can just download the app and start playing, whenever they are.
Or if you don't whant to make things easy for players, let us have just one single app for star wars, genesys and L5R...
PS: would be cool to have also buyable PDF version of the rulebook/manuals
Whenever i play Star Wars i need to fullfill a whole backpack only with the manuals i know i'll use, and they whole occupies a library while for other RPG i just need my kindle. I know for SW there is a problem with copyright, but for L5R you will have the power to sell both: gorgeous hard cover printed version and easy to use PDF version
Please please please please... we are in 2017. Phone/tablet is a thing everyone use. Let us live in the modern days and bring dice app, pdf books and other technological stuff to our table...

kelpie got a reaction from Mirumoto Saito in Big changes you want to see in new RPG
Big changes i always loved to would be to the setting: i mean throwing down into the bin everything happened after scorpion clan coup (even the "aftermath", ie scorpions banished and akodo disappeared) and reworked down in something more close to the original feeling.
What i really whant for this game is something really tied to the setting. I mean: in the old R&K system, there where "classes" and "levels" and even "prestige classes" but they where completely part of the setting. You could change class but you where'nt allowed because of the clan/family restriction. Shugenja and the "kami magic" was part of Rokugan religion; most of time you could also (mentally) remove the game mechanics and the game would be working similar. Also, Ronin was a real drawback, and monks a real strange thing, different from everything else.
That's the feeling i would like on every L5R game from now on. (and unluckily, the huge amount of specialization and equipment from Star Wars' line of games is not good for this)
Oh and hopefully they make authors, and not the outcome of a card game tournament, decide what happens on the setting (and hopefully don't let everything epic and cool happens to NPC while player are only staring at the events...)

kelpie got a reaction from Aedo in Setting, aka the Timeline
Hi everyone
I'm a long time player of L5R 1st and 2nd edition (now approaching to 4rth edition); now they announced a FFG version of the game (can we name it the 5th edition? dunno... but 5 is a good number for Rokugan ) and i'm both excited and fearful
Excited because it's a game i loved in the past (even if really not simple to play as intended and really easy to screw up things with wrong - or just unexperienced - players or masters). Fearful because every iteration of the setting completely screwed up what good was done before (in my opinion).
Luckily in the 4th edition they let you play in different timelines, so you can play in time where Rokugan was a very good and solid fantasy world with japanes-like theme, before coming a nightmarish piece of s***...
No offense taken to whoever write it. I dunno if authors/writers did their best to put a little coherency in something forced by a non coherent system (the CCG tournament) or if it's their fault... but they came up from a really good, solid and intriguing setting (the 1 ed), to a "good idea, bad development" world (scorpion clan coup) to a "total pile of s***" (emperor fu leng, hitomi killing the moon, living shadows became akodo, alliance with the shadowlands and spider clan...) and everything going after is reaaaaaaaaaly worse...
So, i know will not be in the 1rst edition timeline (they already stated "the chrysanthemum throne" in the news... ) but hopefully they could retcon whatever was written from scorpion clan coup onward in something is not painful for your intelligence to read... x_x
Ok ok, maybe is just me and everyone else loved the clan war, spirit war, and whatever happened after 1123... but well... that's my hope
so...
a) what did you think will be the setting?
b) what did you whant for the setting?
c) there is official news about the timeline?

kelpie got a reaction from Nitenman in Your L5R background?
I played several campaign in the past. Well, real past...
We started with 1rst ed. Our party died in the shadowlands before clanbook came out, then we played another party with all clanbook
Then 2nd edition came out, we disliked the history setting post-scorpion clan coup, and we coninued playing in the "1000 years of peace" era.
When 3rd edition came out we had just stopped playing. And so long we never played again
Recently, 4rth dropped in my hand, so i started reading it, and i like very much, and i'm planning a short adventure/campaign.
What i really like of the game is the feeling, the pre-coup setting, the idea is a fantasy, even an high and epic one, but it feels like there is low level. I disliked what came after (and with "disliked" i mean "i think a game with this setting should never be sold nor given free because is plain awful and a huge pile of s***")
I can put some hope on this new edition, but also i don't think system similar to Star Wars one would be even close to what i loved from this game, so i've also a huuuuuge fear
