Ah yes, the graceful Cthulhu Striders of planet Dagon. Very docile until they hear the Ancient Starsong and start to harvest corpses from the Deeptrees.

Not sure what your measurement for "extreme" is, but the newer artwork seems pretty tame to me. But, I mean, I grew up playing RIFTS. So let's just say that my bar for "EXTREME" is pretty high.

Thankfully, FFG's Archaeologist is more Indiana Jones than Marcus Brody, so you have a ton of options as to how to handle yourself in a scrap.

2P51 has pointed out the explicitly combat-related talents, but there are other ways your character could conceivably make use of their Knowledge skills in a fight. If you're in an abandoned temple, for example, you could use Knowledge Specialization and Researcher to find secret passageways, set off traps to your advantage (yeah, that Triumph definitely means you find a false floor tile to push somebody onto), and otherwise know the terrain of any ancient structure better than anybody else. This can make you an invaluable scout BEFORE combat -- whether that means setting up ambushes, or avoiding trouble in the first place.

As your character develops, consider purchasing the Scout or the Big Game Hunter specializations for further combat utility. The Scout's Quick Strike ability is basically this:

There is a part of me that thinks the entire EU was shitcanned exclusively because of the Vong. And that part of me kind of understands and agrees.

GreyMatter got a reaction from Stan Fresh in Why would you choose a Holdout Blaster or Light Blaster over a normal Blaster Pistol or Heavy Blaster Pistol?
I generally find concealability to be an under-used and under-rated concept. I tend to GM very "low-fantasy" (speaking in tone terms, not genre ones) games, where hunger, thirst, weight, and survivability all play more prominent roles than most people might be used to. Accompanying that is the need to consider how BIG things are: you're carrying a backpack, wearing armor with a utility belt with all the attendant kit attached to it, have a blaster rifle slung over your shoulder, are climbing up a hill and you want to throw a heavy blaster pistol for added kick? That's your call, but you'll be much less nimble than the person with the concealed pistol tucked away in their sleeve.

My players are also often thrown into situations where "palms up military ops" aren't really de rigeur. They're walking the streets of a metropolis, or sneaking around behind enemy lines, or infiltrating a gang. Most of the situations they're in, showing any weaponry whatsoever is going to call suspicion on you.

So I'd say the need for them is essential, depending on the circumstances of the campaign. Stealth can be a huge force multiplier, even for Heavies or Gunslingers.

That actually sounds like a lot of fun. I haven't done a classic North American road trip since 2007, when I drove from Vancouver, BC up to Whitehorse, Yukon to Haines, Alaska. It was pretty epic. I did a circuit of New Zealand a few years ago that was great but road tripping just isn't the same without filthy roadside diners and truck stops that sell bullets and beef jerky in boxes next to each other. Hope you have a good time!

I imagine the background motivation for the utility belt was rather tongue-in-cheek and as a GM I would be pretty permissive with it (yes, including Cultural Etiquette Manuals!), assuming the PC was playing a wisecracking Doctor Who/MacGyver character. I would hate for a powergamer to get their hands on this, though.
