Hi guys, I posted a thread not too long ago about the 3D model/print I made for perfect fitting bases you can measure from. Keep in mind, these days public libraries have at least some sort of 3D printer available for cheap (often charge a pittance for plastic-weight used) and I am making the file available for whoever wants it.

One of the reasons I love this game is that I never have a bad game of Armada because I define a good game as one where I have fun.

Hi guys. I am toying with the idea of having a go at Armada. Atm I have a starter. What would you recommend to buy next?
I'm interested in Empire. No Rebel Scum for me.
Nothing competitive,  just something fun to play. Not interested in tournaments.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Empire!!
For just-fun play, you'll want to pick up at least one Imperial fighter pack, and an ISD. I mean, you went with the Empire to play with an ISD, right? Gladiators and Raiders ate great too. If you find you like the squadron game get more Imperial squadrons, as well as the Bounty Hunters.
Btw., depending on your local community, don't discount tournaments. The atmosphere there may not be as cut-throat and nasty as you might fear. Whereabouts are you?

So a quick update here. I was unfortunately unable to reach a quality fabricators in the local area, there is however a service available to me that may allow me to consolidate costs as well as produce these...

I'm going to draft up the necessary CAD/CAM drawings and see what pricing looks like to have these made....

I'll keep you posted in this thread, you may wanna follow it so you don't miss any news.

I'm interested, this is a good idea and if you can pull it off as outlined you will have no lack of market

I have a scanner, and could easily draw up an autoCAD tool path at 1:1 scale. It would be precise within 0.01+/- of a MM.

Like I'm said in the OP. Let's presume I do the work and these are PRECISE lol

    Too true! lol

Yeah a sheet of acrylic is pretty cheap, especially as thin as it's need to be.  If I did the engineering myself (because that's what I do for a living), I could see them being pretty reasonable if I did a run of 20-30 or so at a time.

I find it interesting that you would have trouble losing defense tokens from your devastator.

It's a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" situation for opponents because if you aren't shooting at devastator, well, you aren't going to kill it and its still an ISD hauling many points! but if you ARE shooting at it you are powering it up! I like the title and the concept and I have run it a few times and always had a lot of fun, my wake up moment when I realized it isn't really a competitive title is when it got wiped out in a round by a Yavaris pushed Scurrg and Ywing swarm. It's very expensive and is really a hate magnet for bombers while the carriers run away (and this was even before relay so its worse now). One fun little tidbit is that if you have no ships in your front arc you can always add your blues to one of your Anti-squad attacks, the look on the face of the squadron pusher when you go to grab 6 blues is priceless, of course, I roll all crits and accs. but still fun!

A lot of us (gasp) don't play X-wing, or play only casually.
In this case though, I do actually see the differences in where the problem is.
In X-wing, the current meta has been created by mechanical interactions that were simply too effective for their cost.  Jumpmasters made a cheap ship capable of equipping nearly every undercosted ability in the game,  so they dominated the meta.
In Armada, the issue is activation advantage and initiative.   While there are options to play counter to these strengths, the ship game heavily favors both.
If you set a ship with significant activation and initiative advantage and pair it with abilities to bypass or ignore the primary abilities to counter it,  you will inevitably get an unhinged meta that will inform game decisions long past the point where that meta was popular or viable.
And in that sense,  X-wing has a more desirable problem:   individual units and upgrades are too good and need to be addressed directly. The core game mechanics function fine.   At a given pilot skill step,  player one goes first and player 2 goes second.  Mechanically,  is a sound system with advantages and disadvantages for each player.
Armada has a core mechanic problem, and ultimately that's much worse: player one and player 2 are nor or less evenly matched until one of them starts making activations that cannot be responded to.  This might be extra ship actions,  it might be extra squad actions.   The breakdown always happens at the same exact point in every round,  in every game.   That’s why the current meta trends to favor a concentrated breaking mechanism.   Previously it was Rieekan ensuring that all the most important actions occurred after the opponent had finished their normal turn.   Before that it was the Demo triple tap, or Fireballs running into the enemy after all their ships had maneuvered.

In short,  every single top tier list since wave 1 has depended on stalling out the enemy until it can act without interference.  From the GenCon Special to the A-wing ball to the 2-ship fireball to the 2+3 Rieekan Aces.
And my argument is that this  core mechanic hurts the game. If a player is guaranteed to go first,  then the opponent should have a guarantee that they can choose to go last.

Indeed, sometimes people build lists that thrive in second. Lists that bring objectives that guarantee a bunch of points thanks to strategic keyword etc.
Any honest, seasoned Armada tournament veteran will tell you, sometimes the luck of the draw is as important as your list.

OP means "original post" or "original poster" depending on context. specifically I was seconding this statement: "And after careful testing, I have found a fundamental truth:  Devastator’s ability to trade defense for offense only works when it uses its defense tokens to defend itself as effectively and completely as possible."

I'm not sure Quads will have the impact we think they do in big v big combat.
I'm especially leery of them on a pickle. These things only fire if you are going slower than your target, not same speed, slower. This means that if you want to guarantee that long-range hurtage you have to go speed 1 and assume your opponent will not do the same (no guarantee of that at all) and going speed 1 makes an already easy to front-bump MC80 even more predictable.
Vics I already run at speed 1, very rarely at speed 2 and always with a nav token, but that means any big ships at speed one dodge the quad and also you never catch up to them.
I think Quads look like a "big handful of dice all the time" upgrade on paper but in practice it will likely find maximum value in off-arcs as flanker hate.

Keep the Vic-I at long range and with some red dice modification / addition.  Let the squads do the work, then speed up to 2 to finish the job.
