Hotaru making the kill is the right call specifically due to her relationship with Toturi.  You get more character drama if Toturi has to watch his friend kill his brother.

Yep, I never was expecting for Hotaru to show up immediately after the last fiction focus on her. But her killing Arasou and halting the Lion's morale was perfect..the killing blow, her weeping for her friendship and hoping it would matter afterwards in a matter of one/two paragraph deserves praise.

By the way, am I the only one that read Hoturo's letter as:  "So, I killed your brother.  Feel free to send me a gift basket later.  Congrats on your promotion; everyone was rooting for it.  Everyone.  By the way, remember our High-school Fling?  Yeah, I remember it too.
    Hearts and Kisses, Hoturo.
PS:  Your bro totally had it coming."

But seriously, I could see Toturi and Hoturo having a brief romance (not necessarily physical) or being just friends.  Of course, she could have wanted him, but got spurred, and ran into Kachiko's evil web- sorry, I totally meant her loving arms.

Toturi always ask Hotaru for haikus whenever he's smitten and fawning over some girl in Tsuma, never once sensing that Hotaru longs for him..then came the newcomer, Kachicko and everything changes. Hotaru and Kachiko starts to hang out more often, Hotaru still does the things for Toturi but the haikus seems sweeter and smiles better..Toturi now never seemed to enjoy all his conquers but longs for time when it was just him and Hotaru..and then he realized, he is inlove with his bestfriend.

stay tuned for next season of The Gempukku Diaries. ^_^

Glad to see the whole gang's here, even Motso.

Everything you said, it just that it would have been good to see for the new players why Arasou was chosen instead of Toturi instead.

I too, giggled, with all the name dropping and references. (Agetoki always looks like its-a-meee-Mario to me) but I would have like to have a bit of shout out to the mentioned alliance between the Lion-Scorpion as this was one of the thing changed from the old story and got me curious.

  4. Jokingly: I think Mantis won where they make an orangutan a clanman.

Seriously for the other thing, I always felt that Phoenix was always on the lower end of the spectrum in term of power. They always had the smallest playerbase back then and the jankiness of shugenja/samurai dependance on most of their deck was detrimental in making them consistent. They were absolute beast when someone discovered a combo with them but most of those deck where NPE and got banned/errata immediately.

    hope it helps a bit..

My recollection was Yoshino went out cursing his ancestors, and the Lion players got really bitter about that.

    You be the judge:  http://www.kazenoshiro.com/kazenoshiro/8/h8e05p15.php

Domo arigato for making me skim the story once again. Yoshino's defiance was really striking here and i did forgot about him acknowledging the curse of the Matsu Championship for the Lion.

and he did sacrifice himself knowing he was outclassed by Chags so that the Lion will have a reason to further attack the Unicorn and take Chagatai out of the picture.

again, thank you for making me re-read it and i suggest for the new players (lions in particular) to read it. The combat and dialogue was superb.

    I suppose you mean Dairuko?

Yup, you know how it goes with Lion Champion..once you see one, you see them all plus I couldnt be bothered to know them thoroughly since they seem to change every season ^_^

just to be clear: it was Dairuko and i kid with the above post

I mean technically the Lion won the battle, they just didn't take the city. The Crane were in full retreat, and are still under siege. Although I agree the Lion are supposed to be the best at war and the best tacticians, but they always seem to get written losing wars, or winning with over whelming numbers.  Writing them as winning battles with brilliant tactics has happened a few times and are some of my favorite stories for them. Or the storyline where Matsu Yoshino said we will sack your city a year from now, stop us if you can, and they couldn't was cool as well.

I seem to recall Yoshino getting killed by Chagatai in that fic but even there, I vaguely recall he was sacrificing himself for the Clan.

the only real win I read, recall and liked was Domotai's army vs Legulus'. The calculations and meticulous planning really shows the virtue, brilliance and sheer dedication of the Lion army.

  8. The story lacks Daidoji Nerishima's POV of Toturi's ambush. ^_^

Toturi's brilliance could have been shown without the focus on the other named Lions' incompetence. I couldn't see in the fiction why Arasou was better than Toturi as a champion in the first place.

the highlight of the story for a Lion fic was all about the Crane, both the immediate sorrow and the succeeding letter from Doji Hotaru saved the fic for me.

Brace for Lion's lamentations about always losing a battle for a clan know for brilliance in war and combat.

They must actually. I feel the province choice will be an important part of deck-building, but placing them will also matter a lot.

Sweet, so used to playing with one province left as Scorpion and this definitely is a great card to have under the last attack if the same gameplay applies in the LCG.

Last province, usually is everyone attacking you, flipping this essential makes the opponent trickless. I hope ^_^

  10. I love the change from the ccg to the lcg about provinces.

It might slow the game down a bit which can be both a good/bad thing. Scouting province just become a real thing, it adds another layer of tactical decision during conflicts.

hoping for ninja/scout cards that flips/blanks provinces as an action ^_^

and also, strongholds can have a facedown province under them right?

If this is true, why do you have such a problem with a more diverse Rokugan? After all, you just need to see yourself in relation to the elements of the story being told, right?

There's nothing mutually exclusive about diversity and the exploration of ideas. Indeed, properly exploring ideas requires many perspectives.

Because you want more diversity when it is already in existent in the story and setting just not represented in the skintone you want it to be represented.

Because AEG overcatered to fan service (Spider, introduction of Foreign Goddess, Seductive Taint) in the twilight of their run that the story has gone down in quality.

Because, the question of where the darkskin people are at was answered already but wasn't enough because people want them to be the focal point when it isnt warranted.

    I love when that happens!

First of all, I like my L5R centered around Rokugan with Japanese-looking characters. However, I am open-minded, and hoped more people on this forum would be. Just because I am okay with something or even love it, does not mean I hate everything else. I would love to see stories with black heroic samurais but I still love and prefer Japanese looking dudes and women as samurai in my L5R.

Secondly, OP, that is I, never said there isn't enough dark-skinned people in L5R and / or in LotR. I challenge you to quote me. Moreover, what OP wants is for people to keep their words in their mouths and NOT put them in mine. What OP, still I, wanted was to answer a question asked by someone else, and I guess not many people went and read the thread where the question was asked (the forum has a search option). What OP wants is sharing his opinions about an interesting subject and hear thoughts of other people on this forum about.

Finally, about the entitlement: I am white, as in light-skinned... I genuinely believed it was unnecessary to specify it, because it does not change what I think. Yep, the colour of my skin is irrelevant to my ideas. If anything, I would be entitled to light-skinned heroic samurais from mediterranean and catholic descent, even though they are actually atheists.

    1. As you said, there are already stories like Afro Samurai, Man with the Iron Fist and hope you enjoy the quality of storytelling there. If you want it in L5R setting, there Kokujin and the multiple part Enlightened Madness fiction but if that not equates to representation with you because he is a villain even though he was the focus of the story and very fleshed out then dont waste your time reading it.

    2.  I focus on your challenge and I don't have to quote you because I am Scorpion and I cheat. When you start this thread (from another thread from a question already answered multiple times)with everything you just written, it does not take a genius to comprehend what you want to happen even if the story doesn't need it.

    3. Sure it was unnecessary to specify your skintone not to further strengthen your argument because you know its irrelevant and I should be thankful for you for not pushing your idea the right way for someone of your skintone.

just as you said, completely unnecessary. Agreed.

yes, god forbid we actually talk about the subject, rather than simply dismiss it out of hand. WHAT HORROR. WHAT SHAME.

OP made a genuine, considered effort to approach the subject even mindedly, to show how representation is an evolving issue and how l5r can approach it in a reasonable way, and his first response is a piece of garbage like this.

    stay classy, guys.

Because there really isn't an issue if you think about it.

OP said there isn't enough dark-skinned people in L5R and LoTR when there clearly is. What OP wanted was prominence for "dark-skin people" in the story which is really not needed which for me smells like entitlement.

representation is being tackled and approached by both settings by symbolism. One just need to see themselves in relations to the elements of the story being told. I like my stories to tackle ideas rather than cater to certain demographics/races.

Were are the dark skinned people?

I am excited to join a new LCG from the start.  This looks like a good opportunity for me to join.  I just got into board gaming in December of 2015 after having given up Magic the Gathering in the early 1990's.

I do not know any of the old lore or anything.  But I am willing to learn a new LCG from the start.

Dark skinned people are in the Burning sands and pretty sure most unnamed Unicorns are.

Rokugan is based on Asian myth, mystery and culture though majority is Feudal Japan but not solely based on that. Xenophobia is part of the setting.

also welcome to L5R, might be a good idea to pick a clan while waiting for the official release.

I'm not sure that anyone is aware of this, but, the place that is holding GenCon has not been properly retrofitted to handle more than 350 rabid L5R fans screaming Utz/Banzai........maybe we should all tone it down a bit at these events? :P

    Show me your stance, samurai!

haven't been to Gencon but everytime a local Kotei coincedes with MtG launch or other CG event, we would UTZ our lungs out over here just to see them other ccg communities' reaction..hoping our frenzy convert them to L5R players.

Please make a animated short with voice acting and showing various scenes with the main characters. Done well it would generate crazy hype. Flashing to a duel, then some words exchanged between courtiers, then a Lion yelling at his troops with the unicorn in the background charging towards the camp.

I like this a lot because it shows a lot of dedication to this game by FFG and inspires confidence in me they will support it properly.

    Wohohohoho..have I got a surprise for you!
