The Shadowlands is a crucial part of L5R. If this game was going to have some sort of co-op mode it could be saved for an automated deck style along the lines of LOTR, but since I'm pretty sure (and I hope) this is more of a 2v2 or multi-faction game (hoping for 4-6 players, teams optional?), the Shadowlands could use their own "Clan" (and I'd love to see Naga and Ratlings represented too).

Until Alliance screws them over. The LCGs and games like X-wing, I don't think will be as much of an issue. Delays maybe, but the "get it RIGHT NOW" isn't quite there as with a CCG.
I am extremely thankful I didn't get into Destiny now. Smaller retailers will be screwed over. And product will mysteriously be found in order to move stuff clogging Alliances' warehouse.
    So, once again, #!%@ Diamond/Alliance.

I ran a comic + gaming shop for eight years, and then own gaming shop for a couple of years.
Alliance / Diamond is a terrible company.

Don't go victim-blaming here. Alliance has shown a clear bias toward larger stores and stores that order mass quantities over smaller stores that don't have as large a customer market (outside of, usually, MtG and whatever the Japanese card game fad of the time is). I've heard many times before, and again with this recent news, of Alliance being the most incompetent and/or intransigent distributor to work with. My main store here has been in business for nearly 30 years, and the guy there knows how to run it and do it well, so kindly keep your obnoxious insults to yourself. Capisce?

Firstly, I'm worried and not very happy about today's news regarding distribution. My local stores placed orders for me through Southern Hobby and now those orders are up in the air, considering the release isn't until after the August 1 transition date when all FFG stuff will be handled through Alliance.
I'm old enough to remember when Marvel tried to monopolize by making itself its own distributor. DC and Image went exclusive with Diamond, and all the other distributing companies ended up tanking, leaving us only with Diamond having a monopoly for all comics distribution. Diamond owns Alliance. So, I see the trend, I see the risks, and this only helps Asmodee's bottom line, NOT the gaming customers, as that press release claimed. Multiple distributors creates a healthy economic environment. One monopoly, especially for all FFG products (the company I buy the most gaming stuff from by a large percentage), is the opposite of healthy.
So yeah, I had orders placed. Those orders are now in limbo following this news, and if there's any allocation, or hiccups on Alliance's end (not unheard of), suddenly a lot of us are going to be sitting there waiting for a chance to play the game, especially competitive players.
Has anyone else checked with their local gaming shops regarding their pre-orders for L5R? Any that ordered thru a company other than Alliance? What has your store told you, if so? Mine are hopefully going to find out quickly.
    Cheers.

Well, I have no love of those mega online stores that deep discount everything and have in the past made it impossible for brick and mortar stores to compete, so if that's the silver lining to this whole thing, I'll take it.

It's idiotic assumptions like this that make you a complete as*hat, Tyler. Sorry, but no. The implication again being that they are somehow negligent isn't true.

What IS true is that they are smaller, that the market isn't large enough in all areas that there are that many gamers for something that is a niche hobby, when most people aren't even aware anything outside of Monopoly and Checkers even exists. They handle larger clients. Yes. This does not make them better clients, nor does being a small store make the people running the store negligent or incompetent. Your arrogance is disgusting.

BTW, I've been talking to a large distributor, whom I will not name, but they've confirmed two things.
    1) Product availability and pricing has not been confirmed yet and is not expected until July
    2) The current scheduled release date for the product is "October"
So, anyone that is doing pre-orders, is doing so on a guess.

So, generally speaking this official forum for Star Wars LCG is pretty quiet. Main reason being that other forums for SW:Lcg are very active.
There are a number of these, but one of the most active is actually owned by Fantasy Flight Games and so I dont think directing people there is a problem.
    Cardgamedb
    Http://Www.cardgamedb.com/forums
Very active every day, links to videos, podcasts, strategy guides, daily discussions, competitions, meet-ups and lots more.
So do not be put off the game by a quiet forum, instead go to cardgamedb and join in
This post should stay near the top of the forum but if we suddenly get a few new threads, then please "bump" the thread folks.

In an effort to get as much exposure to the different factions and see how they play, my current plan is to build....

    Stark (banner GJ)
    Targ (banner Lanni)
    Some sort of NW/Martell build.

I'm gonna wait on Tyrell and all this talk of dominant Bara fealty sounds really lame/boring.

Anyone have a recommendation on which of NW or Martell I should "main" and "banner"?  Or would Tyrell match better with one of them?

    5 tentative decks built!

    Targ/Martell
    Stark Fealty
    Night's Watch/Tyrell
    Lannister Fealty
    Greyjoy/Baratheon

To some extent, I just like some absurd pairings, like the Baratheon family supporting the Greyjoys (hah!), and on the flip side, for any new player who wants to live out their Stark vs. Lannister family wishes, that's set to go.

The game will be incompatible with the CCG. I suspect significant changes that will redesign it so it is different enough that it will take a solid 12+ months of design and playesting. We have 22 months to go and I want a quality product. Now, go try FFG's other products in the mean time...

And yet when led by "boss monster" types who didn't have anything else going on, they felt flat.

    Kali-Ma was a dud.
Iuchiban's arc had its moments, but he himself fell on his face once he returned, and the interesting things the SL had going on were the elements that pre-dated his return.
Fu Leng turned into Cobra Commander, defeated with monotonous regularity.

Yogo Junzo, Daigotsu, Shahai, Kuni Yori- these were not "boss monsters." They were characters, characters with betrayals, loves, obsessions, and so on.

Kayomasa (a friggin' ogre, bear in mind) did more for the Shadowlands than Iuchiban did, because his personal code of honor and his devotion to Daigotsu were character elements. Had he just been "the baddest ogre around, and servant to Daigotsu," he would have been entirely forgettable.

For a writer, the question "preserve the timeline or not" is largely an empty question.
Ultimately, the only "timeline" events that matter are the ones that directly lead to or affect the story you're telling. Anything else in the timeline is fluff you mention in throw-away references to give depth to your setting.

And as a result, the only time you even care about changing or not changing the timeline is when it prevents you from telling the story you want to tell. Which is usually because you want to use characters in a way that would be precluded by the old timeline. Otherwise, the timeline is just reference material.

So, in short, the question you're asking is irrelevant, because changing the timeline is not a primordial setting decision - it's a tool they can use if and when they need it.

The relevant question is, what kind of story does FFG want to tell?.

That's quite a handwave there. Either every-little-detail is crucial and must be preserved exactly as-is ... or it's not and it can just be boxed up where newcomers won't have to look at it or care. Claiming that you want to do the latter as a means of accomplishing the former is at least paradoxical but I think "schizophrenic" suits the nature of the impulse better.

And this Damocles sword of "alienating the player base" folks keep trying to hang over FFG's head ... there really is no simpler way to put it: while it'd be nice if everyone could be happy in the wake of this kind of change, the existing base isn't very important as customers or even as ambassadors to other customers. And least important of all is the niche within a niche within a niche, etc., who would ragequit over a continuity overhaul.

In this case there is, in the very case, still an antagonist (who it is depends on perspective). In which case, the same logic applies.
