Kyoden Kurosora got a reaction from Victarion13 in Shinjo Trailblazer
Once you declare a conflict (choose conflict type, ring, ready characters) in 3.2 everything is "during a conflict" until 3.3

Kyoden Kurosora reacted to Ishi Tonu in Six Packs In Six Weeks
Lets get real for a second here................
If you are going to play this game competitively, you're getting all the cards you need to play at the highest level, prior to the tournament(s) you plan to play in, period. Nothing about this announcement should deter you from acquiring the cards you feel you need. If you are a competitive player you will purchase or borrow the cards as needed. If you are not playing competitively, this has no impact on you at all as you can casually acquire more cards for your collection on your own time.
Throwing out the financials of all this, this is a good thing for a number of reasons:
1. It advances the meta game substantially away from the 'core set only' environment in a short amount of time.
2. If potentially attracts other players, competitive and casual, that want to play things that were not included in the core, i.e. Shadowlands, Imperials, etc.
3. It gives the competitive players the knowledge of all the upcoming Keeper and Seeker cards so they can make and educated decision for the upcoming tournament season.
"That's a well and good IT, but, I've got bills to pay, kids to feed, and a wife to keep happy." I hear that. I can pretty much guarantee this weekly model will not get the wife's stamp of approval. The good thing is that this is only being done for this initial Imperial Cycle............at least that is what the announcement leads me to believe. After this initial push, I would expect that things slow down and we get into a more normal 1 pack per month release. There may or may not be a break between the Imperial Cycle and the next cycle, but, I would not expect FFG to continue releasing new cards every week.
So the only minor downside here is the upfront cost, which you can choose to space out, if you plan on purchasing all the packs. If you are a competitive player, find out when the tournaments your plan to play will be held and see if it's in your budget to purchase all the packs, if not, see if you know another player with the cards you are missing and borrow them. If you are a casual player...........buy things when you can. There is no real meta game for casual players to worry about so there is no reason to 'keep up with the Jones' and buy all the cards.
There is way more positive than there is negative about this.
*edit*
This also gives you another opportunity to weed out the trolls and grow your ignore list.

Kyoden Kurosora reacted to SlackerHacker in Deck search idea
Tutors are terrible in card games, IMO. The reason is every deck would run it or be at a huge disadvantage. When a card or non-core mechanic is so good that it is good for every deck then it makes for a very uniform and bland game state.

Does anyone else feel like they have been sold on this game and FFG just needs to quit their sales pitch and give it to us already?

Kyoden Kurosora got a reaction from Daramere in [Spoiler] Indomitable Will
Voltron is indeed a reference to the giant robot series. Voltron was formed when lesser robots combined to make a more powerful/larger robot.
In L5R context it means loading up a single character with a bunch of attachments and/or cards that temporarily boost stats.

Kyoden Kurosora reacted to Kitsu Seinosuke in Shadowlands Speculation
Assuming that Shadowlands is designed as a splash-faction (as Daigotsu Steve says) rather than a full faction in its own right, I'd like to see as many political Shadowlands cards as military ones.
- A military Oni could be a typical Hida-killing monster.
- A political Oni could be a sinister seducer or shapeshifter.
- A military maho spell could be a something that causes injuries.
- A political maho spell could be something that controls minds.
This would made the Shadowlands what it should be: a temptation. You can get lots of power from it to balance out your clan's weaknesses, at the small cost of your soul. Do Crane or Scorpion want an easy way to kill their enemies? Do Crab or Unicorn want to speak with silvered tongues? The kansen are always happy to help...

Kyoden Kurosora reacted to Teslacrashed in Which "sacred cows" are you hoping get abandoned?
Honestly anything from the old story can go.
Outside of the initial story about the Kamis and the tournament and all the "foundational" history, I don't care if they never even come close to repeating old stories, and I'd kinda prefer it that way. Give me a plot from the Dragon who intentionally flooded the Crane lands to destabilize them for some nigh-unknowable reason.

Kyoden Kurosora got a reaction from YasukiKaito in Which "sacred cows" are you hoping get abandoned?
Sacred cows that that I would lead to the slaughter:
1. Methods of defeating/destroying threats in a very short time-frame that have previously confounded all the experts for thousands of years. No more magic bullets or special snowflakes.
2. Big Bad confronts the empire and all the Clans join hands, sing Kumbaya and win without consequence. This while the Big Bad simultaneously goes into trope mode, losing all intellect, spelling out the grand scheme, becoming overconfident, and being defeated without consequence (see #1). No more forgone conclusion or dogpile 8v1 scenarios.
Make the Big Bad divisive. Make it reasonable for Clans to choose opposing sides. Big Bad doesn't need to be Shadowlands or gaijin incursion over and over again. Also, make it matter which Clans are allied. Show how fragile and problematic this can be.

Kyoden Kurosora reacted to Huitzil37 in Integrating the Spider
They need to be asked what they want in order to determine "what the playerbase wants", but that answer should not be a binding judgment.
Player involvement in the story creates a sense of investment and spectacle, but the way AEG had committed to doing it just before the sale was EXACTLY the wrong way to go about it. You don't tell the players they get to pick where the story goes -- they are not good at that, that is not their job, it;s your job. They don't have the tools and information required to plan ahead for what makes a good story, and you do. You're abdicating your responsibility and putting it in the hands of the people least suited to carrying it out.

Kyoden Kurosora reacted to Osmo in Integrating the Spider
I actually want to address the two points brought up in this argument as the crux of the entire argument happening here, and why it is ultimately going to continue to spiral out of control.
Point 1 - Player Agency in Clan Decisions - This becomes a common theme in this argument, that the Spider must change their Clan in order to fit into the setting and that the Spider have a large measure of control over their revisions. Yes, they will likely be substantially revised, but the Spider players are not in charge of this revisions, nor are the other Clans in charge of their revisions (and yes, there will be revisions of other Clans, if nothing more than simple contraction for the core set). Both sides need to realize that changes will happen largely outside of their control. I actually like this point because it puts the onus on FFG to make the setting work, and they will likely do a decent job with it.
Point 2 - The Setting Will Change - I believe a lot of people base arguments around the Rokugan left at the end of AEG's ownership of the properity and that decisions about where the setting goes from there can and should include all of the backstory and context. For me, this argument and others like it are the prime example of why FFG needs to study the game setting, understand the context, but then make changes and revisions free of the constraints imposed by twenty years of historical inertia. A new perspective that is not mired by the traditional storyline arguments and divorced of the levels of passion that dominate the forum will likely make this game more accessible to incoming players and allow FFG to make a more cohesive, consistent setting that may or may not feature all of the factions as they once were.

Kyoden Kurosora got a reaction from Papa Midnight in Design Talk - Card Types
I would like to see the provinces replaced by Strongholds that have effects relative to their position, what Stronghold is next to them, or how many you control. Remove the resource production (PS & FH may be irrelevant with this design as well) so when you lose a Stronghold you only lose it's effects and don't have the production death spiral. This could also change the interaction of the remaining Strongholds.
A quick and dirty example (not entirely fleshed out but the gist):
I have 2 Strongholds remaining:
left SH is Sepulcher of Bone - undead cards cost 2 less, goblin/oni/troll cards at adjacent SHs cost 1 more
right SH is The Halls of the Damned - Samurai have +2 force, Samurai at left SH have +1 force, Samurai at right SH have +1 chi
In this case an undead samurai brought into play from the Sepulcher of Bone would cost 2 less and have +1 force while in combat there or + 2 force while in combat at The Halls of the Damned.
This would make choosing Strongholds and their placement a part of the strategy. Destroying Strongholds would also become strategic beyond mere resource destruction. You could also use this to restrict/enhance movement between SHs. Personalities may only be called to battle that is adjacent without an ability or strategy that extends this range or your opponent may be able to restrict in a similar manner.
