This whole beta has become to much. I have seen nothing but arguments over they rule that amount to I'm right and your wrong. In truth I think that theses rule are junk. Forget a beta this needs to go back to an alpha.
After a weekend of trying to run this for two different groups, one not even getting through Character Creation before go back to 4th. I decided this game was never going to work for my players.
As I see it the forum had divided into three camps.
    1. The FFG fanboys/girls who seem to think FFG writers can do know wrong.
    2. The Old-school L5R players who hate it because its not 4th revised.
    3. The few neutrals who are looking to bring both sides together under this new game.
I tried to be in group 3 but this forum proved that this will never work. Everyone is more into proving that everyone else's way is wrong then finding a middle ground.
To be blunt I don't think these rules will ever work as created. My reason for this is FFG needs to stop trying to please everyone and pick a system. This hybrid junk is not going to work. Either make a 4th revised system or a narrative dices system. stop trying to please everyone. I will not play a narrative dices system but at least I could respect them for sticking to their guns. This half-a"" system is just garbage. And from the looks of the playtest schedule and their commits it looks like this will never get resolved. You can't focus on small parts of the rules when so many of these areas are interlinked. How can you test Character Creation one week then Skills/Advantages/Disadvantages the next. Skills/Advantages/Disadvantages are part of Character Creation. Artificial separations like this led to rules not functioning as a whole.
Other issues are the people trying to make this into a Ancient Japaneses  RPG. If you want that go play Sengoku RPG it does it better. This is not Japan its Rokugan. Yes it Takes heavily from Ancient Japan but it also take from Korea and China. And in the end is its own animal
FFG players don't have to be told how to roleplay. It has never been the job of the rules to create adventure. The rule are there to add structure and resolution to tasked. They are not there to tell you when your Character gets angry, sad, what ever.
The only thing I can see to make this game work is to split it in two.
One half being the 4th revised/5th ed R&K game, and the other being a campaign setting for Genesys. Other then that I don't think it will work.
or just picking one or the other.

A word of wariness though - it may be easy to think "oh, we'll change all things and it will give people a reason to buy!", but it would be wrong - if you change the elements that make players comfortable and familiar with a RPG, they will just go away (I'm looking at you, D&D 4th) and search for alternatives.

I guess the key difference to me would be that whereas there's no question that the use of the term ***** is derogatory, I don't accept the premise that the use of the word banzai in this context is considered hurtful by most Asian-Americans.
While the initial comment on SUSD that sparked this conversation was certainly by someone of Chinese descent, I think the comment thread as a whole showed that that particular poster had a virulent hatred of the Japanese and Japanese culture. I don't believe that their views were representative of Asian-Americans as a whole. I haven't been able to find any signs outside of L5R discussions that the word banzai is considered inherently problematic (and I feel I've given it an honest effort).
ETA: I went back and reread the original SUSD post and my description of that poster here isn't fair. I'm still not convinced that that poster's views are representative, however.

    Point taken, and post amened.
But I stand by the point that Banzai is not solely a warcry and I hadn't heard of any problems with it over the past couple of decades.

@BigKahuna Could you perhaps give us a good, concise definition of what RPG-PTSD is? I think defining your term will help everyone better understand where you're coming from. You have given a couple of examples of symptoms and (I think, maybe) causes, but summary will help the rest of us, I think.
Also, to everyone, what are the criteria for "balanced" role playing game design? It's quite true that we can't really argue against "I don't like system X" because that is a matter of personal opinion and completely valid. We can discuss the merits of "system X uses too many dice because I can't fit them all in my hands at one time and they spill everywhere and then I stepped on a D4 and got tetanus." (That-that might have gotten away from me at the end there.) In any event, we can all get on the same page if we start defining  some rules for what makes a game balanced or unbalanced for the purposes of this discussion.

I wouldn't call it being "duped by advertisement". But simply a matter of offer and demand.

My demand is to play RPGs. If the offer in my 'local environment' is simply of D20 (be it D&D X edition, Pathfinder, or some other variant) I am either forced to play it, or not play any RPG at all. After a while, you grow so used to it (inertia is a HUGE factor in these things) that you just don't want to learn a whole new system/game. Regardless of the flaws you perceive in it.

I ran Age of Rebellion for a year and a half and that whole experience managed to turn me from thinking the narrative dice system was kind of neat into sort of hating it. It led to a lot of petty arguments at my table and I found it frankly unfun to GM after a time. I love Star Wars more than most people love their families, so I toughed it out for a while but at this point if I run a Star Wars game again I'll probably go back to Saga or WEG's d6. Whereas Roll and Keep has its issues, but I've also been running a game of L5R basically constantly for the better half of a decade now and am more fond of the system than I am any other I've played.
I really, really, really hope it isn't Genesys run (or has rules for both? Except last time we had a split ruleset we had L5R 2e which was garbage), but don't have too much hope. All the nu5R setting lore being in one nice consolidated spot will be useful if I ever want to run a game set outside of the weird canon my gametable has developed over the years as our own divergence from the AEG canon though.
I'm trying not to sound like I'm ******** hard over FFG here, I have really enjoyed what I've seen of the LCG and had a great time over the years with their 40k games which ran on a d100 system. I just am not a fan of the Genesys engine in the experiences I've had.

    More or less.

I decided I'd take a good look at the setting and, without regard to anyone else's sacred cows, come up with changes that' make things work better for me-
For starters- no Lion or Crane Clan. Hear me out.
Yes, I hate the Crane, but that's not why they get the axe- the thing is, as the two big piles of "default samurai," they really do nothing I need- all samurai worthy of the name should be capable of appreciating a tea ceremony, or mustering some basic martial know-how. The Lion and Crane as Clans are both "paragons" of stuff literally everyone should be doing as the basic cost of being a samurai.
The Akodo and the Kitsu remain, in a fashion, but I went totally scorched-earth on the Crane... and the Ikoma and Matsu are likewise gone.

This means that there is no super-dominant tradition of Iaijutsu- instead, you have the Mirumoto doing their Niten thing, but everyone else uses Iaijutsu as an agreed-upon social element.

For the hell of it, all Great Clans have five families. For Reasons.

So this means the Great Clans of My Rokugan and their component families are-
The Crab- Hida, Hiruma, Kuni, Kaiu, Yasuki. Very little changes with the Crab- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The Dragon- Togashi, Kitsuki, Mirumoto and Agasha families are all the same, more or less- and I add the Tonbo as a "proper" Courtier family to reflect a Dragon Clan who keep to themselves, but don't actually hide in the mountains for centuries on end. It's just that the Tonbo are the only Dragon most Rokugani will ever see... unless the Dragon seek to test their peers. The Dragon of my Rokugan are not Togashi's secret weapon- rather, they are self-appointed judges, trying to ascertain the karma of other Rokugani, keeping their isolation to avoid muddying the waters.
The Mantis- Yoritomo, Tsuruchi, Kasuga, Komori, Tsi. My Mantis are more about distance than storms- the Komori are their primary shugenja family, keeping ships at sea in contact with home and with each other. The Kasuga traffic with foreigners, while the Yoritomo stand ready to stomp those foreigners if they have to. The Tsi have perfected a technique to preserve steel from the salt air, and their mines on the mainland also produce the raw materials to shore up the Mantis Clan's trade with other Rokugani.
The Phoenix- Isawa, Shiba, Asako, Moshi, Kaeru. The Moshi and Kaeru are added to take some of the strain off of the poor Asako- the Kaeru serve as bean-counters, quartermasters, and a little bit of non-supernatural Phoenix shadiness. The Moshi are still primarily sun-venerating priestly types, but also pick up some of the courtly slack.
The Scorpion- Bayushi, Shosuro, Soshi, Yogo, Susumu- I added the Susumu to the Scorpion because they can provide a counterpoint to the Bayushi. I also have them go unmasked, because of course you can trust them, they're the honest brokers standing between those **** Baysuhi and the rest of Rokugan. Of course they are. Why would they lie?
The Unicorn- Shinjo, Iuchi, Ide, Utaku, Moto. The Unicorn aren't Mongols with Daisho- instead, they're Rokugani who keep tabs on the Yobanjin- and fight them off when need be. If the Crab keep out the Shadowlands, the Unicorn keep the Yobanjin out of Rokugan- but also fight beside them against anyone else who comes through their lands. The Moto keep their scimitar/outlander features because their status as samurai is meant to be a secret to the Yobanjin-the Moto move among them as equals.

The Minor Clans- In my Rokugan, Minor Clans are more common- but also tend to be quasi-vassals of Great Clans, which often use them as catspaws or proxies, or simply as sources of manpower or special skills they don't wish to cultivate... samples follow, but as a general rule, I'd be whipping up more to fill out the ranks.
The Badger- Ichiro. The Badger exist under the benevolent tolerance of the Unicorn, who often call upon them when they need small units of heavy infantry.
The Boar- Heichi. Tough, savage, and hard-hitting, the Boar are used by the Scorpion when an unsubtle face-smashing is called for.
The Eel- Anago. Keepers of extensive records and with a knack for being unobtrusive, the Eel clan sometimes help their Mantis allies disseminate- or stifle- foreign texts that enter via Mantis ports.
The Falcon- Toritaka. Their focus on the spirits of the dead puts the Falcon under the Phoenix's protection.
The Fox- Kitsune. Their ties to nature and the spirit realms mean the Fox also serve under the Phoenix's banners more often than not.
The Hare- Usagi and Ujina. Hunters of men, ruthless and pragmatic, the Hare are closely associated with the Crab... for those times when you want a Hiruma, but can't spare one.
The Moth- Honmushi- The sinister wardens of the Shinomen have been known to provide the Scorpion with information found in no known human record.
The Ox- Morito. Skilled light cavalry, the Ox are kept on retainer by the mountain-dwelling Dragon when they need to engage in more open terrain.
The Snake- Chuda. As specialists on hunting down witches, the Snake Clan typically serve the Crab
The Sparrow- Humble, hard-working, and thoughtful, the Sparrow serve the Dragon by providing a different point of view while still being Samurai.

    The Imperial Families:
Hantei, Otomo, Miya, Akodo, Kitsu. I fired the Seppun and gave their job to the two Lion families I saw the most need to preserve. The Kitsu's ancestral communion, in particular, seemed fitting for an Imperial Dynasty.

    tl;dr?

A weird little thought exercise I figured I'd post so I could track it down later.

Everyone is always ready to assume the worst, to assume that whoever is on the other side of the screen is a disgusting human being. No one is remotely willing to give people the benefit of the doubt - not just here, but in general everywhere.

That is the true tragedy - that in the haste to be the first to denounce something, or to be seen as virtuous, folks are so ready to trash everyone else without pausing a single minute to think, "hey, maybe the guy just made a mistake and didn't mean anything much". Such is the haste that, not content with raising the matter in the original reddit AMA, even after an apology has been made, the matter was raised in the l5r facebook group (until locked because it was devolving in pointless insulting back and forth) and now a ghost account is created here for... what? More of the same?
