  1. Surprised no mentioned Akodo Godaigo. He is also an exemplary example of a tainted Samurai not succumbing to being Lost and persuing an honorable finish despite the three cuts. More Spider should have been in his vein.
  2. Yeah, but just thinknof it like an investor's review. We might not buy stock, but we are invested. And really, talking behind their back is just rude
  3. I think you should be given a fair shake to continue, yes. As I have said elsewhere, you and your cohorts (including shawn?) tried hard to get engaged with us again. And you guys got blindsided. Those are not the people you toss.
  4. Not...really. unlike conquest, the clans are not inherantly opposed to working alongside each other. In conquest, all the factions are seeking just about all others' destruction with the Space marines and IG working together. The wheel was forced for sake of what made more sense in an otherwise non compatible set of factions. Even Spider has allies in other Clans (less so in Scorpion and Crab) Alliance and Oath of Fealty were more synergy cards for people splashing personality to obtain rare ebenfits that were clan exclusive.
  5. Actually, maybe going down the route of Minor Clans would be an interesting way to break the Clan lock on who gets promoted and how it plays.
  6. I wonder how much we have frightened FFG at this point with all our posts.
  7. This is why i prefer using less "level" structured mechanics when running L5R. Advancement in Rokugan is trickier.
  8. That...is a sticky one. Official OA set in Rokugan did. But Rokugan books did not.
  9. I think thematically, we can safely see the end of provinces and thier destructions. It made sense for the Clan War era. Not so much after. No one clan actually gained or lost territory with a few story driven exceptions after the Second Day of Thunder. Not to mention many could operate without a province to call thier own.
  10. True, and I not expecting anything till they start heading to the printers. But the article hopefully sheds some light on what we can expect. Which looks like good things.
  11. Though the link is "off topic", I think this shows a little more what FFG brings to design we can expect. Hopefully, we can see some of this after the new year. https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/9/21/ned-shagga-and-jaime-revisited/
  12. Considering they love doing design articles, I can safely assume we will not be in the dark.
  13. It should be a lot like the choose your adventure books, with votes tallied from smaller victors to choose a path divergence (perhaps with a bit of flavoring defined by certain metas, like taint). In all those books (and early l5r) the various endings already exist, the players as a whole just decide the particulars. Eg: Second Day of thunder had a victory already detailed out for each faction should they win. Presumably one vetted by everyone in charge of story and Brand. They would all know the fallout tesult and had planned accordingly for the next "story". It was modified obviously, but it worked.
  14. Story, interactive or not, drives later additions to the pool. Even a game like early magic did that. Otherwise, you just release a baae aet with no fuether additions.
  15. Also, the only clans that really saw value in it were the Pheonix (because they were a human first people) and the Dragon (because it talked thier boss down a tree, so to speak). Everyone either pays it lip service or twists it towards thier own ends if they do not outright ignore it.
  16. Even better question: If I am a new player, what is my draw to play Spider?"
  17. I think the problem thatvtried to be solved with the Colonies storyline waa to allownthe Spiders to be the Empire's monsters on a leash. The problem is without an external threat, the monstersbare either a punching bag or a serious threat. What can the Spider, as a whole, be that is not Covered either primarily or secondarily by another Great Clan?
  18. Again, the major problem with Daigotsu is that he is like all the other big Bosses. It's that short of Hitomi, he's the only one that basically broke the cycle of the setting, and it happened in such a way that anyone non-spider was insulted by it. Why, you might ask? Because it took something from everyone. Everyone. Samurai, daimyo, clan champions, Imperial inner circle, all the super secret police of all types, even the All Knowing Empress herself that can make everyone not Daigotsu tremble atvthe mere sound of her un-modified voice. It didn't just make Daigotsu the king of awesome. It made everyone else lesser in norder to do that, and at the expense of forcing a collective group of imbecilic clan representatives on the player base to try and find engaging. We didn't. Arguably, the Destroyer war was to show how the story can make everyone equally incompetant, to make the Spider shine. Further more, the out-monked the dragon, out-flanked the Unicorn, out ninja the Scorpion, politically outmanuever the Crane, metaphysically out performed the Pheonix. The Crab were rended impotent and taken out of the fight, theantis were...being Mantis and the Lion were late to the party. And then took a potentially redeeming moment of awesomness for Daigotsu and re-wrote it into blackmail. And again, thier the main motivation is to topple the empire in the name of Daigotsu. As a non-spider, i cannot find a reason to like them with all of that.
  19. Sounds like the Lying Darkness Scorpion. And...yeah. We didn't get a good deal.
  20. And really, no GM worth his salt would just throw in taint contamination willy-nilly. If you are going to risk the players' characters like that, you need to follow through and make sure it is worth it.
  21. That can still be done during actions on cards or personalities that can function outside combat for other results.( taking the favor, canceling another's action, etc)
  22. Becauseblove them or not, The Scorpion are part of a divine order. The Celestial Beauracracy. The Spider are not only "not" that, but are abhorrant to said Order and seek to overthrow basically anyone not Daigotsu Jigoku. That is the problem with Spider. Again, they need a motivation other than sticking it to the Heavans. If that is the case, I would prefer the Kolat.
  23. As i pointed out before, might be better as an option suring the combat phase. In mind's eye theatre, during a battle, two commanders/generals face off. The first part of every battle is the boasting from both sides in an attempt to intimidate the other army. Sometimea it works, sometimes is a stalemate. Then, during the heat of combat two "champions" square off to duel that no one dares inturrupt. A win could rally the troops and a loss demoralize and cause a route. Or the death of a beloved champion then spurs his men into berserker rage. Dueling needs to simulate that.
