37 minutes ago, BD Flory said:Nor does the lack of diversity, which is the point. If you truly value ideas, and can relate to the story and setting regardless of whether it is diverse or not -- which is the standard you've set for everyone else -- whether FFG'S take is more diverse shouldn't matter.
No one's suggesting FFG should add clans that don't already exist, or that people aren't arguing should be added already (like Mantis). No one's saying FFG needs to add more characters.
What you seem to be saying is that if some of those characters weren't Asian, you wouldn't connect as well to the story. But shouldn't you be valuing the ideas, and connecting to the setting and story regardless of how diverse it is? That's whay you're saying people should do, after all.
I'm not the one advocating for a change in setting. The burden is on you to prove that it improves the setting rather than dilutes it. In my experience with the game (20ish years at this point) it has been better received when it was focused on the rokugani more than the gaijin or nonhumans. There is a limited amount of time and resources FFG is going to have to spend fleshing out details and stories regarding this card game and the playerbase has a pretty insatiable thirst for it (to the point that weekly fictions weren't enough). Why should they widen the focus when they likely aren't going to have enough resources budgeted to focus on any individual clan to the satisfaction of that clans base? What does introduction of these other things do other than create the limitless lobbying for more (minor clans/ratling/naga/yobanjin/any other minor subfaction that has been introduced in the history of L5R) story inclusion? How can that NOT dilute the story of the 7 clans? There are only so many hours in a day for writing and only so many resources FFG is going to be willing to devote to writing free fiction.

There's nothing mutually exclusive about diversity and the exploration of ideas. Indeed, properly exploring ideas requires many perspectives.
I simply don't feel being more diverse adds literally anything productive to the game or story. There are already 7 clans that are going to be jockeying for story time, everyones going to have their favorite characters they'd rather see featured in stories. More has universally not been better for the story when added to this game historically.

Show any specifics relating users you presume to be men to an expressed fear of losing images of unspecified fictional females you've labeled "eye candy". Funny choice of words on your part.
Or just make more lazy statements.
Individual responses and anecdotes aren't necessarily evidence.
This has a few good points.
One of my biggest frustrations in these conversations are that people take like...no care to parse their statements and come off like they're speaking for all of a demographic. Its ok to speak only for yourself, fluffing your positions with "women feel/dont feel" or "POC feel/need/dont feel" just opens you up to getting slapped down when a member of the group you presume to speak for disagrees with you.
Your positions dont weaken on a matter of opinion if you only speak for yourself, but your credibility suffers when you presume to speak for a group and a member of that group contradicts you.
Maybe people should just say you're not a fan of whatever style of art. Or that overuse of certain styles annoys you or makes you less inclined to play the game. But also maybe allow everyone the agency to chime in and speak for themselves rather than having the temerity to make broad statements about the opinions and feelings held by a large diverse group of people. Less egg on the face when the inevitable contradiction from someone you presumed to speak for comes.

I'm just saying that if they did include a few people from other racial backgrounds, into places where they logicly could concurr, into L5R we don't have to consider the complete setting an unappetizing mess.
Do I ask for it? Do I want it? Do I care if they do or don't? Not really, the setting has been retconned throughout it's history, every one of us has a diffrent mental image of Rokugan in our mind anyway and even those aren't constant. But if they would do it there are oppertunties in the setting where they could be included.
If you were playing a L5R rpg would you walk out of the game if the dm decided to add some Saracen, Parthian, Persian, Egyptian or even Baktrian elements to the Unicorn?
No but neither do i see a need for the setting to change to accommodate it. For the most part foreigners who wander into the empire are killed.
But. Burning sands has the egyptian mideastern cultures, the ivory kingdoms and naga represent a fantastic view of india. Merinae and thrane represented europe. The problem is all these cultures are enemies, with strictly controlled diplomatic contact restricted to 2 different clans by imperial decree. All of these things exist in setting, are handled in setting, and are footnotes at best in the story of the rokugani empire.

Hoturi turning into a black Hotaru, I concur, would be something else.
Themes and settings are like cooking, trying to add a little of everything usually turns it into an unappetizing mess.

Just now, Danwarr said:I mean, you talking about a sexiest man alive contest for a magazine, what is anyone else expecting? Big and strong has been the male ideal for most cultures going back to ancient civilizations.
And somewhat unsurprisingly the male "ideal" dovetails in with what (im not going to throw out a term like most here ) a significant chunk of the female population finds attractive. Which erodes the argument that its all about male power fantasy, an argument that kind of negates the concept of women as sexual beings with their own desires and attractions. All this completely ignoring the idea of what gay men may or may not find attractive as well.

2 minutes ago, Danwarr said:Average height in the US is 5'9", average height for white non-Hispanic males in the US is 5'10". My apologies for the previous incorrect figure.
Either way, I don't understand why this is an issue at all.
Because every single one of the people on the sexiest men alive list in the past 10 years is overall larger and more toned/muscular than most of the people of their demographic and the general argument seems to be that if they're big and muscular it must be a male power fantasy?
Edit: also dave willis as an argument? Really?

Its a setting where long used familiar heirlooms literally awaken their spirit and become magic items. Of course the family sword is emphasized heavily.
-
No, average height of a white male in america is 5'9.

1 minute ago, Danwarr said:Matt Damon and Johnny Depp are both 5'10" I guess, but yes, generally the Sexist Man Alive is around a 6' average height which is the average height for white males in the US.
5'9" actually

Just now, Yogo Gohei said:To clarify, I was responding to something pretty specific above. I could have been clearer. Obviously "sexiest man alive" is going to be a pretty good looking guy who is in pretty awesome shape.
Has that ever really described Johnny Depp? How the heck did he get in there?
He's almost 6 feet tall and actually in pretty good shape for someone in his fifties, plus coasting off being a teen heartthrob throughout the 80's and 90's.

How many of the men on that list fit the "Muscle bound, arms as big as tree trunks, stoic men" stereotype? The only one I notice is "The Rock". Maaaaybe Chris Hemsworth, but that's reaching a bit.
Everyone else... not so much.
Everyone on that list for the past 10+ years has had a sculpted well toned physique.
Edit: The only one in the last 10 years shorter than 6' tall is johnny depp, who is almost 6' tall.
-
Sexy, skinny, scantily clad women are a male power fantasy.
Muscle bound, arms as big as tree trunks, stoic men are also a male power fantasy.Hate to break it to you but there are lots of women out there who like looking at sexy skinny scantily clad women, and lots of women who like musclebound arms big as tree trunks stoic men too.

Changing the story of the characters we know, and introducing new characters is exactly what they need to do to attract new players and attract old players back. And I think attracting new players is what you need to succeed, not pulling back the old crowd.
There is a subset of the old crowd whose return and presence would in fact be an active hindrance to the success of the game

Crab is G/W in playstyle for the most part.
Either swarmy or big beefy creatures with resistances, if you treat holdings as an analogue for Enchantments (not creature enchantments) it seems likely to hold true in the LCG
-
Clan loyalty somehow manages to be both the greatest and most cancerous aspect of the l5r property.
-
Eh, i like things like draft and sealed so i prefer the CCG model. LCG's aren't bad though and this version might get my money if it looks like the scene shows back up in my area.
-
Old dueling rules were hot garbage anyway, through every incarnation of the game it was either ineffective, or might as well be an unconditional kill card, or enabled you to mill your deck better than any CCG ever prior.

I blame ToE for most of how lotus turned out. It was definitely an arc where power levels were up to 11, but ToE cards were the worst part of it.

There really is, whenever you advocate for changing something you kind of have to have a reason why it should be done.
