Good to know. In Japanese you would have a "i" followed "sh" so Nerishima would at least sound Japanese, and I can't help but pronouncing it this way.

But it makes sense that they took his name one to one. I will make sure to add this to the Trivia on the wiki.

He was an RPG character if I recall. He was a really badass card in the never released Crane Yojimbo Honor Deck, and he was also going to be the Topaz Champion. Not sure if they will keep the Topaz Champ part intact.

  2. The lowest time for me as a player was definitely the tail end of Lotus Edition. It was the one time I took a break from the game until the new arc started. It was just a little too much for me at the time. I enjoyed the insanity of Lotus to a point, but eventually it got a bit out of hand, and it killed off a LOT of our local player base in the process.

As a designer, the lowest point for me was probably the Susumu Sensei that was released. Without getting into too fine a bit of detail, what came out was absolutely not what I had wanted for them, and I knew that the Spider community had really wanted it and I wanted it to be good. Even though I fought hard against the version that came out, I always think I could have perhaps done more, and I still consider it a personal failing.

For the game overall, the lowest point was probably the time after Jade, when we all assumed the game was dead and gone after WoTC ditched it, and we existed in limbo until AEG surprised everyone by buying it back.

  3. Kudos for Daidoji Nerishma being a named card. I know there was probably limited space for named characters and so many others that probably are a million times more iconic (if they still exist) from this time period, but Nerishma was a planned tribute card in Onyx Edition for someone who had passed away, so it was very decent of them to go ahead and print him. As someone who made the original Nerishma that won't see the light of day, this is the type of thing that makes me believe that the best aspects of this game community continue on in new hands.

    "But..."

"No buts! All that will accomplish is establishing a blood feud for generations to come, and prop up your own personal glory! If you really wished to end this conflict without bloodshed you'd have trained as a courtier so we could negotiate our way out of this mess!"

    "As you wish, my Lord."

"Are you being dutiful? What is with you today? I hope nobody saw that! Now let's have this battle where hundreds or thousands of us kill each other, which shouldn't spark any blood feuds at all."

Maybe you were dueling for selfish reasons, most duels are for selfish reasons. Inflating yourself and acting out of accordance with your Daiymo might be glorious but it is not dutiful and is not honorable. Honorable actions can also be quite dishonorable. Hence be paradox that is the Scorpion. Dueling is inherently selfish...

"If I challenge their commander to a duel and defeat him, we can end this conflict without further loss of life or damage."

    "Stop being so selfish!"

  6. A story arc I wanted to pursue but never happened was having democratic/socialist revolutionaries as the arc 'villains'. I mean, the clash between feudal and 'modern' government is pretty much classic samurai, and it's always interesting to have a charismatic, idealistic antagonist whose goals, while noble to modern western audiences, are considered pretty horrible by Rokugan.

    Doji Shizue

An unmatched, Crane storyteller that teaches a Lion that honor has value through sacrifice.

I wonder if they will still keep her club footed?

For that matter, I wonder if any of the others will keep their infirmities (particularly Shoju, who I believe was both ugly and had at least a partially crippled arm, if I remember)

  8. If they want to keep it with the 'important' people, it would be Kakita Yoshi or Toshimoko. However, I think I saw Daidoji Nerishma as a named card, which I hope is correct, as he was a memorial card request meant to honor a player that had passed away. He was supposed to be in the first Onyx Expansion. It would be nice if FFG decided to keep that in.

Awwww. There were some very good pieces there too. :(

It's one of the reasons why, if we ever did a Soul of someone from Clan Wars/Hidden Emperor, they either got new art, or we just made someone else that was sort of like that card but different, since we were going to have to do new art anyway.

(One of the the reasons for Soul of Personalities was budgetary, we only had allotments in the base set for so many new art pieces, so we had to reprint old cards. It's part of what made base set design such a pain, because we'd be forced to use X number of reprints even though often these new base sets were trying to establish new or different archetypes or playstyles. Before we shut down, there was even flirting with reprints in expansions, as the second Onyx Expansion was going to have a reprint of Obsidian Mine in it).

And since we are talking about removal, why the mighty Rising Sun Blade has been demoted to a generic (since it only costs only 1 Fate I guess) sword... :P

The amount of reused art assets (or art assets from the unreleased Onyx sets) is pretty high, but then they did buy ALL the L5R art AEG owned.

Which, if you didn't know, doesn't include any of the art from the Clan War or Hidden Emperor arcs, since AEG didn't own them anymore.
