  1. Funny, I personally find the art matching. The tiles have the same blandness as the character style, but that’s just my opinion ;)

still curious about the gameplay, not that I would buy this version... but with this pricetag, they must be very confident about something within this game..

I’m betting on Bardsung at the moment, but that will have to wait for some time before that game is released.

I was on the same boat. Disappointed in the new Descent reveal so I headed to the kickstarter in search of a good dungeon crawler. I found Bardsung and actually made a pledge of 100 £, but after watching various videos on yt, I quickly reduced it to 1 £. In all 5 or 6 videos the same thing happens: heroes explore a tile and get rushed by the monsters and the games bogs down. Also, not in single one of those videos have I seen the mysterious wandering monsters which fuel the stretch goals. Beacuse it's luck based you may never see a wandering monster in the entire game.

Long story short, I continued my search and found Cronicles of Drunagor. It looks so promising I preordered it from a retailer cos I missed the kickstarter.

I like your idea about despair tokens but I agree with leewroy that melee and ranged should be treated the same.

Yea I totally get you there. The thing is with the YT videos is that they only explain the small basic of the game and there was some real bad luck with the rolled dice. But then I thought about it, and descent isn’t that different, you only get to upgrade your dice a bit and learn some abilities and start from point A and get to a certain goal. I’m not trying to justify the project, but I think there is some good potential. This game is clearly in the early stage of development and its a big plus they kind of listening to the community.

but ones I have some time, I’ll try the despair system. Unless somebody outruns me with it 😛

  3. After "my personal' disappointment on the announcement of a new Descent product I went looking for something else. I came across a Kickstarter project, Bardsung. Bardsung has a lot of resemblance to descent as a dungeon crawler and in my opinion has a lot of potential as in its lore and gameplay mechanics.

But this game has the same element what frustrates me with most dungeon crawler board games: Luck. Don’t get me wrong, I truly love throwing dice, but within this system it doesn’t matter how strong you are, if you roll a miss, it’s a miss. And sure that’s part of the game and I get that. But sometimes you miss multiple times what gives away the feeling of being a strong buildup character.

So after learning about the combat system on this project I thought about a system (which I shared with the creators) that could also be applied to Descent. So here is my thought about ‘Despair’ in Descent:

Every time a hero rolls a X, that hero gets one despair token, up to 3 tokens max. Depending of what type of character you are, you can activate the despair ability with yet another miss, so an action out of despair. The extra action will look like this:

Melee attack: If you miss, you may discard 3 despair tokens to make the attack a hit. This can only by activated when you have 3 tokens. 3 tokens will give you 2 hearts/hit points, add this to the rest of the result. discard the tokens.
magic attack: after a miss, Discard 3 tokens to make another magic attack. Discard the tokens after this attack. If this attack is again a miss, no new despair tokens are added to the hero chart for this attack.
Ranged attack: If an attack is missed, discard 3 tokens to get: 1+ range and +1 heart/hit point to the attack.

If a hero takes a rest action, alle despair tokens are to be discarded from that character sheet.

    Overlord:
I haven’t got a lot of experience with OL gameplay, but for this roll I was thinking of something like: Every attack that misses, the OL gets a despair token, 5 tokens max. If he has 5 tokens (maybe this needs to be more), he can draw an OL card from his deck to his hand. Discard the despair tokens.

What are your thought about this? Is this a suitible mechanic to apply to the gameplay?

    Cheers!

I actually heard about Descent for the fist time two months ago.  Since  corona, my family and I got into boardgaming.  I saw a copy of Descent at the local gameshop and at home I immediately searched the internet.  A couple of weeks later I learned about Legends oft the Dark.  In my opinion, with my fresh point of view, I must say this game looks overwhelmingly awesome to me.  What really shocked me though, was the amount of negativity about it on all kinds of forums.  To me, it all sounds a little bit like the way my mom reacted when I was 16 years old and started playing my metal and punk tapes really loud.  I get that, when you like a game realy much, you want the publisher to keep creating content.  But for new potential buyers, like me, it is only normal that new games are going to be developed.  I really hope the best for this NEW game (whitch is not the 3rd edition to your beloved Descent 2nd).  FFG is a company.  Companies have to make money in order to stay a company.  With money the make new things.  With money they improve and support older products as well.  So I guess it would be a great idea to positively stimulate new products that create new revenue, and maybe lead to improvement and support for older products.  For me, ...  I've already preordered my copy.  I paid 140 euro.  That's about 165 dollars.  Most big kickstarter games are more expensive.  So what's the fuzz?

Ow I have embraced it already, by not going for this version* of descent en spend my money elsewhere ;). I’m glad this is something for you, i hope this will gives your money right.

a small note om your point of cost tho. With most big kickstarter projects you get a complete game to play for that amount of money. What could make it more expensive is de FOMO of the addons, which is great marketing. But most titels will give a sh*tload of campaignplay with just the base game and not just the first act...

and the fuzz.. well I guess you aim on all the individuel opinions of the game so far. Well I respect them, the pro and con people, including yours that will get the game. I personally would wait with preordering before I have seen some more gameplay. But thats me.

again, I hope this game will bring you the joy you experiencing now!
Ow and thanks for calling me a nag😘

    • Changing magic system by a special icon, like it was in D1 because it is nothing special in descent to use magic, finally (my only real addition point in fact)

Could you explain on how this system works? I like the idea. Maybe there is a way to produce new kind of dies to implement this concept? (battle dies and magic dies with the same color) so you don't have to mess with the current art for dies on the cards.

    - I would like to see a darker artwork than the current 2ed. Don't get me wrong, I really like the current art, but its not real 'descent journey in the dark' style :P. Think about the GW warhammer fantasy 6th edition style.

    - Different approach on magic use, heavier damage, expensive to use (maybe 1 attack per round, something like that).

    - Get rid of the X on the dice! I heard IA had a better system.

    - 2 kind of difficulties, normal/hard with the rules and possibilities for monsters and hero's.

    - A tracker for monster health.

    - Miniature terrain.

    - more indepth character/class narrative. Implement their stories in the main, or make side-quest for them.

  6. Aaah yes achievements! Not sure about that, then the overlord need to get them to of course. But it’s just an extra for gameplay, but no extra missions :(.

We could first start with the first 24 standard classes. After that the hybrids. 24 is a lot of work but manageable.

it would be cool if they eventually can be intergraded in the app as a solo quest or something. For the people that play alone and just want to do a single quest

  7. Yep the original looks IMO better. Shame I don’t have the time to work on this. It’s been a while since I used blender, or else I could try to model Glyr and make a STL file out of him. Maybe in the beginning of next year I have some spare time to try this.

photoshop Is currently not in my software packages😋 or else the fix up would be easy to do. Well it could be interesting to model those 4 missing models so us diehard fans can get them printed. If FFG plans to let this version die, then we’ll have to pick up where they left ^^

  8. Thx!
Well the rewards could be anything, from special items (scout type), big amounts of gold (dwarf types), Special weapon (warrior) to extra experience point (elf types). Standard more fatigue (all types), extra dice for magic attacks (mage) You name it! The more variety, the better of course. Intergrading it to the app is easy. With 1 to the rest, the OL needs the get a big advance if they fail (risk of choosing a character based quest).

  9. An idea I always had was something for RtL and was hoping FFG would integrated something like that into the game:

every character has a background story that can be triggered in a campaign. So if you choose 2/4 characters, there personal quest may pop up, but you have to choose wisely because choosing one eliminates the others. And every story has a benefit for the team if completed successfully.

so basically, there has to be 1 mission per character available. That is a lot to produce, but the replay-ability will be huge by it.

maybe you can implement this into your work or something. Goodluck and curious to see what you have up your sleeve!

    cheers!

  10. Here is an idea for FFG/Asmodeena,

They should launch a second product on the launch day of Descent legends of the dark! How about product DJ06...? You know, the missing item on descent journey in the dark. This way we all win, FFG, the fans, the new fans, all!

And by this way they can measure support on both products. From there they can work on whoever sells best, so they can continue on Descent 2de edition.. I mean the Descent who gets the most support. Win for us, win (and profit) for them! I’m Just saying :P

I wish they would read more what there customers write...

Anyway just wanted to share this idea with you guys!

    cheers

  11. Yes they should have called it: Terrinoth, legend of the dark, or something like that. The reason they have used descent is probably the get the attention of de Descent fans, like said by Skyhunterd.

The thing is, descent fans wanted more physical content for the 2e, and have asked for it for years, with no reaction what so ever by FFG (with exception of Lost Legends).

And now they show this. And to sum up all the critic: they haven’t listened to the fans. I think descent 2e was in most way almost perfect, it could use some tweakt now and there, like the dice system, but overall its good!

But the use of the word Descent could backfire on them, they hyped it so much with that, that a lot of fans will turn there back on FFG.

I have accepted that this will not be in my collection. I’m curious on how long the support will be there for this game and how well it will sell.

    cheers!

  12. Who agreed on the artwork... I’m out of words! The style is a direct copy of CMON games as Zombicide and stuff. And the art work on the tiles!? That’s a direct downgrade compare to other FFG games as IA and D2e... like they had a deadline to make or something :P. But this doesn’t feels like FFG at all

I like the app in other games as addon, but this might be too app driven. And I still like the board game as a board game.

anyway I’ll stop complaining, I’m out for sure.. 200% sure after I saw the price!

sorry for being negative. But I hope the enthusiast among us get what they want.

cheers! (Hopefully FFG doesn’t read this topic.. Some may have some sleepless nights :P)

  13. What is this? If this is the new descent i’m already out! It looks cheap... the tiles.. all the same (thus far). All the cardboard terrain stuff... nope. And the illustration oO... did a intern draw them? And whats with the big cardboard monster?

just nope... not looking good for me. Glad that I got my 2e complete.

will still watch the stream! Maybe.... just maybe..

  14. What if they would release a physical (prefer big) box within it a campaign for players vs overlord but also convert this campaign to the RtL app for co-op? (Like some people did with The Shadow Rune)..

That would be a true blow for FFG sales, both sides would be happy (some double happy). That would be a very interesting move....

so Fantasy Flight Games, what would you say? Give it a try! :P
