So, I have a minorly connected question.  I’m planning on buying this and Genesys, but how does magic work in this system?  Looks like the various types of magic are linked to a skill, but how do you determine spells/effects/magical ability?

    Essentially, invocations are:
Prayer + Offering + Request to Kami of choice, followed by instruction "get 'im, Kevin"*.
Offerings aren't vital but make things easier, whilst scrolls and potions essentially allow pre-prepared 'bottled invocations', and Unicorn talisman are...part-cast invocations tied to the name of a specific kami, as I understand it.
Essentially, Dr Strange/Naruto-esque air-drawn magic sigils are possible, but more if you're very gifted and have a strong connection to the kami. The more 'normal' you are - if such a word applies to shujenga - the more you need offerings and scrolls to achieve anything. It's the same way that low level kakita duelists start out as straight-out-of-a-musashi film mundane duellists and end up doing stuff that looks like it escaped from Crouching Tiger or 47 Ronin at rank 6.
The fiction Repentance Does Not Come First features a shujenga duel and is the best thing I can point you at.

    * Kami  may not actually be called Kevin.

You can also confine the campaign to a single city and 1-2 days’ ride away.

Yup. Loved the “places” chapter of 4e.

The L5R wiki could fill in a gap for the time being.  The other options are
    1) Start your game with a Winter Court.  Winter Court a group will spend the winter months in one of the keeps and it surrounding villages.  It will need to be a courtly intrigue or mystery adventure but those are fun, and the hostile winter gives a reason why they can’t venture far.
    2) Carpenter Wall adventure.  The players are representing their clan at the wall.  They can venture in the shadowlands, wheel and deal with the crab and the Yasuki family.  This will be more of a combat style game, but you don’t have to worry about the Shadowlands geography changing.  It’s a land twisted by Oni and evil.

Togashi monks are specifically not retired samurai.  They are 'monks' rather than monks, if that makes sense.  Anyone who manages to go to the High House of Light and persuades the Dragon Clan Champion to let them be tattooed with magic ink (which may literally have the blood of the clan founder in it) becomes a Togashi (of his blood).  At that point they are considered descended from the Kami, and thus part of the Samurai caste.  But they rarely have official positions within the clan hierarchy, hence why, in the fiction, Togashi Mitsu, Yokuni's chosen heir, theoretically reports to Mirumoto Hitomi, the officer in charge of the military expedition.
    Thus
    1)  Recognised as Samurai caste, but not often in anyone's chain of command.  Their self-driven path to enlightenment can lead them to do all sorts of things for the Clan.
    2)  Samurai, but with the mechanics of Monks (kiho).  Other clan monks would be the same, like the Kaito and possibly some Asako in the future.  When being part of a monastic family, they don't give up their rank.
    3)  It's very rare.  However, PCs are generally considered to be the sorts of people who do rare things.  Most people will never meet one.
    4)  Yes.  It depends on the monk.  I could imagine sending a Togashi to Winter Court in Kyuden Bayushi as a courtier and their own yojimbo combined.

I’m at work, so I can’t give you the answer you’d like right now, but I’ll say this: in being confused, you’re in good company with the entire rest of Rokugan!

You could write up a little cheat sheet for some of the etiquette bits.  When I do setting rich, I'll write up a quick paragraph for each of the major factions and the general politics/people that would be commonly known.

It seems like even among the community there are different interpretations of them.   Seems like this is a bigger can of worms than I thought.
@llamaman88 thanks for the wiki link.  It really didn't help me out for this question, but it's opened up a lot more understanding about a ton of other Rokugani topics.  Thank you for posting it!

I also appreciate everyone's input into helping me try and understand these guys.

So other possibility, the Core Rulebook includes guidelines to making you own minor clan.

Characters can purchase ninjitsu techniques if they're listed specifically in the technique categories for schools, or on the curricula tables as exceptions.
In other words, if you can have them, it says so on your school page.

Example; The Storm Fleet sailor can't buy Ninjutsu, only Kata Shuji and Rituals, with the exception of the Skulk Ninjutsu, which tey can buy at their Rank 1.

Got my book. Page 56 says to choose a school within your clan, but if you want to have a different school, work out the circumstances with your GM.

I was under the impression that in this edition you didn’t needed an advantage to do that, at least in the Beta it was like that. You just presented in your backstory and if fitted your character you have it, just like Wyrmdog said.
I can confirm if this is the case on the Core on Thursday when my copy arrives...

“Innumerable”from a Great Clan perspective.  They may be organized and slightly better than ronin rabble, but they aren’t worth much concern.
That’s a fairly common belief among the great clans during AEG years anyway.  Most of the Greats didn’t respect or concern themselves with the minor clans.  So, from a certain point of view, it may be “Innumerable”.

So, page 18 of the beginner box rule book says "In addition to the seven great clans and the imperial families, there are innumerable minor clans of samurai throughout Rokugan..." Not sure how much to believe this, but it's in official material so /shrug

I think "inumerable" is a...questionable choice of word there. There are some Minor Clans, but they are a long way short of being "inumerable".
