  1. Updated haves and wants after recent trading:

    Have for trade:

1x TFA Falcon (intending ship model only, but can dig up 1st edition dial, ship tokens, and pilot cards if need be, also may have some 2nd ed. rebels materials that could be used with it from the Rebel Conversion Kit - let me know what you need and I'll see if I have it)

3x T70 X-Wings - 2 of these are the blue colour scheme and 1 is the 'Black One' scheme from 'Heroes of the Resistance' or whatever it was called.  (intending ship models only, but can probably dig up some 1st edition materials for these if someone needs them)

1x Stolen TIE (intending ship model only, but let me know what you need from 1st or second ed. and I can prolly dig it up {I'd prefer to keep the dial though, as I don't have imperial dials for all of my TIEs despite having two Imperial conversion kits})

1x VCX-100 - I've painted this!  I didn't like the yellow bits, so I painted grey over them.  Then I did rather a lot of weathering, scorch-marking, and fluid leaking on it.  (intending ship model only, but can dig up 1st and/or 2nd ed. materials if someone needs them)

1x Attack Shuttle (intending ship model only, but can dig up 1st and/or 2nd ed. materials if someone needs them)

1x TIE Punisher (intending ship model only, but let me know what you need from 1st or second ed. and I can prolly dig it up)

2x TIE Strikers (intending ship model only, but let me know what you need from 1st or second ed. and I can prolly dig it up)

From conversion kits:  various conversion bits for the less common Imperial, Rebel, and Scum ships (no TIE Fighters, Bombers, nor Interceptors; no X-, Y-, B-, nor A-Wings) and some commonly used large ships, as I own only 1 (or none) of each of those.  Let me know what you need.

    Want:

4-5x  Rebel A-Wings, preferably all with matching colour scheme, but doesn't matter which one (ship models only)

    1x B-Wing (ship model only)

    1-3x huge ship resource trackers

That depends on your new player doesn't it? Well employed older guy who loved Star Wars as a kid who decided he can afford a hobby now that he's done paying alimony and child support is different than family man and his twelve year-old wanting to play. Neither is a clear best option. They both have their pros and cons. And the choice isn't solely your own even if you just want to play with one or two other guys at home.

Point taken that new players are all different.  However, they do all have one thing in common - they are new.

I'm not knocking Hyperspace as a format (though I have no interest in it myself); I'm sure it's great for the people for whom it's great - serious and frequent players who want a periodic shake-up of the metagame and fine balance adjustments.  I don't think that new players care about that stuff (though they may become interested as they become more involved with the game).

And I'd be sore put-off if, as someone who just saw the game and was drawn into it, I just bought Bossk or General Grievous because maybe one of those is my favourite character, only to be told that I can't play them because they aren't Hyperspace legal.  I think that if one is trying to 'start a scene' and generate initial interest in the game, he should cast his Conner net of pew-pew-fun wide.

So I'm thinking ok, time for me to step up and create a xwing scene at flgs...

    ...

But really, I am asking based on the above discussion..let's say I wanted to get myself and others back into this game...what format?

    Who's points?

It seems to me that if you're looking to create a scene from scratch, which undertaking would presumably include casual, new, and/or occasional players, then Extended is your clear best option.  (So-called 'Extended' is really just X-Wing!).  Folks that are interested can then play with any ships that they have or that pique their interest and list-building will be simple.  Cool models, Star Wars theme, and simple fun are the things that drew many to the game to begin with.

  5. Yes, I meant a wing as defined in the epic rules.

There are restrictions for building a wing (usually all of the ships in the wing have to be of the same type, except that Empire and First Order wing leaders can choose to have an escort of TIE/ln, TIE/fo, or TIE/sf wingmen instead), but there are benefits as well, mostly related to action economy, ease of maintaining formation, and damage distribution (wings also simplify and speed things up a lot when there are many ships on the table).  I like Epic and huge ships, but I like the wing rules so much that I'm thinking of using them in smaller games - wing vs. wing - and also Epic games with no huge ships, where all or most of the ships are organized into wings.

  6. I've been fiddling around trying to build a Vader wing and have only come up with this:

    Darth Vader (67)
        Hate (3)
        Fire-Control System (2)
        Afterburners (6)
        Agent of the Empire (4)

Ship total: 82  Half Points: 41  Threshold: 3

    Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23  Half Points: 12  Threshold: 2

    Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23  Half Points: 12  Threshold: 2

    Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23  Half Points: 12  Threshold: 2

    Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23  Half Points: 12  Threshold: 2

    Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23  Half Points: 12  Threshold: 2

    Total: 197

Not exactly inspired, but I don't really see any better options for the Dark Lord than the max amount of damage soaking and max number of blockers.  With Vader at 82 pts there doesn't seem to be room for Howlrunner plus enough other TIEs to make use of her ability.  A bodyguard of elite TIEs doesn't seem to be as good at protecting Vader as running a full-sized wing of mooks.  The wingmen would split from the wing when needing to move at I1 for blocking and then rejoin, as able, in order to benefit from Vader's barrel rolls and afterburners.

  7. You have 200 points to spend, as usual, but your entire list must be built as a single wing.  All Extended pilots are allowed.  What's your list?

EDIT:  To be clear, your opponent would face the same restrictions; it would be wing vs. wing.

Sad the print book is out of stock.

My son is on the younger side but LOVES board/tabletop games (we frequently play a simplified armada together) and also loves toy cars and has a huge collection. This SEEMS like a perfect gateway for him to play a more fully realized version of a table game. Those of you that have it/tried it, what are your thoughts?

    Amazon has it.

I've received my copy and still think it looks really fun, but I haven't gotten to play any games yet.

  9. What's a good oil wash?

I have a Chimaera ISD model, that I've listed in the trade thread, that I'm trying to trade for a standard ISD model, but I don't have any takers so far.  I'm afraid that I might have to try painting it to match my own standard one.  I don't relish the task, as I'd rather spend the time painting squadrons, so I'd like to save some time by getting a good, even wash.

  10. Origins and prequels are a mistake when they suck the mystique out of characters who should retain it.

Some folks can't understand what's so awesome about Boba Fett.  Why is he so popular?  He does little and says even less.  The answer is mystique.  A mysterious fellow in really cool looking armour and a cool ship, with lots of gadgets and tricks, whose face is never seen, who gets the better of Han.  He has to be awesome!  One's imagination fills in his past and motivations.  Seeing him as a little kid just ruins all of that.  Boba Fett was never a kid!

Same for Han.  I don't want to know the details of his scoundrel past.  My imagination can run wild unless I accept the events of this new movie, which I likely won't.

  11. I suppose that you probably want to keep a decent bid, since you're using a boarding party, but you might consider changing Jerry out for Screed.  You've got black dice for him to work with on all three ships and, while Jerry is nice, I'm not sure that you have any ships that need his help.  Or, perhaps Motti.
