  1. And backing out of engaged may not always be possible.  The PCs have their back against a real wall (maybe the blast door shut closed) and the enemies moved up to engage them, inorder to disengage they would need to move through them and past the group hanging back a bit.  Requiring 3 maneuvers to get past them all to be able to shoot engaged (1 to leave the first group, 1 to move through the second and the last to be clear of them).

     

    Remember that with no grid, you need to be realistic when thinking about the PCs and NPCs position and use a bit of common sense.  Like with Grenades, I rarely let more then 1 or 2 things be in the blast range, unless they are in something like a ship corridor or the PCs have said that they are all taking position by the air lock.....


  2. The ting to keep in mind with Light side to dark side transfer is that people rarely if ever move from being a "good" person to a paragon of evil in 1 simple step (or any strongly held value).  It is a longer process that involves minor compromises or transgressions (that can be rationalized as being "worth it" to accomplish the goal at hand) at first, then slightly more difficult ones and so on up until they are capable of truly evil acts.  Remember the old adage "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

     

    For example,

     

    Most (if not all) of the serial killers do not start with killing humans.  It often starts when they are younger with small animals, like squirrels, rabbits, stray cats and gradually moves to larger animals like dogs then to humans.

     

    So rather then tempt the player directly with Darth Badass taunting him "Kill your friends and join me with the ultimate power!", which will not work in 95% of the cases with anyone.  Rather have him work through intermediaries (or even him in disguise like Palaptine/ Sidious did) putting him in situations where it will be easy to give into anger/ hatred to to accomplish his goal (Ani killing the Tuskan Raider settlement to save his mother, he views them as a step up from animals) and so on. 


  3. Watch the original "Red Dawn".  Pay attention to what the invaders do to the civilian population:  Mass execution style shootings/ Mass Graves, looting of the local resources, detaining people for no reason. 

     

    Also, read up on what various communist regimes have done to their civilian populations.  Like Stalin and the forced labor camps and execution of the farmers, Pol-Pot and the Cambodian Killing Fields.  Mao rounding up intellectuals and sending them to work camps.

     

    Have the PCs observe one or many of them or even start en media res, where the PCs are waiting in ambush having watched several "un-reeducationable" people having dug a large pit and they are now kneeling down with several armed Imperial army/ Navy troops watching over them.  Then the party spots them wheeling out an light repeating blaster and about to shoot the detainees in the back....

I was running an L5R game and was using this village that AEG produced as the focus of the campaign (It was sort of like the old Village of Hommlet module).  Well in the village there was an old abandoned building that the locals thought was haunted (it was not) and had placed wards to fend off the evil spirits.  Well the PCs being PCs assumed that that was the source of the evil that they encountered and tried to break into it 3 times (each time having a Scooby-Doo run out of the building scared moments). 

     

    Needless to say, that this was derailing what I had intended for the campaign, so I had to deal with it.  So I had the local village headman (head-woman actually) get up a work crew and start demolishing the building.  The PCs were indignant about this and confronted her and demanded that they stop "In the Name of the Emperor" (as they were imperial magistrates).  The head woman politely, but sternly replied:

     

    "Honorable Magistrates, I am honored that you wish to preserve this old building.  However, it has been abandoned for more years then I have been alive and it is in danger of falling down.  It also poses a big fire threat, which would be disastrous to the village should it happen to catch fire as it is so close to many buildings (including the one you are staying in).  Just imagine what would have happened if the bandits that attacked a few days ago had been using fire arrows.

     

    I am sure that the Emperor would rather have this old decaying, fire trap of a building torn down so we can reuse this land parcel for something productive that would generate taxes.  Would you not agree?"

     

    With that all of the player's jaws dropped and they shook their heads in agreement....


  5. With your particular list, you have an option that does both.

     

    You can simply start the session with the PCs in Jail and then being offered their freedom in exchange for being informants and then let them go on with their original mission.

     

    A step up with this is to start the session with them in Jail and set the mood with a montage description of them being interrogated by the locals and then wait for one of them to say "Just how did we get here?"  Then you can go back to them meeting the crime lord and doing the leg work and let them get picked up by the fuzz.  You may need to make the encounter a bit tougher and put them in a situation where they cannot easily run away (make sure the cops are using stun settings).


  6. Also, the system makes the assumption that the character have a good basic "users" knowledge of the universe.  Most people know some random tidbit of information about a lot of things like:

     

    LA is big and in California and has Hollywood as a suburb

    New York City is made up of 5 smaller cities or "Burroughs"

     

    Also, take computers, most people can turn one on and use the programs on it at a basic level.

     

    Driving, most people can get in a car or small truck and drive it in normal to severe weather conditions and at normal speeds.  Compare this to a race car driver or a professional trucker who operate their vehicles much closer to the vehicle limits then a normal driver (find the Shaq vs. episode where he went head to head with Dale Ernhardt Jr on a small track).


  7. "I'm soldiering on with my one player. We actually ran a session this morning and had a great time. A very different dynamic one on one. I'm gonna keep the fire burning for a while, see if that don't come around.

    When I get a chance I'm gonna say a bit more about single player games."

     

    Watch this video, if you plan on keeping it a 1 on 1 game.  It has a lot of helpful hints.  Remember that in Star Wars characters are rarely alone for long after they are introduced:

     


  8. My group did not find it that tough, though they had already been through the beginner's module, the follow up, and the Prelmerian Haul before they did it.  Also, most of their sneaking around was done through maintinace passages as they group is non-human. 


  9. It also makes perfect sense.  Take Firefly as an example:

     

    Mal and Zoe are Solders who have, by necessity turned to smuggling

    Jayne is a Hired Gun who will do anything to get by (possibly even turning in River and Simon)

    Wash is a Pilot who would do anything to protect his wife

    Kaylee is an Tech who when push comes to shove WILL put her life on the line to save her ship or a crew member (though she would be far from effective)

     

    Leaving Book, Inara, Simon and River out of it as they are not technically the "Crew"

     

    However if the ship is caught with illicit goods on board by the Alliance, they would all be charged with smuggling as they would be at a minimum an accomplice,

I would just say no.  While it is true a directional explosive will only have the Explosive force sent out in MAJORITY of the selected direction, it is because the energy, like all energy will follow the path of least resistance.  However Newton's laws will still hold, namely his 3rd law "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

     

    So say there was a d25 explosive that he had elected to shape so that it was a 60 degree cone, there will be an equal amount of force generated back towards the point source.  While in most cases this is not worth worrying about (like the hardened steel plate on the back side of a Claymore mine), a droid is significantly more fragile then a simple steel block.  Also the droid will be pushed back as they are not anchored (like a claymore would be), this would likely cause the droid to fly back some and possibly clip the party anyhow. 


  11. I'm using the modular adventure "Dirty Work" from the Dangerous Covenants book, it specifically tells me to pay by the head, and gives a guide for the players to negotiate for more pay. I'm aware that I could have changed it, but being my third Star Wars adventure (and my first module), I didn't want to change a whole lot."

     

    So you know the situation and the logical change to fix it and you refused to use it.  This is rapidly becoming "A you problem" and not a "System Problem"


  12. As far as the NPC not counting the droid as part of the crew for the job, that is a fair attituide for an NPC to have.  I mean after all would you pay extra for a car or the group's ship?

     

    That being said, it was poor planning on the GM's part.  If I were running, I would have included the droid's share in the cuts for the other players.  So if I wanted to award the group 5k per player and there were 5 players, instead of saying that he would pay you 5k per biologic head and directly cut the droid player out, I would have either said the job pays 25k regardless if you have 1 PC or 1000000 OR that the job pays 6.25k each and state OOC that this assumes the droid's share divided up among the other 4 PCs. 


  13. Things to keep in mind:

     

    1) The object or person that the group is targeting.  This needs to be 100% crystal clear to them, mainly so they do not turn into a wandering mob of murder hobos.

     

    2) Where the object is located.  Again, this needs to be 100% clear to them so the can adequately plan for it.

     

    3) Do not let your presuppositions as a GM railroad the party.  Just because you have an idea as to how it should go, make allowances and be prepared to throw that plan out the window as soon as your PCs get rolling.  Remember the old military axiom, "A plan rarely survives first contact with the enemy."

     

    Of the 3 guidelines, the 3rd is the most important as it lets your Players come up with ideas that their PCs can do (or sometimes not do)

In my AOR game last night.  We were in the final encounter of the Prelemian Haul.  The Infiltrator droid Player maneuvered around the barricade and attacked the ship's captain (a Nemesis officer).  He suffered strain to activate his Frenzied attack so his base pool was 4Y and he spent a destiny point to get a G.  The opposition pool was 1P 1R and 1B.

     

    His roll came up all blanks on the Yellow and Green dice, a Despair on the red and 3 Threats on the other 2 dice.....

     

    So, he ended up lodging the vibro-axe into a console, which cause a electrical current to travel up into the axe shocking him and burning out the power motivator in the axe in the process (the Despair result)
