Infantry based wargames traditionally have more than just two factions, and why does a "Scum" faction have to be overpowered or prevent FFG from ALSO releasing Clone wars era armies? The Clone Wars cartoon has a few examples of "Scum" factions in it as well, such and Hondo's pirate band.
Also, FFG don't need to wait until they are "done" with Empire and Rebels, I'd like the initial factions to have enough units to provide each force org slot with options, but don't feel they need to exhaust everything before they start adding other factions to the game.

Q: How fast does stuff die?
A: As fast as you kill it. (Unless of course it is James T. Kirk, then expect at least a few minutes of overacting.)
But in all honesty if you are playing as rebels I wouldn't worry because these are Original Trilogy Stormtroopers after all.
You know that always got to me. Obi Wan Kenobi says at the beginning of A New Hope that "Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise." and for the next 6 hours of storytelling they couldn't hit Luke, Han, Chewbacca, Lando, or R2-D2. They did "graze" Leia and they blasted C-3PO in extremely close quarters. Can you imagine the party they must have thrown the guy who "grazed" Leia had the Empire actually won?

I painted this Rancor for Grant of the Vader's Finest podcast. I don't normally paint Imperial Assault miniatures but this one looked good and I enjoyed painting it.
FFG models are getting better and better. I may need to paint some of their Rune Wars minis.

I suppose that you do have a point, and I was likely a bit harsh.  The main point was a challenge to be the solution instead of just complaining, and possibly driving people away.  I do apologize for that which I have done wrong.

I will borrow a fantastic idea from another similar post, get someone at your LFGS to do your painting and pay him in product. Odds are you can find someone that is money poor and time rich. In doing this you are helping a fellow Legionnaire.

Han may hold the record for the Kessel run but my crew prefer to fly a little more casual. If we can, it's always fun to get a few games of Legion in while we are on, erm, 're-supply' runs. With this in mind second job of the refit after hoovering all the Wookie hair from the bunks was to get a gaming table installed in the Falcon!!

These different games can coexist guys and girls.  There are many people who play games from GW, FFG, Warlord, Mantic, etc...  and find things to enjoy about them all.  40k is king right now, has been for a good while, and will probably continue to be for the foreseeable future.  That doesn’t mean we can’t have a cool game and community out of Legion, regardless of how 40k is doing.

Reading this thread I really think FFG will have to introduce more than a 3rd faction. I was happy with the 2, but I am a FFG Star Wars player and not a 40k or war mini player. If FFG does get some of the 40K players to buy in, they will need to keep this segment happy or they will move on, much faster than the standard FFG customer.

Well GW announced the Necromunda new board tiles are 40 bucks. If you think the grass is greener over there...well I don't know what to say. 40 bucks for cheap card with print on it...holy ****. Plus if you're not playing a power armor faction, you can forget about getting any substantial model releases anytime soon. Necron codex coming up....1 new plastic HQ model...oh joy.

I hope Legion succeeds cause competition is good for the hobby, someone needs to be a threat to GW otherwise their prices will continue to get out of hand.

So I just need to vent and I know most of you won't agree, but I am taking the time to type this up in the hope someone from FFG sees this post and takes note of it.
I have been a huge fan of FFG products in the past with heavy investments into X-Wing, Armada, LCG, Destiny, and recently Imperial Assault. What originally drew me to Imperial Assault back in August was my play group's interest in 40K. I saw the potential to proxy a really cool Star Wars army using IA miniatures and was figuring out what that might cost when Legion was announced. I new at that moment it was a sign from on high that I must have this game and field Star Wars troopers against my friends' 40k armies. And so began the waiting...months roll by with the occasional pathetic 5 paragraph articles with 1-2 card "spoilers" and rehashing of rules already seen at GenCon...then more waiting...and just when there was the slightest sign of hope last week that warehouses were starting to see product, BAM! You've got two more months of waiting! Well at this point we have been waiting 5 MONTHS already for this game and my friends are all heavily into 40k, and I am sick of waiting for FFG to figure out how to run their PR and supply chain so today I pulled the trigger on a used 40k army.
And you know what? With the momentum that 40k has been gaining in my local community (not just my friend group) due in part to the recent rules overhaul, I just do not see how FFG will stand to compete with their current marketing and product strategy. Sure people will buy the Legion starter and try it out because it is Star Wars, and maybe the game will expand the genre to people that may not have played otherwise, but the core audience that spends real money (aka 40k players) are not going to jump ship on their investment for a pile of fleet troopers. How is FFG serious with that unit?!? I cannot think of a more pathetic rebel squad than the fleet troopers that got mowed down at the start of A New Hope. So now that we know the first expansion wave that will be released in what, August? if we are lucky? Do you know what is going to happen to that new group of players FFG creates who are going to get bored 1-2 months from release? They are going to meet a 40k guy at a tournament who will hear their frustration about the lack of content in Legion, and he is going to tell them all about this strikingly similar game called 40k and everyone is going to go buy GW product. Sure 40k has a 30+ year head start, but you don't start a fight with a 30 year old fan base by first letting everyone wait SEVEN MONTHS for the base game to show up.
If FFG seriously expects to keep the attention of miniature fans by doling out 2 sentences worth of spoilers week after week between months and months of waiting for product they are in for a rough ride.
I'll check in next year and see if this game has survived, best of luck!

Some people will probably disagree with this, but for miniatures i can't stand "generic" craft acrylics or the like. Miniatures brands are made for purpose, and flow and mix better in my experience so i always use them where possible.
As for which brand, most of the "market leaders" are fairly on par these days, so i buy whichever colour i need from GW, Vallejo, P3 or others. Generally speaking i love Vallejo and Scale75 paints in particular however. Can't go too wrong with any of the big names these days though really.
Brushes....starting out, don't spend too much. Until you learn to get the most of them and more importantly take care of them, expect to go through a few. Once you do use them a lot and get used to it, i will swear by Winsor and Newton against all comers, but a lot is down to personal preference here. You'll learn what feels "right" to you over time, don't worry about getting "the best" or anything. Semi-decent brushes can be found super cheap online.
Ralgon mentioned most of the other useful starter kit, but i'd add:
    - a handle, cork, piece of wood, old bottle...whatever. Blue-tac whatever you are painting to it and use it as a handle. It's enormously easier than holding a minis base to paint, and more stable. I learnt this after doing it the hard way for years.....
    - Decent lighting. Don't kill your eyes in poor light. It's not worth the pain.

And the ultimate tip that will immediately make you better than 95% of new painters: ALWAYS THIN THE PAINT. it should be about the consistency of milk, and 2 thin layers are astronomically better than 1 thick one. Get used to this early, and it'll improve your painting life forever

paintRack is an app available for Android devices that helps you track what paints you own, what paints you want, and what paints you used on that model you haven't touched in 6 weeks.
You can stand at the paint rack in your local store and scan the bar code to see if you already own a color!
It is an indispensable tool for me.
Not sure what the rules are for posting links to 'paid  apps' so I won't but you know how to find it.

This is when I think they will cross the threshold - when they expand their factions. I think Empire vs Rebels will attract many, however I think multiple different factions spread across the eras will turn the game into a much more interesting strategic game, and even better for tournaments. You have to think about A LOT more if you have multiple factions, and it will really impact the meta. Building a squad that can be one or two meta teams on an opposing faction, versus building a squad that can hold out against 1 or 2 meta teams from 5 or 6 factions is a big difference in terms of considerations.

I don't think you'll see many defections. People playing both, yes, but I don't see people moving over exclusively.
8th edition 40k has proven quite popular, which has revitalised the game a bit locally. Also, as others have said, games need critical mass before they get adopted and if Legion is too slow to get there it may well struggle to become popular. Time and money commitments are big issues for a lot of people and splitting either of those across multiple games can be a problem. I play 40k and X-Wing, for example, so adding another game to that list and dividing my time between 3 games rather than 2 isn't likely to happen. I'd also worry about the lack of factions in Legion. Just 2 factions seems a bit bland to me.

The best advice I can give you is find someone locally who paints - check out your FLGS, any GW stores, places that specialize in military modelling, local gaming conventions, etc...
You can learn a ton from watching painters on Youtube, and Twitch but there is no substitute for sitting next to someone who knows how to paint even a little and is willing to help out.
I know this is  a long shot but if you live anywhere near the Team Covenant retail store they have a core of solid painters who are very willing to teach, help, loan, and smile.
    Its a great place!

Good advice, in addition to the idea "that there is an app for that!" you may also consider:
A good old notebook, you can even dab a bit of paint down as to help colour match.
There are also a few electronic notebook applications that would also serve well. (Evernote or MS Notebook for example). You can also add photographs or video of the process.

I am certainly not one of those hobby elitists as you put it. I don't have the time or energy (or 3D printer) to put into this stuff. I will say when all prettied up, those games do look very cool and a lot of fun. Legion will be much the same way. This game will be amazing all prettied up and boring when played with gray models, stock barricades and a couple of books off to one side of the mat. It's the customization of these games that makes them great. If you aren't into that, this isn't the game for you. That has nothing to do with being a hobby elitists. You are going to want the custom terrain to fit the different missions available. You will need the different forms of cover to make the game interesting. If you are not into dressing this game up, then you really need to partner with someone who is because this game naked does not look interesting. If you are looking for a game that is all about the game play, then there are other star wars games that are better suited for that. Legion is a game that begs to be dressed up. X-Wing, Armada, even Imperial Assault don't need any dressing up.
Whatever you do, don't go bashing the "hobby elitists" when you play them because you will quickly not be invited to play with all the cool custom stuff built for this game by being disrespectful. There is a great deal of time, talent and craftsmanship that goes into the hobby side of things and if you aren't in the mindset to be respectful of that, then things aren't going to go well. It is a different culture than the pure gamers. If you are into first person shooter computer games, well these guys are similar to the modders that make custom maps. They may not be the best gamers, but nevertheless they enrich the games they work on and some of them truly make those game great. Prepare for a bit of a cultural shift from purely competitive games.

As for the game, well there may be a few details here and there not spoiled but they did show off the game pretty well at gencon. They showed unit composition, movement, combat with dice, start of round card effects, and start of game deployment and mission types. What was left out is probably specific to how to customize the game. So we do know what this game is exactly. I don't see FFG having mandatory painting needed for tournaments or extra points for not being an overly competitive ***.  I am sure most stores will follow FFG tournament rules as well. Even so, that doesn't mean Legion is not a miniatures hobby/game and will be devoid of all paint and custom terrain. This game will be at its best when fully embraced.
