You could use the "thread" from the Pern novels.  Thin silver filaments of space-born mychorrizoid spores that destroys organic material.  As it happens on Pern that this threadfall occurs only 50 sequential years out of 250, it would be very mysterious.  There might be legends, but figuring out what is causing the damage that looks like rain could be difficult at first.  Spaceships should be mostly immune to this, but passengers and locals would not be.  Even if they saw it in space and wondered what it was, they probably would not figure on how destructive it would be when it hit atmosphere and living things.  Try not to show any expression if they take a sample in outer space and bring it in to the ship...

Give him his father's ruined armor that is only as good as his family's battered name... absolutely useless.  He will have to spend his credits on some other form of armor to start with and will have to repair the Mandalorian Armor over time.  Eventually he will be able to get it back to functional, but will take time and credits and eventually he will be able to customize it for himself.  Don't let a Mechanics roll fix it, make it be a story element.  Let there be story hooks.  And yes, once the basic part is repaired, let it have stats of padded armor until it can be further modified.

If he doesn't like this story, have him provide a story for why he has non-functional armor and what he will have to do to get it back to its original condition.  This lets him have buy-in and ownership of something he really wants.

Personally, I hope we get a full mechanical aspect of how Mandalorian Armor works and how it grows with them over time.

I would buy from all of it... most definitely.  Handling them on a per-character basis is hard unless you have something that works for a character folio with pockets.  Or, just put the paper sheet in the Ultra-Pro Binder... though I need to get one with a zipper so I can put the dice in there as well.  It would be better with 12 on a page, but 9 does very well and would make having items, gear, etc easier to use as well.  For ranked talents it makes it way easier to keep track of... IMHO...

It would be possible that it could land beside one of the landing platforms like we saw on the forest moon of Endor.  They have an elevated platform.  It would just need a small lift truck or assembly to rest on once the repulsorlifts stabilized.  It wouldn't take much of a gantry (except underneath) to adapt to different kinds of shuttles for this.

That guy is really gonna hate having a rival sneak up and engage him in melee.  And that should totally happen, because it is the cinematic thing to do, right after he gets off the shot he has built this character to perform.  When he is knocked unconscious, drag him off as a hostage.  Unless for some weird reason the whole party is guarding him (very unsniper like), then he doesn't get to make the shot.  Something always happens to get in the way unless the others go free up the obstacle.  Cinematic.
But to be honest, that guy doesn't sound like a fun guy to have in a party because he isn't wanting to really help out the team... could be wrong, but if all he wants is sniper shots, he shouldn't get much playtime in most scenarios.... IMHO of course...

I m not bothered about games having apps. I can usually design some way to play solo or coop with out the digital age. One aspect of software is at some point it will stop being supported and get left behind. If your enjoyment is relying entirely on the support of a app it will have a life span. Where as I have games over 25 year's old that I can still play with equal enjoyment from the first day I started playing them. I don't buy games that require apps to play for this reason, but welcome apps that enhance game play as long as they are either free or have a reasonable price.

The dice mechanic, the speed and bonus mechanics. So much fun.

as it currently stands, it shares similarities to the way Imperial assault works, but a bit different, and what's great about this game is the turns are a lot faster paced compared to imperial assault

    for those that are curious

the Marines are Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta

each Marine has a turn dictated by the DM's deck i don't recall the exact size but i believe it was something like 6 or 7 demon turns to the 4 hero turns and are randomly shuffled into a deck and drawn one at a time and played out

so sometimes your hero can be the last to activate and lots of punishment can come your way.. this can be good and bad, but acting later allows better dictation on what to do because the demons are less likely to get out of the way of things such as frag grenades

each hero has one basic ability (sprint which reads discard one card from you hand and perform 6 movement points) one special ability unique to each marine and a command deck that is used for both offense and defense (will go into that shortly)

if i remember correctly (i played 2 games one as charlie one as alpha) this was how it currently stands
Alpha's special ability allows him to change one attack die to any facing when attacking a demon at range 2 or closer
Bravo's special ability allows him to ignore movement penalties when moving through enemy figures
Charlie's special ability allows him draw a glory kill card (will discuss that shortly) at the start of his activation if he did not have one already
Delta's special ability allows him to discard a card from his hand at the start of an ally's to give them 1 movement point (i cannot remember if you could stack this ability on one hero or not) and also has an increased hand size of 4 cards (up from 3 that each other marine has)

    each marine has 10 health
once a demon's health hits a certain threshold, which is usually anywhere from 1-3 hp from it's total health it becomes staggered.  any marine that enters a space containing a staggered demon will automatically perform a glory kill on it, killing it instantly and drawing a glory kill card from the glory kill card deck.  each glory kill card allows the marine to gain 2 health and gives them a special ability they can use, be it drawing more cards, gaining more movement, giving them defensive reaction abilities etc.  the list goes on

the demon player also has a demon deck that he can use to make his demons stronger, become more resistant to being staggered (requiring more hits to become staggered) or just plain hitting you much harder

the demon player also gets to continually spawn more demons from round to round, making it crucial for the marine players to make smart moves and to continue moving towards the objectives while still putting punishment on the demons to avoid becoming completely overwhelmed.

if a marine dies, it's no big deal, you just get to respawn a certain locations and keep pushing the objective.  In the scenario that was set up, these spawn locations were teleporters.  the objective of the Demon player was to gain 6 frags in this scenario (6 marine kills) to win.  it's not too easy for the demon player as you might think as there are plenty of things spread out on the map to aid the marines

just by walking over top of items, they can gain pick ups such as health packs to instantly gain 5 health off of their damage, picking up stronger weapons such as rocket launcher, gauss cannon, super shotgun etc to be able to add those cards into your deck

now for how damage and defense works,  during your active turn you will always draw up to your total hand size at the end of your activation (it may have also been the beginning of your activation as well but i can't recall)

there are 2 forms of actions, quick actions; where you can perform as many of these as you wish and a full action; where you only get 1 and once you do a full action you cannot take any more quick actions

Full actions are generally your strong actions and in most cases come in the form of using a high powered weapon that also grants you the ability to move X amount of spaces (not including any of the additional movement granted from quick actions) and you roll subsequent dice (red, black or a combination of both)

black dice are much stronger with higher potential damage, where red have a lower output and even a chance to miss with blank roll, so the more black dice you can muster, the better

once the damage has been rolled, defense is applied by pulling the top card off the top of your deck and put into your graveyard, damage is mitigated by the number of armor shields printed in the top right corner, which currently range from 0-3 and there is also one card called "reposition" which evades the attack altogether
there is also the armor card, which while it is in your hand, can be played as a reactionary card and can instantly nullify 2 damage on top of what is drawn from your defense bringing the potential damage mitigation of 5

this game was very cast paced and i look forward to the game coming out in the near future.  i'm not sure there are too many issues with how the game currently stands (i'd need more play with different scenarios to really determine how good this game is)  but as of right now my only complaint is that the set does not come with any Hell Knights in the base game and i truly believe there should be hell knights as they are quite a mainstay demon from the beginning stages of the video game all the way through to the end

i also hope they come out with more marine types with different weapons.  as it stands, alpha has a shotgun, bravo has a plasma rifle, charlie has a chainsaw and delta has a chaingun

all of the miniatures are beautifully sculpted and i look forward to painting these wonderful demons and Marines

thanks FFG, i really think you hit this one out of the park, especially if there is a great campaign to come with boss fights, which i assume there must be with a cyberdemon that comes in the box.  I look forward to seeing a spider demon and hell guards

    Hello friends,

I always wanted a gaming table and even more so when X-Wing came out. So I used an already existing table and added a slighly larger plate (92x92cm/3x3feet spacemat with a 5cm/2inches black frame frame) on top, but I was never really satisfied with it.

So with Armada on the shelf I decided I should give it another try: This time I build a whole new table with a measurement of 104x196cm/3'5''x6'5'' and LED-lit tabletop (plus some drawers to store all those starfighters and capital ships). It's nearly finished now and the only thing missing is the glassplate on top of the table.

    I hope you like it!

Mostly I like those tokens because they are useful.  I don't have to keep track of which ship can't shoot.  I don't have to look at the cards on the side to remember I have a lower agility on one.  Not saying it's for everyone, but I found it very useful and actually had me using the tokens when I wasn't using the cardboard ones.  And there are the basic ones for the more complicated crits.

    I don't completely agree.

I don't like it when people try to infer things. For example, we can't really cast judgement on if he is or isn't cheating. I also agree that sometimes people see any fragment of sloppy play or a forgetful moment and instantly assume ill intent.

On the other hand, without the internet folks getting all rabble roused about it, this may have stayed in the dark. It came to light and was presented to FFG OP staff to make a decision on the matter.

I also like having these discussions because I frequently am a TO and/or Judge and knowing about these situations is benefitial. Having prior time to think about them helps because I can decide what I would do in a situation like that if I saw it or it was brought to my attention.

The game board is 3' x 3', which works out to 22.86 in units of small bases.

If each player sets up their ships at the edge of range 1 of their edge, exactly perpendicular to the board edge, then the distance separating them before any maneuvers is 22.86 - 5 = 17.86.

Range 3 is 7.5 small bases, so the total combined distance travelled by both ships before getting in range must be 17.86 - 7.5 = 10.36. Therefore, a total movement of 11 between the two ships will result in firing range, whereas 10 will not. Colloquially this is referred to as the rule of 11, although the specifics change based on where exactly the ships are initially set up. In this case, the Shuttle is all the way on the back row (0.5 away from the edge of range 1), and it looks like the JumpMasters were set up a hair short of range 1. So the total travel distance required to get into range 3 in this case would be 10.36 + 0.5 + [delta], where [delta] is the distance the JumpMasters are backed off from the edge of range 1. We don't have the initial setup recorded, but taking a screenshot of the video and measuring distances I'm getting a [delta] of about 0.03 - 0.05 small base ships. It's possible that it's right on the edge of range 1, but I think it's slightly backed off by one or two mm.

    So:
To get to range 3 the minimum combined distance travelled is 10.86 + [delta].
To get to range 2 the minimum combined distance travelled is 13.36 + [delta].
To get to range 1 the minimum combined distance travelled is 15.86 + [delta].

    After round 2 maneuvers:
The shuttle has moved forward a total of 4 (0 stop, then forward 2). The front JumpMasters have moved forward a total of 12 (2x 4 forwards, which is 2*(4+2)) Therefore the total distance travelled, if the maneuvers had been executed properly, would have been 4 + 12 = 16. Depending on how far back the JumpMasters were initially placed from the range 1 edge (the [delta] number), and depending on how accurate the FFG mat is cut to a true 3' x 3', this might or might not have put the JumpMasters in range 1 of the shuttle. If the delta is only 0.03 as I estimated, then the minimum required distance travelled to get into R1 would be 15.89 for a full-sized mat. For a mat slightly smaller than 3' x 3' (as they usually are), then it would be slightly less. The total combined movement was 16, so for a 3' x 3' or smaller mat they absolutely should have been in range 1. As can be seen in the video, the player executes his front Jumpmaster maneuvers incorrectly by slightly sliding the 4 FWD template as he is moving the ship, so as a result the Jumpmasters and Shuttle end up just near the edge of range 1.

[edit]: They should have been in range 1 by about 0.1 small bases, which equals 0.4cm. The Scum player clearly did not execute his maneuver properly, and backed up his ships by roughly the same amount.

The Scum player could have dialed in a 3 FWD on turn 1 and still had room for the rear boat to clear, but by going 4 FWD (and executing it correctly) he will get a shot in round 1 if the shuttle goes 3 forward. In this case the travel distance would be 2+3 + 2+4 = 11 > 10.86 + [delta].

For round 2, it was noted that the Scum player could have gone less than 4 FWD with the front Jumpmasters. However, a 3 FWD is less likely to cause the Inquisitor to bump. The Scum player wanted his Jumpmasters as far forward as possible, without actually being in range 1 of the shuttle.

Absolutely!  And you don't even have to be a player on Vassal to learn from it.  With the Vassal league, you can sit in on games being played by the absolute best players in the game and watch what they do.  Not only that, you can download the vlog files and watch what happened.  On your own, you may not learn as much without some commentary, so there are times and seasons where you will catch games being broadcasted via twitch by some of the podcasts and have the commentary overlay.
However, if you are deeply committed to becoming a top notch player, there is no other place that you can find the top notch tier of players gathered in one place that you could play against.  You might not can pick your opponent on any given night, but with the different tournament circuits and Vassal League, you can definitely play against regional winners and worlds competitors for stronger competition.  It is a unique atmosphere.
